    Gandalf's side quest actually did happen, but he doesn't really mention it in the book. I think he talks about it in the Lord of the Rings explaining that the Dark Lord Sauron had disguised and Titled himself as the "necromancer" until Gandalf and the white Council went to Dol Guldur and in the process of trying to kick him out they discover his identity.

      Yes Tolkien said in the books that his quest doesn't belong in the story cause it was all written rom Bilbo's point of view

    • @mysteriousewok
      @mysteriousewok 10 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      It does kind of mention it in the book. Towards the end while Bilbo and Gandalf are going back home, Gandalf mentions that the reason he left was to go meet with some other wizards to drive the necromancer out of Mirkwood.

    I love how, in LOTR, Jackson and his co-writer said they trimmed the films to focus on scenes that were important to Frodo's quest yet here they wrote a bunch of scenes that take constantly the plot away from the Dwarves' quest.

    Folks can say what they want, the Hobbit Trilogy was AMAZING. I LOVE that they turned one children's book into three movies by developing the sub plots and "side quests", rather than trying to jam all kinds of important shit into one movie, and having to leave a lot of beloved plot points out. Spreading it out over three movies meant that they could do it RIGHT. The pacing for the quest and the movie was perfect, an amazing homage to the book, and both entertaining and unpredictable to those who already knew the story for the fact that they did develop side plots and embellish minor characters. They were faithful to the book, and to the LotR movie trilogy, and it was brilliantly entertaining; no complaints at all!

      I personally find it very amusing to see that Peter Jackson is able to pull such an epic story spanning three movies that all last about three hours out of a relatively short children's book, while the Lord of the Rings trilogy mostly consisted of the fellowship walking from one short encounter to another. I would love to see the original trilogy receive the same treatment as the Hobbit. I mean, just think about it: If Peter Jackson can pull such an epic trilogy out of a relatively short children's book, how much epicness will he be able to pull out of three full-length Tolkien novels?
      It's a while since I read the books, so I have no idea if such a feat is even possible, but it would be so awesome to have the Lord of the Rings trilogy spanning nine long movies packed with epicness. It would also refute the trailer guy's point of Legolas looking older in the prequel trilogy.
      Also, while we're on it, would it be possible to make something of the Silmarillion? I haven't read them yet (though I have them right here and I intend to read them over christmas), but I just think that since they've already done the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit, and if they remake the Lord of the Rings into three trilogies, why stop there? I'm certainly not ready to leave Middle Earth just like that, and I bet there are loads of other Tolkien fans who think likewise.

    • @MrATN800
      @MrATN800 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Okay, so granted, the Hobbit is much shorter than Lotr, but it's also much more dense and action-packed, and let's add to that the fact that Jckson actually added the in-universe side-story of what Gandalf was actually doing by himself, which I, for one, welcomed gladly. The Hobbit is a story for a younger audience, I'll give you that, however, for a book "for kids", it actually has a rather complex story, embedded in a gigantic universe.
      As for the Silmarillion, first off, you should read it, of course, but it would be understandable if you stopped after a while. It's not an easy book to grasp, with a literary style that deters most people (fascinates the other). However, as much as I adore this book, it is... how should I put it: not to be adapted. Its structure renders it not ope to adaptation. It is not meant to become anything else than what it currently is. It's hard to me to put in words, you might as well see for yourself, but though I may like Jackson's work so far, I pray for him (any movie-maker, for that matter) to stay as far away as possible from the Silmarillion.

    Gandalf's sidequest was in the book, and was also mentioned at the council of Elrond in the Fellowship. Admitately it was just Jackson stretching about two sentences at the very end of the book into a whole subplot, but Radagast, Galadriel, Elrond, and Gandalf all fought the Necromancer at Dol Guldur both in the books and movies.

    I'm sick of people complaining about stuff not being in the books, but featured in the movies. Guys, they took quite a lot of material from other Tolkien works (some of them unfinished), such as The Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales of Númenor and Middle-earth and quite some more and combined them with the Hobbit to create a universal backstory to the LoTR trilogy. Do your damn research before you hate, dammit.

