Someone is nice to others doesn't mean he is right. That's all I am going to say. Look, we all have our point of views. His game award show is be called Geoff's VGA. There is no appreciation toward the devs when some of the awards were announced. HIs show is all about the trailers. That's what attract gamers to watch the show. I’ve been gaming for 40 years. I’ve seen the crash of 84 and the resurrection through Nintendo and Sega. Gaming has become something that was very niche and not talked about. To the glutinous over saturated mess that it is today. And still it’s my favorite hobby because when you find that game you connect with it’s still a great feeling. I Want to thank You for this vid and having the balls to call out people. Bravo.

On one hand I completely agree but also the way the industry is set up it promotes this kind of behaviour. Burning a bridge with a publisher to never receive a review/early copy again could be a big problem for a reviewer that relies on delivering those early hands on previews or reviews. It's a very competitive and corrupt environment where you either keep your dignity and go broke or keep your mouth shut if you wanna make a living out of it. It all comes down to how you have it set up in life but I understand that the 1st choice is harder for some people.

Unfortunately I agree. The ‘let’s criticize the industry to make it better!’ is either a very naive outlook for a TH-camr or hoping their own audience is naive. Game-makers are not interested in criticism. They’re interested in tweaking some elements to make the game more playable but they don’t need TH-camrs for it. They get their feedback through spam if something’s not alright. The TH-camrs who report about this spam are just capitalizing on the outrage.

I think it's a double edged sword. Because Geoff DID help gaming reach a wider more mainstream audience. I mean this year's Game Awards earned a total of 85 million global livestreams. This is considerably higher than the Golden Globes, the Oscars and the Grammys COMBINED, which are considered mainstream events. But at the same time... When something becomes popular, it also becomes more likely to be the victim of corporate greed. Which is what we're seeing with micro-transactions and loot boxes in games, but also with the non stop ads and useless filler in The Game Awards. Hopefully, that same greed will encourage publishers to inject money into actual talent and games instead of lifeless cash grabs lol. I have faith that one day, The Game Awards will be great. One day.

The reality nowadays is that the term “journalist” ought to be taken as loosely as the French meant it to be. A journalist was someone who was supposed to keep account of daily events. Today we have investigators, reporters, observers, analysts, critiques, influencers and many others - all representing an aspect of journalism, all being part of the same profession.
If a “journalist” or anyone would only touch, let alone like, Doritos, Cyberpunk 2077 etc, when they were payed for it - it’s a false advertisement & ultimately- an ethical problem. But if they like it AND get payed for it, it slips into a grey zone. I’d feel too modest to claim to always know if a person displays genuine love or fakes it. In the end genuineness of intent is almost impossible to prove or disprove.

Not sure if the dig at Alanah Pearce is fair. She's been very open about the fact that she should not be considered a games journalist since she left IGN, and that was long before she got the free chair and the inclusion in Cyberpunk 2077 as a character. She openly and strongly and repeatedly said no one should consider her opinion on it fair and unbiased as a result.

Don't mention Allanah Pierce, was a big fan til she felt the need to shame me for taking a guess at one of her Instagram post that she later deleted cuz me and many others had taken her post differently then she had intended, and I wasn't hating on her or anything but the way she publicly shamed her audience/fans for being excited for her work at Sony was kinda shocking. Her and Yong Yea turned into the biggest clowns this year for me and go to show they collab frequently so 🤷🏻‍♂️

I haven't even thought about this guy for so many years, but didn't he also shill his method of shilling to the influencers at the time?
I can't give you a source for this because I just remember seeing a clip of it somewhere, but I remember this interview where he basically told everyone that the easiest way to make money and get somewhere in the industry would be to product place, to always have a bottle of mountain dew and a bag of doritos next to you when making a video, because they would then aggressively try to sign you up for partnered content if you had enough viewers.
Again, this is anecdotal because it was just one of those things I saw at the time which made me start giggling and go: "He really said that? He really just told people that all you need to do to succeed is to be a paid shill?"
This was basically when I stopped caring what any "games journalist" had to say.

I liked Geoff when he worked for spiketv gametrailers because he was entertaining, but who cares what he thinks or what a game journalist thinks about a game. Just do your own research. Ever since games have become more mainstream like Geoff wanted there has been a decline in quality for them so i guess the need for biased journalists to hide their flaws has been necessary, but thank god for independent journalism.

So if you are a youtuber you can shill all you want, but if you are Geoff Keighley you can't?
Let's ignore the fact that Keighley have always been a presenter and a host, not a "journalist". But people working for the various gaming sites out there are doing the exact same work as many of the gaming youtube channels. I fail to see why they have to be held up to a different standards. You, who's reviewing games and commenting on the gaming scene, are allowed to take money for promotional work, accept invites to fancy preview events, get gifts from left and right, and all that. But a person who is reviewing games and commenting on the gaming scene on Eurogamer is not? Because he's a journalist?
TH-camrs "saving" the gaming industry from journalist shills forking for the traditional media is the funniest joke that happened in the past decade.

(Accountability request at the end) To me it just looks like "games are more mainstream now and they have a Ryan-Seacrest type doing awards" lol (I had stopped following the industry around that time). I don't think the guy deserves much attention.
As for the 'journalist' criticism, I think we see a lot of that (lack of a formal education) in tech coverage (the 'proper' ones usually were converted into it), and also in many other relatively nascent industries like gaming.
Geoff aside, those issues shown seemed to have colored people's views on many things around him, even developers, which might be unfair perhaps.
Even with all that was mentioned in your piece... love it or not, I think the game awards do help elevate the industry in the eyes of those outside it (like mainstream talent, for instance).
    My point regarding accountabilty:
I've noticed a slight 'negativity-trend' in the way your videos have been presented I the feed (title, thumbnail and so on - I understand the content is varied and you can't control what is disliked). I know your content and critiques are fair and always explained constructively, but something has been feeling off for me recently. Don't know if this could be related to changes for algorithm optimization on your end.
Also, (imo) this specific video didn't really feel like it belonged to your channel. I say all this as someone who appreciates your work... to me the feed from a year or so ago was generally "lighter feeling", while still pointing out any bad stuff you found.
I hope this comment is helpful, and hope you expand your business staying true to the sensibilities that have gotten you this far.
One last quick point while I'm here (it's much more of a feedback than criticism) :
I cannot 'unsee' GUERILLA GAMES when looking at the channel icon. I understand it shows your initials but it's not really clear unless we really pay attention and it's honestly too close to their logo.... But with its readability suffering due to having more information crammed in. With all that said, I believe some slight adjustments over time can correct most of these issues...!

You had me interested in the beginning of the video, but then you just go on criticize people directly or by association with the video clips you throw in. It looks good and sounds convincing if you don't know any of these people or their backgrounds, but I don't think you've done your research.
Look, I appreciate your game critiques, because they are generally interesting and well-crafted essays. I don't agree with them all the time, but I appreciate your perspective and your ability to articulate it to the listener. However; this video just feels wrong. You sound like you think you are completely objective, and you think every one else out there is wrong for being biased. None of these people you are criticizing are journalists or acting as such. Sure, the game awards are mostly commercials- and the 2021 show was largely disappointing for the people who sat through all 3 hours of it. But have some respect for the game devs and real people out here who are making things happen. The end of this video before your credit card sponsor you sound like you are just proclaiming to cancel this person, and cancel that person. I don't think it's a good look for you. Even if everything you claim is 100% correct, none of this stuff is so horrible really that you can't at least be respectful and decent.
