i remember how my grandmother kept her stockings up, these were nylon or silk, she pulled them up to the height she wanted folded the top of the stocking over then took a penny added the penny to the fold, twisted stocking/penny as tight as she needed an slipped the stocking/penny in behind the stocking. hard to describe but cool to watch.
@@feezlfuzzl564 Yup! The penny acts like a wing nut on a bolt, letting you twist a very small amount of material to get it tensioned correctly. To keep it from coming undone, you have to keep the twists in, so tucking the penny back into the tight stocking means that "wing nut" can't spin freely and the tension remains.
I wear historical clothing daily, which means stockings too, and keeping them up has definitely been the biggest challenge the past couple of years. So thank you for making this video! It’ll be useful to many many people. Ribbon garters have personally never worked for me, they just fall off my leg, so for 18th century, long before clip garters, I actually made a pair of small leather belts that go around the upper calf or lower thigh, similar to some of the garters that existed for men during the century. Just wanted to put that out there in case anyone has the same problem with ribbons not working and needs a different solution 😊 On another note, do you think the hole is potentially because of clothes moths? This is their mating season and so they’re all over at the moment.
I have to say, the undressing videos are fascinating from a historical perspective! They likely weren’t intended to be historically relevant but it’s a fantastic resource to see all the layers and how they were worn. The Victorians produced a number of ‘naughty’ images and videos… there’s some truly *creative* things out there- a steampunk convention I attend runs a late night 18+ Victorian ‘adult images’ panel :)
The garters attached to the corset work best when used with "combinations," which eliminates the need to tuck the chemise into the split drawers, as both garments are represented in the combination. I hate wearing my drawers on the outside of my corset and chemise, as you mentioned, too much bulk. I find it also creates problems trying to use the "necessary," especially when in a hurry on the short breaks we get while interpreting at historic sites. Thank you for the great video. I would never have thought to check the "naughty" images for hints, but it makes so much sense! Go where the information is! Good job!
For modern knickers worn over the course of the day (rather than just for a photoshoot), it's very important what order you put on garters, because one way (the way you see in most lingerie ads and movies) the knickers can't be pulled down to use the restroom! stockings --> corset or garterbelt --> garters --> then knickers! Your crochet garters are lovely! Love the lace on the top of the white stockings as well!
For us curvy-legged people you need at least 4 clip-on garters, front and side, sometimes also in the back. And as already mentioned, ribbon garters work best (for curvy legs) below knee and with the cuff of the socks folded over them.
How creative to look at 'naughty' films in order to discover how to wear your underwear properly!! Until I watched your video I had forgotten that my grandmother used clip garters. For the most part hers were sewn onto her corset.
Both of these garter styles have been around at least since the medieval ages but the vertical garters were mostly used by men to hold up their hose by tying them to a belt worn around their waist by means of ribbons.
Daughter and I cosplay a lot, as well as myself historybounding, and we always have the problem of them falling down, so thank you for this. Would love a link to see the rest of those undressing videos if you can too.
Nice editing with the progress of the crochet garters. Very NFB (National Film Board, Canada - very Norman McLaren). The garters turned out great. Well done. - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown
Personal this is one instance I’d probably not worry about historical accuracy and go with a garter belt under everything so you get the superior hold without the bunching
oooh those rosy garters are so pretty! I have leather garters that buckle at the sides for my 18th c stockings (not sure how accurate they are, but I got them at a reenactment) that hold up my stockings really well but also can be uncomfortable on my calves.
I appreciate this video. I am FINALLY finishing up your petticoat knit pattern that I bought from Etsy a couple years ago. I am hoping to knit some tube stockings and to make garters to go with them! Your videos are always so cozy and informational. ❤
I knitted a couple of pairs of garters (from a Lady Godey's, if I'm remembering correctly), one was a plain garter knit with a loop on the end to thread the garter through and tie off, the other was stockinette but you alternated every 5 rows to give it some spring and an interesting texture (those ones also have a plain garter loop at on end so you can thread the garter through for tying off). They work really well. I've worn them for several years now at events and just around home doing farm work and house work and they hold my stockings up really well.
I can't wait for the video on your cotton stockings! I'm just getting into sock knitting, and I like knitting with cotton, so I'm excited to see what of your experience might inspire me! I'm getting close to the end of my current project, but also in the process of moving, so I think your next video will be just in time for me to figure out my next piece...
I hope that hole wasn't caused by the clip-on garters! But it does seem likely. The tie on ones are so much prettier though :) The white stockings look like such a fine gauge, no wonder you needed breaks!
They look great! I love the lace cuff on the white stockings! If your garters or stockings keep moving on you, you can cuff the stocking over the garter. Also, Sock Dreams has a ton of elastic garters in a bunch of styles and sizes (yes, 22" thighs and over!).
I would like to know the pros/cons of using a wool-silk blend fabric for your stockings? How does the fabric react to moisture, hot weather, cold weather, how breathable is it on the skin? Thanks.
I wear stays and chemise every day and I have been experimenting with adding drawers and also found the bunching of fabric annoying. I've changed to having quite a short chemise under my stays, adding all my layers and then my fancy longer chemise over everything.
I wonder if anyone ever put a buttonhole (to thread the garter through) or a slit/split (to go "around" the garter) in their drawers/chemise to counteract the bunching
Cant you just put buttons on the inside of the top of each of your stocking, and tie a loop of string from corset to around button? Seems simple to me. I dunno
The clips look uncomfortable against your leg-skin, and they stretch the stockings in a way that the crocheted garters do not. If it's all the same to you, I think the crocheted ones will not wear out your stockings as fast.

