Don't be embarassed. Most of us are here to get help and ideas, because we have messes. It's nice to see honesty, and to get advice from a person who has the same challenges we do, instead of making up organizing stuff for their model looking home.

I noticed your meat was in the middle of the fridge above the fruit. One thing I picked up while working in a restaurant was to store things safely you want to be careful of what you put vertically on top of what. The trick I was told was the higher the temperature you have to cook it to be safe, the lower it should be in the fridge so that if anything were to drip down it wouldn’t contaminate anything below it in a way that wouldn’t be cooked off. For example raw foods like fruits/ veggies on top, then eggs and fish, then chicken, then pork and beef on bottom. In a household fridge I would normally just devote specifically the bottom shelf to any raw or defrosting meats and most other stuff ends up okay.

The shelves are covered in Contact paper, and are made of glass, so I doubt any meat blood is going to drip from one to another.

I learned the same about cross contamination from Alton Brown. Meat should be lower than produce and in a spill proof container. Better safe than e-coli.
Another thing I learned from him is to keep a few plastic bottles filled with water on the freezer. Whenever I cook a big batch - beans, chili, etc - I set the full huge hot pot on the full sink with the frozen bottles and in half an hour it's cool enough to go into the fridge. Less time in the "danger zone" of temperature where bacteria can grow.

That’s a great point, however for me that bottom of my fridge is the warmest, and at the top everything freezes. I rent so I can’t do much about it except rearrange. I usually put dressing and waters at the top bc it’s too cold for anything else, they freeze sometimes too!

    • @amandaribofpalmetto
      @amandaribofpalmetto 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@dianak.8209 my fridge does that too on the top shelf, can't keep sour cream up there or it gets ruined because when it thaws it's an awful texture. I put meats in the middle in a bowl so if anything leaks out of the bag it goes into the bowl. We have glass shelves, too, but you'd be surprised what can drop down anyway.

    • @dianak.8209

@@amandaribofpalmetto yes! I always put meats in bowls. I get to grossed out to deal with cleaning that up!

I had similar cabinets in my last house (with the same silver strips and shelf clips). Instead of a lot of risers, I bought extra shelves (big hardware stores can cut them to size for you) and clips and adjusted all of the shelves to what I needed. The extra shelves worked wonders for my organization!

Pro-tip (from someone who comes from the country of spices and had to mix them with another cuisine/ country’s spices): organize them alphabetically left to right or top to bottom. It saves a minute every time you’re looking for that lesser used spice and let’s you know when you never had one to begin with.

Girl I absolutely love you for this video. I have been needing to organize so badly . I would go to the dollar tree and throw a bunch of organizing buckets in my cart but then I would stop and realize that I actually need to have a plan in mind, as well as measurements. This is so helpful. Especially the mud room. My son is a little younger than yours. Thanks so much for this! You're the best.

Thank you for another bang on video. Not only do I not have a mud room in my small Apt., I didn’t even know what a mud room was ? So, when I walk into my Apt I am literally walking into my tiny dining room/living room.No closet and nowhere to put a catchal because I need a place to eat and the kitchen is only big enough to stand in and turn on a dime. There is a decent size pantry that holds all my groceries, tubleware, napkins, paper towels laundry detergent and cleaners( minimal ) and very well organized .I have one small linen closet( minimal towels and sheets and some toiletries on it’s floor because my tiny bathroom has no countertops-yes, you heard right NO,NOT ONE COUNTERTOP ! Found a small white 3 drawer piece of furniture that fits perfectly between camod and sink and it has saved me. Brushes, makeup, soap absolute necessities for a woman.Have donated or thrown out so much STUFF even before I found you and now your helping me take that leap of faith and get rid of,throw out, throw out - how very liberating.Adore your channel,Happy Holidays❤️💚😘.

