Probably my Favourite Talk Talk song and a brilliant video that plays with the norms and expectations. In many cases Hollis's persona contradicts the line he's singing, smiling for angry lines and vice versa.
This is all based around the Luke Rhinehart novel about someone who lives his life by the roll of a dice and the lyrics make a lot more sense if you bear that in mind - as Mark Hollis says 'the dice decide my fate'. Mark's interesting approach to the video, and other Talk Talk ones, is symptomatic of his sometimes tense relationship with the whole idea of music videos - for example, it isn't coincidence that Mark's mouth is often covered up on the video for 'It's My Life' ...he refused to 'play along' when it was being made! Of course nobody likes everything so there's no need to be concerned and thanks for the honesty.
The Dice Man is a great book and it’s really brilliant to see how it inspired one of the Greatest songs ever written . Mark screwed up in the video because Tim would be shouting different emotions he had written on slips of paper beforehand so Mark never knew what was coming next, and that’s why you see him give that little smile and iconic dance. Mark is trying to keep up and his eyes flick to Tim and he’s trying to match the emotion. I would love to see outtakes of it like they have for Dum Dum Girl. Tim coordinated the members in frame based on dice rolls as well.
Interesting, as a spanish boy I grew up listening english bands without understanding a single word but enjoying the beats and the melody. I think music is about feeling and not understanding. Just different approaches, I loved this song being a child 😊
Im 77 an AUSTRALIAN singer songwriter and this is my favourite TALK TALK SONG MARK was a brilliant very emotional songwriter It not meant to be to uplift YOU ENJOY HIS EMOTION😍😘
You're the first reaction channel I've listened to that said that they didn't like a particular song. You gave it a listen and gave your honest opinion. I like that so I've subscribed. Hope your luck changes, good luck with the channel.
the song is based on Mark Hollis the lead singers favourite books The Dice Man by Luke Rhinehart . really sorry you guys are having a bad day I really hope things get better for you both . Talk Talk do write songs about serious subjects and I kind of love them for that but I'm also a little biased as I'm a Brit . sorry again it didn't brighten up your day . take care guys
We'll take another listen, most certainly. Maybe when we're relaxed, with a nice cup of tea, we can get our head around it. I don't want to just hear it once and dismiss it. Sometimes circumstance affects judgement.
I was eight when this song came out. But even as a Dutch boy who didn't speak a single word of English, I understood that this was NOT a happy song, even though Mark is seen smiling throughout the video. The song and its delivery are so bitter and ironic. I loved it from the first note. From what I found out later, this song is about equating life choices with a roll of a dice, which is why those dice numbers can be seen throughout the video. And why Mark mentions the word "Numbers" multiple times in the chorus.
Nice pick . Not sure where you guys are from , Canada ? If so, how about diving into some of the brilliant musical talent that country has given us ? (half the world probably don't know they were Canadians) Personal favourites Joni Mitchell "A Case of You" Tragically Hip "Bobcaygeon" and there are so many many more to choose from . Sarah McLaughlin , Neil Young ! , The Guess Who, Bachman Turner Overdrive, Leonard Cohen, Bryan Adams, Rush, Cowboy Junkies ! the list is almost endless.
We are Canadian and will definitely put up more Canadian content at some point soon. We know a lot of the greats, of course, but I am sure not all of their works.
I guess it's true that "No two pairs of ears ever hear the same Music" 🤷♂ When I recently heard it for the first time again in a veeery long time (on the JustJP channel, and I think I've noticed you around there, too 😁), it almost blew me away how amazing this song really is! 🤯 It's a perfect pop song, with great lyrics, an awesome arrangement and really good sound and mix! Especially considering everything back at that time was still being recorded to tape and not digitally, no auto-tune, etc 😀👍
@The Mighty 'V' Exactly right. It's not my favourite Talk Talk song by a long chalk, but it certainly deserves better than "it's got a good beat, but i don't know what it's about. i'm sincerely hoping it wasn't you that wrote that, since the post has now been removed!
@@Katehowe3010 - Nah, wasn't me. I too like other Talk Talk songs even better than this one, with 'The Colour Of Spring' being my favourite TT album, but the song I keep returning to the most has been 'After The Flood' from their last album 😊
@The Mighty 'V' Thank God for that. 😁. As for my favourite Talk Talk song, it would have to be "It's Getting Late In The Evening, the flip side to "Life's What You Make It", followed by "Inheritance" and "New Grass"! 👌
These Americans seem very very shallow when it comes to British moods, sarcasm and humour especially in their music, they often mock the Ken and Barbie mentality where music has to sound plastic, orderly and happy. Thats what I like about the British psyche, they don't always think that Ken and Barbie are perfect, they do admit that the Ken and Barbie world is sometimes phoney, shallow and meaningless, you can hear it in their music 🎶 🇬🇧
Such a shame is based off the book The Dice man where he uses dice rolls to decide his fate. In the video you can see numbers pop up beside Mark, Tim Pope had a bunch off different emotions written on paper and you see him look to the side real quick and his expression changes. Talk Talk Live at Montreaux 1986 will change your life. Whoever did the sound engineering is an absolute God, they pull out each instrument and Mark’s vocals so you hear the each individually. Losing Mark, even though he had retired long before was probably the most devastating loss to the music world since David Bowie/Michael Jackson. We always hoped he’d come back one day. A truly incredible and incomparable voice silenced forever. I cried for 3 weeks solid; a lot of us did. We chats full of grown men crying like babies. I miss Mark more than Andrew Fletcher because Andrew didn’t do anything musically. He was just there. But going back and playing colour of Spring and even back to I Believe In You, a devastatingly beautiful track that…if you aren’t crying by the second "Spirit" you have no soul.
They releases two of the most influential albums of the 80's. They're live set at ,Montreux is legendary
three lps, split and solo mark hollis. Died too young, a gem of a discography and a f** great artist !
One of the most underrated yet one of the best LIVE bands from my homeland 🇬🇧

So, that's what he's doing in the video. I can see his discomfort. So, it's more like he doesn't want to be doing this at all.

I was 15 when this first aired...I'm now 57 and I finally understand it ..❤
Can you please share what do you understand ?

We've been fans of some of the other reaction channels. We dislike when they 'like' every song. You can't like everything.

Try the live version from either Montreaux or Salamanca i am sure you will feel differently about this song.
Agree completely. Such passion on stage live. RIP Mark, I miss you
What does it matter what it’s about? It’s a pop song. It’s not philosophy, it’s tune.
we enjoy understanding what a song is about so that we can appreciate it more fully
It's.... It's *Mark Hollis.* 🥺 It _is_ philosophy!
If lyrics don't matter, then let the artists read from a phone book, or a recent electricity bill. 🙄
@@221b-Maker-Street Sure is! ✌️
@@Katehowe3010 lol.. classic .. comment of the century!
A unique epic to check out is Annie Lennox “a love song for a vampire”. A song that should have received major play but slipped through the cracks.
Gut, dass jeder einen anderen Geschmack hat.
Für die 80 iger ein wahnsinnig guter Song 😉
"It's got a good beat, and i don't know what it's about". Stick to vapid pop, as Talk Talk are for thinkers!

Unsurpassed....
Are you even alive guys? Supposevely you should react...
Clearly beyond your ken... You should go for something more bland and simplistic
