Bro, you are one of the most intelligent people out there explaining plugins and just mixing.. Wow man.. Thank you so much for another amazing tutorial..
Upwards compression is not the same as expansion. I cover this at the end of the video but I will likely make a further video to clear this topic up. It’s clear that many have been taught expansion and compression wrong, as they are almost the opposite of each other. Remember that this can be used on vocals, drums, synths etc. Try it out and hear the results! Thanks for watching :)
Would it be good to consider Waves' f6 dynamic eq as a sort of multiband compression? To be honest, especially with its decent sale price and overall ease of use, it's become one of my favorite plugins to use for multiple purposes including mid-side eq-ing
Before this video, I only knew that OTT is only about playing with the depth knob. But now, I got the full information to do further experiments with other knobs along with the depth knob. Thank You for this tip 👍🏻
Without knowing what I was doing, I used upward compression in a live church setting today. Lesson learned in the mix: it was easier to balance vocals to music tracks, but I had to watch out for gain jumps thanks to the higher sensitivity to feedback in the room. Thanks for helping me to understand why it worked AND why it’s a tricky beast in a live enclosed setting.
I watched this video as part of a playlist I made of videos from this channel that are all about audio engineering, or rather, a mix of videos from In The Mix about Mixing... it's my "In The Mix mix mix!"
Showing it with the negative ratio inside the compressor really was the key to understand how it works🙌You have a great talent to explain things, thanks for teaching 🙏
I’ve also heard it described as low-level compression and I’ve had good luck with it on synth lines. I used Waves MV2 for this and I know Waves has been contentious over the years, I think this is a plug-in that is solid in concept and layout. It does exactly what it does and nothing more.
Thank you for this! Found this video at the perfect time. Was mastering and one song called for exactly this and i found my ozone compressor had this feature. Worked like a charm!
I actually used this technique in the past. I love that I'm not the only one doing it. Just a quick piece of advice for a lot of people. I'm not saying Nova is the all in one tool but if you need to practice compressing, use Nova and see how your audio is being treated with it's RTA capabilities
It's pretty amazing how every single one of your videos teaches me something new and extremely useful that I didn't know. Clicking one of your videos is a 100% guarantee to become a little smarter
Me too! I think because they are simple and effect they don’t get mentioned very often. There is no real secret or special technique to apply and they usually sound great with little skill!
This is the first video I've watched while wearing my studio headphones. I can actually hear what you're talking about now! Another great video, keep it up.

Nicely explained thank you. This is the first video of yours I've watched and I have to say I was immediately drawn in by your presentation and the general sound quality, the latter is kind of important if you're teaching audio production
Thank you very much Michael! You are right that this is a uncharted territory, not known so much. I admit that I have started to use recently and benefit from all these. Thank you again!
You are one of my top teachers. Thank you. Please keep updating us......Ooo...by the way, I really like the beat!! Maybe I'll use it... hahahaha.... Thanks again!!!
My understanding of the DC1A3 is that the Negative button introduces a negative compression ratio. This is used for pumping effects but it's not upwards compression. A similar feature is found on Elysia's mpressor. There are actually very few compressors that allow upwards compression - the Flux compressors are one example but they call it "DeExpansion".
These are essentially the two main features of Boost by UrsaDSP. The focus control on that is an upwards limiter and the emphasis control is a transient processor / enhancer. Using a proper lookahead upward limiter and transient processor is a great alternative to traditional downward limiters if you want to control the volume and the character separately.
You can do upward compression with fruity limiter too. Just turn the ratio and knee knob (mainly ratio) to the left hand side and adjust the threshold knob. Cheerio!
Amazing tutotial, thing is that OTT changes the phase specially on Drums, that's why need to be careful with compressor on Drums cuz they usually changes the phase. rest of tutorial great.
I love your videos so much....😍😍actually I'm nothing without you...I'm just a beginner and learned in pro just from you to how to make music just like a music production. Without you I will be dead....can I expect getting a heart from you🤗🥺Pls..
I like to use parallel compression on my percussion as a way to do upward compression. Put heavy downward compression on one channel with a super high ratio and no compression on the other channel (ok technically you still put a compression plugin on it so the latency matches between channels but just leave the threshold at 0 dB so nothing gets compressed) and then mix the volume levels to find the best sound.
Great vid as always.. i use tdr nova in mastering when i feel the kick not punchy after compression the whole mix i just make a side chain and push the low end up with this technique i thought im the only one doing this
hey, I think that you use Neutron compressor as an upward expander and not as an upward compressor... btw, the basic use of an upward expander is to increase dynamic above threshold (invert of a classic downward compressor). But upward compressor makes everything BELOW the threshold become louder. So the quieter parts are levelled up with an upward comp. It could be used to raise the ambience. Or with a range set, only raise the quiet syllables of a vocal, but not the back ground noise...
9:00 > It's a really sensitive plugin... Could that be because it is meant for -18 db ? . > Renaissance compressor by waves is insane when it comes to upward compression. > There is a free VST version too > Bakuage BasicComp VST. It kinda works like a sustainer. Great on Guitars (think AndySummers) and drumloops. Haven't tried it on full mixes, though Renaissance compressor even works on mixes :-) . Cool topic. thumbs up.
Hey Michael, I love your videos but I think you are wrong on this one. When you use compressor with a ratio lower than 1, you are doing the opposite of compression, which you could call "expansion": you basically increase the dynamic range of your tracks and make the loudest parts even louder. It doesn't make the quietest parts louder. That seems logical when you know how a compressor works. A compressor divides the loudness above the threshold by the ratio you define. So, if, for instance, you set the ratio at -6 dB, and your track is a -3dB at some point, if you compress with a ratio of 1/2=0.5, you are dividing by 0.5, i.e. doubling the loudness above -6dB, so that it becomes -6 + 2*3 = 0 dB. This is what you are doing with Neutron Compressor, and we can hear the kicks getting even punchier.
This might help: www.izotope.com/en/learn/4-tips-for-using-upwards-compression-in-neutron.html This is upwards compression as I am still reducing the dynamic range. The reason the kicks get punchier is that the gain is being added during the quiet parts and then when a kick hits, it is getting that gain applied before the attack can react and bring the gain down again. I could try a much faster attack time to remedy this. Do not worry, this is certainly compression and not expansion as I showed at the end of the video. I included that clip because I wanted to make sure no one was mistaken but I should have put it earlier in the video!
@@inthemix Ok, my bad then :) but this is specific to Neutron. Some compressors (such as the Fruity Limiter) apply expansion when used with a ratio lower than 1. Thank your for the clarification!
@@faceb3076 yes haha ive seen that a lot of places companies use different terms and ratio to do things In fl studios compressors negative does expansion In dc1a ducking In neutron upward compression Bit confusing ngl
