We live in the country but our kids are grown and we enjoy traveling so we don't participate in the animal side of homesteading on our own property. However, we have neighbors that raise a cow for us, friends that we get eggs and raw milk from that I make yogurt with and a garden that we plant each year. I also got on the sourdough kick a couple of years ago so I make our bread but the one thing I just can't wrap my head around is canning! It is so intimidating. I loved your idea of freezing vegetables. I will definitely look in to that for this year! Thank you!

I moved from Jersey to SC and didn't realize how much more access we had within a short distance to farm stands and local produce up there. Granted I'm in a more touristy area, but the farm stands seem to be few in this area. Our health food store has some fresh eggs at times, but not inexpensive and when he sold at the farm stand it turned out he was actually from my same town in NJ. Small world.

I grow a big garden and it's a LOT of work. There's nothing better than fresh berries or tomatoes rinsed and eaten 10 minutes after picking. I've made new gardening friends and planted many native plants. They are perennials habituated to our climate and weather. Once established, they're easy to care for and provide food and habitat for pollinators. I also grow herbs, many veg, and lots of flowers and share with friends. We trade off help with chores and lend out tools among friends. All helps to save and live healthier. I'm eating more plant-based Whole Foods and feel better without chemicals and animal products. With one planet to share, small efforts really add up.

We have been feeling the pull to do more homesteading over the past few years too. But it definitely can be very intimidating! Adding just one thing each year has been the best way for us to sustain it. I learned to bake bread from fresh ground grains about 6 years ago. Then we’ve added gardening, fruit trees and bushes, canning, etc. But just one thing each year. Trying to jump into everything would be very overwhelming! Thanks for all your great tips. Have a great weekend!

I couldn’t agree more! Especially when it may take a year or more to see the “fruits” of your labor ☺️ Have a great weekend yourself!

I have canned for the years. Last year I purchased a dehydrator. This was a game changer for me. The amount of produce you can store in a small space is perfect for anyone. And there is no need for electricity once it is dehydrated and it can be stored for up to twenty years. I purchase glass jars at thrift stores to store the food in and store in a closed dark cabinet. Dehydrated fruits make the best heart snacks.

Hey Chris. Thanks for sharing! What kind of canning supplies do you use? Which dehydrator? When looking into things I do so much research it can be numbing. Your direction would be greatly appreciated.

Great video as always. I think that homestead lifestyle is really about embracing simplicity and slow living. So things like decorating your home with repurposed and natural items. Or learning heritage crafts...sewing, crocheting, soap making. Those things cause us to slow down and live intentionally. And of course, those of us who are homesteaders spend lots of time outside which is something anyone can do. Even if you don't have a garden, you can take nature walks and notice the natural world around you (and that plays into the slow living lifestyle, too!)

We have chickens and eggs everywhere here in Maine!!!
I have to warn you about raw milk. We have 5 kids but back when we had only 2 kids I was on a raw milk kick. Our 2 kids and myself were hospitalized for ecoli. My oldest was on dialysis. His kidneys shut down. I almost needed a plasma transfer. I made a TH-cam video about it. I'm not kidding. I won't touch anything unpasteurized now! Stay safe and healthy my friend. Love from Maine

I grew up on a small farm and we definitely lived the homestead life even though we didn't know that we were! We had to do it because of costs and that is how my parents made their living. My mom did raise chickens and sold the eggs but other than that they worked the farm land. We always had a cow, pig and chickens in the freezer that we had raised. I didn't know you could buy hamburger at the grocery store until I was much older! Thanks for sharing and have a great day!

I feel very blessed my husband is an avid gardener, our oldest son raises chicken, cows and pigs for us, and I love cooking from scratch and have always canned fruits and vegetables. My dad was a baker so I know how to make bread though sourdough bread is still a struggle so I just make other things with the starter. Also I started making sauerkraut the same time you did thanks to farmhouse on boone. It’s so easy and absolutely delicious. TH-cam has a plethora of information for anyone who wants to learn how to mock homestead. No is the time to learn with the state of everything. Thanks so much for making this video.

You should look into container gardening. Even just a small garden helps. When I first started gardening, I just dived right in, while having 5 little ones. I had to do all the digging and seed starting, but I only did maybe 4 or 5 different vegetables and two herbs.

