So here's something I forgot to talk about in the video: filling the fuel filter with seafoam. Seafoam is a cleaner and lubricant as well as a fuel of sorts, so by filling the fuel filter with seafoam instead of diesel, you displace the air to make priming and starting the truck easier after the filter change, but also it will give a little cleaning action directly into the injectors and injection pump. Additionally, they advertise that Seafoam will act as an anti-gel as well which is helpful in the winter months. All this is info they put on the can, but I had a few questions about it, so I figured I'd explain my thoughts.
When I was a tech and we had a same similar issue on GM cars. Like the Monte Carlo chassis I think 2000 and up. There was a bulletin of inadequate grease in the intermediate shift causing wear and slop. As I owned one the fix was to just re grease the shaft. But that was a pain. So on MY car I disassembled the shift and cut a tiny groove in the male male splines and drilled a corresponding hole in the outer shafr and tapped for a Needle grease zerk. And it became part of my maintenance routine.
Excellent work, not surprised the dealer could not figure it out. Even the dealer is not gonna be as motivated to figure something like this out. the only thing is I would’ve stuck with the OEM fuel filter system. To each their own and you did a very good job.
@2:21 I take issue with this because this is not a "WET" system the oil filter goes into bypass at a certain PSI so it filters nothing after that point untill you get below that PSI threshold. You can get the same coverage by just maintaining regular service intervols on your truck.
I also experienced the intermediate steering shaft issues in multiple years of GM trucks. replaced upper as well as lower shafts with upgraded shafts and each repair seemed to get better but not until I spoke with a Dealer Mechanic and was given a tech sheet that advised fill the boot with grease at firewall, Pack it full as possible. only the was the problem solved. I have the same problem on my 2020 3500 HD Denali. Time to investigate problem. Great Information here Thank You.
I work for a dealer and I’ve replaced a handful of these shafts already. Also there’s a priming sequence for the fuel system and I like diesel hotshots secret for duramax engines put it in the fuel tank and just prime the pump. No need to use sea foam.
That steering shaft 'clunk' has been an issue with the GMC & Chevy full size pickup for over 20 years. during the first ten years GM said to grease the spline shaft, then they said to 'pack the slip joint in grease'. The one on my '06 was replaced 4 times under warranty and they finally got it right. Got lucky with my '14 and '19 models but heard from enough buddies to realize the issue was still around. Drove a new '22 at a dealer and the clunk was back. Just a pain in the butt and GM will not issue a recall as it is not a safety issue. Hell, it took them 6 years to admit there was a problem.
I would have some serious concerns with using a 5micron filter on the main engine filter from a flow standpoint. There’s a reason the factory doesn’t use a 5micron. The finer the media, the higher the pressure drop across the media at any given flow rate with a rising curve. My guess is that filter may be in bypass a lot of the time. To run that fine a filtration rate, one needs to be running a kidney loop system.
That filter should be lower pressure so it should be fine. The biggest part is maintaining flow. As long as their is enough media/surface area of filtration flow should be good as well. The high pressure system on that truck will toss a code if it starts to struggle to get fuel from the lower pressure side so itll warn you before issues.
I’ve been using magnets on outside of oil filter and oil pan for years. Never thought someone would build a oil filter with a magnet inside. Maybe if I was a little smarter I could’ve done that. 😂
I put ceramic magnets in my oil filter, down into the body. Then I pull them out clean and put into the new filter during an oil change. This way the filter grabs the large particles and the smaller magnetic that make it through get stuck on the magnet.
My man, how's the new steering shaft working? Any clunking after a year? I see some people don't like your fuel filter, well Donaldson is a great filter, way better than a stock A/C Delco. The thing to remember is the better the filters are, the least likely to have engine issues. Cheap filters will let more particles, Have you ever seen what a fuel pump does when to much crap plugs into it, engine destroyed. For you Diesel guys out there, you can save money with blue def if you top off at a truck stop or a place that has def next to the diesel pump. but also keep a couple spare jugs in your garage.
Holly crap my 2021 High country Duramax is doing the same thing as soon as I put a lift kit on and wider tires on it started chattering drives me crazy !!!! Yes thank you !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Aren’t you supposed to keep the truck off when filling up with DEF? One of our gmc trucks was running while we filled up and it caused a bunch of issues. Ended up replacing def sensors and a few other things.
