Hi Joe, just found your channel recently, wonderful content. I used to be a suona player for 7 years during my high school Chinese Orchestra. i rmb I couldn't even make a sound on my first try. That bamboo mouthpiece, we call is 哨子 in chinese, is the biggest factor for the tone, "playability" and everything else. Haha watching you playing brings me back the good old memories, now I'm in my 2nd year of acousticc guitar. Cheers!

I'm personally moved when you spent the time to look up the story behind the lyrics of Jiu'Er. Also you literally learned SuoNa and Chinese. A fellow viewer's comment on B-site said it all: "it feels so good when our culture is understood." Hope to see you more often on B-site and wish you all the best!

I'm so glad Joe is trying this out. Suo Na is such a traditional instrument, it almost faded out of public's sight as modern music becomes more dominant in the last several decades. You could only hear them more in northwestern countryside. Me, as a kid who grew up in a relatively small city in China, I've only heard it live 1 or 2 times in my whole life. If there's any way I could be of help on helping you learn it or any other Chinese instrument, feel free to just comment below.

I think the first step would be to watch videos on how to start the oboe, since that would help you control a double reed. The principles should be the same.
I thought you did fairly well for a first try.
I need a fingering chart for a cornetto. I could start with recorder charts and see how that goes.
I could also recommend the yueqin.Traditionally it should have two pair of strings, but new ones frequently have four single strings.
I don't recommend the shuangqin, which is basically a longer version. The shuangqin is obsolete and unavailable commercially. i had to build my own.

Some other Chinese wind instruments that might interest you: 管子 [guan3 zi] (1:46, short instrument on the right in the first view, The Funeral March) and 塤 [xun1]. Xun looks like an egg with holes in it. It is a very old instrument and produces sounds that reminds one of ancient times (I don't know how better to describe it). It is a very quiet and contemplative instrument that also feels a bit melancholy. Oh yeah, and there is the hand-held pipes 笙 [sheng1] (though those of the lower ranges can't really be carried around while playing).

I'm a Chinese and can't speak English very well. I can only use translation software. I met you at station B and saw your message below kesund's video on the oil pipe. I found that it's really you. I like you very much and your comments on Chinese music. I've paid attention to you. I hope you can make a better video in the future.

In fact, this is a traditional Iranian musical instrument that was introduced to China through the Silk Road in ancient times.

    建议Joe可以在中国的 哔哩哔哩 上面上传视频,顺便也可以找到一些你需要的教学视频,主要是很多中国朋友都特别喜欢你
It is suggested that Joe can upload videos on bilibili in China. By the way, you can also find some teaching videos you need, mainly because many Chinese friends like you very much

I'm Chinese, born and raised. The mistake of this video is, however, Suo Na is not a traditional Chinese instrument, though it is used in a lot of Chinese music pieces. It is actually an instrument introduced into China at around either Han or Tang dynasty via Silk Road. (I don't remember which one).

I don't think it is wrong to say that it is a traditional Chinese instrument when Chinese has been using it for 2 thousand years. However, we do acknowledge that it originated from ancient Persia.
