The Starks have been using their honorable reputation to rule for 8,000 years. Game of thrones is a story which ends in *yet another* Stark victory (Sansa Queen of the North, Bran, King of the South). Even at their weakest point, there were still Northern Houses willing to risk everything to help the Stark kids... Do you think that Houses in the West would have done the same once fear of Tywin was gone? Every other house is an upstart compared with the Starks, and although being treacherous or murderous like the Tyrells or the Lannisters might win in the short term, in the long game House Stark has the superior idea with *Honor*
@@SamBrickell While you’re 100% right you have to question why ultimately. Other than Honor why did the North cling to the Starks? Especially for the sake of season’s 1-8 of GOT… I mean Bran and Rickon were presumed dead after the Ironborn siege. Arya was presumed dead and as far as anyone knew of Sansa she could of easily been presumed to have wanted to marry Joffrey on her own accord. Lets say by some miracle even with his leg wound, he won a trial by combat, he would likely receive more wounds in the process, his daughters are still being held hostage and it is a long trip back north. He might just as easily die of his wounds, after the match, might get helped along by poison, since he would likely be in the care of the crowns healers. Assuming he pushed past convalescing in the capital and tried to head north regardless, he might still die of the wounds/infection on the trip back home or get helped along to the afterlife by strangely well equipped bandits.
Ned was in a no-win situation, his best move would have been to start as many fires as he could before dying. He could do this by publicly recanting his confession and declare Joffrey, Tommen, and Myrcella as bastards born of incest, then demanding a trial by combat. He then just needs to provoke Joffrey into doing something stupid(er), like declaring Ice as his champion or denying his trial outright, the latter easily fuelling some dangerous rumors. Even if granted the trial, Ned wouldn’t need to fight-he could just use the opportunity to present some evidence he memorised about the children’s illegitimacy such as how every one of Robert’s bastards inherited his black hair and so was the case for every Baratheon including children born between Lannisters and Baratheons. Alternatively, if he suffered a mysterious “accident” before the trial, it would only further suspicion. Otherwise, if Joffrey proceeded with the execution anyways, it would mirror the Mad King’s killing of the last Lord Stark, potentially eroding some support for the Lannisters.