      There's a reason Tolkien never used all that backstory stuff in his main story. Interesting reading for hardcore fans but never belonged in the main narrative.
      And can anyone name any part of the film that was never in the books that was one of their favourite scenes? Usually I found the 'extra' things were corny and needless at best, sucked at worst. Cheesy attempts at action or comedy that did little more than detract from the main story.

    People who call these movies bloated, boring and overlong clearly have no appreciation for solid build up and character development. People who say they use way too much CGI are wrong because at least it's convincing CGI, and saying that it looks like a cartoon isn't even an argument, The Hobbit is more kid friendly in comparison to TLOTR of course it will be more cartoony so shut the fuck up. Yeah let's just ignore the fact that there was shit tons of cartoony stuff in the original trilogy and it was still awesome e.g. Legolas sliding down a shield not missing a shot, and sliding down the trunk of an elephant, walking talking trees, Gollum. This isn't new stuff guys!

    • @zak2153
      @zak2153 10 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      I agree with you for the most part but two things 1. the CGI wasn't really convincing, the orcs of the original trilogy looked far more better, at least in my opinion, and there were quite a few scenes filled with just god awful CGI such as the barrels going down the river and the liquified gold in the forges. Seriously those looked like the CGI you'd expect of some cheap sci-fi movie with no budget not a high budget film like this. 2. You see there's a difference between the "cartoony" stuff in the original trilogy and the stuff here, the stuff in the original trilogy was mostly non-comical save for the scenes with Gollum but even they generally fit the rest of what was going on in the film. Legolas sliding down the stairs on a shield was more to show that he was a badass In the hobbit you go from high action serious fight to Bombur rolling and bouncing down river landing on orcs then five minutes later you see an orc get beheaded and five minutes after that you have the dwarves crawling out of a toilet. With Legolas taking down the oliphant the action still fit what he generally did which was very quick, agile fighting involving precision rather than something like the chase scene with Beorn where Bombur starts out running everyone or when they're in Rivendell and Bofur throws a sausage to Bombur to break the seat he's in. While the original trilogy generally had continuity and the occasional scene intended to brighten the mood the Hobbit just goes back and forth, sometimes it's something that seems intended for young audiences and others make you think no child should ever see it and it doesn't make those transitions during times that make sense.

      what character developement? after all three movies all you get is a sappy lovestory that goes on waaay to long while there isn't even any bit of chemistry. they should have spent more time developing the eagles characters as they pretty much do everything in middle earth anyway. damn i really loved the LOTR trilogy, but this trilogy is just one BIG dissapointement. Although i do admit king Dain was awsome but he only apears at the end with little to nothing known about him.

      But the third movie is good! We can finally see deep inside the characters. I agree with DarkMasamuneXIII, I would like to see more of the eagles and king Dain. It hurts my feelings, but the trilogy isn't so good as it could be.

    yes, because having a story filled with superfluous characters with nothing to them, gandalf disapearing without explanation to do things that only get mentioned later and the bard only appearing when its time to kill smaug, with all of his backstory crammed to that bit or not there at all
    would have been soooo much better than having the movie actually expand on the events of the book, actually give the other dwarfs something to do, showing us what gandalf was doing instead of just telling us, and actually giving bard characterization and time of his own so that when he kills smaug instead of the dwarfs it actually feels justified and not something completely pulled out of someones ass.
    I am actually really glad this is a trilogy and that they expand on the book
    actually making connections between this and the lord of the rings as well
    because if it was just a one movie straight adaption of the book, lets face it, it would suck.
    a lot would have to be cut and things that are already shallow in the book would be even worst in it.

      Couldn't agree more - If Gandalf just vanished from the story and popped back up at the end like he does in the book then I'm fairly certain that would be one of the most prominent complaints people would be making! There's also the fact that Bilbo gets knocked out very early in the final battle and gets a summarised version after the fact - would people really prefer a faithful adaptation of that over actually getting to see an epic battle of five armies? Didn't think so...

    The problem with the Hobbit Trilogy is that everybody is comparing it to LOTR, and yes it isn't quite as good. However the book was aimed at children which meant they had to adapt the story to both fit LOTR audience and merge into the world we see in LOTR. This is why the storyline wasn't quite up to LOTR standards. When compared to many other major movies of this kind being released at the moment the Hobbit Trilogy is fantastic. In my opinion, I think it is a shame that they did LOTR before the Hobbit, done it this way would have fixed the minor issues with the hobbit films.

