  • The Right Opinion - A Critique Of Shane Dawson | TRO (Inside The Mind of Jake Paul)
I had a few topics to pick out of the hat, but I found such a fascinating one today that I couldn’t possibly ignore it, and it’s obviously in part about the titular character, Mr. Shane Dawson here. Shane Dawson, like a lot of people we talk about on this channel, is a TH-camr, I’m sure many of you are already aware of this, but if you’ve somehow just discovered the platform, and you’ve had the pleasure of having this beautiful accent introduce you. That’s what he is, a TH-camr, but he’s not any old TH-camr, he’s not any geek off the street, he is one of the first TH-camrs to gain prominence on the platform.
This was mainly through his channel Shane Dawson TV, the TV there, clearly making it sound nice and professional, he uploaded these comedy sketch style videos, an iconic classic being “Fred”, in which Shane Dawson appropriately deals with Fred so he can establish himself as the most popular TH-camr on the platform, which, you know, I’m not complaining about. Anyhow, that was in a simpler time, and as a creator it is a necessity that you evolve with the times, so as charming as these sketches and short films were, it appears they were brought to an end on that channel at the close of 2016.
What took its place though? Well, his third channel, Shane, yep, he had three channels, busy bloke he is, for all we know he might have more. Now Shane, was originally set up as a vlog channel, in the day it was almost like a backup for him letting his followers know what’s up, and what’s going down, with little jokes and memes, nonetheless, still with some pretty saucy clickbait, there was no throwaway thumbnail to Shane it seems. Anyhow, in case you haven’t noticed, with the increasing accessibility to high quality equipment, vlogging has emerged in the last few years as a huge genre, along with this, other genres that have crept into the public eye are mystery genres, list genres, and commentary.
Therefore, Shane did what any person with a level head did, and made his “Shane” channel dedicated to morphing all of those genres together, which is pretty genius to be honest. Although, as a creator Shane was definitely aware of the consequences of mixing a range of genres that are too diverse from each other, and something that his accomplice Bobby Burns would soon find out, and so he tended to mesh them in a very similar style that would bring back the same audience for each video, allowing organic views to turn into suggested views, and this would grow out some great content that had mass appeal to multitudes of audiences, dedicated and casual.
I assume he chose this channel because it probably had the best potential fanbase, and as said, if you tried to mix these videos with already established content in a rather distinctly incompatible style the algorithms loathe it, and so I assume this was a smart move. On top of this, he would include some more personal videos, that would branch out his character, and the relationship that he had with his audience, in a way he was building an empire. The Shane brand not just being an interesting expansion of content for him, but also branching out on the elements of his character, dissecting his childhood, relationships, and asking a lot of questions, with no clear answers. It’s emotionally riveting stuff, it really is.
I feel therefore it was an appropriate succession to continue into these documentary style videos, that deal with many of the components that Shane had dealt with in the past, just in a more bombastic fashion, and under the guise of an individual problem, or person, which is then branched out to implicitly deal with other questions. That’s typically what any video that’s not just a basic reaction will do, but obviously there are tiers to this, and Dawson clearly wanted to do top tier.
Now I recently covered the tea spilling saga, of which one of the people I covered was Jeffree Star, Jeffree Star has always been in the public eye, in fact he’s a very prominent individual clearly, however, given the sort of brewing tea in that community, it made sense that Shane would be interested in covering such controversial figures. However, in my video I note that this whole beauty community kinda dominated the summer and pushed other figures like the Pauls into the background, even though, they were arguably behaving much worse than any of the beauty commentators in question. So when Shane announced his next set of videos were going to be on Jake Paul some people were a tad surprised, here is this topic that was, in a way, kinda dead and buried, and if Shane was gonna pull his shovel out he was gonna have to dig deep to find some interesting content.

As someone who has watched Shane since I was 11(I am 19 now) and am a fan, I can say that this documentary was shit, and he should have stopped after the third one. I wasn't feeling his last conspiracy documentary since he kept inserting Brittany's extremely dangerous situation which should have been it's own video and juxtaposing it with Chuck E Cheese. Jeffree claimed that Shane told him James was saying things about him, and I wouldn't be surprised if Shane did all this for his own documentary which will be on the beauty community and makeup process. He doesn't seem as happy as when he was just having fun with his friends.

I feel like the subjects of Shane's documentaries (excluding Molly Burke) have all failed to live up to the positive light that he shed on them:
-Bobby became a douchey, generic LA vlogger.
-Bunny went back to making boring, repetitive content.
-Tana got off scot free from the Tanacon debacle.
-Jeffree "called out" James Charles as a sexual predator with zero evidence.
-Jake promoted gambling to kids and drove around blindfolded.

