  • When driving your vehicle one of the first things you see out the windshield is your wiper blade arms. If you drive an older vehicle, those arms may have eroding paint. In this video I show a quick and easy method to restore those wiper arms using black semi-gloss spray paint. It was a very simple process and now my wiper blade arms look good as new!

Details make a HUGH difference on a older vehicle. Keep them looking great. Makes it easier to get more money for them if you sell it.

Cool video. I sanded and primed and painted mine gloss black on my 1996 Tahoe. Looked good but then I bought new arms on rock auto for cheap. The glass was streaking a lot. I heard that the springs underneath the arm go soft after many Years. No more streaks with the new arms

I have a 1996 Chevy Silverado. The wiper arms were also looking bad, but the windshield wiper cowl, the screen below the wipers, was broken. I replaced it from a junkyard and sanded the wiper arms. I washed everything and wiped it down with alcohol. I sprayed the parts with gloss black, suitable for plastic. The reassembled parts are a very nice surprise, they are stunning. If you do replace the cowl, you don't have to remove the hood. Go slow and take advantage of how it flexes. As to the wiper arms, I used a few successively larger flat head screwdrivers to insert into the gap between the arm and the cog on which it sits. A simple twist pushes it up, change to a bigger screwdriver and repeat.

For other vehicles, there are some special flat tip screwdriver style that fits under the edge of the arm base to loosen it. Rather than pay the money, stop by the local hardware stores and pick up a paint can opener (the metal style they give away for free or sometimes $1).

Don't forget to replace old worn spring that holds windshield wiper arm and blade to the glass. Over time it looses tension and doesn't press as hard on the glass leading to streaks.

It's funny I came across this video because I just painted my wiper arms today on my 96 Silverado 5.7L and I'm waiting for them to dry. I've done this before on other vehicles and it's cheaper than buying OEM wiper blades for sure. If anybody tries this just remember prep work goes a long way to making the painted surface last a long time. I've even used Meguiars wax that is safe for black trim on my wiper blades. This makes the water bead off of them and the color last even longer. Goodluck everyone.

On my 2004 Tahoe, my front wipers look ok, but the rear was bad. So I've tried your fix. I got a bit too much paint in one place, so I'll have to sand and touch up, but the arm looks great. BTW, I have exactly the same ladder, so I hung the arm like you did, only I raised the ladder so I didn't have to bend over so much. Thanks.
