Graham Potter’s West Ham United era is off to a rocky start. A 2-0 defeat to Crystal Palace at the London Stadium has highlighted the massive challenge facing the new boss.
With a depleted, ageing squad and an ongoing injury crisis, Potter has inherited a team lacking creativity and struggling for goals. Despite some defensive improvements, West Ham managed just three shots on target across their last two home games.
Has Potter bitten off more than he can chew? Why was Carlos Soler dropped? And can he turn things around before it’s too late?
Join us as we break down the issues facing West Ham and the decisions Potter must make to get the Hammers back on track.

Potter in a short time has done what I feel we needed.
Youth players brought into the team. Stopped us letting mass goals. We are keeping the ball better in the defensive and middle 3rd. The issue was that we had no one running behind the palace defence which allowed them to squeeze the space in the middle 3rd. We need a striker, Bowen and Summerville and a mobile quick central midfielder box to box.
Yes, a real #8
Dissapointed response from our fanbase in general (not aimed at you Gonzo). Beating Fulham was a glimpse into what Potter can clearly do with a depleted squad. He isn't going to be able to get scraps to win games all the time! There is clearly a clear-out needed, and Potter MUST be backed. That includes Timmy playing ball and not getting into the mud with yet another manager.. he must be on side and everyone (including Sully) must be on the same wavelength. This includes the fans, do not start acting like Spuds.
I posted exactly this on Geo's vid this morning;
Our season is pretty much done, so Potter quite rightly is looking at what he's got with the future in mind.
There'll be a mass exodus in the summer but I do believe we need to concentrate on the future rather than the here and now.
Sullivan's carpe diem approach is holding us back big time.
Honestly I think we all need to accept the fact this squad is going to get turned over. We arent close to Europe, and players like Kudus are going to be gone in the Summer. I think spending a bunch of cash to try and keep this squad going is just kicking the can down the road.
I agree with you, but it's pretty shocking. We bought a new XI in the summer and spent £120m (plus got Wes Fodderingham & Guido Rodrigues on frees), and yet we need to start again less than 6 months later.
Correct mate. The very example of mismanagement. Simple example, Wolves dictated that we spend £40m. on Kilman. We just followed suit.@kiriakoz
Sullivan. @@kiriakoz
The sooner Kudus finds a new home the better, if we can sell him and bring 2 Quality players the better, and he’s just for starters
Agreed@@johnmurdoch1637
Hi Gonzo. I am really glad you made that point about not passing to Orford.I went to the game yesterday, and that was the point that really wound me up when they didn't pass to him.I was up screaming because it really got to me. On a more positive note it was great to see the 2 youngsters on the pitch together but disappointed with our lack of threat. The crowd were trying to get behind the team but they just couldn't respond with anything .
100% agree. Not just Orford. I was getting so would up seeing Scarles in tons of space on the left and Kilman repeatedly ignoring him to pass to another defender or back to the keeper when we were chasing the game and needed to progress up the pitch. That needs to stop!
I'd agree that Scarles should be getting more minutes, but not necessarily starting every game. However, Orford doesn't look ready to step up yet. Maybe give him 5 mins here or there at the end of games we are winning to gently introduce him to top flight games. Instead of chucking him in a poor team and then crushing any talent he may have.
Regarding Mavropanos & Kilman not passing to Orford - as Brian Clough once fanously said "Young man, give the ball to that other young man because he's a better player than you," ⚒
Potter will come good, it's just going to take a lot of patience - and the right spending... ⚒
Get ahead of the crowd and try to get Angel Gomes now! We need more creativity in midfield
Alvarez Soucek and Rodriguez has to be slowest midfield in the league
completed passes in the game against Crystal Palace
Soucek - 36 - 90 mins
Alvarez - 34 - 90 mins
Rodriguez - 19 - 45 Mins
Orford - 29 - 35 Mins
It's the same with carrying the ball
Soucek - 16 - 90 mins
Alvarez - 20 - 90 mins
Rodriguez - 10 - 45 mins
Orford - 15 - 35 mins
Why not just start Orford I'm sure the baptism of fire would be welcomed instead of waiting for soucek and Alvarez to change the way they play
I'm already looking forward to next season!