So like wrapping a hair towel on, clever!
@@Musicandlyrics2400 I thought that is how it was done until I was a teen
The penny helps?
Wow!!!!

a touch of flame at the ends of your ribbons should keep them from fraying. super creative to look at adult videos for clues, well done!
Those crochet garters look SO CUTE with the white stockings!

Reaction to hole's discovery = priceless.

Oooh the sneak peak of those stockings at the end! The white and the red together is gorgeous 😍
I can't wait to share more of them, thank you!

Thank you so much! It was a lot of fun to make and film the garters!
Very cool! Where did you find the old film clips? I love the way they show how people moved in corsets

Hi,your white stockings and garters look lovely, and it explains why garter belt was so named.💖

Oooh I love how the crochet garters look with your new stockings! They are beautiful and I can't wait to see next weeks video!

Hello! I'm here for the historical knitting but your videos are top shelf! They are beautifully filmed and presented. Thank you for sharing!

Oh I did also make that coffee sock , and it works great!
Wow, nice work with the stop motion!
I love the stockings. I'm not a knitter, great job! I do crochet. so the garters are wonderful! your videos are great
Your white cottons stockings are sooo beautiful! I can't wait to see your next video! So exciting!!!
Such a cool experiment
Awesome vid thank creating and sharing beautiful 🤩
Wow! Thanks! And your sweater is beautiful. Thank you for the pattern links!
I always get so excited when I get a notification for one of your videos!!
Thank you for this wonderful video :)
Glad you enjoyed it!
Beautiful work, as always.
what a fascinating subject

Im just watching this because I want to see which one holds up the best because I wear garters but I’ve never tried ribbons.
The bunching of the fabric would bother me, I think. But I hate even having to wear a tank top under a shirt, plus it’s always hot here.
You knit the stockings yourself? Did you do a video?
The editing on the crochet garter segment is dynamite!!
Would love to know the source to the historical undressing videos!!
I'm curious, would one wear only one after per stocking? I would think it more comfortable to wear one in the front, and one in the rear.
What do you mean by elastic? I thought that was a later invention :o!
Cant you just put buttons on the inside of the top of each of your stocking, and tie a loop of string from corset to around button? Seems simple to me. I dunno
(concerned face) "...naughty videos?"
