Hi, yes, you can blow through it to test it, but keep in mind that the fluid to the solenoids is usually under pressures of up to 90 psi. Using the proper pressures to test it is better. Yes, you can also test the solenoid with a switch while driving provided that you get the wiring connections correct.
Hi,I added the tool number and SPX website in the video description shown above. It is a great tool, but very expensive. You might also try ebay for a used one. Thank you for the nice comment.
Wow, very knowledgeable technician. I have a 2002 Jaguar X-type, Jatco JF506E transmission, that will not shift in to 3rd gear, it's in safety mode. I received codes, P0758, P0748, both solenoid codes when I try to drive it. I was wondering if I can test these solenoids like this, or if there is something special about these transmissions where you can't test them? Also, can you recommend a good tranny fluid? I have a bunch of Royal Purple AFT Max I was going to change it out with. Great Video!
Depending on the type of switch you are testing. They are what we call variable apply or on off. Variable apply switches cannot be tested using this method.
Yes, The tool used in the video is part part number J-44246, it is available from SPX at gmtoolsandequipment.com/en-US/Pages/ItemDetail.aspx?SKU=J-44246
I’m interested on the product can you send me a link where they do international shipping, and I wanted to ask if Weber State University has an online course on Automotive ?
I took out both solenoids and they both clicked and when 12v was applied I could not blow through it no matter how hard I tried, vehicle shifts fine to the point that it goes into limp mode, and today I drove 9 miles and probably could of kept going but I slowed down and the service engine soon light came on and I went into limp, when it does this my engine runs bad too. Vehicle sat for 4 years. Could it be something else? I am not getting codes.
is it possible to just blow into the solenoid to test it? is it possible to locate the wires going to the solenoid and run them into a switch circuit- and flick the switch while driving to see if it causes a gear change? Ive got a 2000 s10 v6 that shifts late into second gear and gives service engine soon light. I'm thinking its a bad trans solenoid.. never replaced one before but it looks like it will be quite involved. i dont wanna dig into it until im sure its the solenoid. Thanks 4 help
So how much is this Air tool? And I assume gm dealer is where I can buy this? I need this in my life. I Had a saturn come in the shop that needed new 1-2 shift solenoid to be replaced. Would have made bench testing really easy with the air.
+Don G. Hi, the control winding on these solenoids only creates a magnetic field. The field pulls or pushes on a hydraulic valve or check-ball to open or close a hydraulic passage. There are no contacts to check. Winding continuity is only one of the three functions to test on these solenoids. Thanks for your feedback!
Can a malfunctioning pressure Solenoid valve jeopardise the mechanical integrity of the whole transmission....And if its replaced, well thats the entire valve body, would that be a sign that I must start preparing for a new transmission
Dual port on 46re - get airflow from outer screen to inner screen. Activate plugs all airflow stops. put air to inner screen and air flows to one set of ports drilled into case, activate solenoid no change. there is another set of ports on the case that I never get air out of. Is this defective? got 2nd and 3rd - nothing else - starts in second as well. No 1, OD, or lockup.
I'm testing the ohms on a 2005 Durango transmission valve assembly. There is one shift solenoid that you can access the terminals from outside the valve assembly - but the others, you have to open the assembly. Now, what would the resistance be on the outside one versus the ones inside? I'm getting two different readings on these solenoids...and the one outside "clicks", but the ones inside dont click (when power is applied). Should solenoids ALWAYS click???
Hi Great video. Could you please tell me in 722.9 transmission blue cap and black cap solenoids have to be supplied with same 12v to test or they should be tested at different volts just not to blow up by supplying more voltage then required. Secondly if one of the spring loaded check Valves is missing in 722.9 valvebody what could possibly be the symptoms Thank you in advance..
thank for good work pls i have 406 al4 auto transmission solenoid valve testing i saw 10.9 in your video my is 3.7 is the sensor bad or not thanks pls feed me back
+changomonkey86 Good question! No, they may or may not click since they are pulse width modulated, it depends upon their design. This test is for on-off solenoids. Thanks for watching.