Re filter specs (micron, etc).... The micron rating is really only half the spec. The other critical piece is the efficiency at that particle size. Even a screen door is a 5 micron filter; it's just not very efficient at it. Also, while "bigger is better" is usually the case with particle capacity, you also have to take into account pleat dimensions, pleat count, and material. Synthetic materials can hold more than cellulose, so a smaller synthetic filter could possibly hold more than a larger paper one. Not saying these weren't good upgrades. Just something for folks to be aware of when they're comparing filters.
My steering is doing the same thing. It is worse at slow speeds and you can actuallyfeel it in the steering wheel.. I have it at the dealer right now. It has done it since it had 10 miles on it and now has 27k miles on it.
It's funny because I had a 02 silverado 1/2 ton that maid that same stearing noise. It almost sounded like a ball bouncing. Are that filter replacement that you did is there any electrical plugs or is it all plumbing
I had dealer replace my steering shaft with the new style too after hearing noises from my steering and the noise came back after a few days of driving…
Any fuel related issues & you taking into the dealership under warranty, the tech could call out that after market kit being an issue because let’s be honest the tech gets paid a very reduced wage to diag & repair the vehicle already
These 17+ diesels are a whole new ballgame compared to the older stuff. I love my L5P I flog on mine super hard and it just keeps on trucking. Since covid, we have 15k miles on a 32' toy hauler (10k lbs), a pontoon boat (6-7k), and the car hauler with jeep or RZR (7k). We did the teton pass (8%?) with the toy hauler and could keep up with passenger cars and the exhaust brake held. Just need fuel prices to get back to where they were a year ago...
Lt it's north Maine Steve I own a 08 duramax lmm I noticed u stepped up filter quality good idea I noticed u using Mobil delvac I wanted to tell u about the oil I use it's brand name Can-pe-co in a yellow jug .they have para synthetic , heavy duty conventional what I use every 5 ,000 mi. Also they have full synthetic. Diesel fuel systems of Maine swears by this oil after tearing g high mileage diesel engines apart and having minimal wear noticed . Also this cen pe co oil has the additives in it that commercial oils no longer put in due to environmental reasons or whatever. I guess the anti wear additives is what puts this oil in a different league I have 235,000 miles and my duramax and this oil keeps her sounding great
they have been saying this one is the fix for the last 3 revisions. just got mine done and have a Fleece fuel filter ill put on next week. also have a Amsoil Bypass oil filter system going on.
That 5 micron filter is the engine oil filter. The fuel filters do not bypass, if they get plugged, you walk .I cannot imagine unfiltered fuel reaching the high pressure system.
on the sea foam. that can is meant to be deluded with 25 gal of fuel. that gives it time to clean. running it all through that quick probably didnt clean much.
It sucks that GM hasn't fixed this after all of the years. But I have heard so many other stories about other brands that seem worse to me, but perspective is different for everyone. Some swear by one brand for reliability and admit that the fuel economy is bad.
If you call the gm regional office fir your dealer and show them video they will refund your expenses and might do more for your trouble. Friend is service Mgr at local dealer and told me to tell you to do that. His store would have made it right from beginning. You have the documentation to back up from 100 miles. They have to prove your part caused issue. Fleece can provide proof of improvement.
How do you like the bank’s system? Any fuel mileage increases? I have the black market performance fuel adapter to a cat filter but haven’t installed it yet. Looks like it will be a pain to do plus I have big mits. Lol
Seems like GM hasn’t fixed this issue at all. Out of three of my GM trucks they’ve all had noisy steering column/ISS. Replaced the lower column bearings and it wouldn’t last. The hose clamp mod sounded really strange and not sure how it would work but it worked, surprisingly. Lasted years until I sold the truck.
It seems everyone is having issues with dealers no matter the brand. I bought a brand new platinum f-150 and it was having transmission issues. Dealer didn't know what was wrong after I told them that the 5 to 3rd downshift grinded like heck. They came back and told me ford knows there is an issue with the oil feed on the clutch pack but will do nothing about it unless the customer complains enough...they didn't want to issue a trans recall for 5 million trucks😑. Needless to say my trans was rebuilt 3 times before 30k miles with a restraining order due to me raising my voice at the service manager. (Autonation ford bradenton)
I have a 2019 gmc duramax ,I've had it into the dealer a few times with a similar nose, still there ,about 25000 miles on it now . I wonder if it shares the same shaft?
