I'm an atheist, but I think that Nick believes in God. His whole career is a struggle with faith. His live shows, if you've been to one, feel very religious.
Well, 'research' (a quick look at Wikipedia) suggests he believes in the possibility of God, at least; and maybe in a God but one that is not a 'personal' God (or, as per the song, an 'interventionist' God). His statements on the subject are nuanced. Possibly his views have simply evolved or changed over time. Possibly he himself is not always clear on the subject. But he does not appear to be an atheist, i.e. someone who actually denies the existence of God.
Atheists do not deny the existence of gods, but instead simply have no belief. Atheism is usually defined incorrectly as a belief system. Atheism is not a disbelief in gods or a denial of gods; it is a lack of belief in gods. There is a subtle, but important, difference. Try to understand.

My 10 year old daughter daughter rang me while on holidays begging me to come home, she missed me so much, said she would pay the flight home from her savings of 5 euros. This song was on the radio and I had to hold back my tears.
When I first heard this (April 2019) on my car radio I stopped to write down the name of the song and the artist. It was something I wanted to play to Clara, my daughter. I doubt she'd have liked it. But she did humour my eclectic tastes and would have listened. But that never happened. Within three months she was dead. She was 26. Now I play this song over and over again.
Such beauty. Nick Cave is an artist in the purest sense. So many songs make me feel. Maybe it is the polar extremes of extreme violence, (Stagger Lee) or a song like this. I won't go into all the great tunes he has penned and performed, as anyone here already knows it. Just a master. Thank you Nick.

@Russell D I TOTALLY understand where you're coming from about Nick's voice, I've heard him speak before...interviews and such, but I saw his conversations tour here in Australia and I just melted, he is the most polite , intelligent, interesting person ( with an amazing sense of humour...and no nonsense bullshit) I think I have EVER heard speak...his voice will stay with me forever . And his beautiful wife Susie, so elegant and graceful, and so softly spoken....I just love her. I honestly believe she's the best thing ever to happen to Nick. You can actually 'feel ' how deeply in love they are.
My time in this realm is coming to an end. I've been blessed with love, respect, kindness and so much more from My Love, Mr. Chris Williams. I have no way to repay him for these gifts, other than words of gratitude and the love I carry with me. There's much I fear about this journey into the unknown. If I could ask for one thing after I depart, it would be for him to remember the old Dr. Seuss saying; "Don't cry cuz it's over, smile because it happened." He knows I believe something as precious as love, to be eternal. I pray that one day, we'll find each other again and he'll return into my arms. I shall be waiting ♡
Nick Cave. A true iconoclast. A wonderful talent. I forgot how much I enjoyed his music until Dean sang this song on X Factor Australia. His Murder Ballads remains one of the both amazing and unique group of songs in the last 20 years.
It's my grandaughter's birthday tomorrow... and not only am I listening to this wishing so hard I could hold her in my arms on her 10th birthday... I notice this was posted 3 yrs to the day before she she was born and held in my arms. She has been my own 'personal real life Angel' since that day and seen me through many dark days. At this horrible time... the memories she has bestowed upon me keeps me going through this necessary 'self-isolation'. At this horrible time Mr Cave's song playing allows me the scope to think of past and passed loved ones and extend those thoughts to every dear soul hurting and being seperated from their own loved ones in our united unwanted situation.
This is so great and powerful song... it's my favorite pray... it's pure love... I could listen forever... and cry...and pray...and be grateful... Thank you Nick for it!!!
you hear or see in it whatever you want to hear or see in it, to me that's the beauty of his songs, for me it's definitely about love but I understand how someone might look at it in a different light and find it to be about death. Whatever meaning it has it's one of the most beautfil songs to me...
Awesome song, love Nick Cave. I watched the new version of the Movie On The Beach and nearly drove myself crazy trying to identify this song well worth the effort.
Can someone actually share this song with their partner and not feel loved and inlove? I hope not, I know I'm inlove, I pray that his love for me is genuine an true as well. If not I don't think I'll ever be able to trust my heart again. He introduced me to this song, I never heard it before and It's one of the most heart pounding, soul melting songs I've ever heard created. Thank you Nick C
I can't imagine the pain & grief Nick & his family must be going through. No parent should have to face the loss of their young child, it's meant to be the other way around. Cruel world. RIP Arthur❤️
I never believed in God... or... love like this, until I was lying next to my future fiance and she was asleep and this played on my headphones--a gift from a distant friend of Nick's.... I'll keep returning forever and amor to... the promise of love. Thanks Nick.
Thanks for posting this from the melancholy man:" "The Vicar bangin' on about this and that". That line is deeply culturally imbued, perhaps reflective of our Aussie commodity in being plain speaking, authority-critical, non-religious (not anti) and pragmatic. All present in that off-the-cuff remark; a special live moment to be cherished and a beautiful lyrical lament on the attraction of opposites and the transcendence of love.

