    I loved that you left the trainers in the charity shop for someone who really needs them! That is a big golden star in the margins from me! ⭐👍
    Some cheap socks from a grocery store were my favorite running socks for a long time, they were the only socks that pretty much guaranteed me a blister free running experience. There are some quality bargains to be had every now and then. Most of my running kit is bought on a discount.

    I bought my first running clothes from relatively expensive brands, but i now prefer Decathlon.
    I'm not too happy about their shirts, but the rest of their stuff is amazing.
    I can especially recommend the Evadict brand from Decathlon for just about everything you need. The trail running short and tight have better storage than the expensive shorts and tights I have. The hydration packs are 1/5th the price of for example a Salomon and work great.

    Ben should have bought a sports bra as well to make it fair 😉, but Mary played fair and did not go over the top, some Soar stuff and a Prime X would have pushed it. I love my expensive gear and their nice to have features but my top budget tip would be previous generation of good shoes on a discount, Nike Pegasus under 50 or Saucony Triumph under 90 earthcredits gives you tremendous and durable value. Add a Garmin Forerunner 55 and this will take you very far before you actually need something better.

    I’m a mountain biker, just starting running. I know it is all relative, but to me, running is cheap. Running shoes cost the same as mountain bike shoes. Running clothes cost less. Then you need the bike, helmet, bike rack for the car, maintenance and more….. a proper mountain bike with full suspension starts at around £2500 for a base model - a midrange bike would be from around £4000. Again, running is cheap!
    The fact that it can be affordable for everyone is awesome.

    Flip Belt! Possibly my favorite piece of gear. I’m wearing the same set of 4 shorts I bought 7 years ago so no new costs there. Shoes need replacing often so I get mine cheap online. I know my size and brand/model so it’s easy to save 60% or more for trainers.

    Put around 162€ in my second running kit after my old shoes were coming apart, literally. 60% went into the trainers, 40% into everything else, including a belt, two pairs of gray shorts, three pairs of socks, three white sleeveless shirts, and 175ml hydration bottle. Everything was bought with massive discounts on the web, and they 2022 "fashion" and products.
    My first set was around 1/3 of that, so basically super cheap t-shirts, socks, and 80% spent on trainers, and it lasted for two years, but I ran much less. I feel like I'm in heaven right now, and feel very professional with the new set. The trainers made a massive difference.
    Truth be told, I'm on a two week holiday after two months of intense running, and drinking beer almost every day and it is starting to show... The break is the longest I had in years, and I will be running for a few years before another long holiday, so I'll take this time to cool off, though! Can't wait to get back on the runs, though, but gotto give the mind a bit of a break and let the wild family man drink beer at the sofa!

    This is a good idea. I was heading out for a long trail run last weekend and laid everything I was wearing or taking with me on the ironing board. Staggering amount of stuff. It was all useful but not essential. At it’s core, the beauty of running is it’s so simple, doesn’t need to be so expensive. Put a pair of runners on and away you go. Another great way to keep the cost down is buying last years models. You can pick up some absolute bargains and often, the updates and improvements on the new models are minimal. I’m 400km into a pair of Saucony Triumph 20’s I picked up like this at less than half of the retail and they’re a phenomenal shoe.

    I steered so far clear of a running belt as I thought I would find it so cumbersome. But I tried it recently, realised it was actually a solid storage solution (easy access to gels) so took it out for the marathon. It was great! Make sure you tighten it though otherwise it moves around when you run, or worse, digs into you!
    It took 4 months, 2 half marathons and 2 10ks of running last year, to realise how much difference the proper footwear makes.
    You can be a runner for free, or for low cost, but the more you spend, the more you can train and specialise in how you train (e.g. the heart rate monitor). Ben/Mary - you always make the point that you're in this for life so the investment, no matter what it is, should always be worth it for you!

    Clothes - get something cheap with a view to upgrade as you go. EBay can also be your friend.
    Trainers - that’s where you should spend your money initially but there is money to be saved. Will most runners notice the difference between Nike Pagasus 19s or 20s other than the price?
    Tech - your phone can do so much and there are great apps.