I have a Hyundai Accent 2004 with 6 solenoids installed. When we do this test 3 solenoids we have this click but in the other 3 we do not. The model installed in my transmission is a4af3. Do you think my solenoids is bad or this can be normal? 1 have just 1 and 3 gear. Thanks!!
It could be normal. Not all solenoids will click. Measure their resistance. If the resistance is less than 10 ohms, it may not click like shown in the video because they are a pulsed solenoid. Best wishes.
You seem very knowledgeable on transmissions so if u don't mind I am having this trouble code on three different Korean cars -relatives cars- 2 Hyundai and 1 KIA all with automatic transmissions. the code is P0741....which reads Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Performance or Stuck Off DTC. Would u plz guide me to what is most likely cause of it?How serious ? and how to fix it? Appreciate the help, Thank u very much
That is a common code that can be caused by anything from the solenoid, worn out shift valves, o-rings, seals, and even the torque converter itself. I am not familiar with those versions of transmission and do not know the most common cause. Search the internet to see what others have found. Best wishes.
Appreciate your answer, Thank you very much. Just a quick question do u think running the car with this code would cause serious damage to the transmission?
I have my stuff I eat but I'm struggling to get against only get 1 2 3 I don't get 4 and I did try to replace the solenoid and keep giving me the same problem but if I disconnect from the battery and then put back again and I get all the shift 1234 so is anybody have the same problem who can help me buy
I have Mazda 5 I having problem with the gear only get 1 2 3 I don't get 4th gear so I buy the new solenoid I replace I still have the same problem but if I disconnect from the battery and put back again I get 1234 so it's anybody have the same situation or can help me to tell me what to do
What about Resistance testing, Is it a foolproof health check despite it doesn't leak? What do you think about a solenoid in it's natural habitat, is it prone to intermittent failures due to heat and dynamic fluid loading? Thank you very much for enriching our minds
Hey there, I usually comment on UFOs but today my little 93 323 has been bugging me since i could only find dots of info here and there. Now because of your video and a comment by a veiwer, I have learned a fair amount about the solenoids I used a Ohm meter to test the connecter outside the F4A-EL transmission, a 3 speed with OD and a hold button. (A rather brain tumor of a transmission in hind sight) along with the earlier style ECM/TCM allinone computer. The HOLD button illuminating on the SPEEDO is also some distraction. This car was given to me because it is in limp mode but don't think it was continually driven afterward. Thing is now that all solenoids but the pressure control solenoid test at @20 ohms resistance. Now if however the PCS has been going bad for some time, would there be less pressure to the other valves and subsequently wear the transmission clutches etc causing excessive heat ? I didn't try very long and so it didnt heat up and shift past first and so would not know if the check balls per solenoid shut off the flow per shift solenoid. As you can tell, I been reading a lot on this and also was wondering the voltage to test these solenoids to get the click. I run of course the 12 volt battery in the car but not sure if the voltage to them is past resistors of sorts. I wouldn't think so watching how confident you are. I wasn't sure if i should bother with the car as it is old too. lol. If you have some sort of offering to me would be of interest and Thanks for a informative video.
The PCS solenoid is normally around 5-7 ohms and does not usually click like the ON-OFF solenoids I tested in the video. 12-14V is the normal system voltage supplied to the solenoids while the vehicle is operating. There has to be a reason it is in limp home mode. Even a speed sensor or other TCM input can cause a problem like that on those early models. Best wishes.
Hi , I was getting a 20 ohm resistance but did not get around to a test with voltage as i wanted your reply. Thank you for getting back to me ! I will try that tomorrow after work but it is in tranny in car so i might be able to hear the click but wouldnt know how the seals are in each. Also I think i have confirmed to myself that the PCS is the prime suspect . I have only one tranny guy in town between the two ferries out of town and one other salvage yard. I am living in oblivion of the end of the planet and surrounded by only 350 cars and i chose this one to werk on. LOL, I think i might be MAD... Thanks again.
