  • Welsh immigrants arrived in Nebraska in the mid-nineteenth century, among the many settlers and homesteaders who sought a new life on the Great Plains. Like other immigrants, they brought their own, Celtic language, deeply-rooted faith and cultural traditions. Pobl y Paith/People of the Prairie tells the story of Nebraska's Welsh settlers through historical photographs and interviews with their descendants who keep the memory of their ancestors, and America's Welsh heritage, alive today.
Also available on Blu-Ray & DVD for museums, libraries and Welsh-American cultural events and societies.

Great documentary. We r from North East India.Welsh missionaries saved our tribe 4rm opium addiction. Our church Presbyterian Church of India was previously known as the Welsh Calvinistic Methodist Mission. To this day we still sing Welsh hymns translated in our languages like
Cwm Rhondda,Diniweikydd,Calon Lan,Gwahodiad etc. My geat grandpa converted during the Welsh Revival n became a minister. Today PCI has about 1.7 million adherents.

I only knew of the Celtic push from the north to the south and settled in Kentucky, Tennessee, northern Arkansas and southern Missouri. They were a vast mixture of Scot, Irish and Welsh who all followed each other to those locations. And being a Welsh American myself it was very entertaining and interesting to learn of the Northern Welsh......Nice video. Oh yeah my user name "Scott Free" was given to myself after being divorced........I'm actually Welsh decent.

Lovely to see my Nebraskan Williams family who came over to Bangor in North Wales in 2019 for our family reunion. Richard Williams was my great grandmother Eliza Sarah's brother as was Isaac Williams. My Taid was named Isaac and his brother was Richard. Living near Liverpool I spend lots of my time in the second hand book shops rescuing old Welsh history books which I'd love to pass to the Welsh Heritage Centre in Wymore. One is a dictionary listing all the Welsh dialect words from Bangor in the 1900s. I know they'll be treasured in Wymore.

Funny, I'm in Wisconsin. And about 10 miles up the road from us is the town of Wales. All the street signs and names are in the Welsh language. Also, in the southwestern portion of our state there happens to be a good sized Cornish community out that way. I know a lot of people with last names like Evans, Davis, Hughes, Llewellyn, Lloyd, etc.. up here as well. This was good to watch. Thanks for uploading this!

Great little video, we loved it. We visit the USA quite a lot and are really interested in the Welsh community in America from the farmers to the miners. We used to live in a street in Porthcawl, South Wales called Philadelphia Road. Apparently named after someone who wanted to emigrate to Pennsylvania who decided to buy some land in the new docks in Porthcawl instead.

I finally learned what the Welsh phrase for ' shut your mouth' meant. I could say the phrase in Welsh but never knew its meaning. When a child I had asked my Welsh father if he knew a bad Welsh word. I remembered he laughed and said his father would say (now that's the phrase in Welsh that I can say but not spell) to his horses when he was upset with them. I am so pleased to have that mystery solved. I belong to the Robert's family of Wisconsin, 1845 and the Richard's family of New York, 1845. Thank you for video.

As another person has already commented , the biggest battle Wales will face is to retain any national Identity, strong national identities are being weakened all over europe.
The whole idea is to dilute nationalism/patriotism, you can see it happening before your eyes.

I can trace the Evans family and many others like Rees Roberts Thomas and Lewis STRAIGHT back to king Owain and prince Madoc!

Greetings from Australia. Oooh! I have Rees, Thomas and Lewis , and maybe Roberts in my Family Tree. Are you on Ancestry? I'm 73% Welsh ethnicity and all grandparents and some further back were Welsh. I'd love to know if I'm a descendant of Owain and Madoc.

@@wor53lg50 I don't have any kings, princes etc. in my family tree. The closest any of my family have come to royalty is when my aunt met the late Queen Elizabeth 2nd.

@@wor53lg50 Also, as an afterthought to my last reply - Because the population of Wales was so contained in a small area and small in 'ye olde days' (and still is), genealogists state that probably most of the Welsh are related (and to Welsh royalty), therefore your tongue-in-cheek statement would be correct. I've saved my paper crown from the Christmas cracker and have recycled my children's cut-out castle and princess dress-ups, shields and swords. My ancestor went to Pennsylvania he helped William Penn settle a community of Quakers he was the first governor of Pennsylvania Lord Thomas Lloyd. His son Marmaduke stayed in Wales and was killed by Oliver Cromwells men at the battle of Saint Fagans. I live less than 1 mile from the field on which he was killed over 300 years ago. I also found out Marmadukes son was a member of parliament and adviser to King Charles the II and we started Lloyds Bank. History is crazy I can't even get a loan at Lloyds for £1000 now.
