Best thing is when you isolate the tap using a service valve., but it leaks. So you try and turn off the stopcock to change the isolating valves but then find the stopcock is Jammed. So I try and turn the stopcock of in the road only to discovered it’s buried in a meter of dirt. This is what customers don’t understand a 20 minute job turns into 2hrs

I've never heard the term "tube spanner" before. They were always called "box spanners" back in my day.

    I'm familar with "mistake" 5.
    Slightly different cause though.
Turned the water off at the mains to replace a kitchen sink. There were no isolators on the existing feed to the sink.
There was a ground floor cloak room near the front door with a toilet and small corner was basin.
House owner goes to the shops while I'm working leaving her young kids with me.
I wasn't keen on the idea but what are you going to do?
    They're playing outside.
One of them comes in for pee and goes to wash his hands like the good boy he is.
Puts the plug in the sink and turns the tap on.
Of course nothing comes out so he just goes back out to play leaving the plug where it was.
I turn the mains back on and I'm checking my work and I hear the sound of water pouring.
So I'm immediately thinking kitchen sink right? Bewildered.
Then I realise it's coming from the hallway.
Rushed into the hallway and found the problem. The sink in the cloak room.
It was only running for about two minutes but that's about 6 gallons.
All down the hallway and almost entered the kitchen.
Bloody nightmare. I had to lift the carpet and mop it all up.
I explained to the lady when she got back.
    Little lad fessed up thankfully.
But I tell you what. Lesson learned.
Never turn the water back on before you have done a reconoitre of all taps.

One thing I always did if the water was off, is to offer to install Iso valves....so much easier on future jobs than draining down the house.

Thank you for your videos. You’ve taught me so much and also saved me a wedge! (Don’t worry I subscribed from the first video)
Quick question.. just to confirm as I saw the tap above the stopcock was running (as well as the taps just just installed lol) once you turned the water back all. Do you need to turn ALL the taps off before turning the water back on. Also… I noticed you did change the taps with the adjustable wrench so it is possible with this and you don’t need to get a tube spanner or a claw?

A seemingly easy job that easily turns into a pain in the stones. My hot tap handle sheared off due to limescale corrosion. Cold water tap going same way. Think I’ll get a plumber in to install two new taps. 😊

Turn the boiler off or exertion.., check the float valve is operational on toilets and attic cistern when filling back on, change fibre washers on tap connector , valve not holding, open kitchen tap, only half open iso valve at start of fill . Incase anything is open...lol do it all the time.. and allows less blow out of your taps while venting air, takes a bit longer but you don't get dirty water over your nice white grout..

Biggest mistake I ever saw when working in a posh hotel : hotel ordered shiny crosswater taps with cross head , all very design and all that .. only problem they found once the plumber had taken everything apart : the tap seat was so close to the fitted wall mirror behind the sinks that the tap heads could not fully turn without hitting the mirror !!!
Why don’t the web sites give better technical measurements to all parts ??

    • @nobodydoesithalfasgoodasyou

      Just cut the handle shorter

    • @lordlucan7655
      @lordlucan7655 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@nobodydoesithalfasgoodasyou they ended up taking a different style head that completely looked odd . The spindles that made up the 4 way cross head could only be altered by cutting the chrome stems and recutting the threads . This was an option a local machine shop offered but at a huge cost in the initial run .
The person who purchased the bathroom decor had a shiny catalogue but didn’t think in terms of final placement .
I think when the initial bathroom fitting took place during renovations , nobody thought about future maintenance or replacement parts

🤔 not something I would have expected you to say.
You don't put jointing compound on fibre washers as it stops them from swelling 🙄 put them in, nip them up, if they weep a bit nip a bit more, if they continue to week let the washer swell as its what it's designed to do.
So that would be another mistake😂