Unfortunately the new manager has inherited a set of players who cannot play together, most are not up for the fight required in the Premier league and or don't get what playing for the badge means. Complete rebuild needed. Sullivan and Steidten got a lot to answer for. This season is now about getting enough points so we aren't relegated and allowing potter time to start the rebuilding process.
This is clearly going to take some time Gonzo. If any of us need to see the benefits of Patience just look at what Forest are doing this season after just about avoiding relegation last year. Would really like to see a long term project at West Ham. This season will be about avoiding relegation. ⚒
I watched the game at 38,000 feet on an Etihad flight (strangest place I ever watched) and had to moderate my reactions. It was so enlightening to have watched the Bournemouth game before and Arsenal after. The contrast was so striking and showed how fare we have to go to be competitive with these teams. The problem I think is that if we are not active in the current window the rest of the Season is wasted time. I think we need at 4 or 5 to get some legs in every department.
we got lucky against Fulham, and against palace as soon as the goal went in game was over.we cant wait until the summer for new players and im sure potter knows the players he needs.
The morale in the squad was beaten into the ground and players haven't played well because of that Potter needs time to improve that we definitely need to look ahead and get some new players in I watched the cup game against Villa even though we lost I think Scarles was amazing he looked hungry like he wanted to play
This is worse than 1986/87 when we did not kick on because we spent no money. Post conference league win we did not move on we drifted with DM but unlike 87 we have spent a shed load and got worse. Had an opportunity for a top manager with a war chest. Now a disaster we have to replace in all areas including GK
Apart from the kids Bowen Summerville Wan Bassaka I won’t be upset if the rest went massive summer ahead have to ship out the dead wood first! But in Potter I trust ⚒️
It was obvious we were gonna get beat yesterday! We never have any consistency, and the squad just isn't right in my opinion. I don't think we'll go down, but I do still believe we need to strengthen this transfer window because the higher we finish, the more money we get from the league so it is important to keep on pushing. What frustrates me is that we can never go on a winning streak, why can't we just win 3 or 4 on the bounce for once 😤
I honestly think as crap as it is this season is an opportunity to reset, i beieve kudus is off in the summer i can see one or two other players being unavailable or sold in the summer as well so i would loan a striker or even better look to the youth to get us through this tough period. Then in the summer with the examination of the squad and youth, make careful decisions on players contracts that are up for renewal aswell as the youth that will ve apart of the squad, start making dicisions for the long term, i also think we should go out a sign tons in the summer quality over quantity. However this is west ham and nothing like this is going to happen 😂
Spot on.
Sorting the defence starts in the middle of the pitch, we are so slow and open in the centre midfield area, teams are just able to wonder straight through and get at our fragile defence, yes we need a central defensive partnership but we can’t always be relying on the last line of defence.
Kudus actually had one his best games in recent weeks despite being constantly surrounded by 3 players. Passed the ball in a timely manner too.
I still think we should go after the Ipswich forward Delap, scoring in a poor team, they look to be going down.
I feel sure that Potter was under no illusions that the squad he was going to inherit was old and slow and would need an overhaul to be able to play his style of football. I also feel sure that he would have sought assurances from Sullivan that he would be able to get players in, in January. Time is running out
Potter said after the game yesterday that Soler felt his hamstring before the game hence not starting him. So, in essence, that's 3 hamstring issues in 2 games (Fullkrug, Summerville and Soler). That's a lot. Is it down to training? warm up? Something must have changed and needs looking at
I was there yesterday and we were awful and offered nothing going forward. Our only chances would be from AWB and Kudus down thr right and Palace snuffed both them out easily. Our lack of quality and options to change things from the bench due to squad size is ridiculous
I said this on Geos video that Id like to see us get to Leaugue security as soon as possible. Our season is realistically over so the best outcome and think that would excite me this year is seeing our youth being developed. 4 or 5 games at the end of the season where we can really use them and give them serious minutes
This is 100% on Steidten and Sullivan. The players we bought last summer were by and large shocking. We are slow, ponderous and fucking old. We need speed and youth injected to this dad's army team. Steidten will be sacked in the summer and Ashworth will come in
What makes you think dwarf will let ashworth do his job . He's blocked steitden and Newman from doing it properly . At some point kretinsky is going to trigger the buyout clause and he won't let steitden go no chance whatsoever. Sullivans the issue.