I have a question can you test a solenoid with just two wires to a battery cuz I checked to them you could barely hear click but the other three you can hear a loud click what does that mean
Hello. By Multimeter, I've measured my solenoid valve (cvt transmission) for Nissan micra v16, and put the read pointer to multimeter on the unit Ohm appeared result 12.7 ohm. Does it need to replacement or not? Tank you.
No they constantly coming on and off as you drive. Now as an example if you drive 500 miles without stopping and your number 1 shift solenoid is on in over drive then it is on for 500 miles. Make sense? Hope this helps.
I found this test bock online but will it work with Ford solenoids? The transmission is a 4r100. I’m having a issue where the truck moves like normal in reverse but I have to give it gas to get it going in forward and most of the time I have to pump the gas petal to get it moving then it will go and shift through all the gears but I have to pump the gas petal a bit as I’m driving it then when I get to cruising speed I’m good like it’s running normal. Any insight?
That solenoid block is for GM transmissions, but it may also work for some other brands too, I do not know. Always check the fluid level to begin diagnostics and check for codes. Best wishes
WeberAuto yup checked fluid and it’s within spec and no sign or smell of being burnt or anything. Put vehicle on the computer obd2 with no return of codes.
Hi, If you don't mind me asking a question about an automatic gearbox problem? It seems to slip when it changes to 2nd and 3rd gear. The more throttle I give, the more it seem's to slip, and if I leave the throttle, the gears seem's to engage the way it should! If possible, could you give me some ideas of what it could be? Regards.
probably a lot of transmission problems can be solved with these solenoids, and they're easy to access, so a non-transmission mechanic would feel comfortable working on them ...
What he is not telling you is that even if the solenoid is controlling the air pressure in this little test, if doesn't mean its good. The solenoid can seem good initially but when in use for a while as it heats up it can develop an internal short or open circuit making it useless just like fuel injector.
Hi, my 2004 Peugeot 307 automatic transmission died and I did the easy part by replacing the two solenoids that are usually responsible for that issue but I got no improvement. None of the gears will engage and when I jacked up the car with drive wheels off the ground and I rotate the drive wheels with the transmission in parked position one wheel at a time is moving, can you help me figure out if something is broken please, thanks much
I have a 1995 Isuzu rodeo, i was driving home and the motor was getting hot , i turned off the air conditioner and when the light turned the car started very slowly, i dropped it into first and it took off. Now the tranny doesn't shift automatically but it will manually and the check transmission light is blinking, any thoughts?
I need help I have a Bmw 325i 1994 auto tranny when I put it to d sometimes slip a little bit but when y put it in 3 and go back to d it work fine any suggestions pls help thanks
i have Volkswagen jetta 2.5L 2008 when the car is cold shifting Ok but when the car become hot it is slip and shift in 3th and 5th gear and in lowering gears it is hit i use ATF AC DELCO fluid i need to know what is the broplem please help
I hate to be the guy that says you need OEM parts but today I am going to be that guy. On European cars factory ATF is a must. VW doesn't make half the stuff that is on their cars, find out who makes the product then order it online from the your favorite online retailer. you save a lot by not having a VW logo on it and its the very same thing it is filled with from the factory. I happen to know that FEBI and PENTOSIN (CRP automotive)make most of the factory VW coolant and ATF. Another thing to do is put the Transmission computer into factory relearn mode, so the transmission computer will change the shift timing., this can clear up alot of problems. You dont always need a scan tool to put it into relearn mode, on some VWs you can perform a sequence of operations like press on the accelerator pedal turn the key to the on position and release the accelerator and turn off the key. just depends on the model.
Wonder wonder .... when check engine light on and said solenoid is bad that need to replace it but like I ignoring the problem ...now it not driving cuz transmission problems . The major problem was I didn’t replace it right ?? And someone said I need to rebuild whole transmission
Ok guys, your intention is good, but you have to practice how to make videos. It will help a lot, if you Write first a small "script" on what do you want to show, & the way you are goin to show it.
