    My problem with the Tauriel/Kili love story is that they only shared a few lines of dialogue together. There was not enough build up to make it a "tragic love story". When Kili died at the end of BOTFA and Tauriel was crying I felt nothing. They only had like 3 separate conversations in 2 movies. I'm not opposed to adding characters and new relationships but at least make it meaningful. Make the audience feel something.

      Actually, in the LotR (books) it is suggested that the One Ring gives the wearer the power to understand strange languages. When Sam puts on the ring he can understand what the Orcs are saying. "He heard them both clearly, and he understood what they said. Perhaps the Ring gave understanding of tongues, or simply understanding, especially of the servants of Sauron its maker, so that if he gave heed, he understood and translated the thought to himself."

I like when movies don't fully explain things but drop enough hints so observant viewers can figure it out.

    1. Radagast, Legolas and Tauriel don't appear in the book. In fact, Tauriel doesn't appear in any of the books and was invented solely for the movie.
    2. Legolas and Tauriel serve no purpose in the overall plot of the movie.
    3. Bilbo is main character in the book. In the movies, however, main characters are Gandalf and Thorin, while Bilbo has been reduced to mere secondary character.
    4. If Legolas and Tauriel serve any purpose, Radagast serves to absolutely no purpose in the plot of the movies.

      2.) Don't leave your evil plans lying around where anyone can find it, and don't talk out loud where anyone can eavesdrop.
      The same with good guys:
      1.) Don't wait and watch the bad guy get stronger or call for backup, do a roundhouse kick or whatever and KO the sucker.
      2.) If you've mildly beaten the bad guy and he/she attempts to run away, don't waste that opportunity to finish the job by going to offer a hand to your teammates so they can stand up, even though it would have only taken them 2 extra seconds to do i on their own.

    I think everyone is WAY to fricken critical of this. Yes, it isn't at all like the book in any way, but as a movie itself, it was pretty damn good. What is wrong with enjoying something that makes you happy and that you enjoy? Nothing, so let's all just take a chill pill because there's NOTHING we can do to change the movie and just enjoy it for what it is. It's a new spin off of an old story. Go read the book if you want the "perfect/genuine/real" version.

    • @brendan1871
      @brendan1871 10 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Because the movies and their developers pretend like they're movies directly out of the book by titling them The Hobbit, IF what you're saying is true about the movie adaptation being seperate from the original source material. Anger is also derived from the fact that many, including me, put their faith in Peter Jackson to 'film' the book. What did we have to worry though, pssh, I mean the guy brought the LotR series to the cinema in an amazing way. It pains people further that we, as the entire LotR and movie-going community, had ONE shot at making a successful adaptation and that this was the result. Also, it is more insulting when the director adds blatant filler (i.e. the unnecessary 20 minute or so battle with smaug at the end of this movies) or a tone or theme that wasn't a part of the original author's message (i.e. the dwelf romance, like wtf!?). I mean, what is the message to the inclusion of Tauriel and her and Fili's love subplot? Is it that love permeates all races or women can be warriors and equal to men or was it just to appeal to Hollywood's need to put love stories in EVERYTHING, even when it is not welcome nor needed. While I support the first two of my reasons in general (I don't like discrimination), Tolkien wasn't trying to teach people that and as for the third possible reason, I say fuck you Hollywood for saying that you would put a story on the big screen as accurately as possible (Mirkwood should technically be pitch-dark, but even I don't want to watch that)

    • @brendan1871
      @brendan1871 10 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Damn iPhones... -_-
      As I was saying:
      then not delivering on their self-proclaimed duty while still taking my money. I may be overreacting slightly, but it is the fact that Peter Jackson got away with so much disgrace to the original work and advertised it as nothing of that nature, that anger as well as criticism are justified.
      Let's apply this to The Last Airbender. Many fans, such as myself, are angry that such a monstrosity exists, but in that situation no one defends the movie.
      I think the anger occurs not just because a director fucks up the movie in the eyes of a good chunk of people, no, I think that it spawns from the fact that movies are scarce and it is not like you get a new Hobbit movie every five years. Or, it might be due to fans of the source material now having to deal with the 'fans' that have only watched the movies and therefore, due to the movie's inaccuracies, misrepresent the original author's/creator's vision and now misrepresent the community. I feel that this applies to any adapted movie and while some of what I have typed is based on principle, it also actively affects fandoms/authors and what they represent. Thank you for your time. These are just my interpretations of the issue at hand.