😂
Be nice to know who’s making what call and they need to own up to it and say they made a mistake, Steidens first transfer window with us was brilliant I don’t see how he goes from that to spending £25m on a Brazilian kid who’s playing in the U23’s, feel like divvy Dave has got he’s hands on things as usual
8 million on Lopetegui and his staff. 40 million on Killman. That’s nearly 50 million wasted by Sullivan. 27 million on Fullkrug, 25 on Guilherme. That’s nearly 100 million wasted in less than 6 months.. We are still a circus. Look at Forest, Brighton, Fulham, Brentford. Spent no where near that and are ten times the team we are.
Killman will come good, he was good against palace
Kilman isnt a waste
@ He can’t defend any better than Mavro that cost 15 million. We paid well over the odds for him. Even the Wolves fans said that at the time
He is@@Jordan-dp5ms
@@BurgundyBag66what match were you watching lol 😂
Reset button needs pushing. Right before Potter took over I said on here that whoever the next guy is he'd have his work cut out...and so it's proving but in we trust Potter trust, don't we! Patience - COYI ⚒️⚒️⚒️⚒️
now Sullivan is in charge of transfers its worrying is he going to back him, this team is so slow we need a new goalkeeper defenders midfielders striker
Sully would always leave January signings until the last few days of the window
Well its not as if steidten has done any better.....signings have been sh*t under steidtens watch!
A whole new team basically
No problem if we start seeing some improvements after a rebuild. But it's not going to be easy for Potter, when you can't see to many inspirational figures around to help.
Surely the only way forward is to get some new blood in & hope it changes the mood around the place. But experiences tell's us, the biggest problem will be facing the fans
lack of patience. We're not known for our support nowdays especially when hoovering over the relegation zone. And can you imagine the reaction if Everton start doing well!
To me our team looks like random puzzle pieces put into a box. Potter needs time and to move some of these players on. Even if it’s a reduced cost.
Kudus had no support to fend off two or three player’s who immediately surrounded him, another attacker would have helped this, but we just didn’t have anyone. And although Ings did a lot of closing down, it was still miles off and didn’t offer that option for a defender to worry about.
We don’t have many options up front, and now Paqueta received a knock in the warm up, bad enough to contemplate missing that game, another attacking threat that’s gone missing.
The whole argument against keeping Lop was that we’d be ‘writing off the season’ but now we’re hearing ‘Potter will start to come good in the summer’ so what was the point in sacking Lop if we’re ‘writing off the season’ either way?
First game I went to came to England from America to watch this. Impressed with youth, though I would say the stadium was shocking. No noise what so ever absolutely ridiculous no matter how poor your team is playing I was shocked by the lack of effort from the fans to back our players. Don’t get me wrong the team was shit, utter shit, but this is no excuse from the fans. I thought we were massive, only thing massive about us is our belly’s.
Fucking disgrace tbh, no atmosphere no nothing dissapointed from the lot of our club and fellow “supporters”
@@drefairchild2889 I gave up my season ticket after having one for 35 years
Horrendous stadium and atmosphere
@ yah just disappointed love west ham through and through but just wanted to see more from the fans and the players. If we ever make it to Europe again that’s a game I’d definitely like to watch.
Totally agree
Bellies*
And your spelling is massively shit it would seem.
I agree. Atmosphere is awful. The excuse of stadium can't keep being used. Nor can the excuse they need something to cheer for!
Hi gonzo. I think what potter tried to do against palce was to stifel the mid field and slow the opposition down 👍⚒️⚒️
Can't agree with you and Geo on any of this Gonzo. Our season was already over when Potter took over. With only 23 points from 20 games we had no chance of making Europe - you need 60 points. From 18 games? Not possible. Equally we are not getting relegated. There has never been a better time to have an injury crisis to be honest. He will be judged now on 3 things: 1. get the team playing attractive football. 2. Blood some of the youngsters. 3 Avoid any more batterings. He's got 16 games left to do that and on point 2 he is already ahead of the curve.
