My father was a rockhound most of his life from a very young age. He passed some of that passion on to 3 of his 8 kids. He made jewelry for friends and family. One of his prized posessions, rock wise, l now have. It is a Native American ax head made of Agatized Petrified Wood. Absolutely beautiful. He always loved Agate for it's varied colors and patterns. One piece of jewelry he made for a childhood friend of ours. That friend picked out the Agate and the cut he wanted, gave it to his mother for Christmas. Every time l saw that woman dressed up, she was wearing that pendant. She loved that stone.

Bewild Erment, loved seeing the word "rockhound." Sounds like my dad. He, too, made jewelry for family and friends. My aunt wore a big ring--a jade cabochon set in yellow gold, that he made for her. After she got it, she wore it the rest of her long life. Lots of stories of rockhounding, all fondly recalled by your post.

I once cut a rock with a machine similar like the one you used, and I found out that it was really fun. Especially when you look at the rock and see how “Beautiful” the rock is when you cut it in half. I’m not an expert on rocks but you never know what you will find in the rocks until you cut into them. I find it’s an Art in doing so. Thank you for your video’s. I’ll continue watching them.

Some years back I was walking in a park close to my home and saw a large rock of about 15 lbs, and knew it to be an Agate, so I took it home. It sat in our front yard for at least four or five years when an opportunity arose where I could trade some work to a company which cuts granite counter tops and got them to cut it into a large cube which weighs about 11.6 lbs which he polished to a to a smooth shine on all sx sides and it now sits in our curio cabinet in the living room. How did I know it was an agate? Agate has a peculiar aspect, in that when it is hit with a hard object it forms little half moon scars which the gray one he cut second had some of, and as you can see it is a nice agate.
Many years ago I was four wheeling north of Mt. Shasta California, where you could pick up fist-sized agates on top the ground like it was an easter-egg hunt. I got there by traveling up Dead Indian Road out of Ashland Oregon and then making a right turn into a forest rangers four wheel drive road and went south for miles toward Shasta.

Maybe I'm too easily pleased, but an agate is an agate. Plus to my understanding they are a lot rarer in the U.P.. I have several mottled agates, and they have their own character. I really like the roll of the chert banding. Not many agates even do that. Also I thought that the first one might even be Orange Granite, so I probably wouldn't have even picked it up; I've been fooled SO many times by it, but maybe I need to look a little closer in the future. Thank you.

It would be kind of a "low grade" agate because it's not as defined

I have a big honkin' rock I found on the lake I grew up on, last time I was back for a visit. (NW WI) Been toting it around for years now. May I send you some pics of it on FB to see what you think?

    I love that chert.
I see wolf and eagle in it.

I’m not quite sure on the differences between the different kinds of microcrystalline quarts? Like flint, chert, agate, and jasper ? Is it just a lapidary term or is something different compositionally?

That chert was really good, but the agate is kinda blah. Both are keeper tho.😎
