Hi Steer Nightmare! Prepping my Jeep YJ for Hydro Assist and Hi Steer - Part 1

- Jeep yj hi steer! I tackle problem after problem with the steering in my 1991 Jeep YJ. It was steering like a school bus with the Dana 44 front axle / reid knuckles. I set out to correct poor turning radius, poor handling, trimming steering stops, relocating my steering box, repairing my steering shaft, and a bunch more random stuff! I will be adding DIY hydro assist in a future video, and I need to get everything steering properly and dialed in before I add a hydraulic ram.

To clarify, I'm not saying Ackerman steering is bad, but it does cause your front wheels to turn at different angles which can reduce your overall steering angle, and secondly, the amount of the angle designed into my knuckles was meant for a ford truck, it was a bit excessive for a short wheelbase Jeep.

I hope you don't add too much steering angle and start breaking axle shafts. You know I've been there.
Before I modified anything I was only getting 27° of steering, according to Spicer the U joints can go up to 40°. I’m going to try to settle around 33 to 35 if this newer arm will allow
Nice! I’m running the same axles in my solid axle swapped gmc. Let us know what ram you decide to run and what the steering angle ends up at when it’s all finished.
Surplus center 1.5” x 8” ram with swivel eyes, about $140. I’m going to have to build a spacer to limit the travel because I won’t need 8 inches but more than 6” I think
Never thought of using a pipe to clsoe the vice grips for "kill mode". Stealing that idea nad the kill mode terminology. lol
I came up with that at work one day, one of those "you dont go home till you fix it" jobs.

Yeah it’s a bit of a cluster and unfortunately there’s no manual for putting hi steer on a 78 ford axle into a yj with wagoneer springs pushed forward 2”😅 I just got the flat steering arm today so it won’t be too long
Sweet progress. It sucks sometimes. I just spent 3 weeks doing my 3 and 4 link stuff from scratch, I know the feeling
Yeah I hear that. My progress is quite a bit farther than the video, I’m workin on part 2 should be out next Monday. The hi steer part is done, it’s time to do the ram. I sure would love to give it a test spin to feel the difference first. Gained about 5-7 degrees of steering angle just by getting the knuckle stops shaved off and dialed
@@FlawedOffroad I finished all my long arm stuff 2days before snowpocalypse. Ended up being a 2 week torture test on the rig. But ya my steering stuff is next. Glad I seen all your issues before I started cutting lol
I guess it's late now, but check an astro van pitman arm for a flat arm that's right at the stock yj arm length.
I thought about it but couldnt find one online and its been below zero so the junkyard didnt sound fun. I got the wfo flat arm on last night and drilled it to 6" and it looks like it will clear

Did you move your steering box forward or just repair the internal welded nuts and box it back up? I’m a little confused since you mentioned a WFO bracket of some sort.
the bracket is a relocation bracket that moves the box 1" forward and about 1/2" down.
to move it any farther you have to cut or notch out the front crossmember and such, which its looking like I wont need to do that. I got the new arm on last night and it looks good, should be a new video early next week!
one more thing, I wasnt filming the frame repair but I did post a picture of the nut plate repair on my instagram Flawed_offroad
I forgot to mention, the reason for the clearance issue is the 2” front stretch from the wagoneer leaf springs
I’m using the same axle, knuckles, steering box relocation, and running everything on the high steer arms with hydro assist. I have my front axle stretched 2.5”-3” forward as well. Running a waggy pitman arm with the drag link on top. Everything clears easily and it drives great on and offroad.
Awesome I might have to check out your set up. I just got that flat Pitman arm in today but I’m still wrapping up rebuilding the gearbox. I’m going to assume that the tie rod never comes up far enough to hurt your Pitman arm?because with that much stretch it’s sticking out over top of it right? Mine is

I'm so glad I Subbed to your channel, my son and I are working on his new to us 95 YJ and are binge watching all things Jeep YJ build related in order to educate ourselves on what we may or may not want to do to it eventually. A lot was already done to it before we got it, but I feel like we could learn a lot from watching your videos. please keep them coming at your convenience of course.
