There are too many 100 year old people who eat oatmeal to completely buy into this line of thinking. For a long time I ate a cup of organic rolled oats with two tbs of ground flax seed, two tbs of chopped walnuts mixed with a cup of hemp milk every morning. I ate it cold. Not cooked at all. I felt great. My skin improved. But I listened to people like this so I stopped eating oats at least until I can get a glucose monitor to see exactly what it does to me. For those of you that do not have a glucose meter and have not taken the time to educate yourself about the subject of high blood glucose and high insulin, you have no idea the harm these types of foods may be doing to you. Just bought Bob Mills steel cut oatmeal. I will eat it sparingly and then never buy oatmeal again. Eggs, and tomatoes and spices. And water and lemon. Garlic too.
Up to now I have been a daily oatmeal eater. I eat it raw and soaked in coconut water with fruit. Was wondering if quinoa would be a healthier substitute, or does it too fall under the "unhealthy grains" umbrella?
I wish, I wish I knew this 30 years ago. I ate oatmeal at breakfast for a greater part of my life. My life was also nothing but misery. I've been grain-free for 27 months now and I'm never going back. Hopefully I didn't cause too much long-term damage.
Of all things you did and ate, oats are the least likely to cause a problem. But instant oats with sugar are not nearly as healthy as slow cooked steel cut oats with a lower glycemic sweetener or fruit.

If anybody can answer a question for me please. I am from Canada. Blood glucose is measured in mmol/L. How many mmol/L is a blood glucose of 100? Thanks for your help.
I love oatmeal. I ate it every day for years. However, last month I got a glucose meter. I tested my steel cut oatmeal. I discovered that even only 1/2 ounce of dry organic steel cut oatmeal (without sugar added) will spike my blood sugar about 30+ mg/dl higher than the same meal without it. Just 1/2 ounce added to breakfast. Too bad.
SO smart of you to be proactive by buying a glucose meter, subsequently testing steel cut oats [and probably other foods in question]. Excellent move! Few would make the effort on their own.
I've reached Medicare age, better get smarter. ...and yeah that one relatively cheap device delivered by our 'Medical/industrial Complex' is a great tool.
You can buy glucometers relatively cheaply in Boots in the UK. There are also devices that do glucose and ketones I gather which is also interesting to measure should your way of eating take you in that direction. I used to eat porridge every morning before work at 6am...by 9am I was hungry....must have had massive blood sugar spikes....Now eat a grain free cereal breakfast (there is a variation of what I have on dietdoctor but Dr D has recipes too) with coffee and collagen and 2 tspns MCT oil ....dont feel hungry for approx 8 to 10 hrs! All down to Dr D.....
Always eat to the test. A half cup of Rolled Organic Oats made my BS level go too high. I had to cut it down to 1/4 cup of it, only a small amount of blueberries, cinnamon, hemp seed hearts, chia, or flax seed. I use a small amount of oatmeal as a vehicle to get the other healthy seeds. Now, I’m not sure what to do, but always test your BS with what you eat to protect yourself and your arteries.
Ok , I was very low carb, and lost a bunch of weight, 57yo 6’2” male down from 425 to 200. Took some time, now exercising , training for 1/2 marathon next spring. I felt as if my energy levels were dropping and my lipid panel resulted in PCP prescribing statin (which I refused, suggested I try lowering numbers with diet) (am familiar with the cholesterol myth, Dave Feldman, etc..) (guess I got spooked) on lchf, so I went back to carbs, starting eating grains and legumes, love the results of the fiber, however, I am now starting to feel bloated. Could that be the grains? My energy did seem to perk up a bit. My intention now is to drop grains and legumes, maybe enjoy a limited amount of fruit, typically all I eat in that category are apples and bananas, usually in an almond milk smoothie. And go back to lchf with aforementioned fruit and some leafy greens as my carb intake. Concentrating on keeping insulin as low as I can. Thanks Dr for your information, count me as a subscriber!
Resistant starch. How about soaking, cooking, cooling for 24 hours then reheating the oats? It reduces the Amylopectin A, so that there is more Amylose than Amylopectin. Amylose is undigestible and goes to the large intestine as a prebiotic. Slow food is health. Not all oats are bad.
