    Keep in mind that the Distrowatch popularity ranking only applies to its own pages, not the actual distributions. More people have visited the MX Linux page, but Distrowatch doesn't know how many of those page visitors have ever installed MX Linux.

    • @RogerHolden
      @RogerHolden 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely - being top of DistroWatch does not make it the most popular distro...

      It's still top 3 distro along with mint and Ubuntu. Though Ubuntu is out of the top 5 lots use Ubuntu and mate edition . We're never know for sure as there's so many good ones like elementary , zorin etc

    A follow up post after watching your video again: System info is presented 2 ways for a reason. GUI for casual information. The CLI is for those needing to post the info into a forum post for help. The forum requires this info by rules for helping the poster. Making it simple for the new user to get the info in the format that is required.
    Good video ALU.

    I am using mx since ver 17, and its better and better with every new release. Its good and stable with great out of the box software and setup. Feels like everything is simple to do, they have in mind new linux users etc.. For me only con is slow boot as you said (good review by the way).
    I use it on my desktop, but on my laptop my choice is manjaro kde with which I am oversatisfied, and that's why I don't need to try mx kde..

    Thanks for the nice review, I tested MX just days ago, I am from Debian and I find MX is very unusual, the installer is not like most of other distros. MX seems run faster than Debian but the interface is little strange to me, still testing can't say too much about it, but good to have a distro that stands out from the rest. Btw this is funny, when I first look at the video title screen I thought it was a promotion video of a new credit card, this screen layout looks like one to me ha !

    as a (very) oldschool Debian user, I did drink the coolaid and installeed MX Linux just to take a look. I did not expect much, but man am I surprised. This is a fantastic distribution that just adds all the little bells and whistles to the rock solid Debian core. I would have never thought it possible for anything to replace my good old Debian (as a daytrader I value stability over everything) but it did happen with MX Linux. (switched from xfce to KDE Plasma.. guess I'm getting old ^^)
    It just combines simplicity, beauty, performance, stability, and is super userfriendly. It just does what it should and doesn't get in the way. It just works....

    Thanks for this review. I use MX Linux as well as Manjaro so I deal with both Debian and Arch. I've actually both Mepis and Antix before they merged. A good merger, by the way. KDE worked well as the MX Linux desktop. It does everything well, hardware integration is superb, the footprint is light and configurations were easy BUT my one and only problem with it, and I can't figure it out, is Blue Tooth kept dropping out on me. No such problem with Manjaro. On a very old system with a BT dongle running Lubuntu worked as well so it's some tweak or glitch in MX I haven't quite figured out. I'm weak in the terminal but I get better everytime I use it.

  • @dans5388

    I've been watching TH-cam videos and reading a whole bunch of internet articles about different Linux distros for about a month now. I have zero experience of Linux and i would probably loose to a banana trying to figure out how to write something correct in the terminal. The only code i have written is the pin code to my phone.
    So I created 2 live USB's. One with Mint 20 and the other with MX 19.2 and started to play with my old laptops to see if i could give them some CPR and and maybe learn something about Linux on the way. My old HP from 2005 with an Intel Celeron (32 bit) is giving signs of life with MX.

    Excellent Videos!!! You are my go to, when installing any Distro....

  • @Scootphoria
    @Scootphoria 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yep, double click, task bar on bottom, darker theme, etc. I always make my task bar with invisible background so I only see the wallpaper and icons.
    The one problem I've had is when I left the system and the screen saver activated, Thunar would not work again after I restarted the desktop. I'm not sure if it was because of hybernation or the screensaver. Had to use task manager to kill Thunar process then it worked again. I disabled the settings in Power Manager and just set it to blank the screen and no more problem (my system?).
    Another issue is if you come from another distro, several of your .config files will not work (Thunderbird for example) because MX Linux uses older versions. Took me longer to reconfigure
    Thunderbird than it did to install the system due to many accounts and reauthorizing.
    Boot was about the same as Mint and Manjaro on my system (YMMV).
    And WoW at the MX team for making so many GUI interfaces for settings that require CLI on other systems.
    One issue about the settings is that you can't use the GUI to change disk ownership in XFCE disk manager like you can in other desktops. If you format and external drive to ext4, you gotta use the CLI to change permissions so you can write to it. Or use root on Thunar as another option if you want to stay with GUI.
    I always used Grsync for backups before and now I'm loving the flexibility of the GUI of Luckybackup. Short learning curve for the submenus as they don't really stand out.
    The forum is super friendly like the Manjaro forum, but most things are in the manual, FAQs, the devs YT channel, and simple GUI apps they created so you don't need much help.
    Good review and editing. Thank you.

