Bruh I just watched this tonight with my family and we were all dying laughing the whole movie. That scene got me 😂
Yes, the old dude was the dad. He had been in prison so long he didn't recognize his sons until they said the family prayer. He was going after them because the mob got him out of prison for a hit job against what he thought was just going to be more criminals.
probably one of my favorite movies, glad you reacted. Few thoughts, one the old man was their father, it was their family prayer so that’s why he finished it. Remember he’d been in prison so he didn’t recognize them until he heard them pray. Those tattoos on their hands mean “truth” and “justice” in Latin.

The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day (2009) go's into a few things the first film did not go into.
The Writer/Producer/Director Troy Duffy announced a 3rd film being officially in production on November 1, 2021.
It was to begin filming back in May, 2022. I have no idea if covid changed the planed timeline.

When the Old Man was shooting them, he had no idea they were his Sons (he was locked up when they were children). The Prayer they used for Roc told him they were his Sons (an "Irish Family" prayer"), which told him they were his sons and why he could Finish it.
Shit I woulda been joining them in yellin at you to watch this if I'd known you ain't seen it yet.

First off, loved the reaction, love that you got to this movie, knew you'd have a blast with it. However, I think you missed something. The brothers were not professionals before these events. The pager that the one brother answered was one they took from the first Russian guys. The call was for the big guy, Ivan, not the brothers. They just took it as a sign from God that their dream/vision/idea to become vigilantes was the right path. As they said later to Rocko, it kind of just fell in their laps. Still definitely enjoyed this reaction, so cheers!!!
Edit:ok, you did kind of piece my above point together eventually, but I'll leave my comment as is because it's a point worth making. As far as we know, the brothers didn't do the s kind of thing before the events of this movie, beyond inferring that they grew up rough and tough without their dad and that they knew/were friends with some shady people.

A great cult movie, completely went under the radar for me when it released but saw it years ago and its great. Every character is completely nuts. Especially Willem Davoe's character slowly going more and more insane.

When this came out and I was a young paratrooper you would periodically hear someone yell " and there was a firefight". Mostly before some sort of weapons training.

Before I moved out of state, my buddies and I would watch this every St. Patrick's day, and try to keep up with shots for all the f-bombs! Great way to get wasted! And we all lost it at the cat scene!

Man I always forget about this movie, one of my favorite action/comedy films. "Blood in Blood Out" is a dramatic gang/prison movie, which is one of my favorite gangster films
They realized the old man was there father because he finished the family prayer which is why they didn't shoot him, and he didn't shoot them because he heard the beginning of them praying which was a family prayer and realized it was his son's.

Fun Fact: Doc the bartender is Doc from the US version of Fraggle Rock.
The other 2 guys in the Sin Bin that were killed are from deleted scenes. One is a pimp who was beating a prostitute and the other is a drug dealer who was dealing outside of the Sin Bin.

Late to the party, but love this movie! To answer the first question, St. Patrick's day is March 17th. The feast day for the Catholic Church for the missionary who Christianized Ireland. Nowadays, it's basically a Irish pride day that everyone uses to get drunk 🥴
Saint Patrick's Day is the Catholic feast day of Saint Patrick, the patron Saint of Ireland. In the US, it's also a secular holiday celebrating the culture of Irish-Americans. It's a big deal in Boston.

Fun fact: Only the panorama shots were done in Boston, the rest of the movie was shot in Toronto (I've eaten at the Lakeview Lunch at Dundas & Ossington many times). I'm glad someone is finally reacting to this great movie - you'll enjoy the sequel too, where we learn the secret of "il duce".

This movie got a raw deal when it was released. It was only released to a few theaters as the Columbine High School massacre had just happened and the studio was worried about backlash from a film with this much violence.

So for clarity sake, Billy connelly the old guy, is their father. And to answer your question as to why he didn't recognize them. He was in Hoag maximum penitentiary (which was closed for human rights violations) probably as you said for 25-life. They are right around that age id say. He never saw them outside of their infancy. The second movie explains Noah's origin story a little. And to touch on the morality of vigilantism, they did live in a neighborhood where crime was so rampant that people wouldn't bother calling the cops anymore, Willam Dafoe covers that in confessional, his hands are tied, but theirs ain't. You also see Noah, get granted parole via bribery kinda solidifying the necessity of the saints. The second movie outlines how the courthouse warning helped improve the situation for about 10 years

this movie is very popular amongs my cousins and as a kid I had to beg to be allowed to see it, for my 13th birthday I got a DVD of this movie and was allowed to watch it supervised, aka, I watched this movie way too many times unsupervised as a kid. still my favorite movie

I can say I related a lot with you - a movie that asks a lot of questions and skews into the gray area of a movie with such heavy religion and interpretation of religion that made a lot of sense. Willem Dafoe so great and a legend; set up some of the rest of the cast (some are really really bad but/and bought into the campiness of it all and embraced what they could). I didn't recommend but props on you for listening to people and glad you had some thoughts. "'I don't know what to think'" with a shake of the head and some thoughts" would be a great critic line around the time I watched it. A time and place movie - I know they made sequels and never got around to them or wanted; no judgment - would just like that movie to stay as it is for me. Lots of other movies for all sorts to make!

This movie had a lot of production problems behind the scenes as neither director Troy Duffy nor the actors liked each other at all and they would get into actual fistfights during filming to let off some steam.

I think you're right where you're supposed to be at the end of the movie, man. It's a hard call to make, because while the justice system in America is deeply flawed and unbalanced, we're all supposed to understand that a person is innocent until PROVEN guilty in a court of law. Would I root for the Boondock Saints in a real-world, real-life setting? I honestly don't know. Can I root for them as the protagonists of a film? Absolutely.

You asked why he didn't recognize his kids. He has been in prison since there mother was pregnant with them. He never set eyes on his children before.