I think I have done a little Homesteading my whole life. I thrifted and re-purposed fabric. Made jam, pizza dough and bread. I buy some store bought.. Sewed clothes and curtains from yard sale or remnants of fabric. I cooked most meals from fresh ingredients. Refinished used furniture and grew tomatoes. It gives me a feeling of being self sufficient. Doing everything
while working a full time job and raising two sons.

I wondered what "homesteading" referred to...now I know. I was raised by parents who planted gardens, we froze vegetables, and we raised chickens. Also, they would buy a side of beef from a local farmer. As an adult, I've raised a garden a few times, almost always have cooked from scratch, bought fresh produce. I'm 75, and always have believed fresh is best. It's good to know that many are returning to whole foods when taking time to cook at home seemed almost a lost art. Covid has been an awful thing, but perhaps the good Lord has used it for good as so many have found family life again and the good in healthy cooking and eating.

My husband has a hard time with spending money on organic foods but we do have friends that we can get beef from. It's a big purchase up front but it ends up being under $2 a pound in the end for all the different cuts. So our freezer is full of T-bone steaks and roasts that we would have a hard time affording at a regular store. We really want to find a place to get pork but haven't yet. We also have other friends that have bees so I try to buy honey from them each fall but then will supplement with store bought because we go through a lot. I try to make homemade buns/bread a lot but I do buy too because it's hard to keep up with a family of 10.

I live in the city ... I do have a wonderful little garden in my front yard...The neighbors call me The Garden Lady in the Apron...lol I use cloth napkins. My Daughter in Law cans so much from their garden and shares with me...I freeze things from my garden...Best of both worlds. I use a product that is plant based for Body Wash Shampoo Conditioner and I use dryer balls for in my dryer. I buy from local Farmers too. We have a wonderful Farmers Market and our local public schools all have gardens so that the children learn about gardening. I too use cloth napkins and I have a box of rags for spills.

I have always been big into canning and when we moved a few years ago and didn't have a garden I bought local produce and continued to can. Luckily we have a large Amish community next to us and I buy a lot from them, plus we have a farmers market at a park a few blocks away.. It worked out so well that when we added a garden it was much smaller than we previously had.

I think a good first step is to check out your cupboards, refrigerator and freezer to see how many prepackaged foods you are currently using. You may be surprised. Then look for ways to replace one product at a time with a from scratch recipes. Later you can work on organic or other local meats etc as you have the desire, money and time to pursue. Baby steps are a wonderful start.

As far as cleaning products, I still use stuff like Lysol or tide. I try to buy as much dye free products, food and drink as possible. There is no need for that stuff! I have cooked every meal, from scratch, for over two years now! We literally have not eaten out or done carry-out or eaten in other peoples home in over two years. I have Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma (cancer of the immune system therefore also immune compromised due to it). I am still have to wear a mask everywhere and social distance due to the pandemic. Please have compassion for folks who are still “grounded” while most have moved on. It’s pretty depressing. We are blessed to have a neighbor who raises chickens! We buy 4 dozen every week. We have semi-local farms that raise grass fed meats and CSA shares. Quite expensive. We don’t have extra freezers or refrigerator and no room for them. It sure would be nice though. We just do the best we can with what God provides. Lots of great suggestions, Hilary. Yes- Vitacost is still around. I buy from them often.

We make tomato sauce every two years. We get the tomatoes from a local farm stand (usually 10 bushels). It is a multi family process and we all benefit from the results for the next two years. My husband grows peppers, tomatoes and lettuce in large containers. He started the seeds last weekend. When we retire we plan to install a small greenhouse and do more.

I grew up with my dad growing a wonderful garden and an avid canning mom. So I have been living this lifestyle for a long time. I can't imagine any other way. I love knowing exactly what is in the food I am serving. We also home can and freeze meat. There are people in our community that raise animals for us to purchase and butcher,. I'm so excited that you are thinking about a garden, etc. I love getting a little dirt therapy. Farmer's markets are the best for filling in what I can't grow. I love how you have your family involved. I am by no means a pro, but this is what I have always known. Best of luck to all of you!!

Hilary you shouldn't be intimidated by a garden, you could start by tilling a smaller space and fencing it in, getting the soil amended and established for gardening. Maybe just do one or two items you buy the most of from the farmers market. For me that was zucchini and sweet peppers, then I added an additional vegetable each year.

