I have never seen a Zerg obliterate a protoss army the way MeomaikA did on that last game. This is probably my favorite series I've seen, it was so visceral, oh my God
I suggest you watch some OSL and MSL tournaments then. While they are old and rather sloppy by SC1 standards, they are full of timing attacks that hit before an important research like Psi Storm is finished or constant High Templar sniping.
and remember, protos was ShowTime! which is the wall! and eats it for breakfast.... Interesting to see zerg using almost the same units as starcraft brood war...
As a long time SC1 viewer, I can say that MeomaikAFan placing second at the 2008 WCS is well earned and is showcasing a few of the playstyles that some of the best SC1 Zerg are known for. A lower economy, but a much faster timing attack that SC2 pros are accustomed to, which means Showtime lost is indicative of how much there is to experiment with still left on the SC2 table. Not saying that he played poorly, just that he played comfortably instead.
I always love seeing plays that play off meta strategies and still win, it shows that there is still plenty of strategies that aren't being used to there full advantage
I remember once accidentally winning by completely messing up my build order while being too stubborn to go for another one. Apparently my opponent assumed i was going for ground mech and did a big roach push after beating a wave of hellions and marines i sent, but it was actually just a stupidly mistimed battlecruiser opener that i messed up and didn't make early enough. The guy all-inned me with his roaches and a nydus, only to find my ridiculously late BC which won me the game in a 'task failed successfully' moment.
There were mistakes by MeomaikA, but they weren't punished as much as ShoWTimE should have. I think he misread the Zerg's openings in game 2 and 3, and reacted very late.
As a long time American viewer I appreciate the geography lessons whioe watching these games. In fact if I ever have to write a paper involving geography I will figure out how to add "Germany and Vietnam are not close. Geographically speaking." - Lowko 11/22
I like the idea of floating the Gas, it's risky and you could use minerals for something else. But stocking it up allows for a big group of higher tier zerg or to allow to do some crazy work strats that just pop at odd times.
The purpose of floating the gas is to pop a critical mass of Mutas as soon as possible in one go. This was a tactic in Broodwar and in Wings of Liberty SC2.
On top of that, once you hit full saturation on your mineral fields, those three extra drones wouldn't be adding the same minerals/min as the first 16 if you pull them out of gas. One could send them to the natural, but there's a transfer penalty for that.

Watching this felt like somebody bringing wrenches to a game of dodgeball: not exactly unheard of, and considered a joke... but if pulled off well wow does it hurt! Excellent games, great casts, thank you!
I also play Hydralisk, Zergling, and Mutalisk back in the day in SC1. They're basically paper, but it cuts! Meomaika is probably used to using that build so he transfers it to SC2.
I think the way to phrase that whole first 3ish minutes is that “the most optimal build order is the one your opponent can’t deal with” which means that the range of optimal is between surprising and overwhelming, and variable depending on your opponent and their build
it's fun to watch, what a game! FYI, 'Meo' means 'cat' in Vietnamese. I read somewhere that he chose that name because he's a fan of Doraemon, which is a robotic cat from Japan :)

No they are not always better - Showtime played horribly in game 1 but he still won. These whacky builds rely on lack of scouting and/or misreads from the Protoss. Byun is a Terran, none of these particular builds would work as Zerg.
Can't speak for MeomaikA here, but I know a Vietnamese friend of mine regular complains about his 200-300 ping when playing on NA servers. Also I can't shake the feeling that MeomaikA's trying to play BroodWar in SC2, since I'm pretty sure Hydras were popular in ZvP in BW.
Yes, you are correct. Hydra bust is very much a BroodWar build used in ZvP and ZvT. Muta Ling is also a thing, including hydras in that mix is new to me though.

This man is gonna shake the way we see the game, that's a meta switch right there just because toss will have to know these anti-timings are a possiblity. Won't become the meta but will force some security moves
Last game of the series he is playing like it is starcraft 1 lol. I came back to starcraft after 2 expansions and i didn't know any of the new units. So i just played old meta and mutalisk/ling builds. I did surprisingly well.
So you stock up on gas you can't use right away, but when Zerg is on Lair tech you get extra mutalisks or hyrdalisks faster. So you have less drones and a hatch less in the early game, who cares. It seems as long as you hold, the units and upgrades you get with the banked gas could definitely be worth it. I was thinking of the math where the extra gas means extra upgrades or gas heavy units and what different builds could happen. More lurkers if you go straight there. More mutalisks, corrupters or perhaps quick broods with a spire. Would love to see other zerg go extra gas and see mid game variations post Lair upgrade.
Showtime was like is ok. I have my elephant gun here I can kill all the of them. So what are waiting for. Showtime well I shipped the bullets but they will be here. How fast? 5 seconds from now Well I don’t know how to tell you but the elephant is already charging.
I'm not good at SC2, but it's always been easier for zerg to switch tech, so you be the aggressor at first to hold off the opponent for a minute and scout. Then you force a certain reaction with a unit choice, and then counter after they react. I would like to seebthis zerg against a Terran opponent.
I totally get what you mean, it feels uncomfortable when a zerg player isn't being swarmy. I mean that's why people play zerg right? But damn impressive showing. Wickedly strange yet powerful timing attacks.
I like this kind of game that derail from what you see every game. Early stuff and weird unit compositions. These systematic builds strats made the game kinda boring. This is refreshing.
Meo's a pro. He just doesnt think the investment in early queens for creep is a good one, as against building enough units to apply heavy pressure. Creep's for defense, and Meo don't do defense.
@@danielpirez381 99.8% of professional Starcraft players, when they play Zerg, build lots of Queens (three per hatchery, minimum) and use them for defense and to spread creep across the map, to increase the speed of Zerg units and give vision, both of which help the Zerg defend.