I have the same clunk in the steering wheel on my 21 Silverado 2500hd Duramax, it was built Feb of 21. I'm going to see now if my dealer can do it under warranty
I'm thinking about getting a PPE oil and trans filter for my LB7 Duramax. The magnet is cool. Everything from the OEMs is usually made to bare minimum spec.
It’s a reasonable estimate that you will need to change that filter 5x more often. Would I do that? No, but 2x more often is not a far departure from reality with a lower micron filter. Now, if you ran a 2 filter system you could be in a better situation. Just smacking on a slightly larger lower micron filter will not keep the same oil change interval.
Two things. Never fill a fuel filter down the centre. Fill the small holes around the centre and be careful that everything is clean before you even open the box. Unless it filters from centre out which is very rare. Two. You could probably have fixed the rattle in five minutes with some tape a syringe and some thread locker. Get some mid to low strength locker and inject it into the gap around the shaft in a few places, tape up any holes and around the top to stop drips and cut off the air so it will solidify. Should be a safe permanent fix.
So basically you're saying someone should thread lock the feature that is suppose to save your life in the event of an accident? I'm gonna take a pass on that
@@anomamos9095 Red thread locker has quite a bit of strength actually... which is why you usually need to heat it up before undoing bolts with it. I'd bet that if properly used on a collapsible steering column it'd take less energy to break your sternum than to break the bond on the thread locker.
@@Educalifa . Who said you should use high strength red lock tight? BUT it’s still not as strong as you think it is. Thread locker doesn’t exactly work by glueing the threads together, it actually fills the gaps between threads vastly increasing the surface area of the contact between threads which significantly increases friction once it sets the glueing effect is secondary. As a glue it is not as strong at bonding as CA super glue and it is fairly brittle . Apart from all that the collapsible part of the shaft under the hood is not the only one and the under hood part would need to punch through the steering shaft mounts before it got any where near your sternum and on top of all that the kind of crash that would force the steering shaft into your chest would be likely fatal before then, at least 60 into a tree on the drivers side. All this is mute as to get the type of bond you are talking about would require the shaft to be cleaned and hit with the primer. Filling the gaps to stop the rattling will only fill the gaps and not bond sufficiently to glue the shaft.
I'm curious! I have owned two Duramax 2500s and have been lucky to never have this issue. Now that I see the shaft I have ask, has anybody taken the slip yoke apart and greased it well? Or better yet put in a zerk? I know back when I spend a lot of time offroad it was common for a slip yoke to cluck when it was dry of grease.
By the looks of things the engine bay looks more jammed up w wiring on the drivers side I'm kinda glad I have the older version also I've deleted blocked off egr deleted emmisions and have a 4 inch straight pipe exhaust the deletes helped clean up under truck and in engine bay I apologize I have a terrible time typing in this comment section of the youtube video
I noticed your use Mobil 1 oil I have a question if you can answer it I have a 96 Chevy Tahoe with a 5.7L vortec engine when I was running conventional oil it didn't use a drop, and it doesn't smoke, when I switched over to full synthetic mobile1's 5w30 about every 1500 miles itll use 7/4 quart it's not leaking or smoking, and the tailpipes clean, should I go to a thicker weight I've tried 10w 30 Mobil1 and the same thing.
If the noise comes back, I'd find a snowblower or similar axle or chute bushing made of the hard Teflon, delrin or similar. Slide around the upper shaft and into the top of the lower. As far as retention goes, maybe a weak spring that stops on the upper knuckle and a washer on the bottom that holds the bushing in place. They make super thin plastic bushings with a shoulder and a diagonal slit in the side to wrap it around a shaft without removing it. Just a spring maintaining a slight pressure might be enough to keep it from rattling. A lot of the Japanese cars with extendable columns already have a spring there when I think of it. I remember some columns shooting out on their own when you release the position latch? I don't remember make or model though.
