  • Hey guys! Sorry this one took so long. You'll see why in the video ;)
    In this video I miter the tubes and throw them on the jig.
    I had a chat a Jamie Swan a while ago and he gave me a bunch of tips. One of which I used in this video. Thanks Jamie!

    Great channel !! I've learned a lot! Its something I've wanted to do for years!! Just bought the Sieg SX3 mill, Baileigh pipe bender and pipe notcher, and all the aluminium extrusion for my Jig!! It can't get here fast enough!! Thanks for the push!!!!

    As I was watching I was glad to see you weren't making any hole saw size mistakes like last build.... and then it happened !
    I felt the pain through the screen. I've done it many times before with other projects.

    Every frame builder at one time or another has forgotten to change out the hole saw. It is a sinking feeling when it happens, but it can be overcome with not to much pain. Thanks for sharing.

    This is excellent work. BTW, if you look up Keith Fenner, he just did a pretty good video on straightening a drive shaft. That is an option rather than living with a bow in the tube.

    • @PithyBikes
      @PithyBikes  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I didn't watch that one. I'll add it to my watch list. The tube is so very slightly bowed that it's not really a problem :) It's just nice for a retentive person to have it bow in line with the frame.

    Just like too say your videos are helping me so much with my a level project, keep up the amazing work!
    Just wondering why you transfered from the lathe too the mill too mitre the tubing, doing mitre testing at the moment and the lathe worked out ok but the mill seems like a better idea for some reason, thanks in advance!

    • @PithyBikes
      @PithyBikes  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Josh Scott On my setup, the mill is more rigid. More rigid, more better! 😁

    • @joshscott801
      @joshscott801 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pithy Bikes ah OK yeah, I have a full size mill (too my knowledge) and a full size lathe with a good 22" max material length... would you say the mill would still be stiffer, might be easier anyway 😀

    • @PithyBikes
      @PithyBikes  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think with full size machines, it all comes down to how you're fixturing the tubes. For example; if you're using a lathe and attaching the tube to the compound's tool post, this this is likely less rigid than a mill. The tool post being the weak spot. If you were to make a custom fixture to attach directly to the carriage and even eliminating the compound, this is probably as rigid as you can get on a lathe. Next would be how you secure the hole saw. Securing the hole saw with an arbor and collet would be ideal. Whew! thats a lot of work! Mill is best imo becasue it's relatively fast to setup and all you need are some angle blocks/tube blocks and a vise.

    • @joshscott801
      @joshscott801 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I thought as much, thanks for the response, hadn't thought of attatching it directly too the lathe... May look into that purely out of interest, but today I started milling some v blocks too secure my tubing in place on the mill instead as you are right, its a lot more rigid

  • @jpjay1584
    @jpjay1584 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    what defines the angle of the seat tube? the top end position is fixed, giving you the frame-length. (handlebar-seat-distance)
    but the bottom end (at bottom bracket) can be freely positioned? as you have no backwheel confronting the seat tube.
    could you choose the bottom end position to match the fork angle? (for aesthetic reasons)

    • @PithyBikes
      @PithyBikes  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +JP not sure I understand the question but I'll give it a go :)
      The whole ST assembly can be adjusted to slide front to back on the jig, thus changing the TT length. But before making that adjustment, the ST assembly can also rotate to change angle - which should be done first.

    • @PithyBikes
      @PithyBikes  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +JP while you can match ST angle with your Head Tube angle, it does not always make for the best ride characteristics depending on what the bicycle is used for. A lot come down to user preference. But I agree! Matching HT and ST angle does look the best aesthetically .

    Are those Starrett hole saws pretty good quality?

    • @PithyBikes
      @PithyBikes  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jess Neal I like them a lot. They seem to hold up well but h I haven't mitered that many tubes yet. The best thing about them is tooth count, they have more. I don't know if Starrett is the actual manufacturer or they just slap their name on them.

    • @jesscneal
      @jesscneal 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cool. They look like they have minimal runout too which is always a problem with cheap ones. Thanks for the reply. Frame is looking good so far. That jig is paying for itself :)

    Could you please post the mini-mill manufacturer? Googling 'mini mill' gives ambiguous results :) I am quite impressed it can drive hole saws into chromoly steel at that ARPM. I own a Sherline mill, and no way that thing would have enough power for that (I believe it's 200W).

    • @PithyBikes

      +Alex Cruz.V9 hi, not many people make these themselves. They usually buy them from suppliers like Paragon Machine Works. Cheaper to buy than make your own. Unless you're making a lot of them. But to make your own, you need a full size lathe.

    • @CarlosACruz-jm5mq
      @CarlosACruz-jm5mq 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @PithyBikes
      @PithyBikes  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Before I purchased a lathe and mill, I took a class on machining. This gave me an idea of what the machines are like and if I enjoyed machining. I think its a great idea to get your hands on a machine and try it out before you make any purchases. It also gives you some working knowledge of the machines and helps you buy a machine to the specs you want. Good luck!
