The people getting upset about this game being a copy of Advance Wars can calm down. There hasn’t been an Advance Wars title released in almost 20 years. If the devs were going to release a new game, it would’ve happened already and who knows, maybe this game will show them they can come out with a sequel
It just seems a bit too much of a copy imo. An Advance Wars inspired game is cool, there's a few of them on the market. War Groove comes to mind. But this just is Advance Wars. If it's just a free fan project cool. If they're planning to charge money, I'm gonna hate on it.
@@mattmcginn8096this is the first game from a new indie studio. It started as a hobby project by someone recovering from a car crash, that then sought funding through kickstarter. Seems a lot like a project born out of passion, presumably by someone who, like you, loves advance wars. Maybe it could be more original, but this isnt some faceless corporation greedily ripping ripping off advance wars.
I 100% agree! I downloaded the demo the same evening the video released and having to escape to end turn is a very odd design choice. I’m not sure when it’s not made available on screen all the time like other games. Side note: now that I’ve played, I can say that Tom is so 👏 good 👏 at 👏 games! It took me way longer to beat the tutorial and I didn’t beat the green river team hahaha
I wouldn't mind seeing actual Advance Wars being played by THE Angory Tom some day! Hopefully we will get the series back again but... who knows. World events messed up 1+2's launch pretty badly.
I love how these games have like...such the most hand-wavey writing. "We need these two factions to fight!" "What if one just attacks the other?" "Why?" "Who cares?" "Perfect!"
Seriously, Advanced Wars was not the first game to work this way. I was playing a game similar to this on the PC Engine when the original grayscale game boy was the only game boy in existence. This is a game concept that has been around for a while. Advanced Wars leans heavily on what came before it.
Hey Tom, an other amazing video!! I don’t know if you have heard of this game, but I instantly thought of you when I saw the premise of it. Trainyard builder, it’s a diorama builder for trainsets. I would love to see you make a pittoreske town and maybe a slightly post apocalyptic industrial center next to it, etc etc Love your content and hopefully you are willing to do something with this. Sincere greetings, and thanks in advance.
Yeah, the suicidal AI combined with easily exploitable behaviors (pinning down a tank indefinitely with a single infantry at a city) makes me think you would win a lot of engagements you don't tactically deserve to.
Have you ever played Wargroove? It's a similar style game, but fantasy. It's pretty fun! I think it's by the same team as Advance Wars, but I'm not sure.
I saw this in the Steam Next Fest, and like... I can't help but feel that the CO portraits don't really match too well with the other aesthetics. It feels like they took Days of Ruin COs and stuck them in Dual Strike, and it's just very jarring. So I'm interested, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to overcome that dissonance. That said, they do have some interesting unit and gameplay additions. The artillery infantry is a nice niche, and the ability to move enemy units is spicy. Buildings being immobile is interesting along with the new capture mechanics, and there didn't seem to be any sort of repairing. I do wonder if you can Join units. So many subtle tweaks that do seem to add to the tactical decision making. I do miss my bikes though.
I barely remember it, but I never played it. What it reminds me of is a PC engine game. I don't remember what it was called but it's so similar to this, had Sprites for the units and it showed the combat with the same picture-in-picture style that showed the two groups of units on opposite sides facing each other but not in the same frame.
Daily reminder that Tom is an amazing person and to thank him for all he has done/will do - Day 1777 OOO a very cool little game indeed, and very much looking great wth some great ideas/additions. I don't actually know of the original game, but if this is based off it, then bound to also be great :D I am very much looking forward to seeing more :D Ha ha, love how Tom made Jackson a whimpering coward XD OOOO, damn, The Rhinos are cool :D XD The Fleeing Snipers does seem like a very good film :D
Nintendo don’t own tactical war games, just like how they don’t own tactical medieval war games. It’s like saying you can’t make RPG’s because it has similar systems, gameplays and graphics to Final Fantasy.
@@M0M0117 There are like two dozen steps between it's a war game and they are literally stealing assets and adding few different colored dots here and then to make it looks a tiny bit different... The COs are different looking but keep the same vibe and I assume the texts are rewritten but look at the sprites for the tanks, the jets, the soldier, the buildings, the map... They have not done 10% of the game art
Because there hasn't been a good AW game in 15 years, and I'm including reboot in that. I suppose every RTS is a Starcraft Clone and every hero shooter is an Overwatch clone too?
@@deltaangelfire If you're gonna say trollish things like your 2nd sentence I probably shouldn't bother replying to you but what the heck. There are plenty of of RTS that are nothing like Starcraft. BAR, Zerospace off the top of my head even though there are many more. Same goes for Overwatch. Warside is an actual clone of AW. There's a difference between a game being inspired by another and just being a ripoff. This is a ripoff. It didn't even try to do its own take it just cloned it and did a low effort change of the character art style. See Stormgate, even though it isn't very good, it's what I would call a good example of a game being inspired by another but doing it's own thing.
The first in the Wars series was a clone of Desert Commander (1988). AW did not invent most of the mechanics they get credit for. Are the Advance Wars devs shameless too? Or are you giving them a free pass because they were the most commercially successful?
@@AndyND12wow, you beat me. I was going to cite Military Madness, from 1989, has the earliest game that fits this formula that I knew of. You found one that was a year older.
Damn, they didn't really improve or change any features from advance wars. It's pretty much a direct copy, even the artstyle is similar. I'd expect a pc version of advance wars to be a bit more unique and interesting in it's own ways, rather than making a direct ripoff. Even the writing is full of references and nonsense because they don't write an actual story. If this is the real music to the game, it's awful. Would've been nice to use the power of PC and make bigger maps, an insane map editor, more customization options for teams/powers/units, add some kind of improvement to the genre.
i'm aware of my silly spelling... pujawu throw this one at him "ever drink to much purple gatorde and shit bright green?" ya... he says powerade but... i gave him that in lockdown, and he actually used it it's true by the way... if you drink nothing but purple gatorade for a few days... your shit will be neon green