I think that’s the point. The only reason why these controversial figures would let Shane do a “documentary” on them is to water down their controversies and make it seem like they’ve “changed.”
And then when anyone tries to bring up past criticisms they’ve done, their fans can just point to the documentaries as a way to show they’ve addressed it. Shane Dawson gets views, the other party gets a pass on anything bad they’ve done, even if it’s genuinely a crime. (Tana with false advertising, Jeffree Star with slander/defamation, etc)

Nerd city hit on on the head with "asking if Jake Paul is a sociopath gives him a really low bar to clear"
Jake Paul is not a sociopath, but he is a greedy self centered con artist who does not deserve a 'redemption arc' and Shane basically acted as a free publicist.

He wanted to be Jake's PR team, just like in the Tana situation, and that's incredibly shady and dishonest. Both people should be scrutinized and shouldn't have YT channels to begin with since they both violate YT guidelines. Did you know Tana also vlogged a dead body? It was a well-calculated PR move for Jake and a chance for Shane to make a lot of views and $ while still cultivating his "naive innocent" persona for his naive fans. He was indeed trying to make Jake look like a victim, Jake wouldn't have accepted to participate in a series whose goal is to demonize him. People think he is an idiot but he is actually a very smart entrepreneur. Shane chose to end on Jake's version of the stories even though he talked to Alissa after talking to Jake because ending with Alissa could have lead to us looking at Jake's sobby interview more critically. Having everyone else talk about Jake at the start and THEN Jake talk about what happens make it SEEMS like Jake is debunking the lies, like his version of the story is the one that really matters, whereas doing things the other way around would have looked like the videos where other people are talking about him are meant to debunk or make us look at him in a more sceptical way. Very deliberately framing! And as I said, those videos aren't all in chronological order so the framing is very obviously intentional.
The series wasn't about exposing the truth about Jake but exposing what Jake wants us to think about him. Shane didn't push hard on nerd city's criticism of Jake's business tactics because he saw that Jake was getting angry, that shows that this entire docu-series was meant to benefit Jake. even Nick in the 3rd episode said he's only going to talk about what Jake allows him to talk about. And the series ends with Jake walking away from the camera while sad piano music plays, 😒.
Shane made more than 6 hours of videos to restore Jake's image in exchange for millions of views. and what did Shane say in the trailer again? "he is not gonna like it when he finds out what it's really about"? yeah, right! Jake had full control over the way he was portrayed.

Its super dangerous and concerning how Shane is currently the only creator (or even internet personality) at this point who CANT be criticized. No one would DARE say a word against him and that's something that I wish people could look into. Anyone who can't be criticized without bringing down the wrath of damn near the whole YT community is, imo, someone who needs to be investigated. I'm always very skeptical of these people who get put on a pedestal and just because he's had some big scandals doesn't mean that he's been vetted properly. Allegations rarely come from NOTHING, usually there's a hint of something to bring out an accusation, otherwise they would be easily dismissed and never take hold. That idea is seen with Jake Paul and these other problematic YTers, too. There's some biiiiig skeletons hiding in his closet and I think he's hiding them by being "open" and "honest".

@@lindab424 That's one of the worst analogies I've ever seen. Shane isn't devoid of criticism because "his fans did it". That's not how it works or any of it works. Good for him if he doesn't have that mentality, but the intent is irrelevant. When you have such a huge following, you can't do whatever you want. Want to be an asshole? Everyone who follows you is also going to be an asshole. Do you see Pewdiepie or another big TH-camr do that? No, because they understand it and they aren't asshats.
You can't make a comment and say "It wasn't me, it was a fan." Keemstar gets shit on this all the time and rightfully so, but Shane gets a free pass? Fuck off. If people criticize him, he either takes it or he doesn't, answering those criticisms, and in a negative manner is the dumbest thing to do and it doesn't help Shane's case, at all.