      It's all about immersion and consistency of story and characters. If logical errors exist within either, then it breaks immersion and breaks the very essence of the story itself. Then it just becomes a nonsensical spectacle that you wind up regretting the time you spent on it. I dunno, I like stories that make sense in how they play out and don't wholeheartedly depend on timely coincidences to save characters from trouble, or rely on inexplicable plot devices to propel the story forward. If the characters are never actually threatened because they keep being saved all the time by things that don't make sense, then how are we supposed to feel anything for them at all? Lord of the Rings made more sense than what The Hobbit has so far.

    • @kelbywatkins7544
      @kelbywatkins7544 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I can completely see where you're coming from. But for me, I love the characters and the story so much, that just seeing or reading about either makes me happy, and even if there are "errors" in either the story or the characters, it doesn't make me regret the time I spent reading a story or watching the films. Its a spin off of the old story. No book made into a movie is ever going to be the same because every single person has different experiences and thoughts and reactions and feelings about the story, so I guess that's why I said why not just enjoy being able to see your favorite characters on screen instead of nit-picking the errors in the film. You also have to remember in order to get the most from the story, they made it into three films but the book itself is very short and Tolkien doesn't go into very much detail about some parts of their journey so we don't really know exactly what happens so just allow the freedom that the movies have. But again, I can completely see where you're coming from and agree with you on some levels. :)

In the book during the Battle of Azanulbizar (or Moria) Azog was actually killed by Dain. Then in the Battle of the Five Armies Bolg, Azog's SON was the leader of the orcs and goblins :P
    Though he was killed by Beorn

  • @AWhimsicalStatue
    @AWhimsicalStatue 10 ปีที่แล้ว +222

    I understand the books don't matter in these videos, but yet again, the reason Bolg is, as you say, a "discount Azog" is because he's Azog's son. Plus, yes there is a forest in Middle-Earth without darkness upon is such as Lothlorien or the Old Forest. But I understand that from the perspective of an average movie-goer, they would believe the same as what you made a comment on.
    Oh, and Bard is NOT a discount Inigo Montoya. The Hobbit (1937), The Princess Bride (1973)...
    I'm not being negative towards the video at all, just pointing out some reason.

    • @ZantofDarkness
      @ZantofDarkness 10 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      I agree. First off I actually like what they did with Bolg in the movie. He feels different to Azog but you can see he is related. It just wasn't explained in the movie. Secondly I think Bard in the movie is more of a discount Will Turner from POTC. xD
      I liked this movie a lot but I wouldn't say loved like I did the first one or LOTR trilogy but I can see it growing on me. And also to be honest, even though I like the prequels (don't hate me), I don't think that Peter Jackson is turning into George Lucas. Lucas is a business man and always has been since the original trilogy and Peter Jackson is a film maker who in my opinion is one of the best. These movies are very difficult to balance. You have to please fans of the books as well as fans of the movies, plus make it still accessible for the general audience. Its a tough ask and I think no one could do it better than Jackson for the Hobbit.
      Although I will admit, even as a Middle Earth fan, these movies could have been 2 rather than 3, but I'm not complaining as its just more Middle Earth films that I will watch over and over again. I love them! :)

      D4haka97 Most of the orcs look alike because the are all from the same place in Middle Earth. In LOTR, the armies of Sauron are made up of several different types of orc and are very different in appearance. I think Bolg is a little hard to tell between the other orcs. But he is much larger like Azog and is pretty intimidating at times. I actually like what Azog looks like too. One of the most memorable villains in the series for me. Hes completely white, there are deep scars all over his body and hes like 7 foot tall. I can't wait to see him and Bolg in Battle of Five Armies. :)

