Useful reminder video for a keen amateur like me who only does these jobs occasionally. I tend to use silicon sealant on all the sink fittings where they joint to the ceramic, including the tap and plughole fitting. Where I’ve just trusted to the rubber seals in the past I’ve had problems. I only use plumbers mate on the threaded water pipe fittings. Also on a basin like that a lot of them have a couple of fixing holes for screwing to the wall so you need to get a pair of basin wall fixing screws (a threaded stud with a plastic screw fixing that clamps the basin back to the wall). Once the cabinet and basin are fitted you also need to silicon joint the gap to the wall. I don’t do soldered joints so I either use compression fittings or push fit fittings for copper. I’ve also used plastic pipe with push fit and compression fittings and that is very quick and easy to use. I realise some professional plumbers look down on plastic “ caravan plumbing” but it’s much easier to use and has been reliable for me.
Great video, before I put the waste in place I put a bit of insulating tape on the top of the rim above the aperture for the overflow as a guide to make sure that it would be aligned accurately.
This is gold mate, thank you for making these videos, I’m gonna have a crack this weekend at fitting my new sink. Your tips will definitely save me some time in troubleshooting frustrating leaks !! 👍
You are a legend, really really helped me out now so much. I only carried on listening to you when I heard you say hold tight a few weeks back as it tickled me but I haven’t stopped watching and educating myself through your videos practicing on my own system & changing, draining, refilling de-sludge rads how to replace inhibitor and adding extra rads how to balance systems for friends and family. Just booked my course. You are ace 👍🏽

Excellent video. I really like how you keep your explanations straightforward and relevant. And as a chippie from the golden age, I applaud you for your attention to quality and longevity 👏
Couldn't agree more about the pipework being neat for future repairs, nothing drives me nuts like service valves facing the back of the unit or drain offs so low you can't attach anything on them!......... Or snots of solder all over the place so it's difficult to cut the pipe where you want, flux left on fittings so they turn green, flexis bent and kinked within an inch of their life, the list is endless.
I think a good idea would be to set up your amazon affiliate account to link to tools you use day in day out... i.e. - plumbers mait - you holesaw bits for pipe holes - flux - solvent - makita tools you use. etc etc - it will all add up.
a question please , at 9:35 instead of soldering , can I use a 90 compression fitting to join the water pipes to the Tap ? another thing I noticed that there was NO trap fitting for the Waste pipe 🤨
Never seen a mixer tap fitted ,the great vid shows the flexi pipes fitted, is there any way to tighten them, ? as they look like a leak waiting to happen
Can u make a video on how to choose the right size tap faucet an how to put them on your taps please....Love watching ur videos, u make everything look so easy.
I have just bought a ceramic basin for the bathroom that just has a hole for the overflow. What sort of trap will I need, is there one where you have a hose that connects the overflow to the trap? I removed the old sink following your videos, first time I have attempted anything like this. The place where I bought the sink from didn't have a clue what I needed!
Have you got any videos on push taps? I’ve got a set of diva ones at the school I work at and the cold side always gets stuck. We had a set of swan taps before that were a nightmare to use as they were always scaling up. The diva ones I can’t seem to get into the workings in the head to either tighten the spring or clean it out.
Hi their, Can you please do a video on what to do if you've got a cold water lever tap that make a Whooshing noises, love all you tips and videos. Cheers
That valve looks good and seems easy to install but I can’t find to buy it. Can you please let me know what is it called so I can search for it. Taking on my first project and need to keep it as simple as possible. Many thanks.
Is it okay to run a waste pipe upward? It's literally only a very slight incline for about 10cm. The new sink I'm fitting to replace my broken one has a different water trap which sits lower than the waste pipe coming through the wall. So I need to use some corner pipe to bring it down a bit. I'm a programmer not a plumber so I'm doing my best lol
Great video James, there’s so many comments I couldn’t see if the question I want to ask was already asked,I’m referring to the trap think you called it a Mac valve I presume it’s McAlpine it’s like a bottle trap but it’s straight down,I looked on Graham’s plumbing site and couldn’t see one like that.Could you tell me where you obtained one. Thanks Lenny.
Do you have any tips for space saving ideas for cloakrooms? I am planning to place a surface sink on top of a WC Unit, the only issue I have is the trap being in the way of the flush unit..
Hi . I hope you can help me. I have a falcon combie boiler, it's quite old. The hot water works fine turning on and off on demand. But when i turn the central heating on it fires up and runs for about a minute then the pressure needle climbs quickly to 2 bar and it cuts out! The pressure is one bar from cold, and not losing pressure.any ideas???
I'm 6'6" tall and would dearly like to have my washbasin 10 or 20 cm higher. Unfortunately the pedestals and cabinets are all a standard height. I don't want a wall hung basin in case I leaned on it getting up. Any suggestions?
would be better if you'd weld a copper fittings with thread on those copper pipes coming from wall and just bought longer flexi hoses to connect! that way its easier to disconnect and move the cabinet away from wall, otherwise if you need to move the cabinet you have to unsolder the 90deg bends
If you ever need to replace the waste silicone is a bloody pain to get rid of let alone it makes removing the waste really difficult. Plus I would imagine most DIY-ers have a bit of silicone floating around at home but as for a tub of Plumbers Mate not so much which is why silicone is used by so many DIY-ers. I am not in a trade but I certainly think if you are going to do a job well and you want it to last I would use the best I could afford and the best product for the job. I would without a doubt go for Plumbers Mate because it still gives a good seal when used correctly but it never hardens or cures like silicone so it can be easily removed.
Plumbers Mait allows for you to replace wastes easily once they have seen better days, unless of course you plan of throwing your whole basin out of the window from frustration of trying to remove a waste that has been siliconed within an inch of its life by some trigger happy DIY-er. Silicone does have a place and some manufacturers even specify using it but if you want to be able to replace the waste in a few years once it has started to look tired or say on installing the waste it was slightly misaligned you could remove and replace easily with plumbers mait. Both give a good seal if used correctly but it would depend how good you are at installing basin wastes first time, because once that silicone cures you are going to wish you had used plumbers Mait because there will be no moving that puppy ......well not without a lot of tears....lol. Personally in the world of plumbing I am surprised no one has come up with something better by now as neither product is perfect. I just prefer the plumbers Mait because we have a siliconed waste from the previous home owners who probably hired a roofer or someone of the sort to fit the bathroom and it is bonded solid to the basin. I would either damage the sink or throw out the sink just so I can replace the waste that has now corroded in parts. I do not find silicone messy because I can use it properly it just not forgiving at all when it comes to replacing a basin waste. Like everything it is each to their own.
I’m trying to change my basin waste but the basin is already installed against the wall with silicone (nothing else) and there’s no room to use my adjustables to undo that bottom nut? Any suggestions? If thought about tube spanners. but I can’t find one big enough. Help me Sir James.
I would like to ask a question but there is no u bend under the sink I literally know nothing about plumbing but I watch most of your videos to learn it and I googled what the u bend is for and they said its to stop gasses coming back up through the pipe sorry if it is a silly question thanks in advance