    • @pieoverlord
      @pieoverlord 9 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      +Jack Harris The problem with the Hobbit Trilogy is that Peter Jackson kept comparing it to LOTR. If he had just let it be its own thing - a whimsical adventure through a huge, mysterious world told through the eyes of a child-sized adult - it would have been fantastic... and two films shorter. If you're gonna literally put Sauron in it and spend half your runtime talking about LOTR, you don't get to complain when people compare it to LOTR.
      Go reread the Hobbit: it more than stands the test of time and there are legitimate reasons to strongly prefer it to the Lord of the Rings trilogy. IT'S storyline was fine, a worthy peer. The films' version was less fine.

    • @jw8395
      @jw8395 9 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      +Jack Harris I think the big problem here is that this film trilogy relies too much on nostalgia, referencing LOTR in the hopes that it will excite the audience when it really isn't necessary, padding out a series of films that really should have been two films at the most, and following the book wouldn't have been too hard. But nope, they gotta amp up the action in the hopes that we'll say "OMG!! That happened in LOTR! We just jizzed ourselves!!"

      Medical Shadow Uh, no. The gold was melted down when they started the furnaces. The statue is a mold that the dwarves had built back when they occupied the mountain. Once they started the furnaces the gold melted down into the mold and formed the statue. It didn't have time to cool and set properly so it disintegrated after a few moments and covered Smaug, but dragons are resistant to heat so it didn't kill him. And lastly, these movies are meant to tie into the original LOTR trilogy so that once complete you will be able to watch the 6-part box set as one, long story. That is why PJ is going to such lengths to connect the two trilogies...

    I still enjoyed all three movies. I think the acting was great, and although there were scenes that weren't needed, it was still enjoyable to me. If you watch the Hobbit movies as a separate trilogy they aren't that bad, and some of the added stuff comes from the appendices and Tolkien's notes. If they took away the Kili/Tauriel romance (and the character Tauriel entirely) I think it would improve some. Also, BOTFA wasn't quite as epic as I'd thought it would be, but I still loved it. I really wish Bilbo was a bigger character, though. Martin Freeman is a great actor, and he really exceeded my expectations for what Bilbo would be like, so it would've been cool to see more of Bilbo.

This trilogy is clearly not the movie of the children's book, it is the movie of everything Tolkien wrote, in multiple books, about what was going on. @Life on the Alaskan Frontier , I have read everything Tolkien published, about Middle Earth and otherwise. Apart from The Hobbit, LOTR, and Farmer Giles of Ham, I did not much care for any of the rest of it.....lots of information, but it did not feel like a story that was actually meant to be read....hard to get through. But one thing the process taught me, is unlike most other authors of fiction, Tolkien had a deep wealth of background information developed to support the characters and stories in his mire literate books. Which is why I have little respect for people who are overly harsh towards Jackson and company for incorporating things in the movies that they think are "not in the book".

      As someone who loves LOTR (both book and series) and loved the Hobbit book as a kid I was severely heartbroken at what resulted from Peter Jackson's rendition of the book. LOTR as a movie series was dense in material and was amazingly executed. The care that went into every detail was spectacular, just the detail they dedicated to the Uruk-hai armor alone is just amazing. The acting was great, the scenery was absolutely breath taking, soundtrack incredible, and the action scenes were believable and captivating.
      I find the Hobbit movies enjoyable only for the simple reason that I find nostalgic moments with this trilogy. The Hobbit book is shorter than any of the LOTR books and yet it was unnecessarily stretched out over three movies. The first movie was horrendous in execution, I found the first half of the movie completely boring. Bilbo didn't even take off for the journey until a good chunk of the movie had passed. This is a story that's supposed to be centered around Bilbo and yet they continuously involve the other dwarves in what should have been important character building moments for Bilbo. I did enjoy the riddle game since it was one of my favorite parts of the book.
      As for the Desolation of Smaug, they definitely spent too much time trying to develop the new elf characters that it took away what should have been great moments for the movie like their moments in the forest. While this movie was a huge improvement over the first it still used way too much CGI that it made the action sequences more silly looking than believable. The characters aren't nearly as well developed as the ones in the trilogy, but that is definitely not for lack of trying. I could go on but I think I ranted enough for one day.