We have a big garden and I have never canned before, I just bought some canning jars and am going to start canning this year.I have been looking at dehydrator also.We moved in town 5 years ago,I wanted our backyard to look like a little farmstead so my husband built a tiny house that looks like an old cabin, that is a playhouse for our grandkids, it even has a loft for sleeping. We have metal chickens, sheep, goats, a cow , and a life size bull, and a 6 foot rooster, all enclosed in a 6 foot privacy fence. Our grandkids love our little farmstead and love to play at mimi and poppy house. They love working in the garden with me, We plant alot of Pumpkins too.A real farmstead would be great but this is the next best thing. When I look out my French doors at the back yard it just makes me smile.

A few years back I grew a container garden, no more than twenty pots and I grew so many vegetables that I shared them with friends and family. Love to grow vegetables and eat them fresh when I get home. It does take a lot of time and effort. Mainly to water if you don't have a watering system set up. Last year I hardly grew any vegetables and while I had more time on my hands I felt less productive and missed the fresh garden vegetables. This year I plan to grow a garden again but I want to make it so it's less work. Just a few pots and more garden boxes with some form of a watering system. I miss seeing my garden grow and my almost two story tall sunflowers. Don't want to overburden myself but I want a decent harvest this year. If I had more land I would love to have chickens and fresh eggs. That would be the closest homesteading I would get.

Our company every summer has a farmers market that runs into September, its so nice to be able to run down on lunch and shop for homegrown fruits, veggies at reasonable prices. I have never thought of googling to find local farms and coops in my area, I think I am going to do that. I am trying to eat cleaner and have thought of making my own gluten free bread but have yet to do so. I am thinking of this year doing a container garden on my patio to have fresh tomatoes, radishes, carrots, leaf lettuce etc. Thankyou for all the great ideas! Great video. It’s like you read my mind 😂. I have been really interested in homesteading recently and have subscribed to a couple of really great homesteading TH-cam channels (Acre Homestead is a fave with some great cooking/meal inspiration). Have also been subscribed to Farmhouse on Boone for many years. Lisa is great. I too have had some moments of being overwhelmed with the idea homesteading but your video is a great reminder that many of us have probably already implemented some of the ideas you mentioned. Also, your comment that the process doesn’t need to be all or nothing but rather gradual is encouraging and spot on. Baby steps as they say. Thanks for the inspiration. Lots of great takeaways here. Have a lovely day 😊.

    Great video Hilary
I live in a over 55 community, and in the spring we have in front of the common area a farmers market one day a week, the farmers come to us and set up the tables. Most is organic, and being we are plant based I can do a great amount of my food shopping there, while enjoying the weather and sunshine. My husband and I really don’t go out to dinner, I love cooking fresh clean food at home. So I never mind buying organic with the money we save eating at home.

We are empty nesters and I have limited mobility, so my garden changed from a larger garden to container gardening, which is manageable! We can and freeze. We do buy from, local dairy farm and cattle farm as well. We have considered chickens but there are lots of farmers markets and stands on the side of the road here so we are good with buying them from the homesteader.
Quality products cost more but when cooking from home, you end up saving money if you buy in bulk like you mentioned. Instead of packaged lunch meat, I will boil a couple chicken breasts and slice it thinly for sandwiches throughout the week. And sometimes I had Italian dressing to it when I'm browning it to change up the flavor of the sandwich.

Farmhouse on Boone and Elliott Homestead (Shaye Elliott) have great videos on it. Shaye does a dry sourdough starter method that I now use. More practical for me. I don’t use it a lot, so the dry method is less maintenance.

We are in the middle of farmland in Central Pennsylvania, so we have access to lots of local produce/meat/dairy/eggs/etc too. We do grow some of our own as well! I try to cook from scratch as much as possible.
My extended family gets together to make huge crocks of sauerkraut every fall, that we divide up between the families and we can/freeze/preserve produce too. I love to make freezer jam, and can salsa!
I haven’t ventured into sourdough yet either… it is intimidating! We also don’t have any of our own animals… yet ☺️

Lovely and inspiring video! We incorporate small things as well. Like you, my parents garden and share their harvest with us. Each summer I can tomatoes, tomato soup, vegetable soup, and green beans from their garden. Our freezer is a huge blessing. One hour bread has become part of our weekly rotation (thanks to you!) along with a pot of some sort of homemade soup. We use simple, natural, multi purpose cleaners. Another big one is making sure I check in on our meat and produce regularly to see if anything is going bad- this really keeps us from wasting much! The bigger commitment things- having our own garden, bees, chickens, etc aren’t in our schedule right now. I realize the commitment that comes with those things and right now they’re not for us! And that’s ok! But you’re right, small changes are helpful! Thanks for always inspiring, friend!

