I think that queers (or even a being a woman when you look at the whole history of electronic music) are attracted to electronic music because you don't need an orchestra or a band to make music. You can do it all by yourself and with the internet, you can even promote it without a label. So, all the road blocks are removed and you can let your creativity flow to reach a wide audience.

One correction: YMCA isn't about a hookup, it's about a safe place where young boys can get some food and shelter if they're homeless because their parents kicked them out for being gay.

Many lgbt people feel pressured by society and there loved ones to conform, so declaring independence from others' expectations can be liberating and empowering

The Kinks are so underrated. Their music is so good. When people DO talk about them, their queerness is never mentioned.
They wrote several LGBT themed songs, or songs that mention queerness. To name a few: Lola, David Watts, Life on the Road (it has a certain line), Party Line (kind of), Dedicated Follower of Fashion (has an implication), Out of The Wardrobe, Wonderboy (sort of), See My Friends…
Not to mention, all members of the band were very open minded. David Davies, brother of Ray Davies (the lead vocalist), is bisexual. I read his autobiography, and he talked about going to hotels with either a woman or a man on his arm.

The history of gay classical music is actually really fascinating. While we can't know for sure that some composers were gay, bi, or lesbian, we have some likely candidates. Handel is often suspected to have been bi for example.
Tchaikovsky was almost certainly gay, and many of his works express unrequited love. Eugene Onegin's tragic love story of duty over love (when read through a queer lens) is very indicative of how Tchaikovsky felt about love, duty, and passion as related and contrasting forces (pay particular attention to the way that the fable mentioned in act 1 plays out as a queer metaphor in Tchaikovsky's own experience- "habit is a gift from heaven to take the place of happiness")
Then a little later, many composers are more explicitly LGBT (Benjamin Britten's love of tenor Peter Pears was a poorly kept secret, Aaron Copland- who helped define a quintessentially "American" sound didn't make too many efforts to hide that he was gay, Ethel Smyth was a great composer, suffragette, and was infatuated with many women including Virginia Woolf).
It may not read as interestingly as modern gay music history, but the history of gay, bi, and lesbian classical composers is fascinating in its own right.

I wish that was actually true... I read Rob Halford's biography recently and he said it the style wasn't taken specifically from the gay BSDM scenes at the time, although I can't remember exactly what the reasoning was. However, that doesn't change the fact that the entire aesthetic of 50+ years of heavy metal style were based off of a gay man's idea. Especially talking about how gay people really set the styles for certain movements.
There are a lot of latino/hispanic gay anthems like A quien le importa by Thalia, Amante bandido by Miguel Bose and Todos me miran by Gloria Trevi and they are absolute bangers that speak about being free and not caring about outside validation. Loved the video btw!

the fact that Madonna wasn't mentioned here is a CHOICE. I mean, of course not every artist would be mentioned, but Madonna's music was not only the biggest soundtrack to what was probably the most dramatic lgbtq+ moment (the aids crisis), she was one of the first openly supporters of the community, including many of gay's culture in her music and ambuiguity

As a huge fan of punk and metal myself, I could never comprehend how a scene born out of the opposition to the oppressive nature of mainstream society could become so oppressive and homophobic themselves. I still love all the music and the scene, despite its very obvious flaws, but any punk in their right mind should know that being yourself and saying "fuck you" to whoever wants to get rid of your right to exist, is the most punk thing you can do.

Amazing. I feel like learning about how a lot of the music I listened to, even if only background noise as a kid, was queer, I might have been more creative and open minded as a kid. Might’ve learned I was queer before the later half of high school. The fact that queers have always been here, have always been expressing themselves in various creative ways and making music, that makes me feel happy. I lost it at “I was crying in my room the other day”
Scissor Sisters was the queer music that was most important for me as a teenager. I had never heard such openly queer music before, and it played on the radio! (In europe, at least, from what I understand they were more popular here than in America). I didn’t even fully realize I was bisexual until I was in my early twenties, but I have loved queer media from a very young age.

it's kinda sad how a lot of punk is homophobic, when a lot of the 'ancestors' of the movement were queer or used 'queer aesthetics' like lou reed, patti smith, the new york dolls (perhaps it is more accurate that bsdm is the movement that actually influenced punk and not gay liberation but it can be said that these two movements kinda intersected at that time) especially song like gloria or redondo beach by patti smith mean a lot to me because they are so unapologetically wlw.