    • @ZantofDarkness
      @ZantofDarkness 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      D4haka97 I said you can see they are related, but I didn't say that if you didn't know that then you could still tell. If I was just a regular movie goer then no I probably couldn't tell that they were related, but once you know, you can see the similarities.
      Also its your opinion, but I personally think that people use the term "suck" far too mcuh and exagerate it for something that actually was not bad. The Hobbit movies have flaws for sure, more than LOTR but I wouldn't say that they suck balls. Batman and Robin, now that is a movie that sucked balls. I honestly don't get the hate. Either people are far too cynical, or they just hate them cos they're new? I don't know. I like them a lot, and I respect your opinion, but one movie? Seriously that would have been far too rushed. Two movies makes far more sense. Movies and books are completely different in structure and in context. You can give so much more inforamtion into a book than you can in a movie. I'm pretty sure if it had been one movie, then it would have been a messy jumbled and far to condensed version of it. Peter Jackson is not a bad film maker. The only reason it was three movies was mainly cos WB wanted another billion bucks from a third film.
      I admit, both Hobbit films were padded out, but I'd rather have a much more rich and detailed movie thats longer than a shorter movie that is very quick. 2 films was the minimum to tell this story as it covers so much more in such a small amount of pages, and I think 3 is ok as long as its balanced right that I felt these movies did well for the audiance they had to cater for.

  • @bardofthe90s57

    I was genuinely upset after I read the book. The Hobbit could have easily been one film (MAYBE two if you want to include everything). But the movies include tons of stuff to cater to LotR fans instead of the actual plot of the story. I understand that people are saying, 'Just enjoy the movie' but there are points that are just downright ridiculous and obviously pandering to LotR crowds that you just KNOW Tolkien wouldn't have written. It just makes me really sad. :\

      Personally I could see three movies. But not the way they handled it. My initial thoughts was first move goes until the eagles which makes a good cutoff point*and I have basically no complaints with the first movie I felt they handled the filler stuff okay in it compared to the second*. Second movie goes till they arrive in laketown and meet Bard the archer not bard the smuggler. This would allow them to spend extra time covering what Gandalf was doing during his time away and the other events that happened during this time, explaining more about beorn*who they basically skipped over* and maybe even focusing more on the elves and the conflict between them and Thorin that will cause him to say 'no fuck you' later. Unfortunately they cut far more from the book then the first film to serve their need to shove in more filler specifically more Legolas and Taurial. My thought for the third movie was basically lake town till the end of the movie because I know for a fact they are going to spend a LONG time on the war at the end and they have plenty of space for action sequences that take considerable time.

    1) It's actually hard to sneak up on a highly trained Dwarf Prince Y'know?
    2) Flashback is necessary, it explains on how Gandalf met Thorin
    3) No, DUH. They have ideas like that, but sometimes they are to scared to do it. Gandalf encourage them
    4) Duh, this is a flashback
    5) That little bit ago, may be far. And the Eagles won't come every time. Gandalf only owes them a favor, and they are scared to be shot down by elves/ or lake men. So they wont get any closer
    6) That one I agree with.
    7) You really rely on power? And why would Gandalf Hurt Beorn, he will surely kill them then when he turns back to human..
    8) THey were in a hurry, duh
    9) So you want a whole explanation on Blog? And duh, of course they look like. They ARE ORCS who you can barely tell apart
    10) THat's your opinion... so it should not count. And Blog said yes.
    11) This movie is in the age far back, and Beorn is REALLY old. So he may speak in riddles.
    12) He meant that there is probably a curse laid on it by the evil ppl. Like the spiders...
    13) Listen to what he said afterwards... and maybe he is just a good host who is kind.
    14) Yea, got a problem? This a long time ago, bro, maybe they haven't used Km yet... I dunno..
    15) Bilbo did that to see how far they were from the lake, since they think they are lost. Continue watching...
    16) Um, he was holding it all the time, course he would.
    17) Yea, so they could keep an eye on them. And this aint normal spiders.
    18) Could be elves, everyone knows how dangerous those creatures are.. So it would take a lot of spiders to see it. And if you continue watching, not all of them went.
    19) UM, the spiders builds webs every where, and the dwarves land nicely because they aren't't as heavy as a giant spider.
    20) It has this control thing where it gives the bearer evil thoughts, and its just a ring that wont move.
    21) *Face palm*Elves can live really long, and considering he was in LOTR why not bring him in? It explains where he is from... so why NOT?!
    22) Yea, so what if it's gimly? Got a problem? We can finally see his FATHER
    .
    23) What? How is that a mistake? they found the blades in the cave.
    24) How the heck is a pick up line a mistake?
    25) How is that also a mistake?! And legolas takes intrests in her, keep on watching before you make a judgement.
    26) Do what? You don't understand it. So dont judge.
    27) Spying on the king? To see what he is up to?
    28) Always. Yea. Or maybe its just gates that are poorly guarded than the rest.
    29) Likely, maybe they are the reason the dwarves and elves participated in the LOTR meeting. Maybe they were the reason the hatred between the two kinds lowered a bit.
    30) It's called adding nice moments in between the action
    And you know what?! Be logical and watch a few scenes after or the whole movie before you judge it.

