GM 3.6 V6 Oil Catch Can Install for Buick Enclave, Chevy Traverse, GMC Acadia

  • Catch can installed on a 2011 Buick Enclave with the GM 3.6 direct injection V6. This same engine is shared with the Chevrolet Traverse (2009-2017) GMC Acadia (2009-2017), and Saturn Outlook (2009) so the setup will be close to the same. I wanted to make this video for people wanting to know how to install a catch can on this particular engine, how to mount it and run the hoses.
    These engines have issues with the PCV system - the intake and intake valves getting carboned up due to direct injection. The PCV valve has too small of holes on it from the factory, so modifying the valve is important by drilling it out, so the engine can vent easier and not sludge up. That alone is good, but adding a catch can like this one will intercept all of the vented oil and moisture, and make it so very little oil gets into the intake and valves.
    It is worth mentioning that some people have installed another catch can on the "clean air" side of the PCV system, to keep the throttle body clean. I have not had issues with the throttle body getting really dirty, so at this point no catch can is needed.

    Here are the suppplies that I used for this catch can install:

    Heater hose: 3/8" ID heater hose- I bought 6-8 feet an had some left over. (Local auto parts stores should have this in stock.)

    Installed one before my drive from Riverside ca, to san Francisco and damn did it catch alot of oil sludge. Was completely filled when i got back home. Good video bro!

    Do you still have to add oil to the engine. Or does the catch can returns the oil to the engine ?

    Why didn’t you capture the foreword PCV valve off the snorkel as well? I believe that is where most of the oil comes from as it’s not restricted like the back one.

The only time the oil comes from the foreword PCV valve off the snorkel is during high engine speed events, or if the PCV valve that I captured is clogged. Then it would get the throttle body dirty. I don't drive that much, and the throttle body has not given me any issues with getting dirty. I cleaned it once - and it wasn't that dirty, but that was because I replaced the air filter and had stuff apart anyway.

    How much fluid are you getting on the regular? These engines are terrible for oil in the intake. I'd be interested to see a follow up after some cold weather or just normal driving of what you get out of it. Great video thank you

      I'm getting a decent amount of milky and oil substances in the catch can. It is more than I thought. In a little over 1,000 miles of driving, I've gotten around 7-8 ounces (close to a cup) of the milky crap that it catches, as of 2-13-2023. I installed it just before Christmas of 2022. Lots of the driving that I do is about 6.5 miles a day to school. That definitely generates lots of the moisture in the engine, because of both the colder Wisconsin temps, and short trips. But I do like to go on longer drives, to get all of the crap out of the oil- which I would go somewhere a good 10 miles away every weekend or so. When the temps get warmer for the summer, I imagine it will catch less crap overall, and not as much white milky crap. Modifying the PCV valve definitely helped to get all of the crap out of the engine. I should make a follow up video, and I'm glad someone was interested in the results of this.

      @@unorthodoxridez @Unorthodox Ridez If taken care of really well, they can be a decent engine. I check the oil very frequently, and change it by color as well- not letting it get dark and black. Lots of these engines fail because people simply neglect oil changes.

      @@jacktischer6676i have a 2017 buick and that model year you cant change the rear pcv it only interchangable if you replace the valve cover, its a newer design according to the stealership. But i did exactly in your video. Thank you for your vid it help out alot.

    I have a 2014 traverse the pcv valve is a one piece hose that connects to the in let valve on the engine do I cut the plastic hose and put my hose on it

      Yes, carefully cut the hard plastic off of the fitting that connects / snaps onto the metal PCV valve. You will also have to do that for the fitting on the top of the intake manifold as well. Then yes, put the hose you bought on both of those fittings in accordance with the catch can inlet/ outlet.

    Have you noticed any sluggishness from idle to 2k rpms? I get that on my 2014 sierra 5.3.

      It's a new, stock one, but I modified it as mentioned in the video.