    • @justinnevins107

      You probably could not find Nike Pegasus 19s or 20s except from a collector, which would cost you a fortune! These are 21 and 20 year old shoes - they are up to Pegasus 40 now (sorry, just being a smarty pants 😉).
      But you make a really great point! You can often get the previous year's model at a great discount (and most of the well established, models like Pegasus, there is not a lot of difference from one year to the next year), especially if you are not particular on color. I have a pair of $160 trainers that are God awful coloring that I picked up, direct from Nike, for $80!
      BTW, I did actually have both the Pegasus 19 and 20 in my closet until recently (WELL used and past their functional life), but my wife made me throw out all my old trainers that I was keeping for some unknown reason. Thanks for all the great content and constant motivation.

    • @davidh5429
      @davidh5429 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's not all about going barefoot, it's your mechanics that matter. Max cushioning shoes are amazing at preventing injury but also allow you run like a limp donkey/heel strike and get away with it. Wich is a double edged sword.
      Best thing is actively monitoring of your mechanics, do sprint drills for your posture to learn forefoot strike and you can use well cushioned shoes to your advantage. Unless you like painful feet and uncomfortable runs, especially on tarmac and concrete.
      Also don't buy a size shoe that Crunches your toes together. Nikes modern running shoes aren't the toe crunchers they were pre 2020's.
      If you want wide toes like a claw, you can just do a few toe exercises a day and use toe spacers if necessary.

    • @doncarlospipely8852
      @doncarlospipely8852 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Born to Run is a great read. I took something a little different from you though. It’s the combination of max cushioned shoes paired with poor running form that gets people injured. The extra cushioning means runners don’t have to be as focussed on their form as there’s no pain if they heel strike, overstride etc. until they get injured. IMO, both max cushioned shoes and barefoot running have a useful place in running.

    I think those charity shop shoes are Kalenji (entry level brand) from Decathlon, not bad but not great - Though Decathlon do some decent shoes. Another possibility is 2nd hand online platforms like Vinted/Wallapop, as long as you get photos of the soles/midsole to see the condition and they're not totally worn out (great way to save cash on normally very expensive runners, or pickup a decent running watch at a fraction of the price!). Also I'm surprised you didn't mention underwear, as newer runners or total beginners might make the classic mistake of cotton boxers - synthetic material is key to avoiding the dreadded chafing! Decathon again do great technical boxers (about €8/£5 for basics and €12/£9 for really nice laser cut boxers for longer/harder runs) - Cheers!

    Hey guys hooe you are well !! Recently I have started buying 2nd hand ✋ the reason behind this i have bought 3 different trainers this year which I have run in, but not quiet hit the button so I sold these, this must be the case across the board as I managed to find a set of very good condition Alphaflys at a 50% discount but hardly worn. 😊

    i've bought great stuff from stores like Kmart where tops and shorts cost, like, ten bucks (Australian) a pop, that has also held up surprisingly well...shoes are where i put my cash, for sure, and also bras, i have tried cheaper bras and regretted it, sadly that's just a non-negotiable. if i could give any advice to newbie runners, especially if they're well endowed in that region...splash out. it is worth every cent.

    Expensive isn't always better for shoes either. I've had an overall excellent experience with cheap brand running shoes (the equivalent of around £30-£40 in terms of price range), and a much more mixed record with more "professional" brands twice the cost. Granted, I don't have the spare cash for the really expensive ones, so never tested them.

    I know someone, that if I told her that she could buy running gear without any limets, she WOULD buy goldplated running shoes 😀
    On the other hand I also know one, that would head down to the second hand shop and find something.

    I am a recent subscriber to this channel and love the content. I have not managed to go through all the video content yet, but I am looking into purchasing a simple/cheap heart rate monitor to use with MAF training. Does anyone have a recommendation/advice? Thanks

      Same (hailing from Saxony, German). Bought 150€ trainers only once, after getting a very extensive gait analysis from my local running shop. That helped a ton to put me on the right track shoewise, but after that I buy last season (new) shoes for usually 80 € instead of 150 €.
