Trying RUTT'S HUT "America's Best Hot Dog!" Worth The Hype?
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 3 ต.ค. 2024
- Every list that ranks the best hot dogs in America will include Rutt's Hut on it. The iconic New Jersey restaurant has been serving rippers for several decades, called rippers because their hot dogs are deep fried in oil until they "rip" or burst open. America is already the hot dog capital of the world, and the Chicago style hot dog alone is a great achievement, so Chicago alone likely has many of the best hot dogs in the USA. But out of all the hot dogs in New York and Chicago, Rutt's Hut in Clifton, New Jersey consistently ranks as among the best hot dog stands in America and one of the best hot dog stands in the world. Is it truly that great?
We set out today to see if Rutt's Hut truly is all it's cracked up to be and one of the best restaurants in New Jersey. We try the famous Rutt's Hut relish and the Rutt's Hut cheese sauce to go along with the deep fried dogs. We have had many great hot dogs on this channel, such as Boulevard Drinks in Jersey City and Walter's Hot Dog Stand in Westchester, NY. Will Rutt's Hut live up to its name as the GOAT hot dog?

Nice to see that you don’t always have to go to fancy places.

It’s good for the country.
He does quite a bit. Am I wrong?
My mother graduated Clifton high school in 1946 and was married to my father in 1948 and the first place they had their date was Rutts Hut… Me personally my favorite hotdog is Hank franks on Route 46 E. I used to work at HONEYWELL and Teterboro for many years and I would stop there a couple of times a week before I went to work or after I was leaving work… I also met Jason Biggs there the star of all the American pie movies at Hanks Frank’s❤
You didn't work at Honeywell, but I understand some of your points. Thanks
Rutts hut hot dogs are legendary. I haven't had every hot dog in the country so I cant call them the best. But since I ate my first one 58 yrs ago, I never felt the need to try and top them. In fact, the best texas weiner was right across the street at Bertlins. They closed maybe 50 yrs ago. I now live 3 hrs away at the shore, but I still make that relish at home. It used to be better, in fact. But it is still amazing. It was once called German Cabbage relish. Its mostly cabbage. And the secret ingredient is Turmeric. Mustard seed too.
Keep the reviews coming. Its nice to see you review places I've been too. I especially liked the Borgata Buffet review! And thanks for not wearing an Eagles hat during this review!

OMG - My dad used to take me to Rutt’s Hut when I was a kid! I would only eat the hot dog, not the bun, because it was too much for me. Great memories.
I grew up in New Jersey and my grandparents lived about five minutes from Rutts. I've been there 100's of times and it is the best. If you eat outside by the river, look out for the seagulls who will aggressively come after your ripper. They'll also require you to visit the car wash too!😆
I'm in Maine and one of the Lobster places with outdoor tables the same thing with the Seagulls..... Car wish thing is also real....
Great review on this place UA, but your puns are the "wurst", lol
Thank you for being "frank" with me
Darn right UA! Don't take no s##t from anyone!