Hi I need your help ...my f30 gearbox get water...the gearbox cooler broke so coolent lick into the gearbox...I removed the gearbox clean it up...now I have this fault code 420641: Parking lock defectively engaged...please help me please

Thinks man for that video
it's really help me a lot.
I thought the solenoid should be checked just by a battery.but now I get it will.:-)
Thank you!
your the best i really learn a lot in new things i need one of those or just make one you give me new ideas thanks
+Oneil Campbell Thank you!
can check soloneid with scaltol?
Yes, you can turn it on and off electrically, but that does not mean it works mechanically/hydraulically. Thanks for your feedback.
Depending on the type of switch you are testing. They are what we call variable apply or on off. Variable apply switches cannot be tested using this method.
Hi is the valve body testing tool available on open market .great video by the way.
Yes, The tool used in the video is part part number J-44246, it is available from SPX at gmtoolsandequipment.com/en-US/Pages/ItemDetail.aspx?SKU=J-44246

Hello great video, thanks for posting. Do you think the block J-44246 unit would be compatible with Toyota/Lexus shift solenoids? Thanks again. Jacob
No, I have tried. Thanks for the feedback!

Can this cause hard shifting at times? My Buick Lucerne has been doing that.
Craig Bryant Yes
Thanks Gregory. I'll get it checked out
Great video, How can I find what's are the resisting? For the solenoid transmission for 06 Mazda 3 2.0 Thank you in advance.
what pressure should shop air be regulated to when testing tcc/shift solenoids?
46re seems to have dual ports on it - anyway I can contact you regarding airflow for testing purposes?
So how much is this
Air tool? And I assume gm dealer is where I can buy this? I need this in my life. I Had a saturn come in the shop that needed new 1-2 shift solenoid to be replaced. Would have made bench testing really easy with the air.
On this demo why can't you use a VOM and power the control winding to see if you have continuity on the output contacts?
+Don G. Hi, the control winding on these solenoids only creates a magnetic field. The field pulls or pushes on a hydraulic valve or check-ball to open or close a hydraulic passage. There are no contacts to check. Winding continuity is only one of the three functions to test on these solenoids. Thanks for your feedback!
thank you sir
Thank you!
I gave your videyo a like, how about next time we get a birds eye view. That would have been pretty neat.
what size fuse did you use on the power cable?
The tool comes with a bag of different sized fuses. You must match the fuse to the circuit you are testing. I was using a 20 A fuse in that video.
Can a malfunctioning pressure Solenoid valve jeopardise the mechanical integrity of the whole transmission....And if its replaced, well thats the entire valve body, would that be a sign that I must start preparing for a new transmission

Hi are the wires fused?? I see a little tiny square on the other end of the wire , is that the fuse??
Yes, a blade type fuse holder
WeberAuto did you use 10amp fuse?
@@velocity800 I do not remember, but it should not be higher than the fuse protecting that circuit in the vehicle.
Hi

thank for good work pls i have 406 al4 auto transmission solenoid valve testing i saw 10.9 in your video my is 3.7 is the sensor bad or not thanks pls feed me back
would the EPC solenoid make the same clicking noise as the other solenoids??
+changomonkey86 Good question! No, they may or may not click since they are pulse width modulated, it depends upon their design. This test is for on-off solenoids. Thanks for watching.

You seem very knowledgeable on transmissions so if u don't mind I am having this trouble code on three different Korean cars -relatives cars- 2 Hyundai and 1 KIA all with automatic transmissions.
the code is

Are the solenoids voltage specific or does positive or negative not matter? Thx
What about Resistance testing, Is it a foolproof health check despite it doesn't leak? What do you think about a solenoid in it's natural habitat, is it prone to intermittent failures due to heat and dynamic fluid loading?
Thank you very much for enriching our minds
Thank you. Resistance testing with a traditional multi-meter is useless unless there is an open circuit.
All the forward gears are fine and smooth no whines knocks etc just won't go into reverse
What is the psi you are testing at?
90 psi is the recommended maximum pressure since it mimics the actual pressure at the solenoids in the transmission. Have a good day!
