I don't know... maybe second to Henk Poort, that man's a beast in his own right! He even did a country song from Josh Turner on the show called Your Man. He did a Dutch folk song too (different style to American country, which is a different folk style). Also do you know Don McClean's song Vincent? He did a Dutch version of that too which sounded just awesome.
Poofy hair wrote the song, about his parents' divorce. Yeah Floor performed it amazingly, but he deserves a lot of credit too. He's only 20, but he's been through a lot and has an old soul. This whole episode gave me a whole new amount of respect for him.
Absolutely! He seemed like a bit of a goofy kid at first but getting to know him, I'm impressed! 'If you wouldn't say it, you shouldn't sing it' seems to be his motto, and how he wants to take you places via storytelling, take you to your own memory. I love his view on music and if he would stop singing in Dutch I'd probably give him a serious listen.

Maybe it's because I grew up hearing many of these words and it all sounds like baby language to me, I don't know, but I can't really stand Dutch as a language to perform in.
Ruben is only 20 and he wrote this about his parents' divorce. He is a great storyteller and Floor loved that about him, even saying she was looking forward to seeing what he is going to write and do for the next 10 years, hoping he would be able to tell us how great love is.

I was lucky enough to see Floor live many years ago with After Forever. The thing that is so amazing about Floor is her combination of versatility, beautiful tone, expressive delivery, the emotion she conveys (even if singing in a language you don't understand) and the incredible control she has over her voice. And on top of that she has incredible stage presence. Many good singers have some of those qualities, but for a singer to have all of them is so rare. It's great to see Floor finally getting the recognition she deserves thanks to this show, Nightwish reactions, etc.

I did not think very much about the young lad at first, because of prejudice I must admit. Being so young for a start. I did not bother to check him out or take him very seriously. Obviously I was wrong. Writing such a song about the divorce of your parents is more than I could do at that age. And can still not do, really. ;=) And the redention of Floor, wow! Imagine sitting there, so young, and be sung to by her, with her taking the trouble to translate and sing your song from the heart. Amazing. Took you long enough to get to this! Just kidding. :) It's probably an amazing song to start with, but with Floor singing it's impossible not to be amazing. Very emotional song. I don't think there was a person there, or listening around the world, that wasn't crying a little bit.
The lyrics were great and for all of the jokes about 'poofy hair' he's a very intuitive and relatable songwriter. This song is about a conversation between a child and his divorcing parents and it's from both sides. The kid having questions for the parents, not understanding, being unable to compute what's happening with the divorce. Because he loves them, they love him, but it still can't last. So about love he doesn't know a thing (his feeling). Then from the parents side, being lost in what's happening and how you realize that the kid is still there, and still needs your love, while you're also heartbroken. So the parent also has trouble understanding love, how it works, how to process everything. (This is based on the lyrics and the context of what Ruben himself said about the song before Floor performed it). It got Tim (divorced, wondering about his kids), Henk (child of divorced parents), Ruben (duh, it's his words) and Samantha (Having a strong motherly urge to console, not a child or parent of divorce) and Floor couldn't look at Ruben or she'd lose it too. I am dad. Of 4 children who were products of a divorce. At times it was very tough for me to be their dad. Mainly because their birth dad was still around. I couldn't afford to give them what he did as far as material things. I never gave up loving them though. Because I tried to understand how they felt. All of a sudden in their 20's i was no longer "Bernie " to them, one at a time they started calling me dad. This song is everything to me.. It is always tissue time when I, listen to it. I get what it means. So do my children.

Now everybody just TRY to imagine, with such great genetics, what Floor and Hannes' daughter Freja would sound like in the future (IF she decides to become a vocalist, anyway. Lord knows she will have her pick of her own career when she is ready).

Then, as any real professional at any craft, they take that talent and put in the WORK (as you said, Practice, Practice, PRACTICE). This is how World-Class professionals (at any trade) are made. I know from personal experience that not everybody is born with talent. Obviously there ARE people who didn't have any talent at all to start with and just kept at it until something happened. But those would be rare.
I am so damn happy Nightwish got Floor to sing for them. Both of the previous singers are not bad by any measure. But they both are limited in their scale. And the genius that is compositions by Tuomas Holopainen need a singer that can sing anything. Floor is the perfect match for Nightwish and it makes me so happy they have her now! Because the perfect band finally has a perfect singer to match them.

Floor kept the style and way of Ruben Annink's (the young man in tan jacket) song intact. But she doesn't make covers, so she and her sister Irene translated the lyrics into English.
Making it hers, and in that way fresh and unique.
Now everybody just TRY to imagine, with such great genetics, what Floor and Hannes' daughter Freja would sound like in the future (IF she decides to become a vocalist, anyway. Lord knows she will have her pick of her own career when she is ready).
Not much to do with genes. To be able to (just about) anything really well, it's all about dedication and practice, practice, practice. ;-)
@@MrFloppyHare Yes, that is a point, but some people are also BORN with the amazing talent like Floor was. Then, as any real professional at any craft, they take that talent and put in the WORK (as you said, Practice, Practice, PRACTICE). This is how World-Class professionals (at any trade) are made. I know from personal experience that not everybody is born with talent. Obviously there ARE people who didn't have any talent at all to start with and just kept at it until something happened. But those would be rare.

I am so damn happy Nightwish got Floor to sing for them. Both of the previous singers are not bad by any measure. But they both are limited in their scale. And the genius that is compositions by Tuomas Holopainen need a singer that can sing anything. Floor is the perfect match for Nightwish and it makes me so happy they have her now! Because the perfect band finally has a perfect singer to match them.

As you said about Nightwish, it's heavy/brutal and yet soft/beautiful music at the same time. Where Nightwish is hard and heavy in the music, Floor (& Irene) are in their translation.