@@uaeats I'll be "frank" with you if you'll be "earnest" with me. So, how you doing Earnest?
I grew up in Delawanna across from the main gate of Givaudan chemical so Rutts was always just a stones throw away. All the years I lived there, I never had a hot dog, I always had the barbeque beef or hamburgers and onion rings. My mom worked at a place across the street until Mr. Rutt himself drove up to her as she was walking to work and offered her a job. She worked at Rutts for a few years until we moved.
I grew up all over being a Military brat , born in the Midwest . We always put beans in the chili , I think originally it started as a filler to make the chili go farther when you had less meat or a lesser quality meat . I did live in Texas a couple years and enjoy the red chili as well , but there the beef is more abundant and a bit less expensive . I like a good slaw dog and chili dog . Never been a fan of vinegar or anything pickled so I never use or eat relish , just a personal preference . Enjoy the channel since I came across it a few weeks ago
@larrycomer ::
I hear ya about the pickles.
What about sweet relish❔️
Oh, man❕️sweet relish and hot sweet mustard on a hot dog. Nothing like it late at night after a bar closes.
I used to only go to Gray';s Papaya on W72nd St cause they were the only one in nYC offering Gulden's Spicy Brown Dijon mustard with horseradish. best mustard ever. Unfortunately Gulden's stopped making it 7 years ago lol
That cheese looks like straight up a kraft slice.
It def is.
Looked like melted Velveeta to me.
I think I’ve commented before, but you’ve gotta try the hot dogs in upstate New York. They make local brands of dogs
Hoffman’s (Syracuse), Sahlen’s (Buffalo) and my favorite Zweigel’s (Rochester). Even niche sausage suppliers like Liehs & Steigerwald. And of course Gianelli Italian sausages.
You can find these brands served at local diners like Ted’s or Louie’s in Buffalo, Don’s Original, Bill Gray’s or Schaller’s (among others) in Roch and Heid’s near Syracuse.
You have to take a food tour to try a garbage plate in Roch, wings and beef on weck in Buffalo. Trust me👍
I second this! Roc and Cuse have great food. Get that white hot dog in the Roc! Buffalo's wings are the best!
I grew up across the river from Rutt's. Went there a few months ago, after a long hiatus. Hasn't changed in 50 plus years. No chili dogs, so I get a side of chili and wing it. The relish is legendary. Best chili dogs are at the Hot Grill, not far from there. and fries with gravy.
Love the honesty. Keep it real, because that’s what makes your channel unique!
You are the best foodie channel! We love you. Simple, honest, direct. Regards from Mexico!
Thank you!
UA. I've noticed that you keep on complaining about a lack of sa!t. Is it possible that you have a high tolerance for salt. I am the opposite. I prefer lower salted foods. Thank you.
Yup, almost all restaurants over salt their foods and many people build a tolerance to it. I'd rather be served under salted foods and salt to my liking, because the opposite is impossible.
He really needs to calm down on the salt, there's a ton of flavor in chili
Facts guaranteed that meals already way over the daily sodium recommendation 😂
He needs soy sauce 😂
Agree 100%. Most restaurants over-salt their food. I would rather taste the actual food and then add a bit of salt if needed..
So glad you scraped off the cheese so you could enjoy the dog with the relish.
For a rivaling hot dog, I highly recommend trying Texas Weiner 1 in Plainfield NJ that's been in business since 1924 or J & G Texas Weiners in Dunellen NJ since 1977. Their hotdogs don't have the ripper effect, but they are griddled to perfection that results in a wicked snap crunch on every bite. Ask for the Texas Weiner hotdog traditional and careful not to try other Hotdog places called Texas Weiners. These two locations keep the Texas Weiner style traditional and authentic: the hot dog is foot long, chili is unbelievably good, and hot dog is griddled for hours NEVER FRIED!!!
Awesome vlog channel, Dude!
I live in the next town over to Plainfield. I’ve seen the place but never stopped by. Will give it a shot now after your comment.
Fun fact: The relish is made from cabbag and carrots. No pickles involved! Ballistic BBQ did a really great video on the recipe for the relish using the original owner's recipe for it from the 50s. I want to make it, but I'm super jealous you are getting it from the source!!
Wow, thanks for the trivia! 🙌
I always thought it was made from cauliflower. It’s not good.
You should have ate on other side sit down service. 3 rippers cheese fries and cup of chili. Use it as topping w relish & mustard
Yesterday, I reurned to home in Newark, NJ from a 5 week stay in Central Europe. The food there was universaly fresh, not processed, and of very high quality. One of the first things I did when I got back was buy some cheap hot dogs and crappy buns. Sometimes, you gotta have junk food. I lived 10 minutes from Rut's Hut. About the same distance fron Dicky Dee's in Newark . I have never been (much to my shame) to either of them. I'm trying to mend my ways
If you go to Rutts you are definitely eating garbage!
You wait so long to eat it it's already cold the cheese is already getting a skin on it you need to eat faster so the food is hot
I just said the same thing. Omg. He can't stop talking nonsense and then the food is finally cold.
@@ginamarshall7691 if he eats a bit first instead of all the analysis he can get the full experience of the food hot then you can go in to your thoughts and say everything else after but eat the food hot when it's first served!
Gotta try them, thank for posting, Idk but when u fry a dog it brings out so much flavor..
They have new menu boards, I was there a few weeks ago and they still had the old boards. Great review! I have been going to this for many years!
When you look constipated the food is good LOL
I am born and raised in NY and have lived in NY City for 47 years. I am a Hot Dog Freak!! For me the best hot dog is Papaya King on 72nd Street and Broadway. Simple and perfect. I hope you try it out. Get the special which is 2 hot dogs and a Papaya drink. I love watching your videos. Thanks for them.
They have a good natural casing all beef hot dog that is made by Marathon Industries in NJ. 10 to a pound. We used the same hot dog in Pittsburgh but we had 6 to a pound. It is the best quality hot dog made IMHO.
Bro, you have lived in NY for 47 years and think papaya king is on 72nd and Broadway? The o.g. papaya king is on 86th and 3rd. You're thinking of Gray's papaya.😂
72nd/Broadway is GRAYS PAPAYA
not Papaya King.
Isnt papaya king closed? That's what it shows on yelp anyway
@@CrabbinFever 72nd/Broadway is GRAYS PAPAYA
I see ua video pop up.
I watch and like.
Ua is wholesome.
As a Mamaroneck kid, I agree -- Walter's makes much better hot dogs with better ingredients (their own blend of pork, veal and beef not ground too fine) and a much better cooking method (split and cooked on a flat top on melted butter so the outsides brown perfectly), all on better buns also perfectly browned on the flat top.
Agree with all that!
I heard they were excellent. Do you ever try the hot dogs in Rockport, Maine?
@@BaahBen No. Any specific place(s) you recommend? How are they made? What do you like about them?
I like my hot dogs with mustard and sauerkraut and maybe bacon bits.
Thats the way to go......I would substtute the bits for onions, but hey to each their own.
Mustard & sauerkraut 😊
I like mine with just ketchup. Y’all’s need to catch up!😂

