  • I was finally able to locate the problem with jumpy star trails on my CGX mount. Shout out to Ed at Hypertune for answering some questions for me and to Cloudynights.com user dmdouglas for motivating me to edit and release the vid.

Hi Dave. Great video, and I am full of praise for your persistence and commitment to the cause! I have a few questions: would you please produce a video showing the entire strip down of the mount so the rest of us with the same issue can follow your footsteps? Also, would you please provide a link to where you got the replacement bearings? I am in Australia and as you point out, it's not really practical for me to ship my mount back to Celestron. Once again, thanks so much for all your work on this and your willingness to share information with the broader astro community.

Matt Watson I got the bearings from the hyper tune shop with a guy named Ed at the helm, I think from Arizona but us based. He’s a really nice guy so I suggest just giving him a shout or email if you need.
I’m afraid I didn’t shoot much more video except what I could post here. I’ve got it stable now so I am worried about taking her apart again. Sorry! But I’m very sure if you are mechanically minded enough to take it on, you’ll have no problem.
There are just two Allen’s holding the block in place. Remove the plastic cover and peek up underneath and the two bolts are directly behind the worm gear. If it won’t come loose, the Allen up and behind the counterweight bar is what holds the block horizontally to the gear.
      Best of luck!

Hi Dave. Regretably, no I am not mechanically minded. That's why I was asking whether you'd possibly do some videos demonstrating how you took it apart. I understand you not wanting to take it apart again, now that you had it back together working well. It just would have been great to have included more of the actual strip-down process. Once again, many thanks

Hey Dave, Thanks for the video. I did a self tune of my DX prior to getting the CGX-L and noticed the over tightening of the retention collar during said tune. I am not seeing the really big spikes but a lot of little ones. How was the guiding? Would love to see a screen shot or video clip next time your out doing AP. My mount is out of warranty this May and I am wondering how I can get them to readjust the bearing without taking it all apart myself. We ought to start a group for the CGX/L community on Cloudy nights.

George Lutch there are quite a bunch of them on CN and they are not very happy with some of the quality control and customer service issues. But I’ve been on several threads that some way smarter guys have posted about how to get the most out of the mount.

That's a terrific idea about starting a CGX/L group. I'd be very interested in joining. My mount has the same problem is RA.

If your warranty is up in May, I suggest getting them to address it. Call them and tell them you are getting stars with trails. They will ask you to send in a log of your guiding and maybe an image or two. If you are currently having the issue, they will ask you to send it in and they will probably pay for shipping. I don’t know if they will address the nut too tight issue but they should give it the once over. If you don’t want to tear it down all the way, I would advise just taking the motor belt off and trying to move the cog of the axle with your fingers. Even if the scope is loaded, you should be able to turn the cog and move the worm. If it is super hard to spin you might casually ask them about the retaining nut before you send it in.

Hello, could you please indicate the specs of the bearings you replaced?

Awesome Dave, I have adjusted the springs but this is a good solution if that problem still shows up - would you recommend a lubricant spray first before a replacement? thanks!

Marty Spallone The star trails problem can come from a couple sources. In the case that adjusting the backlash and gear mesh doesn’t work and you think it is the bearing nut, it won’t really help to lubricate it. The pressure is coming from the side and pressing the inner sleeve of the bearing to the inside edge of the worm. I think the only way to help it is to let off the pressure from the nut.

Ed Foley seems to be out of the business now. He said he would put a kit together for me but that hasn't happened and he isn't responding to voicemail or email. Is there any chance that you have a record of the replacement bearings. Manufacturer and stock or part number might help me find them.

Actually I had a thought. The bearing looked just like a standard thing. Kind of reminded me of a kids fidget spinner. If you have calipers you might just measure the inside and outside diameters and the width and look in the web. I’m been surprised how many weird things I can find easy on Amazon.