That seems like a great idea in theory but over time I can’t see how that would work. Our rotation changes and the size of the products may change .. plus condensation would pull those labels away. I think I will save time and skip the labels

Great job! Kallie, I had the same problem with my spices. I was able to find a co-op type store, where I could buy smaller amounts of spices and put them in my own spice jars. I have been doing this for a few years and it has worked great. You might want to inquire locally to see if there is anything like that in your area. I also have purchased the clear cutting mats, at Dollar Tree, to put on the glass shelves in my refrigerator. They work great, I just routinely remove them and wash them, then put them back. TYFS.

I loved this video. Miles space and your labeling reminded me of when my son was young and beginning to put things away I printed pictures of the things and stuck them to the outside of his dressers and drawers. This way he could see a picture of shoes, diapers, shorts, pants etc. and know where they went. It was awesome and he felt very empowered and accomplished to be able to help put things away and to have his own space. Thanks again for another quick but very useful video.

I agree that thinking about how to organize a space before buying supplies is beneficial. I also think it is important to think about your personality & what you are willing to do to keep up with a storage/organizational system. I have seen videos in which people have food in different containers, and thought, "Nope!" If it works for me it may not work for you, so it pays to be honest with yourself. I think people need to be realistic about themselves. and organize by how they live, not how they think they should live.

This was sooooo helpful! Our house was built in 1940 and it still has the original cabinets as well! Our dishes don’t fit in the top cupboards. The bottom cupboards are super deep. Barely any cabinets to even begin with. The water heater is in the kitchen taking up even more real estate. We used some metal shelving from our last home in the corner where we store pots and pans, appliances, our dinner plates, etc. No pantry. You have some great ideas! We too plan to remodel... someday, but for now we need some better flow and organization in here as well. Thank you for inspiring me!

I like to label things too! I find that because I am a visual person, labeling things helps me feel more together and it helps me keep things organized. You are not alone in having dumping grounds for things. I find when I get home from work that I dump things, but then I am working on taking care of what I dumped before I go to bed. That is something new I have been working on. Thank you for sharing your ideas. I am learning a lot!

I label EVERYTHING in my kitchen! I have all my cabinet shelves labeled with what dish goes where, the pantry is labeled with the types of foods that goes where, and of course, my refrigerator shelves are labeled! This works for me; now if I could just get my husband to read the labels! But at least he helps me.

Good for you on teaching Miles independence. It is the best thing you can do for your child other than loving them for who they are. Mine helped with laundry, helped pick up, etc... Her help wasn't always perfect, but it taught her how to do things over the years.

Callie, great job and outcome! I love some of your suggestions and will incorporate them into my own home. I also have a labeler and I think I would die without it! It is the best thing and does more toward keeping you organized than anything else I own. I have, however, never done the same thing in the refrigerator and I think that’s a wonderful idea. I have those clear refrigerator bins and turntables and they work really, really well but I’ve noticed that I go looking through them to find things instead of actually labeling them with what is inside each one. I think I’m going to go back and re-look at that and see if there is a better way to organize that so I’m not digging through it. I can’t thank you enough for this and I know it’s hard to let everybody see all your stuff but you have no idea what it does for the rest of us because, believe it or not, we all have stuff that looks just like that! Thank you so much for sharing and have a wonderful Memorial Day!

Love this! We also have a lot of vertical kitchen space, so wire shelves have been a life saver. Got a cute wooden step stool in my favorite color (teal). It's been taken over by my toddler as a desk, despite her having a kids table and a child sized desk. Seriously considering rearranging my kitchen so my baking supplies and common cooking spices are in easy reach, as opposed to the short cabinet over our oven and shoved into the back of our pantry cupboard (super deep shelves in there).

I use a turntable to put my spices on, in alphabetical order. That way I can use a higher shelf and still get to it easily.

My cabinets are original to our house and it was built in the 30s as well. They are like yours: weird heights and shapes and just gross. You gave me so many great ideas! Especially the under cabinet baskets and spice baskets! Great video!

I saw a kitchen Aid Mixer. For me- taking it out and storing it on the counter has meant it gets used so much more than it did before. I now use it all the time. Just an idea!
    PS - Adorable little boy
