Forgotten City has truly nailed this. It’s polished, fantastically well thought through, and continually impresses the player. I know it’s anecdotal but I played through this game in one sitting. It’s that good. The last game I did that with was Valhalla… JK, that would literally kill me. It was Celeste on a snowy day when I was stuck inside (happily). That is always indicative to me that the game has captivated me, and this game truly does that.
In my mind, this year there’s only been two, maybe 3 if you include Psychonauts 2, games that have blown expectations out of the water: The Forgotten City, and It Takes Two. This one is phenomenal and is one of the two front runners, especially if you look at the review scores.

At first I was pissed and tried to get out but I didn't have a recent save so I forced myself to finish the quest. And what a journey, so great that it takes me some times to really realize how good it was and different of Skyrim's quests.

I played the mod when it first came out, so I knew what some of the reveals would probably be, but I loved finding out how the game would differ from the mod and make them unique, and finding all the totally original stuff they'd added that weren't ever in the mod.

I mean yeah...Skyrim builds a nice bubble around the player making them think they impact anything but in reality they don't. After that questline is over it's over and it doesn't truly impact anything else. This makes everything in the game extremely shallow and meaningless. Once you understand that the bubble is broken and it no longer becomes as fun or alive as you saw it before.

There are so many extremely talented storytellers out there not getting the attention they deserve in the gaming industry. And why? Because too many publishers and developers don't take quality writing and storytelling seriously enough to have numerous good writers as salaried staff. To me, they should be regarded as equally as important as-if not more important than-good artists and programmers. Because without a good story, it's just all flash with no substance.

Got the best ending and achievements in my first playthrough too, just by listening to peple and planning ahead. My jaw hit the floor several times throughout the night, and looking back the revelations might seem obvious, but that's because they come very naturally in the story.

They could've written the note in a way that encourages the player to enter the portal, as oppose to telling them not to and then only providing them with the only way to continue the game - that they have to enter the portal. An easy edit would've been to state something along the lines of... "If my ill-fated luck does not beset you, you will be rewarded with [fill_in_blank (I haven't played the game)] and a life not ventured by many, of untold mysteries and love I could never have known"... etc. Let the note be a journal entry, the last tale he tells before the character passes. Even if danger is assured once you enter the portal, that doesn't matter. In the note you can hint at some strange occurrences and troublesome events.

