  • There are many ways to prepare fresh largemouth bass for the dinner table, and this video shows how to fillet them. The fillets are excellent for baking, frying, or grilling. This technique can also apply to a wide variety of freshwater fish such as walleye, perch, smallmouth bass, trout, and striped bass, as well as saltwater fish such as sea trout and red drum. For filleting panfish such as bluegill, bream, crappie and sunfish see our other video: (Check out our video on how to fillet bluegill-- • How to Scale and Fille... )

Best video I've seen, you actually explain what you are doing, and why, without assuming your viewers have been doing this for years. Good job on the video.

Good video - you make it look too easy.
It's harder to filet a smaller bass - but that's what makes this a good tutorial.

Added this video to my beginners fishing video playlist. You didn't destroy the the fish and it was very instructive. I myself enjoy bass and I use to descale and gut but this is much better. I guess you can use the remains as bait or soup. Thank you.

Never seen one filleted quite like that, but whatever works. But you're wasting a lot of meat on the fish. Head meat, internal meat, and even the cut with the intramuscular bones. If you like fish patties, that cut is perfect. Put a few of those through a meat grinder, and those little bones turn into such fine pieces that you can't even tell they're in the meat. Many fish patties even have the rib bones left in, when the fish is small enough. Anyway, you threw away enough meat to make a very good fish broth, or the beginning of a pot of fish stew, or fish soup.

Can you suggest some videos that show some of the things you describe? I'm especially interested in the fish broth/soup/stew ideas.

Ever hear of a slot lake? Many lakes have size limits within a range. A Lake is set where you can keep bass from 8" - 15" and under and over go back.
Me? I keep the last legal fish of the day for dinner. S'all I need. One.

I would aleays gut a fish befire fillet, and bleed it out.
It keeps the meat uncontaimnated and clean, resulting in a better taste.
Also scale before anything as scales on any fish carry bacteria 👍🏼

Excuse please, but there is no such word as - as you pronounce it - fill-aa. The word is 'fillet' pronounced 'fill-it'. Like millions of others, you have been McDonald-ized.
Back in the 1960's, McDonalds came out with the Fillet of Fish, a marketing gimmick to relate fish to 'fillet (fill-aa) mignon'. But that is the French name a cut of beef. In English, we use a fill-it-ing knife to 'fill-it a fish', and what you get is a fish 'fill-it'.