    Thank you for this insight
    I had to think about the criticism of the installer and yes, it is not perfect.
    But the one from Mint or the *Buntus is not that much better either, but compared to the one from OpenSuse they are gold.
    MX-Linux installed my bro, switched from win7 , without help, at opensuse he lost interest, too confusing. The preselection of the different file systems (btrfs+subvolumes/xfs) alone is not the ideal choice for windows users changing over to imho. And it was not really that clear.
    Besides, the xfce version of opensuse is, let me put it this way: visually rather unlovingly smeared. But it was robust like a russian t34. Before I switched to MX, I used opensuse xfce > 4 years.
    In the meantime I am an enthusiastic MX-Fluxbox fan :-}

    You didn´t mention that MX Linux 19.2 is 64bit only and is an AHS system ( Advanced Hardware Support ), that means that will runs great with modern hardware, then, you maybe don´t know that you can update almost everything in MX Linux included the Kernel. Also, you can unistall and reinstall anything you want. BTW, DistroWatch only permits one click for entries, so MX Linux really is No. 1 !!
    Maybe, after the ´ What to do after install MX Linux ´ video, you can make an investigation about who uses MX Linux professionally and what results they have. Thanks, great review, but don´t forget to investigate a little ´bit´ more. Saludos desde Costa Rica.

    Great as usual! And I look forward to your next video on what to do after install.
    I use it abt. 2 years and I never had real problems and I have always been able to solve, or better say to tweak to my preferences, any issue.
    MX linux lets you enter the linux world as a newbie and (if you want) learn a lot ... or just smoothly work with no problems. Being systemd-free is also a plus for me.
    I want to add and confirm what you said about MX community. Very helpful and very responding. Actually when I had questions I have been answered by runwithdolphin himself, which (as I understood) is the MX project manager
    I use and love XFCE, but their KDE version is the first one and is probaly to be improved on some aspects

I have it for my BACKUP now--- it's VERY FAST.. can be made to look any way you want and STILL be great--- and FULL of powerful tools that actually WORK. I have two distros out of all that I've tried that I have had ZERO issues with-- EVER-- one , my main daily driver-- is SPARKY LINUX-- Debian based, simple BLAZING fast-- as fast a that arch crap easily-- STABLE- beautiful- and easy to use-- and up to date!!! The other MX-- my faithful backup. BOTH have pretty much the same tools.. some IN the distro (in MX) an dsome on a RESCUE version of the distro (Sparky).. BOTH PERFECTION-- KDE.. No gnome trash..

    Good review. The reason there are two System Info programs, one graphical, one text - When you have a problem and make a help request at the forum, the "experts" will ask you to run the Text System Info and paste the output under your query. This will help them understand your hardware. The graphical one is the one you would use when you just want to look at it for yourself.

    Thank you ALU for extensive look at MX 19.2 and the various time slots made available for specific aspects.
    It is unfortunate that XFCE + KDE be reviewed in the same report since they are two different beasts.
    It would be like doing a review of Ubuntu Gnome, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, MATE all in one take.
    Do not think it is really fitting to do it this way, especially if you consider that MX is after all, at the top of the list with Distrowatch.
    Otherwise, MX really does deserve its place among the best.
    IMO, no other distro (XFCE+KDE) compares for elegance, stability and gracious, patient support and documentation.

      It's actually getting better. In the latest Plasma it is only little slow to open, but it's stable and reasonably fast to install apps and updates.

      It's called Plasma, not KDE. It is a well known fact.

    I'm only 2 minutes in and already your saying things that are not true. The glaring one being that xfce 4.14 has been around for many years. IT HAS NOT. Why are you making a video about something you clearly know nothing about? Also, you could not be any more behind with this video, MX has been number one on Distrowatch for a long time, it's nothing new like you made it out to be. Try to keep up, learn about something BEFORE you make a video.

      XFCE is not updated as fast as other distros. That's why it felt like it's been several years since it's release. It's only one year old, you are right.