Potters final this season will be against Moyes’ Everton
We'd never live it down if Everton turn us over 🤯
I think it's a case of getting through this season...great that Potter is giving youth a chance ...but WE the fans have to understand the next few months are going to be painful.
Still the same problems. It’s still the same players. We do look better and organised. We have 6 attacking players in the squad.4 are injured. Ings is one of those. Just struggling. We can probably limp to the end of the season
Numerous times a pass was on to spread the play or open Palace up but we took far too long, players either not skilled to do it or in the case of Kudus just bloody hogging the ball… quick sharp passing is needed and our midfielders just aren’t up to it. More speed, more creativity, more energy and more youth…simple eh!!⚒️
Minimum we need to loan a Striker to help Summerville , Paqueta , Kudus . Bowen eventually . They had three round Kudus as soon as he touched the ball they stuck to him like shit to a blanket . There was no attack Palace played us at the perfect time . End of the day if money only takes us to one player . Would that be legs in midfield or Striker . We are dealing with Sullivan here he needs to back Potter get both .
Dont agree,i think potter knows exactly what he has on his hands, the fanbase needs patience,we are decimated regarding injuries.
So disappointing with that first goal. Why is kilman backing off. He should have gone in and tried to make a tackle even if it meant giving away a free kick. Dont want to see mavropanos in a west ham shirt again. Not good enough
Couldn't possibly agree more
Kilman is crap no pace lacks aggression we had our pants pulled down by wolves
You can’t polish a turd the reality of where we are as a team and how much work needs to be done is now apparent to Potter.
Mask and gloves are advised lol 😂😂😂
We need to accept that Europe is a distant dream and premier league survival is the only thing that matters now. Potter will need the rest of the season to decide who stays and who goes. We need at least 2-3 new faces a centre back that can defend a midfielder that can run slightly faster than what we have and a forward who can maybe score goals and take some of the pressure off the rest of the team. Had a feeling we would fall flat on our face against Palace . Villa Chelsea and Arsenal away with Brentford at home our next 4 games we could be in big trouble by the end of these if reinforcements ain’t forth coming 🤷🏻
Yesterday the players were fatigued from the Villa and Fulham games they looked leggy from the start of the game
I believe Solar Scarles Summerville and a few of the academy boys will improve over the course of the season along with Bowen Soucek and Wanbasaka we have the basics of a good squad, the rest look like they want to be somewhere else
While l agree with everything you say about this Hammers team, if you & most fans can see what is needed surely GP with all his knowledge and experience knows as well, he watched them loose to the Foxes before he signed up for the job, If he's surprised maybe he fell asleep at King Power Stadium!
The line up was to prevent a hiding.....Palace have pace pace and more pace....
Rome wasn’t built in a day- just glad Potters building it and not JLo anymore. We’re unlucky with all the injuries at the mo but we still had a weak squad. Watching live yesterday, what I’d give for some creativity from Benrahma or Fornals again.
I think our team at the end of the season will be unrecognisable to the one we put out against palace. Bowen, Summerville, Scarles, Orford, Casey,Areola, Fullkrug, Todibo. That squad under Potter will be firing I am very open to the idea of Earthy coming back, some players aren’t meant for loans and he hasn’t been great for Bristol
Soler felt his hamstring last game so not sure what other choice of team he could put out. Injuries and poor squad depth is killing us I think.
It's not like Lop where he said he could, but was unable to bring attacking football, or at least exciting stuff. This is more of an issue of having a system, or a few to choose from, with an absence of sustainable options. Hope somehow we can bring in talent, but not entirely rely on youth as an excuse for swerving doing business in the transfers. We need a whole new backup and starters, striker, mf, defense, even after Bowen, Jimmy, and God knows when with Fulkrug. Problem is how will we be able to under Sullivan's subjugation of the transfer decision-making? And he can't stand Potter either. Hope it somehow sorts out, or Potter works something from the loss.
I thought the move to this stadium was supposed to propell us to the next level and compete with the best at transfers?
What position does stadium play? Maybe he could play striker? 🤣
@akwamarsunzal do you not get my point??
I wish I had as much confidence regards relegation
Tough run of games coming up.
I won’t feel we’re safe until we are
Our creativity is not helped with the drop in form of Kudus. This in itself is an enigma that Potter needs to address.