Wouldn't it make more sense to limit carbs to a % of total calories rather than a specific number of grams/meal. I am getting ready to hike the Pacific Crest Trail from Mexico to Canada. For 4-5 months I will be hiking about 20 miles/day and I estimate my daily calorie needs to range from 3200 - 4300. If I limit my carbs to 45g/day, that means my daily fat consumption would be nearly 4000 calories.
Dear Dr. Davis, I have two questions... 1). What are alternatives for us to eat for breakfast? Or, do you have a video on this topic, if so please point me to it. 2). Is it OK to use one spoon of barley grass juice powder in smoothie? Many thanks.
Well Doctor Davis, after watching a few of your good videos especially on oats and the grasses; I wondering what do I put in my home made muesli - as a Vegan of 38 years with IBD Crohn's then my diet could be so restricted in variety and nutrition. Perhaps lean heavily on a fruitarian diet?
Dr. Davis is all about keeping blood sugar spikes down. No meal more than 15g of carbohydrates. A fruit diet wouldn’t fit into his scheme. You can get eagerly from fats or carbs. If you limit your carbs you need to increase your healthy fat intake. No canola, no soy oil, no corn oil….but yes to olive oil and coconut oil. Nuts (macadamian, almond, walnut, pecans) and unsweetened coconuts can go In your muesli. Low carb fruits and veggies can form part of a low carb vegan diet. Plus supplements to make up for deficiencies.
Very interesting. With an allergy to oats, I avoid them and other grasses and have been using buckwheat (which is a broadleaf) for breakfast along with blueberries, ground flaxseed and a plant milk. Is this a mistake?
No one, not even my parents as a small child, could get me to eat oatmeal. The reason? Within 10 minutes after consumption, I found myself starving for more food; e.g., something dense like eggs to balance my blood sugar. Again, yet another highly appreciated piece of dietary wisdom from Dr. Davis. Just an addition from biochemistry: Glycation, which in cooking is called "browning" or the "Maillard reaction", is what makes toasted bread, browned cookies that are soft inside, and caramelized onions taste so good. Almost all proteins coming out of the nucleus where they've been transcribed land in the Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER). Here they are modified. One of the modifications, apart from folding, is enzyme-driven glycation. Most proteins do have a sugar unit attached-deliberately. BUT what we don't want is accidental or induced, "non-enzymatic glycosylation", as Dr. David explains.
I can no longer eat oatmeal. I used to love eating it every now and then..now in my late 40’s not great for my intestines, somehow it gives me bad pain in my intestines and takes me about a week to digest.
Jeepers. Thanks Bill. That is truly too bad, for me. Oatmeal is the last carb in my diet. I have noted that my blood glucose is over 8mmol/litre about one hour after eating oatmeal with nuts and cinnamon, no milk. (Sorry, don't know what that measures to in standard, imperial or what ever unit you are using for measuring blood glucose. Okay. I guess I have to get rid of the the rest of my rolled oats. How about steel cut oats? Those are the best. I just love the little crunch they have. Okay, I have been waiting for this segment. Thanks again, going to drop my oatmeal off at the 🏇 farm.
Empty statement. Firstly, at what minute? 30 minutes, 60? Constant glucose monitor. Then, your age, bmi, how long do go between meals, how often do you fast, how long is the fast, how many total calories a day, how long do you workout daily, how long do you sit. Then, there are 20% ers, with whom the rules don't apply.

My sttomach has been r eally bothering me. Now I am ready to quit eating rolled oats which I really like. Thanks for this report. What about brown rice? Please let us know. Thanks.
excellent doctor, quitting wheat was the best...
Thank you for this information! One more thing worth mentioning is that, in this modern world of ours, oats are a particularly rich source of glyphosate, which does tremendous damage to the microbiome.
If you eat organic oats, than you dont have to fear glyphosate. I buy my own, i dont buy pre-made oat meals.
Wow! Learn more every day from Dr Davis !
