How to Grow an Avocado from Seed

  • When avocado season swings around I can't resist chucking a few in water to watch them grow. It takes a little patience but it's so fun to see the seed splitting open and that little tap root making an appearance. Even though it's better to move it to soil before the root gets too big they'll grow pretty big in water so if you just want a fun project to watch then keep it in water and if you want to grow it into a pot plant - or even one for the garden - then get it into soil.
As far as I know, avocados grown from a shop bought avocado seed won't grow any avocados and even if it did, it'd take around 10 years and they wouldn't be the same as the avocado you got the seed from. If you want it to grow fruit you need to wait until it gets big enough and then graft on part of an already fruiting tree.

Use a 1 gallon nursery pot. Fill with sandy loam. Top with mulch. It needs heat, humidity, and sunlight. Water it for 1 year. Keep in mind that not every seed, from every fruit, is viable. A year could be wasted if you have a bad seed. That's why growers begin production with 1,000 seeds. If they lose a few hundred, it's okay. Then they have to graft them, where they could lose more trees that don't take the graft. If 2/3 of the seeds are successfully grafted within a year, it will be a success.

CLIFF'S NOTES: How to grow an avocado from seed: Select an avocado, wait until it ripens, take seed out (makes no difference if it is large or small), plant seed into dirt with the belly button down without peeling it, water it and wait 2 or 3 months. Done. No silly sticks or water in cups necessary. That's just for noob entertainment. You also don't want to do the water silliness because the roots should go into dirt right off the bat so they are well arranged in there. If you do the water thing then you'll be screwing up the roots. There, straight from the avocado farmer.

@@lydiabrady9000 The soil around the seed needs to be damp so the root can find moisture. This isn't "my method". This is how avocado seeds are planted for grafting. No serious grower will ever use sticks and water like that. That's for entertaining.

Hi Daisy, I have few questions..
    - I planted 1 pit similar to your with small root at the bottom. I planted it in the same way as you did same container & soil, but it’s not sprouting any stem, it’s been 3-4 weeks - how long did that pit take for you to sprout a stem?
    - I planted 2nd pit similar to yours and it has stem, but it’s not producing any leaves. It’s stagnant at its growth - what should I do for the stem to produce leaves?
    - when should I put them outdoors ? Can these be grown under grow light?
    - How many hours of sunlight ?
    - how much to water the pit when it’s at starting stage?

My school has a avacado tree with not fully grown avocados but people still keep picking them, one day someone picked one and threw it on the ground so I took him home and took out the seed so he can become a big tree
Edit: it didn’t make it but u just recently started again with another seed

Get a big stick. Stand next to the tree. When someone comes to take an avocado, hit them with the stick.

Personally I don't recommend watering the soil until after planting.
Otherwise it will compress the root(s) too much.