Probably my favorite thing about this game is the philosophical debate about sin and the important questions it asks. Especially when you get the canon ending and have your final confrontation (without the crown), that whole conversation was SO interesting and SO thought provoking. After I beat the game, I literally had to exploratively write things down to figure out what I believed about sin and punishment and how they relate to errors and mistakes. Especially considering that I'm a religious person, this kind of thing is personally important to think about, and this game brings it all up in a very respectful and thought provoking way.
Not to mention that this game is just good in all sorts of other aspects. One of my favorite things is the immersive Roman civilization. Why aren't there any RPGs in ancient Roman times? Like WTF game developers? We need Skyrim in Rome, dammit! Or maybe like a KCD in Rome...
POTENTIAL SPOILERS AHEAD, this is what I wrote about that I mentioned before. GIGANTIC COPY/PASTE WARNING:
In the forgotten City, the many are punished for the sins of the one. The god of the game has rationales for a lot of seeming contradictions. Many things that are obvious sins are not punished because they get off on a technicality, or an extremely literal interpretation of laws. However, the god himself says that no laws are perfect and are best captured by the real world golden rule, and that humans are perfectly capable in our hearts to know right from wrong. When our character calls him out for not being strict enough, his response is a rhetorical: then did you want me to destroy you all? To which the obvious answer is no… we want more grace because we cannot seem to be perfect.
However, sometimes I doubt that we can't be perfect. Certain sins are very easy to not commit, like 1st degree murder and rape, and we can be perfect in regards to those sins. However, the proper definition of sin is 'missing the mark' and can involve errors as opposed to malice. Malice can be done away with - maybe even easily - just by controlling our psyche. Error can only be minimized. If we are always trying to do better, by thinking more and knowing more (avoiding mistakes of negligence and ignorance) and having principles like 'treat others how you want to be treated', then the only sins that can be committed are going to be due to not having better foresight.
Sometimes, however, there can be a blend between these, between error and malice. For instance, I work at FedEx. We all know that it would be a sin to slam packages for fun, because they belong to someone else. It is essentially destruction of property. But if I had a long day and a sore back and a lack of sleep and personal stress, I would be tempted to get lazy and 'efficient' with how I treat packages in an effort to expend less energy. I may not be throwing and slamming them, but my temporary laziness may result in the packages being slammed. To the recipient, it all looks the same when the packages show up like a pancake. In my head, however, I had an ill-conceived justification, and may think I was not morally culpable, especially when I tell myself that I am not purposefully slamming anything. It may be that in that moment, my moral intuitions failed, and therefore I made a sin that was a blend of error and malice.
I've always thought it was very interesting and confusing that Christ himself had to grow in his moral understanding. Doesn't this imply that he had moral ignorance at some point and likely committed some kinds of sins? He likely committed some kinds of sins having to do with, say, being a crying baby and giving his parents hardships in raising him. Granted, we could say many things about whether crying is a sin and whether his parents loved him and would always forgive his sins - nevertheless, his parents received 'pancake packages' and no doubt reaped some seeds of errors. I am fully willing to believe that Christ could have had no malice in his heart at all, but what would he have done if he had a long day and a sore back and a lack of sleep?
How to: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you:
-Start a journal and every day write 5 things that people did to you that you did not like, but that you yourself do. Then, write 5 things people did to you that you did like, but that you do not regularly do.
-Try to come up with 5 new ways to treat people that you would like.
-If the goal is utopia, we must strive for perfection. We cannot simply do what other people do, otherwise the upward trend can only plateau. There must also be an aspect of creativity in living out the golden rule, and this will create an ever better and better reality.

They had tried importing some facial capture movements, but that resulted in some overwrought, almost cartoonish animations. This more subdued, almost hand-hewn approach is much better.
The No Clip interview with the developer is worth watching for the story of this game's creation.

The forgotten city and Deathloop is completely different in how they execute the time loop mechanic.
Deathloop is more about killing two or three birds with one or two stones(Hitman/Bond-like objectives)
Deathloop is fun. Not a masterpiece(IGN🤣) but definitely executed brilliantly. It’s dishonest and quite frankly LAZY of you to call the mechanics and the way the developers chose to design their game LAZY. “Simplicity is not laziness, it can be quite genius.” Yes I just made that up 🤣
But I’ll hold for your in-depth review. Hopefully it’s not LAZY.
Forgotten city is about narrative and secrets and doing the “Right things” it’s a Serious game and it takes itself seriously which works amazingly well for it.

  • @Tore_Lund
    @Tore_Lund 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Forgotten City forces you to make ethical choices, and they are not on the usual trivial game level. Also the mythology is genuine, no fantasy inventions and as said in this video, the logic in the game is consistent. I haven't been so excited since I played Myst, which was inferior compared to this..

Triple A: thousands of devs, hundreds of millions budget. Releases a buggy re-skin of their previous game after 5-6 years of development.
Indie devs: handful of devs, no budget. Releases a brand new game with an awesome concept and new gameplay mechanics after 5-6 years of development.

On top of that, there are TONS of AAA companies, the fact that we only really complain about a handful of the biggest ones, is a good thing!

Because, employing 1k+ people to develop a game is expensive and the families of the devs have to eat? Now if you want to discuss about management/higher ups taking a good chuck of the money that's another thing and I don't have the data or knowledge to discuss it.

Well, your mistake is when you thought that way more people on a project automatically also means way more talent.
I haven't play this game but i have seen another video about it where i think it was stated that it was started as mod for some game i don't remember, maybe Skyrim.
Seems interesting but i don't think it's the type of game that i would really enjoy either.

That's why I don't mind religion so much because it gives a good set of morals to go by and ethics for the general population to adhere to that have been proven to be beneficial to a cooperative successful society.