I swear to god, this song is in EVERY SINGLE MOVIE...
One of THE greatest songs
Brings an awful lot of memories to the heart for the ones who deserve it. And they know
This is the best song ever. Thank you Mr. Cave.
Both amazing and admirable that a man of such a wealth of knowledge melancholic can still write such a song of love after so many birthday parties.
you hear or see in it whatever you want to hear or see in it, to me that's the beauty of his songs, for me it's definitely about love but I understand how someone might look at it in a different light and find it to be about death. Whatever meaning it has it's one of the most beautfil songs to me...
Emerging from under my rock - I'm attempting to educate myself a little more about this very captivating man by the name Nick Cave. Great song!
Simply Beautiful...
Thank you Nick Cave for this song
Leonard Cohen's documentary ...brought me to Nick Cave and I am grateful
Nick Cave I've never listen to your music this is my first time, "but I like it"!!!
Just beautiful...Nick Cave is a wonderful songwriter and a modern day poet ❤️
Awesome song, love Nick Cave. I watched the new version of the Movie On The Beach and nearly drove myself crazy trying to identify this song well worth the effort.
Can someone actually share this song with their partner and not feel loved and inlove? I hope not, I know I'm inlove, I pray that his love for me is genuine an true as well. If not I don't think I'll ever be able to trust my heart again. He introduced me to this song, I never heard it before and It's one of the most heart pounding, soul melting songs I've ever heard created. Thank you Nick C
how did it go? true love, at the end?
I can't imagine the pain & grief Nick & his family must be going through. No parent should have to face the loss of their young child, it's meant to be the other way around. Cruel world. RIP Arthur❤️
All my thoughts and prayers are with the family tonight. RIP Arthur.
RIP Arthur - prayers to Nick and his family. This song is perfect.
This man is the greatest creation of my generation!!!
Have looked this up after hearing Sam West read this on Pandemic Poetry. So beautiful. Another wonderful repercussion of the poetry project.
I never believed in God... or... love like this, until I was lying next to my future fiance and she was asleep and this played on my headphones--a gift from a distant friend of Nick's.... I'll keep returning forever and amor to... the promise of love. Thanks Nick.
How can people unlike this? ah well. Each unto their own *shakes head *
They have no taste or ears or understanding the pain Nick must be feeling or his family is come to that.
Smh
No words for poor Nick Cave at this tragic time,
Beautiful song. So glad I was able to hear this version. Lovely. Very comforting and peaceful.
It's not a love song, it's about divine embrace. You know, like God.
Came here to listen to Nick after hearing him playing on Ricky Gervais's Afterlife 2020 :)
me too :)
Welp, now I gotta watch that show...
@@boiledelephant it's not great
Me too! 😢
@@tipperary1082 it is great .
how can you not love that show
The bond of love needs no words-but if it does, this song is one of the most beautiful I have ever heard, describing the only bond that people have.
walk like Christ in grace and love. magic.
Lost parents unexpectedly, Dad walked like Christ, Mom was grace and love. Great verse.
Just so moving.. The music is how I hope it will be eternally..
I thought he had to be in the church to get the inspiration?
Yep can you imagine US ever gettin rha Ashes?
What a great performance the audience recognised that they had an extraordinary performance.
He is just....heartbreakingly soul full.
my generation is missing the music that nick cave sheds upon the world, so powerful and meaningful, i wish they only knew good music