Just fitted my first bathroom tap and plug thingy easy peasy. Thanks mate.
Brilliant tutorials. Helped me out so much. Subscribed, liked and recommended.
Top man, good fun and really informative and great to watch and learn things. Great guy to watch and great to see a bit of humour ....!!! Thank you

How do you tighten the pipes don’t like the idea of hand tighten pipes under pressure.
mate these vids are Awesome , it's like proper training, but for free , thanks mate ,
The definition of quality pipework 👌
Love your content😊

Thank you I'm trying to learn plumbing from your video s thank you
Very informative video, i really like those wide grip wrench pliers but couldn't see them on the link unless they have been discontinued..? Cheers
Great video mate. Just watched that then fitted my own. Cheers 👍
Plumbers mate. A thing of nightmares. It’s a plumbers enemy
Great job and video mate. All the best!
Thanks for this. It is very easy to follow and appreciated.
All your videos are very educational. Thanks
I do really enjoy your videos
Can you do a vid converting two sink taps into a single mixer?
Hi there, wanted to know why didn't you apply a p trap under the basin
that was amazing mate, you made us seem easy and seamless
Great vid, if you could clarify when you screwed the two flexi pipes to the tap, are they hand tight? I didnt see how you tightened them?
Never seen a mixer tap fitted ,the great vid shows the flexi pipes fitted, is there any way to tighten them, ? as they look like a leak waiting to happen
Can u make a video on how to choose the right size tap faucet an how to put them on your taps please....Love watching ur videos, u make everything look so easy.
"It's gone 5 so I'm bodging it and leaving" -- classic tradesman.
Where did you get the washer that goes up against the Plumbmate? We can’t find one anywhere 😫
8:05 what is that valve called?
I noticed you didn’t install a trap underneath the basin (sink), in the US we have to under the sink, is the code in UK different.
I have just bought a ceramic basin for the bathroom that just has a hole for the overflow. What sort of trap will I need, is there one where you have a hose that connects the overflow to the trap? I removed the old sink following your videos, first time I have attempted anything like this. The place where I bought the sink from didn't have a clue what I needed!
when using one of these to connect a basin waste does the soil pipe smell come up through the plug hole

