This dude is a godsend! No weird tips, no "this is the one secret you need", just straight up, objective, easy explanation of essential mixing methods!
Man, night and day difference with the mult-band vs. the regular compressor. I'm definitely going to start reaching for the multi-band more often. Thanks for this video!
@@inthemix Funny, I actually re-watched your Dynamic EQ video for the second time after watching this video even before you replied. So yeah, I'm realizing both Dynamic EQ and Multi-band Compression are two tools I have been under utilizing. Thanks!
i literally just watched the vocal compression video and wanted to see if there is any mb comp tutorials and you upload it minutes later man im shocked 😂
Multiband Compression is one of the audio editing techniques I rely on most and seeing another engineer use it helps give me greater insight to use going forward. Thanks for the great content 👍🔥😁
I keep running into your videos... It's not just the knowledge or the fact that you use the same DAW...But you're laid back and there's no waste of time showing off, but still a passion about what you're doing. Definitely one of the best music making channels on TH-cam. Clean, clear info too!
You’re one of my favorite TH-camrs about music production, your explanations are very clear, your tips are so useful, and your voice and gestures transmit very good vibes!
Another great tutorial vid. The best take-away for me was the difference between using an EQ and a Compressor, don't know why I hadn't thought of it before !
all those people, all those tutorial talk of this as if it is self evident and only your tutorials show in detail what all those things are for in the end. thank you.
I recently used multiband compression successfully for the first time after watching your videos. I had a frustrating buildup where the sub bass coming in was making everything else sound a little quieter because I was using regular compression on the instrument bus. Using multiband fixed it! Thank you :)
thanks for the great demo .you can also fix one-offs like those cello bumps by creating a strong EQ / compression fix and only activating it for the quick passage with automation. If you have enough recorderd material it can also be possible to crossfade parts of other clean notes into the bad one to replace it in the mix. Surgical edits are usually challenging but kind of fun when you find a solution and no one will know
such a good tip. I am starting to mix my first record, and I am going through all your videos and applying them. Then mixing and remixing each song using the new tricks. This is hugely helping my skill
Oh, nice, that demonstration at 9:00 made it really easy to hear and hearing it is the most difficult and most important part. Thanks for a great tutorial, and special thanks for hearing aids :)
I think I'm going to start writting down on a booknote most of the things you teach us, because each video is literraly a gold mine. I love the way you debunk each subject and make it understandable to others DAWs users. Thanks to you my music gets better a little bit each day !
Just wanted to leave a comment, first video of yours I've seen. I really appreciate your thoughtful explanations and careful pacing, I feel like I'm in good hands learning from you.
The vocal example where you described a singer moving back & forth really struck a chord with me. One of my band mates, who continued to record with me after the band broke up, sometimes rocked back & forth when he sang. He did that when he sand sitting on the floor. I told him there's no way to fix the volume changes in the vocals. This was before I started using a DAW. I was using an external multi-channel recorder. Compressors are amazing for this reason, as well as isolating things in a DAW & doing volume changes that way.
Love your tutorials, bruh. Very detailed and clean cut. A suggestion (or request) is to use a different genre/style. Specifically if I was to ask, Modern Hip-Hop like: Young Thug, Uzi, Gunna, etc. Not sure if you’re into those styles or artists, but if you’re lookin’ to gain more traction to this channel, I 100% guarantee that will do the tricc. I say this with confidence bc like I said, love your tutorials, but they just don’t work for my style because I don’t use the same style of music (which obviously requires different mixing approach). Thanks for the dope content though!
I would say that it's because he is not doing those type of videos that he has the number of subs that he has. Just my opinion, could be wrong. But I might be able to help you out with what you're looking for.
tbh, in your first example, your first choice shouldn't be either eq or any compression. Especially with the way you described how much you like the sound and performance already. And I would agree...it already sounds great. Instead, volume automation is the cleanest, most natural choice. Maybe if these plucks were occurring all throughout the mix and was feeling lazy, then I would go back to considering compression, which can be though of as automatic volume automation. When you were describing the vocal, is the best example of that exact situation. But even then, for vocals, I recommend manual volume automation first before reaching for compression for a cleaner, more natural sounding performance. That being said, I do feel your final example is exactly the situation where multiband compression makes more sense because plucky guitars in general sound great through multiband compression without volume automation because of the nature of the sound (plucky). It's easier to tame plucks from strumming while keeping a natural sound with compression vs. sustained sounds like cellos, vocals, etc. I'm happy you mentioned dynamic EQ as well, it's absolutely a great option (I prefer it to multiband compression in most cases). I actually went over that myself in terms of sidechaining in FL yesterday.
I just want to say that I’ve seen a lot of videos on mixing and mastering and yours are simply one of the best! Have you considered doing full blown courses? I’d definitely sign up and pay for one!
Good tips. I've not tried multiband compression yet. I'm using the F6-RTA on specific frequencies on individual sections (1st/2nd vlns, violas, cellos, double bass) as there are certain notes that are just louder and more resonant and overpowering than others. I also like the API-2500 compressor on strings because it has HPF/LPF and L/R link controls.
I'm thinking of using this on my mixes as well as on some channels in either Studio One or FLS. I didn't know you used S1 as well. Great video as always Mike!!!
Greetings from Sri Lanka! I watched almost all of your FL studio tutorials bro. Those helped me hugely in my productions and as I moved to Studio One very recently, I'd like to see specially your tutorials on Studio One as well. Because your teaching methods are super clear and on point. Keep up the good work brother. All the best!
great content bro. There's so much on youtube, it's hard to decipher what's legit. Off rip getting many ideas, this is definitely gonna improve my mixes. I loved the compression one too.
Ahhh here I was just trying to learn some techniques for my pragmatic side, but the big chord just after 0:54 very unexpectedly nearly put me to tears. Eeeeesh.
Please make a video talking about 440hz vs 432hz and how to achieve them. I seen a few videos but some contradic the others, I trusted your ears and knowledge. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

If you want even more control, I'd reach for a Dynamic EQ too. They let you really dive into and the interface is more familiar to most of us :)
@@inthemix Funny, I actually re-watched your Dynamic EQ video for the second time after watching this video even before you replied. So yeah, I'm realizing both Dynamic EQ and Multi-band Compression are two tools I have been under utilizing. Thanks!

This is a really good example as opposed to a vocal that ends up sounding annoying after the 30th time it gets played.
Another great tutorial vid. The best take-away for me was the difference between using an EQ and a Compressor, don't know why I hadn't thought of it before !
Multiband compressors and dynamic EQs are fantastic when it comes to solve certain problems, like the one you just shown here and deessing.
i got a school shooting ad at the start, very related to multiband compression
i got a mobile shooter pvp game
@@Kinzuu that's related to multiband compression for sure
They got you on their sight pal D:
Ofc, If you compress just one band you get school shooters
What kind of ad is that???

It's worth mentioning that dynamic EQ can solve the same issues, and it sometimes does it more gently.

Definitely worth thinking about / testing a dynamic eq for this sort of surgical treatment though - tend to be a less colourful than compressors.
