On greeting the kafir with salaam or not - I can't remember which Hadith it is but there was a time where Jews and Christians in Medinah, who didn't like the Prophet ﷺ , would greet him with something that sounded similar to assalaamu alaykum but wasn't - it would actually mean "death be upon you." So, he advised the Muslims to respond with "waalaykum" (and with you) to send their intentions back to them.
