I literally started cackling with glee and scare/woke up my cat
At the first scene we are seeing from his perspective: “he is a really rich and powerful man that even has an airplane with his name on it and a girl fanning him”
In the next scene we see the reality: “he’s not even in a beach, he’s in a random playground pretending he’s that rich guy”
It really goes well with the lyrics of the song since he’s actually mocking the lifestyle of the people who live in Gangnam (the richest part of Seoul)

Fun fact: PSY picked Hyuna to be in this MV himself, there's even a version of the song with Hyuna singing in it (Oppa is just my style)
Flash forward to 2020 and PSY now owns his own entertainment company (P-Nation) and Hyuna is now one of the artists under said company. They go way back and still work together to this day.

Fun fact: the guy in yellow suit having dance battle is actually Korea's national top tv host, Yoo Jaesuk. He's famous for having zero anti club, once there used to be an article about an anti club showing up online, causing everyone's confusion. They dug it up and found out the organiser of the club was actually a fan who did it for fun because "no one has done it so i do it to be the first". He's also known globally in the famous Korean tv show, Running Man.

This video still holds up. Unlike a lot of meme trends, the song is actually good, everyone is clearly in on the joke, and PSY is charismatic and just a great performer. That's why, away from the hype, parodies, and reactions, the MV and song still bop years after most memes have died and been forgotten.
Sometimes we all just need to rewatch Gangnam style and understand, who we are as a humanity

The first shot with his glasses could represent the confidence he is feeling in his mind, while the camera zooms out to a relatively normal area, a park...not a lush beach with an attendant. In the whole video he is making normal things and spaces glamorous and a stage.

Fun facts:
Psy is known for sweating a lot when performing, and his way of dealing with it is simply to just wear sleeveless shirts - he's pretty famous for it in Korea as well :)
The other guys in the video, Yellow Suit guy and Elevator guy, are Yoo Jae Suk and No Hong Chul, South Korean comedians. The dance in the elevator was No Hong Chul's "signature dance" at the time if I remember correctly.
At the time they were regulars on a show called Mu Han Do Jeon (Infinity Challenge in English), and I think they had a/some episodes about filming this MV as well.
ohhh, so that's why. i noticed he wears a lot more sleeves after Gentleman though. why does he sweat so much lol... i have seen him mop his whole face under stage lights so much lol, and he's like always dancing even on variety shows

Not exactly. The servers had no trouble serving the video. But the part of the software that _displays_ the play count didn’t use the right kind of variable, so after reaching the limit of positive numbers for that variable type, it rolled around and started showing negative numbers. There had never been a video with that many plays before!

Gangnam Style is a satirical song about the lifestyle of Crazy Rich Korean. Gangnam is a district in Seoul with luxury shop everywhere. on the opening scene, Psy is having ‘a luxury tropical by the beach holiday in a public park’. That’s why the girl is no longer there on the wide shots.
I wish we could go back to the years when gangnam style mv came out. Everything was more beautiful

This video awaked the long buried feeling of cringing I felt when this first came out. I thought I buried it so deep I would never find it again.
The opening image in his glasses is showing what he is imagining and when you pull out you see he's not this extravagant person on a beach getting fanned but in a neighborhood playground. The whole song is about how people think of themselves vs reality. I think it was an excellent establishing shot storywise.
We all liked kpop at some point. We were just to oblivious to realize it.

Love this. I was already in the Kpop black hole before this song, but it still makes me laugh!! FYI it’s pronounced H-YU-NA. The yu part sounds more like the Yu from Yummy rather than a Hi sound.