Sounds like you are doing a great job. We bought a seal a meal and when we buy meat we buy large packs and divide it and seal it. Put the date on it. It lasts up to 3 yrs depending on the type meat. Something to check out. Have a good day.

It’s good to be realistic about what we can and can’t do in each season, nothing worse than wasting precious food. So glad you enjoy that bread, I’m so glad I stumbled across it!

Making your own yogurt is easy. You can find recipes on line. I use my families recipe. Once you make your own you can’t go back to store bought.
The biggest advice is to use whole milk.
A glass bowl & wooden spoon.Metal bowl or spoon will make it “sweat”.
Your a great Wife & Mom. It is hard work. The time goes by & the best joy comes with knowing how you took care of your family when they are grown & you now have time to reflect! 😊🙏🏼🌷🌸🐝

Good morning Hillary from Portland Oregon. I am currently baking bread more, looking for ways to stock up for the pantry and freezer. We made apple butter, pumpkin butter and fig preserves last fall. I too want to make a sourdough starter, so thanks for the reminder. A garden? Yes I have also thought about it too. Thanks for the inspiration to us all. There are countless ways we can be good stewards and live healthier.

I love your ideas Hillary! I think you’d be great at sourdough. Just like sauerkraut, I was intimidated by it but you can experiment with it and find a rhythm that works for you. I feed my starter once a week if I don’t feel like baking bread with it, than I pop in the fridge and it’s doing it’s magic there. Pancake is my go to recipe with sourdough. Blessings to you! x

I have enjoyed watching you since Evie was your only child I love your decorating style. It has always inspiring to see what you can do without spending a lot of money. Being single I wish I had a Dan. I have been working on the homesteading road for a while. My local high school has a CSA that I joined a few years ago and it's wonderful. They also sell eggs separately. I'm also intimidated by sourdough. Jersey does had great pick-your-own places but it cost my $5 to cross the bridge to get home. This year I want to learn how to water bath and pressure can. Thank you for sharing. You channel just keeps more and more enjoyable to watch.

My best friend lives in PA in Amish country and she does the same thing with the eggs, where she leaves money in a basket and takes her eggs…I live in Southern California and we’d never be able to have that here…it’s so charming that you have this option. Loved your video and the tips; I’d still love a link to your video where you make your own bread and not the one you linked (I think you showed us a screenshot out of your recipe binder..?) I’m just getting into bread making and need simpler recipes than the one you linked.

We go to produce stands. We put out a garden. We grow more potatoes than other stuff. I have a crock that we make kraut in. We make our own salsa, spaghetti sauce and other foods. We get dry pintos and can some but others we look and seal in airtight sealed bags. They're ready to wash and cook. We have to put a six foot fence around our garden to keep out deer, bears, and groundhogs. Sounds like you're doing a great job. Take care. ❤️

We do try to buy whole ingredients, and grow a few salad veggies from the garden and to share with neighbors. Thank you for the inspiration! I aporeciate your delicious looking meals and devotion to feeding your family well.

My hubs grows veges in the backyard every year (mostly hot peppers, tomatoes, and cucumbers). Sweet corn can sometimes be found on a roadside stall and it is the best corn ever and a nice treat. We have Amish stands every weekend, and also a produce junction store that opened locally that serves the community with fresh produce and flowers. Our produce stores have been popping up for a while, so even in the city there are ways to get fresh farm grown produce now.

I've always wanted to take some steps towards a homestead lifestyle. We aren't on a farm, just one acre. But I have done some of the things you have mentioned, like the vinegar formula for general cleaning, and I love that! And I try to buy at the farmers market near us, but to tell the truth, a lot of the produce is crazy expensive. And trying growing some veggies this year, we'll see how that goes. It's hot and dry in Texas.

Sourdough is such a freeing process, Hilary! Do it, you won't regret it. It is definitely overwhelming at first just because you have to put a little trial and error mentality into the gazillion methods out there - I got some starter and a basic recipe from a neighbor and just jumped in, learned a ton along the way and now I have what works for me and it's the only bread we eat. The whole family loves it and it truly is a joy to add it to my routine each week!