    • @keystrix3704

      KTMICD2 I never said LOTR was bad. Also, such a hatefully passionate thing to say for someone who "doesn't care".
      HeyItsTnzk I just enjoy a movie series that is far more character driven than before. Apparently that's a crime here.
      Batman of Dorne Hey, someone reasonable. Neat.
      Look, to me, the LOTR movies were simply for those who have read all the books. I never did, so I missed out on tons of things the movies left out, like why I should care about the majority of the characters. The movies glossed over them and acted like I was supposed to be amazed that these characters that I only knew two sentences about from different races that I've hardly got any time to feel the hostility between... all formed a fellowship after a single roundtable argument. After that, the majority of these characters just went along with the whole thing like it was nothing, often just sharing simple (sometimes hilarious) quips between one another. The only character that had a good amount of background covered in the movie, had an interesting clash of interest with the fellowship, and had a rather big character revelation... is killed off in the first movie.
      The Hobbit (without going on a huge rant here myself), to me, takes more of its time in showing a good chunk of its characters, developing relationships, history, and racial tension. All of it pretty much explodes and comes together rather nicely in the final movie, actually getting me to feel for quite a number of characters as they experience gain and loss. But don't get me wrong. As much as I did really enjoy all of that coupled with the over-the-top action sequences, there were some minor things that did annoy me, like the dwarf leader revealed in the end who was almost all CGI.
      So, basically what I'm saying here, as a person who never read the books, The Hobbit got me to actually care about the characters while TLOR (which it clearly had a touch more care put into its development) didn't. Hence, the OP.
      Sacrilege83 Seriously, who are you? I really don't remember.

    Haven't yet seen BOTFA yet, but I don't understand why many people seem to dislike the Hobbit trilogy (I've even seen a comparison to the Star Wars prequels!)
    Ok, so they're not quite the epic that LOTR was, but that's because they are adapted from a CHILDREN'S book. These films aren't bloated and dull. They have made changes to what's in the book and added nes stories and characters. I fail to see this as a bad thing + it means we get more films.
    Think of it like Game of Thrones (haha) or The Walking Dead. Both are adaptions of the source material, but have made some tweaks and changes for improvement when viewing for film or television.

    the whole golden statue thing was so strange. How did the dwarves even come up with that plan in the first place. "Lets build a golden statue, and then the statue will melt and then liquid gold will fall onto the dragon." Really makes no sense. Things melt into a puddle, not explosively. The dragon could easily avoid it. And how did the dragon shake off the gold after it covered him. Just bizarre physics in middle earth apparently. And really stupid.

    • @ActuatedGear
      @ActuatedGear 10 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The idea was to encase it in gold. Kill it with heat or else just drown it. Being a dragon it was immune to the heat and the gold did not solidify instantly of course so the dragon shattered the thin shell causing the molten core to mix with the shell remelting it.

    • @GerNiels
      @GerNiels 10 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      ***** Yes it's a children's book, but the movies clearly weren't aimed at the same age group the book was. It was trying to copy the success of LOTR and it failed because the source material just didn't fit that mold.

    • @metgredko
      @metgredko 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Too cartoony and there is a disconnect with the audience. From the actual combat to the physics the characters are never actually in danger. Any tension the scenes would have had is resolved through the toony physics or these characters who themselves state they're not soldiers in the first film fighting like experts.

    • @GerNiels
      @GerNiels 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ***** This movie is not for children. It has only just as much comic relief as the LOTR movies did with Merry and Pippin. And at the end of the third movie it's all about the impending doom of losing to the orcs. How is that not 'gritty'? Humans getting killed all over the place and whatnot. The Hobbit book is just not fit to make into this big epic saga like LOTR. That just not what it is, but that is exactly what they tried to make of it.

