    First that is probably one of the calmest places to work on a boat engine. That lake/bay is as calm as glass. Second this was very easy to understand, thank you.

    This video saved me after a week of searching for faults. Had so many issues, but I had a great spark on all coils, but it still turned out that one of the coils had a lot higher resistance than the other two. Thanks man!

    Have tried this and get a ground reading but absolutely nothing when I when I touch the caps. Subsequently the boat is a pig to start? Should I not get some sort of reading though? Should the ignition be turned to on position?

    1990 25hp Johnson outboard it runs but not like it should did all the tests, all check OK except for the CDI, no continuety on either wire but it does crank and run but not like it should

    My motor has 6 coils. When attaching to cdi wire and then ground I have 4 that read minimal and 2 that read high. Confused at what I should look for next

    Tohatsu outboard does not get gasoline into the cylinders. The injector, ecu, spark plugs are intact. When I pour gasoline into the pistons, it works a little. When you press the starter, oily gasoline comes out of the exhaust. Greetings from Turkey..

    shop manual for my evinrude 15 hp (2000 4stk) says resistance primary to ground shouldn't be more than 3.2 ohms and I'm reading as high as 5-6 ohms when its warm. it's running great for about 10 minutes (under way) then it chugs and stops. Fuel system rebuild and working ok. Is that high enough resistance to cause it not to run??
    Maybe It's the power pack.
    I have to get a spark strength tester and check it, I didn't realize this motor was discontinued and can't find cheap parts, new coil is 135 bucks!

      Did you figure out the problem. My motor does the same. Runs perfect ten minutes then over heats

    • @rrider993
      @rrider993 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey..had a similar problem and it was the thermostat ! It was shutting down the engine as it should, because it was running to hot- the impeller was not pumping enough water...you probably know to look for the tattle tail water stream ...is it weak or missing?

  • @owenzvtz4395
    @owenzvtz4395 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    My ohms are all reading 0 for these tests. Would this be the readings of a bad coil or am I doing something wrong. 2006 mercury 9.9, runs at full throttle but has weak spark.

    • @rrider993
      @rrider993 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Did u get help? Zero ohms resistance implies a complete circuit. Or “full connection”. Are u sure you have your meter set up correctly? Is it a digital meter or analog, with a moving needle? Does the “reading” move around a little ? Depending on the meter, you usually get a little bit of resistance reading (eg 0.5 ohms) . I think u should check your meter or try another. If it’s analogy meter and the needle does not move,, you are likely misunderstanding. That usually means an infinite reading...meaning very HIGH resistance.

    I'm still trying to figure out how you are testing the coil if you unhook the wire to it?

    • @robinm3003
      @robinm3003 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Because he is measuring the primary which has a very low resistance plus the high resistance in the secondary it's basically the same as testing from ground. If you see an open circuit or no resistance that's when you know there is a problem. Even if the secondary coil is broken you may still get spark because of the high voltage induced but it's moving to the unreliable state where humidity and your horoscope determines the result.

      @@robinm3003 .What setting should your meter be on for this test? 200 0hms?

    • @robinm3003
      @robinm3003 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@locknload9143 yes, even lower perhaps, the continuity setting... It will only be a small number of ohms. ...it a very long copper wire and copper has a low resistance ...you are looking to see if that thin wire is broken. Any reading is good except a really large one ...compare one coil with another on the motor.

  • @yougeo
    @yougeo 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    You're skipping over the most important part you say the probe should be a 0.5 or even a 1 or a 2 reading. Is that ohms? So you're saying a range of 1/2 to 2 ohms for the first reading? And multiple m have multiple fractional settings which one should we use?

    No help at all. What setting on ohm meter

    • @rrider993
      @rrider993 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Setting is same as when testing anything with a meter when unknown value (in this case resistance). Start at the highest resistance setting and reduce it down to the next lowest until your meter is close to the values he mentioned in the video. It you go too low a setting, you will get OL (overload) or similar reading ..you can use the highest setting but it will greatly affect the accuracy of the reading ..so set it as close as possible .For the Primary reading, he got 0.5 OHMs so set your meter to 10 ohms, 100 ohms...whatever your meter has for a setting just above 1 ohm....the secondary reading was 10 Kilo ohms and the bad coil was 200 Kilo ohms... again, start with a high setting..say, 500 Kilo Ohms or whatever your meter has that’s close...if you select too low a setting, your will get OL for overload on the display. If you have an “auto ranging” digital meter, non of this matters...it automatically sets the range and displays resistance.

    Your video goes to people who don't know what you know. You use acronyms that we don't understand. You take a video that does not show what you are doing!

    • @rrider993
      @rrider993 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You should learn some very basics before doing this work if you don’t understand. Look for a video that explains how ignition for simple motors work. Start with a “points” system, then CDI (capacitor discharge)...the ignition coils work the same in most systems.