Advanced wars: reboot camp just came out last year though?

It's also fairly different. More unit diversity for one.
Not digging that end turn button placement, but this looks pretty great otherwise.

I’d love to see a full play through of this when it gets a fun release. Tom’s nerdy-commander voice is hilarious.
This made me remember Wargroove, also an advanced wars clone but with custom map support as well, it was pretty cool!
I'm glad I kept all my Advanced Wars games.
Wargroove is a pretty good game in this style as well. Includes a little more whimsy maybe and a very good dog 😂
The thing that makes any tactical pixel art game even better - top tier Tom voice acting.
The pushing mechanic reminds me of Into the Breach, great lil addition to the advance war formula
The voices we didn't know we needed.
Would also recommend Tiny Metal for people who like these types of games, both the first one and the sequel are on PC and Switch

After searching a little bit I found the game. It was called Military Madness. It was released in 1989.
There's also Famicom Wars which released in 1988
Warside! Side me up tom!
Thanks Tom! I've added this game to my wish list! Can't wait to play it, I loved Advanced war lol.
Armies of Gielinor anyone?
Was looking to see if anyone mentioned this. 😊
Its a demo so I can't imagine there's too much more left, but I would love to see a lot more of this
Keep up the great work, Tomathy & Editors
Beckett does give off Captain Iglu vibes
Wenn Kanonenschüsse krachen,

Is that first map a clone of the tutorial mission from Advance Wars as well? Love it!

Million dollar idea. Warhammer 40k Advanced Wars game.
i LOVE advance wars. i been wanting a advance wars remake or spiritual successor for so long. THIS game look like exactly what i want!
There was a remake on switch wasn't there?
Reminds me of Battle Isle on the Amiga back in the 90s

when is this coming out? Feel. like I've been waiting for years
MORRRRRRRRRRR
CAPTAIN BIRDSEYE??????
isn't this advance wars?
Why do they have the portraits so zoomed in? I don't need to see their nose hair just take a step back and let me see the tops of their shoulders.

Is this made by the same people that made wargroove?
No, this is made by LAVABIRD, Wargroove is made by Chucklefish