Wow almost 20 years and they still haven’t figured out the steering shaft?? On my 2002, which I bought new, I put in a different “all new upgraded” shaft every 30k until I sold it a few years ago. Each time was supposed to be “final” solution, but within 30k… clunkunkunk.
Does this noise sound like a really loud popping ball joint sometimes? No consistency or repeatability? Been chasing that type of noise on my 2018 1500 for 35k miles. Cant believe GM is still using that garbage filter location on the duramax after all these years.
If u fill the filter let it sit for a minute all the oil get sucked into the element then fill it half way again I usually just fill it and thread it in as fast as I can rather spill a little Even doing this it takes 15 sec to get oil pressure
I had the steering shaft replaced on my 2020 and its a night and day difference. Now I need them to center my steering wheel as its between 10 and 11 o'clock driving down a flat road. Annoying
Extend the steering intermediate shaft then use a rubber plug and fill it with thick white grease and then compress the shaft the rubber will stop the grease from escaping this forcing tje grease into the space in the slide part of the shaft . this is a gm service tsb.
Not to pretend like I know everything but I can’t imagine a solvent based cleaner like sea foam is good for a high pressure fuel pump, let alone a CP4. Especially being poured full strength like that right into the filter. No lubricity. But that’s just my opinion. To each their own.
the seafoam actually has lubrication properties as well as a cleaner, and it is a petroleum based product so it burns just like diesel. Also worth noting, the can only fills half the filter, so its immediately diluted as soon as the fuel pump kicks on.
I thought I put a graphic on there to say something, but it's an injector cleaner and lubricant all at the same time, plus also acts like a fuel so it will burn just like diesel. The main reason is to not have as much air in the system when you prime the pump and start the truck also.
@@gavinj.8330 I used to fill the fuel filter with Dexron ATF when servicing heavy equipment aand trucks. It worked great. An over the road trucker showed me that years ago when their fujel filters used to gel from the cold. This got the truck back on the road. Also the ATF cleans the injectors a little when it fires up. This method worked great on evreything I serviced including my Cummins Diesel pickups.
LT what percent tint do you still have on that truck? I remember originally you said you thought about taking it off since it was too dark. Just curious as to what you did.
@Jim jibroni I have a 50% shield, 30% front two windows and then 17% over the rear three which has the 20% privacy glass from the factory. Thinking about going darker
Lots of issues with these steering columns and any time folks take issues to the dealers. Not so sure about buying GM vehicles if the dealers are refusing to fix stuff.
That stock off the shelf excuse was so typical GM dealer, After someone spends the kinda money you spent on that truck you wound think that they would at the least admit to hearing it, this is why I have never bought a new GM product both my Mother and my brother did and both got the very same excuse.
I won’t be buying GM anytime soon. Buddys 2020 trailboss just had engine rebuilt. My sisters Cruze was a piece of junk the minute she bought it. Anecdotal evidence for sure, but I’m still not taking my chances
@@andrewbrack77 I tried to order a 2023 F350 as I wanted 1200 pound feet. They told me 10 months. I bought a 2022 GMC Sierra HD AT4 3500 off of a lot. No markup. Doesn't pull my 42 foot fifth wheel as well as I would like up the Ike Gauntlet, but you dance with who brung ya...
This is actually a old Chevy problem from the GMT 800s as well they sold a kit where you would inject grease through the bottom of the shaft by removing that weird clip pin you literally have to do it every six months or the clunk will come back
Never seen anyone pre fill a filter with seafoam before. Seen people use ATF though. Hows Seafoam do in diesel? I only ask because seafoam has pretty good amount of alcohol in it and thats a big no no in diesel fuel. I would think adding MMO or ATF would be safer.

GM trucks have had that column noise in the upper steering shaft for the last 20+ years. I've replaced a ton of them on the early 2000's.
bought new 1999+ silverado that had several replaced in the first year or two due to the same issue. Why do these maufacturers not learn?
It seems that all car and trucks of all brands have this clunk after a couple years. It’s normal. People are picky nowadays.
The truck seems to run pretty quiet overall, especially for a diesel. Thanks for the video!