Gee Wiz .... All that was taught in public schools was ..... harmful! Now I find out 70yrs later. But better late than never. So Doc.. now please have a lecture about "what we should eat"...?
There are too many 100 year old people who eat oatmeal to completely buy into this line of thinking.
For a long time I ate a cup of organic rolled oats with two tbs of ground flax seed, two tbs of chopped walnuts mixed with a cup of hemp milk every morning. I ate it cold. Not cooked at all.
I felt great. My skin improved.
But I listened to people like this so I stopped eating oats at least until I can get a glucose monitor to see exactly what it does to me.
I go to see a doctor for my annual bloodwork on Friday.
I hope to reintroduce oats into my diet again and see how it goes.
@ Dr Davis Thank you for the info doctor. Please could you explain if it is there any risk in the lowering of testosterone when reducing carbs to “extreme” levels, as you propouse. And if cycling carbs for weight training could be a possible strategie for performance and muscle gain without the burdens of the sugar spike??
Thank you very much!
Great question about low carbs and testosterone--have you found an answer?
For those of you that do not have a glucose meter and have not taken the time to educate yourself about the subject of high blood glucose and high insulin, you have no idea the harm these types of foods may be doing to you. Especially those of you over 40. Get smart and get one. And don’t be stingy with test strips. This diabetes stuff is accelerating and even athletes are not immune. I speak from experience.
Genuine question: have we got a link to studies showing these concepts. I’d love to read the evidence from the primary source?
He has a link to his book. 😂
Soaking and sprouting grains and seeds reduces these problems but still an issue regardless.
have oats every day so what would be a better breakfast ?
So should we also be cutting out beans, potatoes, nuts, seeds and many leafy green veg as well, as they to are high in Phytates ?
Terry Flores leafy green veg are high in oxalates, look into it. EO Nutrition has a lot of great deep dives into these compounds. They can weaken bones and cause arterial damage, brain damage, all kinds of soft tissue damage and pain.
vegetables are healthy
Boiled and baked potato spike blood sugar worse than white sugar.
Dr Davis, could I get your opinion on oat fiber. I'm seeing more "Keto" bread recipes using oat fiber and you are my go-to doc for anything grain related. Are there concerns about using oat fiber? Thank you.
God bless you
I used to eat a bowl of "grass seed" for breakfast almost every day. Now I eat a 3 egg omlet and some sort of meat, plus some cheese and a small bowl of L reuteri yogurt. Years ago I never would have thought I'd be eating this way now.
Big steps in the right direction, Lloyd!
I got tired of omelettes and fried eggs and now I switch it up with deviled eggs.

What kind of carbohydrates are good to eat before weight lifting ?
Just another thing to avoid. 🤔😣
I do attempt a varied diet.
Now I understand the situation!
I was almost starting to believe this stuff. Until he starts beating on my oat meal i’ve been eating one cup of dry oats for year and a half every morning. And I’m in the best shape of my life. Maybe lifting heavy weights has something to do with it. But I don’t plan on stopping my oatmeal any time soon
I assume you are not type 2. Oatmeal spikes blood sugar big time.
Any links to the claims of how these chemicals work?
What about rice of all kinds doc?
KevinProNOW Also, the leading countries in diabetes also consume large amounts of rice....like India. Rice just turns to glucose quickly in your bloodstream.

Do wheat berries contain Amlod Pectin A? Wheat berries ground into flour.
I have read some articles that some people are more 'genetically' able to consume some grains without BS spikes than others. Is this true?

So do all grains contain amylopectin A?
I have gone without bread for 6 months, and potatoes, and any other flour made products. I ate other foods that antiflour and anti starch dietician say that is good to eat . After 6 months of withdrawn from the products I have mentioned above, my body could not tolerate the new foods and I went into a wild crazy mood, I went back onto my normal foods and felt much better.. when I eat the flour made foods it is not in big amounts, and I feel a lot better. Italian people eat a lot of flour made food, probably more than most Western world people.
Foreign foods that aren't made with toxins from pesticides etc, will be totally different. Parasites in many bodies can still thrive until they are dealt with. And will make a person feel unwell especially when they are reacting to knowing they are starting to die & make s person crave to refeeding them
Does anyone have any links for sites with 'Healthy Recipes' please ? much appreciated
~I dont know what to eat anymore......