We had a set of swan taps before that were a nightmare to use as they were always scaling up. The diva ones I can’t seem to get into the workings in the head to either tighten the spring or clean it out.
U not have a sink trap underneath?
no trap?
What about incompatibility between plumbers mate/putty on those non metallic washers?
Hi their, Can you please do a video on what to do if you've got a cold water lever tap that make a Whooshing noises, love all you tips and videos. Cheers
Should an S bend be put in the drain to stop potential smell from coming back up through the grey water?
Hi i love your videos. As a plumber ive learnt quite a bit as my companies quite limited. Where did you get your grips from please
They're Nerrad bro!
How much would u charge for doing this job from start to finish mate
What the value called? Under the sink
Anything on fitting countertop basin waste?
Very helpful. Thank you.
What glue do you use to join both pipes together please? And was are those join fittings called also? Thanks
That valve looks good and seems easy to install but I can’t find to buy it.
Can you please let me know what is it called so I can search for it.
Taking on my first project and need to keep it as simple as possible.
Many thanks.
Hi mate. How would u put pipe clips on if you've already put the hot and cold copper pipes on.
How did you connect those two little flexible connector to the pipe? What connectors did you use? In that standard connectors? Love the videos
Brilliant video as usual! Thank you!
shouldnt the rubber washer be the other way round or doesnt it matter , goin straight upto the plumbers mait ??? plug diagram shows the other way.

hi, do you dampen the soldering mat before using? thanks.
Is there any reason why you prefer to use plastic weld waste pipes rather than push fit?

Great videos, mate!! Keep em coming!!
Do you have any tips for space saving ideas for cloakrooms? I am planning to place a surface sink on top of a WC Unit, the only issue I have is the trap being in the way of the flush unit..
No trap.? Unusual!
Why don’t you use the ‘basin mate’ conical rubber washer to seal the waste?
Hi . I hope you can help me. I have a falcon combie boiler, it's quite old. Can you please do a video on the Bidet Shower Hose install. Used it in japan and they were awesome. Only videos available are US style.
The guy on the video is really handsome his blue eyes 😘😘 and love his accent

I noticed it looks like you ran the tap tails directly onto isolation valves. Is this detrimental to the rubber seals in the tails do you know?
Very helpful, thanks
Great video mate, is using compression joints or push fit acceptable, soldering looks a bit scary to me/😕 Thanks, Gavin
It is if you're not a plumber!
Great video, thanks
Loving it!!
Why dont you apply sealer to the top side of the waste fitting?
What is the material you used to protect the cupboard when braising the pipes?
Ash it’s a Kevlar heat-resistant pad. Made for the job!
Hi, I've got to connect to an old copper waste pipe, how do I connect a new pvc waste pipe to the copper? Love your videos btw - incredibly helpful!
How is silicon the diy way? It gives a better seal...
Ryan Hammond nothing wrong with silicone. But plumbers mate is the way forward less mess as well.

Hi how do you have the 2 15mm hot and cold feed go into a mixer tap? Mine has flexi pipes but have low water pressure so trickles out. Thanks
Could be your make of tap, it may need high pressure to operate not like a standard mixer tap
Thanks
Good job mate. Keep it up.
Cheers dude!
I would like to ask a question but there is no u bend under the sink I literally know nothing about plumbing but I watch most of your videos to learn it and I googled what the u bend is for and they said its to stop gasses coming back up through the pipe sorry if it is a silly question thanks in advance
That was what he used at the top of the pipe work. Works the same way but without the bend
thank for vedio for basin fitting..
What is that glu name what do you put this name
Hey buddy where did you get those wicked adjustable pliars. I need to get a pair!
They're from Nerrad mate.
James can u buy a btu device for working btu per room some2 told me there is a device that if u bring it into a room it measures wide by length by height and it works out the btu do u know anything like that or what calculator do u use

House with kids and a wife that's always cold .(even on holiday in Egypt she was cold) so I'll take an explosion over hearing nagging and crying kids.
I've left the front cover off the oil boiler and check the valve constantly to make sure it doesn't raise above 1.3 bar .

new one fitted I'm still alive :)
Wife happy .
Sorted