I think it's a shame that the young striker ajala is so young but I hope we can see abit of swyer, can't be any worse
Nice reference to the gospel reading appointed for today. Turning water into wine! Lots of good things happening, hopefully there is promise with Potter in the future.
Sullivan has screwed up big time. Chose JL which effectively forced us to sign Kilman for £40m. Probably the person who would not go the extra mile for Duran. Players like Alvarez and Kudus get worse and Aguerd and JWP shipped out. Steidten not without blame. Too much money spent on Fulkrug and Guilherme. But we are also unlucky with all our forwards injured at same time
Poor starting 11. Having Cresswell, Mavropanos, Rodrigues and Alvarez in the same team is never going to end well. Potter should know that by now. If not he needs to catch up quickly on the videos of our previous performances.
Whoever was/is responsible for assembling this squad over the past couple of seasons needs to be removed from employment in football.
Must go-Mavrapanos, Cresswell, Rodriguez, Ings, Coufal.
Should go-Fabianski/Areola(keep 1 as reserve), Kilman, Paqueta, Kudus.
Aim-Get through this season, sack fitness/conditioning team, savage pre season fitness/conditioning routine to get this squad able to compete in terms of fitness, physicality, speed and movement
Potter has the same problem as Moyes had when he took over from Pellagrini , nothing has changed, let’s hope Mr Potter can get his recruitment man in from Chelsea
wouldn't mind Earthy being called back
All you can do now is panic buy and then we are in bigger trouble in the summer
I think the issue has been recruitment. Mavropanos was an absolute disaster at Arsenal, so why do we sign him? Better yet, why do we start him over Todibo?
First because Tobido fell out with loppy, currently because he’s not fit.
Because todibo isn't fit !
@ but when he has been, we haven’t started him
@@theharknetts Yeah, that was probably something to do with Mav not swinging at the Manager in the dressing room?
Am I the only that thinks Wan-Bissaka was dreadful yesterday? So many loose passes, too often jogging when he should have been running and beaten too many times on the edge of the area. He’s been excellent in several games but yesterday his attitude and work rate stunk the place out
Seems to be forever that I have been warning about what we were headed for, 3 years I suspect and there’s no quick fix sadly. 8 players in Summer rushed of course so errors were made surprise, surprise but how many players can we rely upon longer term from the Moyes era? 2, 3 no more in all honesty I can only think of Bowen and yep oh the irony Soucek. Who else? Alvarez, Kudus were once but again like Kudus maybe minds like Paqueta are elsewhere let’s be honest even if Paqueta and Alvarez have picked up a bit for now in a few games but to be relied upon?. A few from Summer maybe Kilman and Summerville though still much to prove. Trouble is the long decline in the positivity in the squad that has deteriorated unaddressed since Moyes second season and what propelled us prior to that decline rather than innate squad quality, debilitates even decent players when you throw them into the mix. You need young hungry players but we went for ‘safe’ established players like Rodriguez and Soler who had money in mind and are not cut out for the Premiership or our circumstances. So all a mess of our own long term making and Potter indeed any Manager, will struggle to resolve.
We need to be smarter with our recruitment. Stop wasting money on signing players for their status and focus on signing players that play the manager's way in order to get wins. No matter who they are. Teams like Bournemouth, Fulham, and Forest have shown this. Selling Guilherme would be unfortunate as he's young, but if we can get anything close to our money back, then needs must. Same with Guido, as he's only just arrived here. If I were Potter, I would go for two of his old Brighton players in Adam Webster and Jakub Moder. Webster is an experienced CB who can play in a back 3 or back 4 and brings leadership, which we've lost and are desperately in need of. Moder is a technical CM who can play as a 6 and as an 8. Both wouldn't break the bank, and we'd have change for a striker on loan and maybe even a JWP who looks to be on his way out of Southampton. There are good signings out there to be made this month with the right approach
No mention of how bad Fabiansky has been. 2 ball's straight past him 1 penalty when the ball was going out and a shot in the near post in the last two games. We need to change him.
Awful yesterday. Palace did a job on us without looking anything special. We need a striker. A false 9 needs the technical skill City have. We haven't.