      I'm aware the bits with Gandalf, the white council and the Necromancer aren't made up by Jackson, they're even directly referenced in the book, but almost the entirety of Lake Town, the orcs attacking The Wood Elf stronghold and Laketown, Legolas,(though he is breifly mentioned in The Hobbit, though not by name), the barrel ride, Kili and the Elven chick, the encounter with Smaug and the section with Beorn are either completely made up, or very different to the book. The orcs such as Azog are also either made up, or chronologically displaced.

    Oh look. People hating on The Hobbit and it's follow-up. Reminds me of the prequels for Star Wars. It's almost like people have forgotten how to have fun. Movie makers and game developers have to pander to the every want and need of viewers and gamers or else risk hellfire being unleashed upon their product.
    What happened to the days where you could watch a movie or play a game and truly, honestly, enjoy taking a trip into the mind of someone else? Cynicism and criticism have their places but you should never let them ruin your sense of fun.
    I have seen more than my fair share of movies, both good and bad. And let me tell you, the Hobbit movies, just like the Star Wars prequels, were awesome to me. Because I remember the flaws in the originals without nostalgia glasses on, and I can enjoy said movies for what they are.

    While the Lord of the Rings are ultimately superior, the Hobbit did a few things right. Bilbo was a better protagonist than Frodo (who was as useful as a talking sack of potatoes), Smaug was fucking badass, and Tauriel was an interesting female protagonist, if bogged down by the unnecessary love story. Should have had her die saving Legolas or something, would have been more impactful.

      PEOPLE NEED TO GET OFF FRODO'S BACK. He was the Ringbearer. Sorry but that alone makes him the most important person in the story. The quest would have failed without him. He gets so much grief and it makes me so sad. He was a little hobbit who didn't owe the world anything and he offered up his life and had it absolutely destroyed and most of the world never even knew. The Ring wrecked him emotionally, mentally, and spiritually, and the quest left him with a physical scar that never fully healed. Yes, over time he gradually succumbed to the Ring's evil, but Elrond, Lord of Rivendell, commented on how he was extraordinarily resilient to it. Nobody could have done better than he did. He was so brave. And he lost everything. Nothing that happened was his fault. You don't have to like his character but a little bit more credit is due.

    The Hobbit movies were generally disappointing, but to start comparing Jackson to Lucas is overstating things. The Hobbit movies are still technically well made, well acted, there's use of real landscapes and miniatures, the make up and the CGI look great most of the time, the cinematography is fantastic... None of those things apply to the Star Wars prequels. Jackson knows how to make movies, Lucas just forgot after 1977.

    Don't forget, if Gandalf could briefly hold his own against Sauron, maybe he had enough power to kill Smaug. If that was the case he could have taken him out years ago, saving countless lives in the events following up to the Hobbit. Also, didn't kill Azog when he had the chance, may have saved Thorin's life. While we're there, he could have even slayed the Balrog much sooner and Moria would have provided a stronger advantage for them in the War of the Ring. Gandalf is a dick to Dwarves.