@@Wyllowisp Whatever dude! At the end of the day everyone is responsible for their own actions. And you are wrong in your assumption that everyone who follows someone or is their fan is going to cross the line and copy their actions. I am a fan of Shane's but I didn't make any comments to that girl or about her on twitter or anywhere else for that matter. I firmly believe there was no ill intent on Shane's part. My understanding of the whole debacle was that Shane responded to the girls comment because she was worried about his health. What 'some' of his fans choose to do after he responded to the girl was their choice, not Shane's. If they choose to bully the girl with nasty comments then that is on them, they made the decision to do so. If they can't distinguish right from wrong you can't blame anyone else for it. I appreciate your neutrality, but let's call it like it is.
Shane never gave a shit about making these people accountable for their actions. He wanted to ride the controversy waves to make money. He gave all these people an easy out, and did his best to pull away from the impact of these terrible people.
He's selfish. And he's greedy. He had a perfect position to shine real light on these things and genuinely make these people face their actions and have to justify things, not just to themselves, but their fans and Shane himself. Did he do that? No. He cashed in on the drama to get ahead.
Jake Paul is a blatantly abusive and dangerous person. Jeffree Starr made gross accusations against James Charles with no evidence. Tanna fleeced her fans for large sums of money, then delivered none of the things she promised. But in Shane's eyes, they're exonerated because they looked sad for a video.
These people put on a face for a living. None of the people in these documentaries are their real selves when the camera rolls. Shane got to see them at their most natural, but did nothing with it. He's a coward and deserves no platform, because all he does is excuse this behavior instead of making them confront it.

Shane's series made Erika seem like the angel who tamed Jake. I could see Erika was basking in that and Jake played along but was always that same dirty dog. As for those people who say that Alissa and Jake weren't really dating, well there were some pretty dang hurt feelings for 2 people that never dated. Regardless of what either Jake or Alissa say...Jake wouldn't have been so devastated that Logan slept with his girl...if she wasn't his girl. Flip it around. Alissa knew the best way to hurt Jake was to sleep with Logan. There were very very deep feelings there, regardless of what either of them say. That hurt Jake to his core (still does, I know he was in love with her) and he deserved it. With time and experience you guys will see how sick the Alissa/Jake dynamic was. She loved him so much it hurt. He played the nice guy then pushed her away...funny enough, this was all done by Jake to keep her weak and HIS regardless what he did. Erika though? Shes a skeezy no talent bitch. It will be interesting to see what her "career" does now. I mean, have you heard her music? 😟🤯🤢🤮💩💩💩💩💩💩💩🙉 Sidenote: Alissa is a natural. It’s beyond the point where Shane can plead ignorance, with power should come responsibly. Mental health is finally in the public eye for good or for bad at very least it strikes conversation. Grossly misdefining a condition when you have a large following is the problem because others may take that at face value. With such a large following the amount of influence he has over his audience shouldn’t be taken lightly. When the DSM5 website clearly outlines sociopathy without emotional bias, being one computer search away, it could have set him up with a base understanding enough so the very definition wasn’t botched nor tainted (by separating facts and feelings). Feeding the stigma is sending us all backwards as this is what caused the ongoing mistreatment, you are no longer a person you are a problem. I personally am physically incapable of taking Shane seriously. I don't know. I've heard Americans tend to overreact to things but with him, it's so cartoony! "OMg Jeffree is rich, even though I already knew he was I didn't know he was rich. OMg, He has a big business? even though it was already public knowledge and I even mentioned it earlier it so shocking to see a warehouse full of boxes! OMG! he even breathes!!!". So fucking ridiculous. I also despise that in both docu-series about Jeffree and Jake he spent so much time just showing people's houses around. I think he manipulates his audience a lot. All the "OMG i am shaking, he actually drinks water" moments are here to make the audience feel the same, all the fascination for their "crazy rich people lives" are here to put the person he is talking about on a pedestal and impress the audience. It's all, very obvious framing.
That's why I can't take him seriously, he sounds very fake to me. I don't know him personally but it's difficult to picture someone actually acting like this all the time. TH-camrs have personas, even the ones who pretend to be "true" have personas and some unconsciously let their persona influence their real self. Maybe that's what is happening with Shane.
Also, this whole docu-series about Jake was just a PR move, all the parties involved did it for money. Jake wanted to restore his image so he accepted to participate in a series that literally portrayed him as a victim, especially a victim of his family so that he can distance himself from his brother's fascination for dead bodies. Shane was in it for the money, that's why he never tried to really challenge Jake. The second Jake started to get angry about the questions about his business, Shane literally stopped filming! Maybe he is also a nice person, who does sympathize with people very easily, but I also have the feeling that somewhere in his mind all his moves are calculated for money. He may not even admit it to himself because his persona merged with his real self or something, but the the nice, genuine, kinda dumb and naive guy he is in his video is a facade. I am kinda 75 % sure he is. But I am just a dumb emoji on the internet, not a psychologist 😝

    • @ambieee
      @ambieee 5 ปีที่แล้ว +49

I think it could be a possibility however I think it's more of Shane seeing this as a chance to appeal to the newer, more current TH-camrs' audience like Jake's and Tana. I understand he has his own dedicated fanbase and he's been on this platform for the longest, but the way I see it is sort of like how you get a chance to sit at the "cool kids'" table and you use that chance to get in on their good sides so you're liked more buy everyone else.
It could be a mix of both but the possibility you brought up somehow makes me sadder to think Shane would take the money defending a bully like Jake than doing the opposite and not spit in the face of his fans.