    • @metgredko
      @metgredko 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fitting the book should be the least of their concerns. This is supposed to be a story about a trek with a great danger at the end. There is no danger, no risk involved. The lack of physics and every possible coincidence working in their favor to eliminate bad guys and not even remotely harm the good guys kills these movies. There is no tension as a result and without it no attachment. I have no reason to care about what is happening as in the end it's blatantly obvious to anyone seeing or hearing of the Hobbit for the first time. The movie is shit because they went into road runner and coyote territory. This movie fails at entertaining precisely because they do everything they can to resolve the tension in the very same scenes there should be some. Without it there is zero reason to have scenes with conflict. There is no pay off to any tension which may have been building prior to the conflict. This movie was bad and they should feel bad for making it.

    The problem with the Hobbit movies is that all the events could have easily fit in a single movie. Just cut all the stuff that doesn't happen in the books (or at least Tauriel and most of the Laketown politics) and you get a perfect movie.

    • @zak2153
      @zak2153 10 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Not necessarily, then you have Gandalf randomly disappear and reappear for no reason several times with no explanation as to how or why some thing happened and you wouldn't really have any action until the Goblin tunnels and then very little action beyond Bilbo killing a few spiders until they get to Smaug and the battle of the five armies. Then take into account that the Hobbit isn't the sole source of their story, Gandalf's side quest was written in I believe the Simarillion although it might have been the appendices of The Return of the King, and there's no way to make something that could in anyway resemble a perfect movie with less than two films which is what Peter Jackson had originally intended.

      Brandon Hank Having thre main action sequences and one smaller one in betwen the first two, with the last two being almost followed by each other and making a crescendo sounds like a very logical and perfectly fitting intensity curve for a two hour movie. Having just a brief mention of why Gandalf constatly keeps dissappearing woulnd't be much of a deal either, as it fits with the character and the way Bilbo sees him (misterious and sometimes even suspicious but all in all helpfull and a good friend).
      Making constant references to "the rise of Sauron" doesn't help the movie at all. Constantly foreshadowing LotR is just aiming to use a kinf of nostalgic feeling towards the movies remembered as the good ones, which proves an important lack of confident in what originally was a standalone book.

      I agree, I have no clue why it draws so much hate. It's no LOTR but it would be stupid to expect every new movie to be better than everything else already out there.
      Though perhaps it helps I didn't actually read the Hobbit (but did read the LOTR books so I got more of the context of the flashbacks and the seemingly random Sauron foreshadowing bits?)
      The only part that really annoyed me was Legolas' presence, which was very forced every minute of it (I was told it wasn't in the book so must have been done as fanservice?)

Though they did invest a lot of time and effort in it, from what I heard about the insane details (like making every single piece of chainmail in the movies by hand).
      And yes, that romance seemed very fake as well. The only parts of the movies I skipped around, in fact. Blah, blah blah.

    Ever notice how "Honest Trailers", "How It Should Have Ended", and "Pitch Meetings" have videos that are only 5 minutes long while "Cinema Sins" have videos that are like 15 minutes long? Ever notice how they're all better than "Cinema Sins"?
    Don't tell me that's a coincidence.

    I respect your opinions and I love honest trailers but this one isn't funny or even good for that matter. Honest trailers are great because it is made up of funny and witty jokes using subtlety, this felt like I was watching a critic review with no jokes or character. It was 90% complaining about things that are in the movie but not in the book, Which they are fucking separate your not youtube commenters. And 100% the screen junkies guys ranting about how you didn't like the movie and the Honest trailer voice saying it on recording.

    • @ActuatedGear
      @ActuatedGear 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I just kept smugly telling the video "Fuck you." because it doesnt get why everything about every one of these movies is awesome. And that is reason enough for me to have watched this honest trailer. Purely to know the Desolation of Smug.

      actuatedgear No I don't want to say Fuck you, and I didn't come here just to rip on the honest trailer. I like honest trailers because it delivers jokes everyone can laugh at, even those who loved the movie. But this had no jokes it was no better than a review you read on Rotten Tomatoes, so I was giving my criticism on their video which I believe could be to some benefit to everyone

      Shai Yastrab In the book they consider handing over the ring to him during the Council of Elrond, but then they discard the idea because Sauron’s march over Middle Earth was inevitable, and Bombadil would have ended up being cornered by the dark lord.