What? That's his weak spot? FIRE ARROW! Dragon dead), stealing the keys from the elves then smuggling the dwarfs in barrels, etc), he adds unnecessary action (not realistic in any shape and form (so you don't fear for the characters) that detracts from Bilbo's character.
    And Bilbo IS THE STORY! He's a whiny, privileged hobbit that goes against impossible odds and wins because of his wit. Not because of epic sword fighting, not the dwarfs (when Gandalf abandons them, the dwarfs cling to Bilbo and go to him for EVERYTHING ), just with his wits. And that is one of the reasons the Hobbit (why the book is awesome and why the movies (at the Peter Jackson ones (I love the animated one (watched it all the time as a kid) is so disappointing (more like infuriating (literally my family can't speak about them without growling or wincing (sometimes both). He made it into another epic fighting is how you win instead of wits (okay maybe some). Pure wits. And I think that's just sad. The hobbit showed that you didn't have to be a great fighter and tough. You didn't have to be super fast. It wasn't epic fighting that kept the dwarfs and Bilbo alive. It was wit. It was brains and trickery and playing on the enemies arrogance. THAT'S what made the Hobbit epic.

      Thank you, you made agreat point what this movie is lacking and/or doing wrong about with what made the story of the Hobbit so intriguing.
      When I think about it... most conflicts of the movie are solved without much force but with wit and caution. The trolls tricked into their own doom; the moria orcs/goblins - Gandalf assassinated their king and used the following chaos for their excape, Bilbo/Gollum - prime example; they won over Beorn be acting cautiously, Bilbo freed the dwarves by luring the spiders away and using his ring; almost similar to freeing them from the elves; and Bilbo went down to Smaug twice - both times only talking.

    One thing that got me is the elves being drunk thing. In lotr gimli and legolas have a drinking competition, where gimli passes out whilst legolas, having drunk the same amount, only feels a tingling in his fingers. These elves were passed out asleep on the table, how much had they drunk?!?!

      I imagine dwarves are used to smaller cups as were the hobbits. An actual pint is like an extra large to them. Would have been like me challanging Andre the giant to a drinking contest I can drink alot for my size but nowhere near as much as someone much larger than me.

    4:03- the elves may not necessarily be speaking English and in fact could be speaking elvish!
    At the beginning of the film with the spider scene, Bilbo is able to slip on the ring during the attack and can understand what the spiders were saying, if so, wouldn't it work in this situation too (if the elves were speaking elvish)!

Not to mention at the end where Thranduil tells Legolas to look for Strider it completely makes no sense. Gandalf is not suppose to know Bilbo has a ring of power until after he turns invisible in the original LOTR. I'm sure there is more between these three Hobbit movies that taint the originals but I cant remember

    Guys, stop recycling the eagle excuse. The Eagles are too proud to listen to humans at all most cases, but Gandalf is highly respected by all creatures. This is why they occasionally help him, but they don't take him far because they can't leave their nests unguarded by the warriors (the ones who are tough enough to fly into a freaking orc battle/exploding volcano) so they just fly them a little ways after helping them out. And they didn't use the eagles for the journey in LOTR because of the first reason (cant leave nests alone for long) and because the eye of Sauron would have seen them and sent the dragon riders after them. The Eagles were way to selfish to risk dying, even for Gandalf. However, it's still a legitimate complaint that this isnt described in the movie, since this is all in the books.

They include every single Hollywood cliche thats out there: A love story, a villain that prefers to talk a half minute before killing the hero and then dies himself, a villain that needs fucking 5 second to swing his weapon so that an other good guy can kill him, a rescue that appears in the very last second and safes the day, cheesy last words and so on and so on. Not to mention the Wilhelm-scream that has to appear in every-fucking-Peter Jackson movie. Its just a pain in the ass.

    • @LaCriaturaDelMar

      Even fantasy worlds require some inner logic. Not the kind of logic that would apply to the real world, but a logic one could understand and follow.
      Nobody here said something like "uh, dragons don't exist" but instead "okay, this dragon has a fire breath and is a really old intelligent being... why does he use that breath only when it's not convenient?"
      That.s inner logic: a dragon is a powerful and intelligent being, ergo he should be more capable than what the movie shows. And that's only one example of the many flaws in this movie's inner logic.

    I know a lot of people don’t know this and that’s fine, but a majority of the stuff that was added to this trilogy was from other Tolkien books. It’s not perfect and I also initially dismissed it as a cash grab, but a lot of things that were written by Tolkien to explain the events of the hobbit better (since it was his first book)