Shane's clear priority of having everyone like him is why he cannot be a legitimate 'reporter' or ever present a valid expose. The whole point of reporting on a person or character is using facts and being impartial, and above all to never let yourself be swayed by the person you claim to be investigating. But Shane wants to be liked, both by the subject and audience. This seems to give him a powerful fear of confrontation that lethally undermines any journalistic integrity he might have. So instead of addressing real issues, or calling people out on the very real shit they've done/are doing, he plays nice to make everything bright and flowery in an attempt to make everyone get along. That kind of attempt to downplay the real story and cover everything in a neat blanket will always hold his content back from being worthwhile or 'real', and at its worst is damaging and makes Shane himself an enabler of the subjects' behaviour.
And that's not to speak of the glaring issues of an interviewer using the behaviours of their subjects as a way of self-diagnosing. That should be an enormous red flag, covered in red alarms, flown behind a red 747.

IMO the “therapist” Shane interviewed in the beginning ruined the narrative. Sociopaths/psychopaths (they’re both colloquial words used to refer to people with ASPD) are just as varied and individual as empaths (non-sociopathic/“”normal”” people). The only differences are that sociopaths don’t feel empathy, remorse, or compassion. There are certain archetypes within that diagnosis that are common, such as the charismatic sociopath or the flat, emotionless psychopath, but there are differences between every person who fits the diagnosis, because they’re people. The “therapist” in this doc made it seem like sociopaths are cartoonish monsters that are pure evil, but they’re not. They’re often quite likable and it can be incredibly difficult to tell when the compassion they display is manufactured. The “therapist” kind of led Shane to believe that if he asked a sociopath whether or not they were a sociopath, they would, I don’t know, cackle and set some puppies on fire. Many sociopaths don’t even know or don’t want to believe they are sociopaths. The whole potential danger of them is that they can blend in to society really well and people LOVE a charismatic sociopath. Shane had this imagine of a monster under the bed wearing Jake Paul’s skin so instead of conducting any analysis that would be at all worthwhile he just looked for a zipper and went home when he realized Jake is just a person when the fact that Jake is just a person is what makes him so dangerous. Not saying for sure he’s a sociopath but Shane’s doc didn’t give anyone any reason to believe he’s not, plus it fed a bunch of people serious misinformation that leaves them way more open to manipulation from an actual sociopath. Anywhere from 1/100 to 1/50 people meet the diagnostic criteria for some degree of sociopathy, depending on which studies you look at. You’ve known sociopaths. You’ve probably liked them. Shane Dawson seems to surround himself with them.

    • @lucifernazaedi
      @lucifernazaedi 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Just because a few people may meet up to some symptoms, does not mean that they are diagnosed with it. It’s actually incredibly rare. Just like empaths (if that’s what you want to call them) are incredibly rare.

    @eko1289 5 ปีที่แล้ว +49

while there are other things to critique on the series, my biggest issue was Shane's lack of knowledge on sociopaths/people with anti-social personality disorder. Like, cool he got a therapist to help him out to make it seem more "legit" and help explain/learn about it - but as she said in one of the videos, it's not her area of expertise and while it may have been hard to, he should have found someone who was an expert (or just not go down that route at all seeing that he barely even sticked to it).

I didn't actually have a lot of huge problems with the series itself, beside the ending episodes where he's quite obviously overly defending him and handing him answers and going super easy on him. I didn't rly have an issue with the drama or sociopath angle. My biggest problem is the way he responded to criticisms from people, egging his fans to continue attacking people he cursed out after deleting his own comments toward them. Liking the comments of people saying the person his fans are attacking "deserved it." He's been around long enough to know that gives his fanbase more fuel to do those things. And he should know better than to respond to random mild criticisms telling people to "Fuck off." and stuff. Not to mention he outright just showed his bias on twitter saying Jake is "like family" to him. It shows he doesn't want people to take any negative opinion from his series and exactly how he wants people to respond to it, and any other criticism doesn't fit the narrative. He knows the power he has over his fans, he knows how the internet works and that not everyone will like everything he does and that's no excuse to respond to mild and non-attacking criticisms that aren't being harmful to him by attacking the person and then encouraging his fans to do it in his stead once he deletes his replies. It also shows that no one is allowed to have criticisms because he feels Jake is his family which is kinda super fucked.
The series was fine as entertainment, I didn't expect anything ground-breaking (despite him marketing it that way) though I feel editing the parts in real time made it a bit of a mess. I understand being overly empathetic because i'm the same way and I did feel bad for Jake in some parts for his family life and such. But glossing over the actual negative things he's done and using that as an excuse isn't okay, and then attacking people who criticise you in reasonable ways isn't okay. I can sympathise with having a moment of weakness and repsonding to a comment, but to continue liking comments attacking the person isn't okay. And I can tell he put a lot of time and love into the series and I know seeing criticisms must hurt, but after doing this for so long he will drive himself into the ground if he still can't compartmentalise and take the constructive criticisms and see if they apply and leave the shitty ones on the side of the road because that's not healthy. Criticisms if the price of fame, unfortunately. I still like Shane and am not gonna stop watching all of his content but this series and the aftermath were just kind of a mess.