As a gay Asian guy who's into House music (the nowaday kind of House which has honestly turned very white and straight over time), I felt delighted when I first learned about the queer black root of House music in my university Electronic Music course. Thank you so much for mentioning DJ Knuckles and Ron Hardy in this video! And it's so exciting to know many of these genres' creators are queer black artists. (And I never knew Wendy Carlos is a trans woman before holy shit why did they never teach me...)

Speaking of the glam rock style though, I was at one of my dads gigs where he was doing bass for this glam rock band who did Bowie, T-rex and Slade and I waa recording and thinking to myself "I dont remember there being a woman in this band" and it was my dad. My very straight, very masculine dad in a golds womans flared shirt, silver and rainbow platform heels and a wig.
He's so proud of how well he walks in those heels.

I felt Are They Gay kind of skipped over the complexity of Carlos's career. Although experiencing gender dysphoria since childhood, and beginning hormonal transition in 1968, their breakthrough album in that year, "Switched On Bach", earning three Grammy awards, was released under the name Walter Carlos, which is how I first learned of them. They had attended college and grad school presenting as male (studying as a physics and music composition major in the '60s was nearly exclusively male), and had their historic collaboration with Moog in developing the keyboard synthesizer as male. They maintained this presentation publicly through many other high points of their career, including collaboration with Leonard Bernstein, meeting with Stanley Kubrick and scoring his film A Clockwork Orange, and making an appearance on the Dick Cavett show In 1970. They were able to earn enough money from their work to start gender confirmation surgery in 1972, but released two more albums under the name Walter Carlos in 1973 and 1975. The stress of maintaining this double life must have been exhausting. One wonders if any of this would have been possible for them had they come out as trans during those years. She did not come out as trans or present herself as a woman until 1979. Please forgive the pronoun changes, but I wanted the reader to understand the great achievements, under a tremendous amount of personal turmoil, that Carlos accomplished.

lets not forget. queerness massively changed the style of dress for metal fans, with Judas Priest (who's lead singer was gay) bringing in gay leather biker aethetics to the style.
Rob Halford from Judas Priest in the 70s and 80s basically gave metal the denim and leather aesthetic that was taken from the leather daddy scene and bikers, he also has a very camp and over the top performance style that has been popularised in stuff like power metal and NWOBHM. He was one of the first prominent figures in metal to come out as gay although he had to do it in the late 90s due to homophobia in the genre.
There was also the famous cabaret scene in germany, pre ww2 germany . With drag and all that.O yess berlin. And praise musics first catlady. Lesbian avengers.

If I may recommend my own musical hero to you, his name is Jeremy Dutcher, and he is (and I mean this as a compliment) the prettiest man I've ever seen. Not only that, but he's intelligent. See, he's Indigenous, and his native language, Wolastoq, is almost dead, so he sings every song he has in Wolastoq in the interest of keeping his culture alive. Excellent example of intersectionality. His EP is called (and stick with me here) "Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa", and you can find it on TH-cam. No, I don't know how to say it either. I only know that the translation is "The Songs of the Beautiful River People". At least check out his song "Mehcinut". Like I say, none of his work is in English, but even though you can't understand it, it's still gold.
Pastor Carl Bean a Gay civil rights activist had a song Born this Way in 1975. Gaga acknowledged him on her 10th anniversary edition of Born this Way this year. He deserves so much more.

That said, i wanted to talk about António Variações. He was a portuguese queer hairdresser and singer/songwriter during the early 80s who challenged predominantly homophobic and sexist portugal. He loved men and had a very flamboyant style (search his pics). He mixed a lot of genres (mainly pop, rock, blues, and fado, a typical portuguese music who mainly focuses on melancholy and longing - the word "fado" means fate in portuguese!) and was a success in the queer underground scene, especially in lisbon. His biggest hit song, "Canção de Engate" (hookup song ? its the best translation i could come up) is wildly appreciated. Unfortunately, António Variações died in 1984 from pneumonia, who people suspect was caused by his infection with hiv/aids. Still, his cultural impact is still felt to this day, and serves as an inspiration to many artists (for example, Conan Osíris and Fado Bicha, the last reclaiming even a portuguese homophobic slur and blending traditional fado with the queer experience). If you wanna know more about him, in 2019 it was released a biopic of him called "Variações"!

No forget who if Brian Epstein (who was gay and jewish in the England 60s, a very complicated thing) no decided to meet that young musicians who were the Beatles in first place, the story of rock and pop music would had been very different.