    • @setsunaes
      @setsunaes 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@calick7208 I'm pretty sure that they discard the idea of giving it to Tom Bombadil not because Sauron was going in his forest and take from him just like that, but because Tom was WAY TOO immune to the ring so he was going to just forget about it and lost it somewhere, or the ring (having a mind on his own) could just lip away from Tom's finger. Then someone could just find it and take it out of Old Forest and THEN Sauron could find it.

    A few faults...
    1.The Arkenstone doesn't corrupt ones mind, it was the gold that was cursed not the stone. But it did indeed give the king a lot of authority.
    2. The original trilogy that you spoke so highly of had "flashbacks", for example Gandalf fighting the Balrog.
    3. Trilogy's normally end with cliffhangers to make the viewer more excited for the next installment. If you weren't aware of this your movie reviewing must be horrible.
    As for adding extra content to the movies, well that was a hit or miss I guess. Some people love the fact legolas is in the movie and some people finger themselves over the books. I personally thought the trilogy was excellent, for those that are complaining it wasn't like the lord of the rings, it never was going to be. The Hobbit and The lord of the rings are two completely different scenarios within the realm of middle earth.

    • @poslednisoud
      @poslednisoud 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      It wasn't Arkenstone nor the gold, dwarven greed was caused by their rings. Men were completely corrupted because that's how we roll, dwarves resisted Saurons control because they are more durable yet they were infected by greed that caused fall of Erebor and Moria ("The dwarves delved too greedily and too deep"), elven ring unlike the others were forged without Saurons supervision so his corruption wasn't present and they used them to preserve their lands. Still they were dangerous to use for they were still bound to the One at some degree.

      Except the flashbacks were necessary in LOTR. We needed to see how Gandalf defeated Balrog. In this one they are completely useless. Yes we know Gandolf meet with Thorin, yes we know the town was destroyed since we saw that in a flashback in the last movie. We don't need to see these events.

      That was one of the best scenes... But I guess it was the actors that made the scene rather than the script. And tazzerdevil98, it may not take 60 years to find someone - but in the Lord of the Rings, they're already really good friends so I guess they spent many years building up a great friendship. (Like you can see in the Two Towers when you see how Legolas is worried when Aragorn comes back to helm's deep when they thought he'd died...).

    From Chapter 19: 'Then the elves of the valley came out and greeted them and led them across the water to the house of Elrond. There a warm welcome was made them, and there were many eager ears that evening to hear the tale of their adventures. Gandalf it was who spoke, for Bilbo was fallen quiet and drowsy. Most of the tale he knew, for he had been in it, and had himself told much of it to the wizard on their homeward way or in the house of Beorn; but every now and again he would open one eye, and listen, when a part of the story which he did not yet know came in. It was in this way that he learned where Gandalf had been to; for he overheard the words of the wizard to Elrond. It appeared that Gandalf had been to a great council of the white wizards, masters of lore and good magic; and that they had at last driven the Necromancer from his dark hold in the south of Mirkwood.'

    This piece of shit goes down in the same category as 4th Indiana Jones movie and 4th Pirates of The Caribbean. One thing that is common with all of these 3 movies? They shouldnt have been made in the first place! (Remember that Jackson's original plan was to create 2 movies, NOT a freaking trilogy!)

      Glad that there are atleast some ppl who agree =) And I mean I have to say that I really liked Unexpected Journey! But even it would have benefitted from 2 part-deal, where things propably would have run more smoothly, since many felt that it was too stretched also.
      But ye I think two 2,5 hour movies would have been more than enough to tell the story of the Hobbit and even add in Gandalf's adventures on Dol Guldur, which ofcourse happened at different time than in the book.
      However there would have not been the need for Tauriel, or her embarrassing love-relationship with Kili, nor idiotic cliffhanger ending that we saw in DoS.
      Really a shame that ticket income is all that mattered for WarnerBros and Peter Jackson, though I think that with Jackson it was also something that its called "director's blindness"....he added in his own ideas thinking that they would make the story better and focused too much on technology, just like George Lucas did with Star Wars prequels.

      Isn't the original quote "IT'S OVER 9000!" The one is unnecessary as it is what makes the total over 9000. Or was the "1" supposed to be another exclamation point? In which case the total would only be 900. You might wish to edit this as soon as possible.