Everything you eat they say it is unhealthy. Maybe everyone need to stop eating.
Quinoa carbs far lower than oats
I wish, I wish I knew this 30 years ago. I ate oatmeal at breakfast for a greater part of my life. My life was also nothing but misery. I've been grain-free for 27 months now and I'm never going back. Hopefully I didn't cause too much long-term damage.
Of all things you did and ate, oats are the least likely to cause a problem. But instant oats with sugar are not nearly as healthy as slow cooked steel cut oats with a lower glycemic sweetener or fruit.
No wonder I was so sick. Thank God I found keto and carnivore.
HelmetBlissta Lol, good luck justifying your worldview. Btw, I don’t know what you mean by god. I didn’t know that the existence of God means I don’t have to do anything. I guess the only logical explanation here is that we’re referring to two very different beings.
You believe in God, you’re just angry. Otherwise, you wouldn’t have written your comment. There’s no such thing as Atheism. Keep wrestling with it.
All down to Dr D.....
what meter did you buy to do the tests? thanks
Even if the oats are verified non-GMO and steel cut ? Are they still to be avoided?
DayCare62
But what were your triglycerides? That was a lot of weight to lose. How long did it take?
Resistant starch. How about soaking, cooking, cooling for 24 hours then reheating the oats? It reduces the Amylopectin A, so that there is more Amylose than Amylopectin. Amylose is undigestible and goes to the large intestine as a prebiotic. Slow food is health. Not all oats are bad.
So what else would you eat for fiber.?
Wouldn't it make more sense to limit carbs to a % of total calories rather than a specific number of grams/meal. I am getting ready to hike the Pacific Crest Trail from Mexico to Canada. For 4-5 months I will be hiking about 20 miles/day and I estimate my daily calorie needs to range from 3200 - 4300. If I limit my carbs to 45g/day, that means my daily fat consumption would be nearly 4000 calories.
I miss my steel cut oats
I have to question this information as I have not witnessed blood sugar spikes as you claim.
Dear Dr. Davis,
I have two questions...
1). What are alternatives for us to eat for breakfast?
Or, do you have a video on this topic, if so please point me to it.
2). Is it OK to use one spoon of barley grass juice powder in smoothie?
Many thanks.
Bacon and eggs.

Grains are awful he’s said that, so having muesli everyday is a mistake. Eat fruit salad for breakfast
Very interesting. With an allergy to oats, I avoid them and other grasses and have been using buckwheat (which is a broadleaf) for breakfast along with blueberries, ground flaxseed and a plant milk. Is this a mistake?
Yes, search the wheat belly blog for info on that ... I thought same early on and learned buckwheat is out!
This explains why I couldn't lose weight as a kid.
I continue to lose massive weights when i consume
thats why i feel very perfect i follow u of course man tell me pls im athlete what best carbs food to run
Thx. Yes, oats are out.
I am odd, in that I preferred oats uncooked, whole, unsweetened in a salad. Has anyone tested sugar spike of unsweetened raw oats, v cooked?
Usually cooking make the carbs more available , and the insul spike higher
Dam, so what are we to do now? Go hone and throwaway all our cereals and breads! Lol
THANK YOU!!
What should we eat for breakfast every day? What nutrients/foods should be eaten on a daily basis?
Bacon and eggs.
David explains.
omg...that's why I crave eggs after...make sense now....
What about millets ?
I got rid of my oatmeal. I used to buy organic and steel cut.
I can't believe that, iam CKD stage 3 patient. I ate oatmeal every other Day.and my blood sugar is only 96 to 100..
So glad you cited all your sources. Where are the studies that back-up, specifically, the claims you're making?
He's published. It's in the footnotes.
It's common sense. Agriculture revolution happened 10k years ago. What do you think we ate before that
Samuel Johnson: "In England we wouldn't think of eating oats. We only feed them to Horses.
Boswell: "Well, maybe that's why in England you have better horses, and in Scotland we have better men".