He said that Soler had a problem and that’s why he didn’t start
We should get Richarlison in. Found the back of the net today, he’s hugely out of favor at Spurs, but he’s an absolute pest for opposing defenses. 27 years old, he should be hitting his prime years now
He’s going to Everton
We need to get players in who have got lightning pace so we can scare the crap out of our opponents when going forward we need pace pace pace.
No chance he’s going to be happy with what he’s got. No chance we’re bringing a permanent signing of merit in now. And while Tobido will be new to Potter, he doesn’t make our backline that much better. It’s going to be slog til the end of the season, but we need to expect that and be relatively patient. Graham can’t really do his work until the season‘s over. In the meantime, he has to work with what he’s got. Hopefully, he can find the set up that steadies the ship.
One problem with just getting by till the end of the season maybe finishing bottom 6 is when you start trying to recruit better players they say no European football ? relegation candidates ? No thank you. 😢
Moyes left us in the shit . Sullivan appointed the wrong manager to rebuild in loppy. I believe we have the right manager now but it’s going to take a long time to sort this mess . We need to be patient. I hate Sullivan so much
Let face the facts some of the players are too old too slow and not good enough....we are struggling at the back in midfield and up front ..major surgery is needed in the summer and hopefully Potter will get a few transfer windows to bring in the players he wants to replace the ineffective players we have
Paqueta got injured in the wram up
No way he's happy with the player's that he's got. He was diplomatically say that he isn't being given any.
Is it me or does WHU squad seem to need rebuilds more frequently than an F1 race engine?
Rebuilds and reset buttons seem to be in perpetual motion at our place.
Should’ve started Sesko or Vlahovic
According to sky sports news we have made a £57m bid for duran plus bonuses
I dont get why potter took the job. Why would anyone trust working for the dwarf!
He os the biggest problem our club has!
How we are not in the relegation zone this season is baffling. We are a terrible team.
Fortunately it's a league full of terrible teams.
I hope we can get gomes and David off Lille
Yeah shame we didn't get Amorin or Postacoglou
Ha Ha Ha!
Not turned our to be brilliant so far.
Apart from The lack of creativity, An aging squad , no legs in midfield, no striker, and Sullivan as boss
What have the Roman's done for us?
Let’s be honest if earthy can’t do it for Bristol. He can’t do it in the prem. sorry.
Hang you said on a earlier video a while back we have a good squad it was the managers fault lol
Scarles is a way better player than Cresswell
This season is over - we need to boot out and bring in several players
Surely sullivan must sit in his l.s seat and think omg some of the players ive given the go ahead money wise to get are pants
There seems to be a really strange opinion going around at the moment that yesterday was everyone's fault except Potter. The reality is Potter was the one that chose that god awful lineup and formation, no one else, Potter. Yes he is working with injuries and dross however he could have helped himself massively yesterday by not changing the team that played Fulham and going with a line yp that would have had Lopetegui stroking himself in the toilets. That was the worst line up and formation he could have chosen yesterday and although I'm happy to give him all the time in the world, that line up yesterday was not acceptable under Lopetegui and it's not acceptable under Potter.
The goals weren't potter's fault. A boring 0-0 would've been fine
We'll lose the next two as well ( away to Chelsea and villa). That'll be 6 defeats from 8. We'd better not dawdle blindly into a relegation scrap.
'When Potter first got here'? He's been here for 2 weeks! This squad would fail even if we had God as the head coach. It has been allowed to deliver piss poor performances by Lope, and Moyes in his last season. I'm giving GP all the time he needs. It's ridiculous to criticise. Lower any expectations for now. GP has one hell of a job to get a tune out of these unfit players. It's a slow methodical process that will take patience & time.
He could get away with what we had it depends on how long the injured players out
Only team doing well press and have pace . This pass the ball all day long football just doesn't work these days only endless pressing and pace on the counter
Sorry I knew this would happen lopetegui didn’t do that bad the team is awful not the manager lack of players over 10 years makes the squad bad owners are the issue fact watch the supports turn on potter in 3 loses times
3 shots on target over 2 games in dreadful. Why don’t we have a dig from outside the box?
We had plenty. They just wasn't on target. 😂
We Need to sell maverpanos to for me he makes too many mistakes
