I honestly think you could show the end cinematics to someone and not everyone would immediately realize that it's from a game and not actual real-life footage haha! Great job, this is looking awesome!
Monument Valley was the last road trip I got a chance to take with my dad before he passed. He always called the large formations "stick-ups" which cracked me up. You mentioned not wanting the terrain painting to look too repetitive with all the sand but.... man that's exactly what it is hahahahahaha. It was absolutely gorgeous to see in-person, I think you did a great job of bringing the area to life within Planet Zoo!

Wooooow using these imported heightmaps works amazingly well! Deserts are hard to make look interesting but with the lighting and textures this game needs very little to start looking good. As suggestion for a next recreation (with or without directly copied height maps) maybe some locations in the (foothills of the) Andes. In particular there is a unique place where the in-game Polylepis tree is exclusively found; or for a more general but prehistoric look you should recreate Araucaria forests (like in Conguillío National Park). Animals are hard to find their counterpart in-game unless you install a few mods to expand the roster.
The first episode of Planet Wild was set in the Amazon - The Flooded Forest if you've not seen that yet? I think you will enjoy my new zoo though, every Wetlands animal will be in it!

Jaguar are always cool but as far as I’m aware they haven’t been seen in Monument Valley since the 19th Century
