    Hey guys I bought this mount as well my problem was they had over tightened the motors and the result was that the motor shaft wore away
    The small brass bushings inside and ended up with big tracking issues . I have a lathe and all those kind of tools to make new ones which I’ve done but I thought I would just let you guys know this I do believe that you can replace the bushings inside with small bearings which I intend to do as this would give very smooth motion and probably a lifetime of use. Good video showing people what’s happening cheers .

    Thanks for providing us with a window into your CGX journey. Keep making great videos. Scott

    Newbie here. Looking for an upgrade to my manual tracking mount. Local telescope place recommended the CGX. I enjoy watching your videos for possible future problems I may encounter. The CGX mount is right at $2200 and I am hoping for that much money, my experience will be better than yours. I am using your videos as a guide to prep me for anticipated problems. Thanks for your walk through.

      I'm on my third mount but it has worked for me the rest of the summer. I anticipate that as the temps get colder I will need to adjust the meshing of the RA gears. But at least now I know what's going on. And yes the price is steep, but the competition mounts in this weight category are even more. I think it's a bargain as long as you sort out any issues while under warranty.

    I had the same problem with my new CGX mount, the worm grear was setting on the outside edge of the ring gear, on both the Dec. and R.A., drives, instead of being in the center of the ring gears. I readjusted both motor drives, to where they would turn free and easy, then set the belts to a very lite tension, And now my CGX works perfectly.

    having the same problem , i really thought it was my guide cam ,guide star would all of a sudden just jump 12 or so pixels , had a look today at the RA was no movement as in your video , freed it up a little 1mm tops , will see how it turns out ,

    Thank you for this vid.....I'm just about fed up and ready to take her apart.
    Brand new, I had an issue with the hand controller...giving me errors. They sent me a new one and that fixed that. But it soon developed that "Tick" as it tracked, of course ruining any attempt in imaging. There is also an intermittent soft "Grinding" noise while slewing. Does not happen all the time.
    This video(s) has enlightened me on what may be the issue and now that my public observation sessions are on hold (CV-19), now is the time to taker her apart.
    The CGX sure has it's problems.

    Hi Dave...
    I'm about to dive into my CGX mount...doing the same thing and making a grinding noise as well.
    This is a poor mount. My expectations were not met.
    Your vids have provided much needed guidance.
    Thank you.

      Monte Westlund I hope so to. There are others who have used it to produce fine photos.

    I made spring and backlash adjustments to RA,now the mount won't go to switch position,it slews untill it comes to the hard stop, any idea what could have caused this, think your videos are very helpful.

    Ah man that stinks. Yes, I also found the nut was tightened too far and I replaced the bearings. It got better but I have sold that mount and moved on. Just too many problems. But when it works it works well, so I hope yours last a long time! Good luck!

      Dave, I've own a C11 EdgeHD on a CGX-L and had the mount "repaired" under warranty. However, once I moved over to do astrophotography I still cannot get it to track as the stars bounce around. As you also have a CGX-L mount, what mount did you switch to?

      I literally got a loan and bought a MyT paramount. So far the payments are worth it :) I just got my pec recording done and pointing model and I can use my edge 1100 unguided for 120 seconds and I have round stars. If I guide the error graph stays under 0.5 pixels most of the time. I actually dialed the aggressiveness down to 0.5 and it doesn’t issue guiding commands very often. Really happy with it. For the C-14 I would recommend the MX+ because that’s too heavy for the MyT.

      @@davecompton8456 thank you for the very prompt reply!
      I'm still hoping to get my CGX-L working. But given the effort you went to "tweak" it, I certainly have my doubts. I've been thinking seriously about the MyT as well. It seems like a solution that works out of the box. (Note I have a C11 not a C14.) Do you have a mirror flop issue with the C11 EdgeHD? Thanks for your input.

      @@davecompton8456 One other item, what kind of bearings did you get from the hypetune company? (I expect any good bearing will work.) And, what kind of grease did you use to minimize stiction? Thanks.

      EXPERTS- I just talked to the hyper tube guy and he sent the bearings that would fit. I think but can’t swear that they are the same as the CGEM. If you search my channel there is a video where I replaced them and I can’t recall if I gave more info on which ones. They were ceramic hybrid I believe. When I replaced them I made sure not to over tighten the nut holding in the carrier.
      Regarding mirror flop, I have the clutches tightened down and the scope in rings versus on the dovetail. I’m getting initial pointing scatter of just 50 arcseconds (data from the tpoint model). With the tpoint supermodel with 200 plate solved points added. With that applied I have rms Pointing of just 12 arcseconds. Since getting that model I have been able to reuse it night to night and Pointing is always right on. I don’t think it’s flopping too bad. But just as a backup I also can plate solve and recenter but that has not been necessary.
      I have also used a large point model with the CPWI software and the CGX when it was working ok. I had rms pointing of 5 arcminutes by its calculation. It was close to center but required platesolve and recenter every time.

    Many years ago I purchased an LX 10 Meade Ems. From day one the ra never worked . You just hear the humming from the motor. The worm gear never turns. I know nothing about them . I wish I could get it to work without sending back to the manufacturer.

    I don't know what country you are in? But in Australia I would have taken a stuff up like this to our Consumer affairs dept we have to protect consumers and they are pretty straight shooters believe me I know! especially as these are not cheap! Their opinion is it either works or your money back from the retailer-I was considering buying this combo with the same mount as yours but I don't want a lemon that is going to give me more trouble than it's worth. Here a 2 year warranty is provided with Celestron Products and I would make them stand up to it-disgusting having to effect repairs yourself!

      Tony West I totally agree. Unfortunately here my options were limited. The main thing if I keep going round and round with them I loose telescope time for the students in my class.

    Which top set of screws do i adjust the left or right
    The 2 on the top not on the motor mount

    • @davecompton8456
      @davecompton8456  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      So there are two at the back of the motor carrying block that snug up the worm gear to the ring gear. One pulls it tighter toward the gear, the other is a stop limit. I would say those are ‘perpendicular’ to the gears pointing in. Then there are two that adjust the spring tension. One makes the spring right or loose and the other is a stop limit. If you loosen both stop limit screws, it is possible to tighten the block all the way in and bind up the motor. That could burn out the motor. Hope that helps.

    What a PIA! You shouldn’t have to dismantle your brand new eq mount to make it track. I think Celestron got ahead of itself trying to work in too many changes to their mounts, especially with the belt modification instead of their usual worm gears. It seems that Avalon have mastered the analog belt drive engineering at twice the price (and half the weight).

    • @davecompton8456
      @davecompton8456  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brian Schneider Yes, it did take some doing. Once it was working properly and I applied a pointing mode with maxpoint, I now have a very good mount. It points well and tracks well. I’ve found the key to be with balancing the mount East heavy if I am imagine at the zenith. That helped song with the tuning Celestron did when it went in for service. I guess I was hoping for that straight out of the box but let’s be honest, the price point is far below something like a paramount. If you work for it, it can be a good mount. Depends on your pain threshold.

      Agree. I saved up and got a MyT paramount and it has been very solid. Much better workmanship that of course you pay for. I sold my CGX and never felt bad about it, except maybe for the next user.