I agree with you on most of these things. As someone who isn't a fan of his to begin with (simply not my type of content)I found the series as an entertaining show filled with funny funnies. I've never thought of it as anything special until I actually saw how he advertised it, it was completely different to what I saw while watching the series. Like most of the vloggers that I've seen, I couldn't care any less about what was to happen to them after they do something quite controversial. I usually just chalk it up to clickbait and people one upping each other.
TL:DR : I don't care. They're all probably just building a business using what they know will get views simply from the controversy, hell the editing in the first few episodes along with the goofs was enough to hook me in.

I think doing the documentary when Shane Dawson started defending Jake Paul. He has been compromised in terms of what he was supposed to be doing it came to the documentary.

Also you know if a documentary objective is to prove the person is a sociopaths it's a pretty low bar in my opinion to not hit.

Shane Dawson defending the Paul Brothers (for being sociopaths) is one of the many reasons why he would ve overrated as hell. At this rate, I seem to be changing my mind on whom I would love to cast as Greywood from Basebrawl, in fact, I might even cast Mat Brunet aka ElectricDragon505 as Greywood i stead of Shane Daeson if Shane Dawson is actually rudely desperate in real life.

To be honest i prefered shane as the guy who did funny videos but i feel like he lost his funny bone, thank goodness brandon rogers has taken that torch because he does what shane could've taken his comedy to.

Just want to clarify sociopathy and psychopathy arent inherently evil in nature, some sure do like opening up and eating other people or having intercourse with their severed heads but there is also another tale to the story. Those who "suffer". Such as not feeling empathy, making it hard to connect to people who emotionally hurt others by accident, sociopaths are people too and they too operate on some basis. Just like how not every muslim is a boomber, not every sociopath is insane or a kller

I think the biggest mistake is Shane believing that his thing is being serious.
Is not. His thing is humor, and laughing about dark stuff.
I love all the stupid things he does, all of those overreactions, because it makes me laugh even if my day has been bad as hell.
    He's good at that.
But not at this docuseries. He needs to be able to take criticism to do it, and he's not.
I want him to go back to the funny stuff. For his content to be mostly humor with serious stuff thrown in between instead of the opposite.

yea i liked when he would just sit in front of the camara and do something while talking about stuff and being funny. then once in awhile he would do a conspiracy video to get a lil more serious. it was better then and i miss that shane content

  • @bandedski2550

I hope you continue responding to comments, I truly do.
I think Shane thinks a bit too much of himself considering all he has done and while his production value is extremely high quality, he himself is far from that standard. Hes a bit naive, especially in the way he views conspiracy theories and the way he "studies" them and presents them to his audience, its either surface level or he steers clear of the more controversial sides to them.
Shane is the centerpiece of his channel so I guess if you dont appreciate him you cant appreciate his channel, which is my case. I do enjoy the way TRO presented Shane and I guess I respect how wholesome he is even if it might be him willingly ignoring flaws to push the "wholesome" narrative and how he wants to better himself as shown by how he handled Jake Paul.
This is my opinion and I do admit to being a bit uninformed on the subject of Shane Dawson ( a bit less now thanks to this video ).

Yeah but it's easy to pick apart content that someone has made in a day or a matter of days...can we really compare this to what we are used to on TV where people work on documentaries for months, maybe years? If anything we should be criticising the format

The way I see it, Shane might be looking for someone like himself; someone who can provide for him what he does for other people. Idk I just find that I get a spur where I'm eager to listen to other people's problems and try and offer advice or simply be there for 'em. But once that's all done, I feel hollow. I feel angry sometimes actually, like I will willingly listen to others, but nobody will listen to me- and it's not the same to just lay all your shit on someone else. Some things just can't be solved with a simple explanation as you stated, he doesn't fully understand why he still feels depressed at times and there's no point just telling someone "I feel like shit" because there's nothing they can do. Now I'm definitely just projecting, but his journey for self discovery is inspiring