@@scottleggejr i have to agree, the new l5p is a different beast compared to my 05 & 07 duramax.. so smooth
So that saft did it come from gm or did it come from an aftermarket source
Mines doing same thing dealer is giving me the run around
Lt it's north Maine Steve I own a 08 duramax lmm I noticed u stepped up filter quality good idea I noticed u using Mobil delvac I wanted to tell u about the oil I use it's brand name Can-pe-co in a yellow jug .they have para synthetic , heavy duty conventional what I use every 5 ,000 mi. Also they have full synthetic. Diesel fuel systems of Maine swears by this oil after tearing g
high mileage diesel engines apart and having minimal wear noticed . Also this cen pe co oil has the additives in it that commercial oils no longer put in due to environmental reasons or whatever. I guess the anti wear additives is what puts this oil in a different league I have 235,000 miles and my duramax and this oil keeps her sounding great
How has that intermediate shaft been holding up ???
they have been saying this one is the fix for the last 3 revisions. just got mine done and have a Fleece fuel filter ill put on next week. also have a Amsoil Bypass oil filter system going on.
If you have an injection pump failure the dealer will point straight to that 5 micron filter (which will probably be in bypass 1/2 the time)
That 5 micron filter is the engine oil filter. The fuel filters do not bypass, if they get plugged, you walk .I cannot imagine unfiltered fuel reaching the high pressure system.
The Magnuson-Moss act should protect you. Seemed like a high quality product.
at your expense and years. it will cost more then a new engine.
on the sea foam. that can is meant to be deluded with 25 gal of fuel. that gives it time to clean. running it all through that quick probably didnt clean much.
Lol
My 22 sierra denali gasser started making that steering noise at 4,000 miles. Progressively getting worse.
Great video. Always enjoy LT
I work at the plant. What do you want us to change ?
I just picked up a Borgeson steering shaft for my 2004 GMC 3500 crew cab dually, I’ve had the same problem since new
Love the content as always LT. Just dropping in to once again vote procharger for the stepside
I have a 2019 gmc duramax ,I've had it into the dealer a few times with a similar nose, still there ,about 25000 miles on it now . I wonder if it shares the same shaft?
Say goodbye to the oil pump 😂
I have the same clunk in the steering wheel on my 21 Silverado 2500hd Duramax, it was built Feb of 21. I'm going to see now if my dealer can do it under warranty
they will
Love the Utah mountains with snow!
GM makes such high quality parts you have to replace things within 3 years. Crazy!
GM= Garbage Materials.
Only trucks I like are Ram first choice an then Ford an i Only run 3/4 ton trucks.
I'm thinking about getting a PPE oil and trans filter for my LB7 Duramax. The magnet is cool. Everything from the OEMs is usually made to bare minimum spec.
definitely a worthwhile upgrade for any truck
Amen on the filter!
So basically you're saying someone should thread lock the feature that is suppose to save your life in the event of an accident? I'm gonna take a pass on that
@@Educalifa thread locker is not welding, it actually has very little strength in shear otherwise you would never be able to undo anything.
Any reason you didn’t prefer the BIGGER PPE oil filter? I’m debating which to use. Thanks
on the 2020+ trucks you've got to relocate the fuel cooler pump, PPE have a bracket and hoses to do just that, but I haven't done it yet.
That was the tsb for them back in the early 2000s. Grease the splines and no more clunk.
By the looks of things the engine bay looks more jammed up w wiring on the drivers side I'm kinda glad I have the older version also I've deleted blocked off egr deleted
emmisions and have a 4 inch straight pipe exhaust the deletes helped clean up under truck and in engine bay I apologize I have a terrible time typing in this comment section of the youtube video
You could check your pcv system for a stuck valve or one that is gunked up. Just a suggestion.
That clunk was in my 2015 Chev. 2500 HD. Same BS, found nothing, fixed it myself and took the old part in and got my $ back.
Have you figured out better map lighting for the driver and passenger seats?
First ! Woohoooo
I use filter mags on all my filters.....excellent investment !
🍪
That blue clip on the fuel line gave me hell when I did mine!
it took me forever to figure out how it worked.