Thanks for the prompt response!!!
is it possible that the shift solenoid ohms resistance tests good but the solenoid still operates bad?
Yes, I tried to demonstrate that in the video.
What is the part number for the tool?
I think I put it in the video description. Thanks for watching
what test is better, the battery test or the multimeter test, or i need to do both to get to the conclusion , god ones and bad ones
Battery test is better. Multimeter only checks the resistance of the coil of wire in the solenoid. Best wishes.
Hi , I was getting a 20 ohm resistance but did not get around to a test with voltage as i wanted your reply. Thank you for getting back to me !
I will try that tomorrow after work but it is in tranny in car so i might be able to hear the click but wouldnt know how the seals are in each. You never heard of 2 alligator clips and 12 v battery 😂...
I have a question can you test a solenoid with just two wires to a battery cuz I checked to them you could barely hear click but the other three you can hear a loud click what does that mean
Some solenoid types are just louder than others. Two identical solenoids should sound the same.
What psi are you running your air?
90 psi
Hello.
By Multimeter, I've measured my solenoid valve (cvt transmission) for Nissan micra v16, and put the read pointer to multimeter on the unit Ohm appeared result 12.7 ohm. Does it need to replacement or not?
Tank you.
I do not have the specification for that solenoid, but it does not sound like a problem.
No they constantly coming on and off as you drive. Now as an example if you drive 500 miles without stopping and your number 1 shift solenoid is on in over drive then it is on for 500 miles. Make sense? Hope this helps.
so how can I tell if it's my control module or a solenoid without taking anything off the car first...??
Use a scan tool to check for trouble codes.
I have scanned it and replaced what the scanner said but still have the same problem
Did you ever use the tester on a Ford solenoid? And if so, did the tester work?
What’s it mean when you get 0.01 on a lot of them.
Will this method work on PWM solenoids?
No
Remarkable!
Regards.
Hi, it depends on the transmission model. What year, make, and model of vehicle?
It is a 2015 Audi Q7 3.0 TDI with a 8 speed tiptronic gearbox.
probably a lot of transmission problems can be solved with these solenoids, and they're easy to access, so a non-transmission mechanic would feel comfortable working on them ...
True, Thanks for your feedback!
Yeah but there like 80 dollars
$80 or $1500 for a transmission replacement
thankss for you can you help me to give me the address for the company to buy tester like this you test the solenoid in the video
The tool used in the video is part number J-44246, it is available from GM Tools at gmtoolsandequipment.com
When a selonoid goes out will it throw a code or no? Prolly not thats why your testing them..?
They can set a code, but sometimes not.
I have a 2001 dodge ram 5.2 2wd auto that won't go into reverse any ideas sir ?
+moses Willis Sounds like a reverse band issue. Must have someone look inside to determine the cause. Thanks for watching!
Is there a minimum psi level that could be a standard level or for that matter a maximum?
90 psi max, 50 min
WeberAuto thank you
Shift solenoids are on or off. Torque converter clutch solenoids are PWM. As are some others.
Manual gearbox have solenoid or no?
Not usually, some seven speeds to to skip gears on a downshift
WeberAuto is solenoid location on gear box?
do all auto transmission have a solenoid? I am trying to troubleshoot my 68'Dodge D200 3pd automatic.
dlynes they used a mechanical system up till the 80s are probably the 90s...you had a valve body
How can I test a EPC solenoid for a L604e transmission?
I am not familiar with testing that model, best wishes
Thank You.
Just did with only 2 jumper wires and 9volt battery, and blew thru... Unfortunately they were both good
What he is not telling you is that even if the solenoid is controlling the air pressure in this little test, if doesn't mean its good. The solenoid can seem good initially but when in use for a while as it heats up it can develop an internal short or open circuit making it useless just like fuel injector.
can i use a car battery to do this test?
Yes

Can a malfunctioning pressure Solenoid valve jeopardise the mechanical integrity of the whole transmission....And if its replaced, well thats the entire valve body, would that be a sign that I must start preparing for a new transmission
I have a p0746 solenoid, stuck off. What solenoid would that be?