Wow almost 20 years and they still haven’t figured out the steering shaft?? On my 2002, which I bought new, I put in a different “all new upgraded” shaft every 30k until I sold it a few years ago. Each time was supposed to be “final” solution, but within 30k… clunkunkunk.
yeah, thats what I'm worried about here, how soon the noise will come back. luckily, its not too bad of a job to do
Does this noise sound like a really loud popping ball joint sometimes? No consistency or repeatability? Been chasing that type of noise on my 2018 1500 for 35k miles.
Cant believe GM is still using that garbage filter location on the duramax after all these years.
not really a popping sound per se, but definitely a rattle you could feel in the steering wheel when going over bumps or uneven ground
Fuel the Al Gor ithm and support the RPM Act.
So the slip portion of that shaft is in the cab? No wonder you could hear it.
yup, right under the dash
Is there any particular reason why you went with that new fuel filter kit vs the blackmarket performance one with the cat filter?
Not familiar with the black market one, but if it uses the Cat 1R-0750 filter I don’t think that has a built in water separator?
Do you know if someone makes a new steering shaft design for a 2017 F250 diesel?
A reminder to keep my old truck.
Really like the content, look forward to every video.
Great video LT! Cool truck.
If u fill the filter let it sit for a minute all the oil get sucked into the element then fill it half way again I usually just fill it and thread it in as fast as I can rather spill a little
Even doing this it takes 15 sec to get oil pressure
I had the steering shaft replaced on my 2020 and its a night and day difference. Now I need them to center my steering wheel as its between 10 and 11 o'clock driving down a flat road. Annoying
Extend the steering intermediate shaft then use a rubber plug and fill it with thick white grease and then compress the shaft the rubber will stop the grease from escaping this forcing tje grease into the space in the slide part of the shaft . this is a gm service tsb.
I like how you go into detail i always learn somthing from the vidios good tips tho !
Did I miss where you explained why a can of seafoam goes in the fuel filter?
The main reason is to not have as much air in the system when you prime the pump and start the truck also.
an article worth a quick read seafoamworks.com/questions-and-answers/how-do-i-use-sea-foam-to-prime-a-diesel-fuel-filter-solved/
The backs doors and rear glass are still 5% but I switched the front windows to 30%, windshield is 35% I think.
@@LawrenceTolman Is that 5% over a factory 20% privacy?
@Jim jibroni I have a 50% shield, 30% front two windows and then 17% over the rear three which has the 20% privacy glass from the factory. Thinking about going darker
@Jim jibroni Law enforcement as far as I know doesn't have a way to measure windshield tint.
Lots of issues with these steering columns and any time folks take issues to the dealers. Not so sure about buying GM vehicles if the dealers are refusing to fix stuff.
Would loading the splines with grease take up the "slop" on the steering shaft?
Yes. It "can" but it's a stop-gap fix.
Anecdotal evidence for sure, but I’m still not taking my chances
how do you wash your truck
Hell yeah. Nice work my dude.

High School Shop Teacher Voice: Diesel fuel in your eyes isn’t going to be fun…GET THOSE GLASSES ON YOUR EYES!!

Hey was your truck squeaking when hitting bumps
no, no squeaking noises
505hp and over 1k torque in the 2023 duramax and a new interior... what do you think LT? Is this beast getting traded in?
I don't know, that does sound appealing though
Nope. Only 940 pound feet. A bump of only 30 over the present trucks.
@@richfarfugnuven6308 yeah unfortunately less they rumored
@@andrewbrack77 I tried to order a 2023 F350 as I wanted 1200 pound feet. They told me 10 months. I bought a 2022 GMC Sierra HD AT4 3500 off of a lot. No markup. Doesn't pull my 42 foot fifth wheel as well as I would like up the Ike Gauntlet, but you dance with who brung ya...
This is actually a old Chevy problem from the GMT 800s as well they sold a kit where you would inject grease through the bottom of the shaft by removing that weird clip pin you literally have to do it every six months or the clunk will come back
I wonder if the newer trucks with electric steering are made different
Never seen anyone pre fill a filter with seafoam before. Seen people use ATF though. Hows Seafoam do in diesel? I only ask because seafoam has pretty good amount of alcohol in it and thats a big no no in diesel fuel. I would think adding MMO or ATF would be safer.
Not sure 🤔 on the content, but they say right on the bottle it adds lubricity to fuel and it’s good to pre-fill diesel filters with