Mustard and saurkraut is the standard for any good Hot dog. But Rutts is famous for the Ripper and relish.
Rookie !! Been going to Rutts since mid 60's ! Its all about the relish and fries . Menu was simple then and you ate on the hood of your car ! Gotta get the well done rippers!! Mom's favorite. Since you've done Rutts now ya gotta do the Hot Grill. Two all the way two and one frenchy one with gravy ! ❤
Relish and fries?? Ok……you sound like the rookie. 😂 but id give it a try if I could travel back to the 60s. 😂 but I cook at home so none of those places can even match what I make.😊
@@ChickenThug55 oh your the home chef. Excuse me !! Fyi relish is on the hot dog not the fries dude !
@@johnkovalicky3389 go re read. Who said relish on fries? 😂
That relish looks distinctly like Piccadilly which is a traditional English mustard pickle with assorted vegetables in.
Close, but it's actually "piccalilli".
Piccadilly? You must mean Piccalilli? Piccalilli is defined as a UK interpretation of South Asian Pickles! Piccadilly is a Street in the City of Westminster in England it’s considered part of London! The Relish looking at it is Piccalilli!
@@ianm2170 Autocorrect, but yes Piccalilly. Since I live in London and have a Jar of it in my fridge I can assure you I know the difference !

Just had Ruts Hutt for first time a few weeks ago, excellent Hot Dog, probably the best relish I’ve ever had, but my favorite hotdog in Jersey in my opinion is at Hiram’s Roadstand in Fort Lee. First stop on the Anthony Bourdain food trail. You’ll love it UA, also get their amazing burger sliders too. Also, both Rutt’s and Hiram’s use Thumanns as their hotdog supplier, the best hot dog for deep frying money can buy.
That’s what I’m going to check out Hiram’s was my go to in HS in 1968.. Let’s see what Rutts Hut is next Friday.
Hirams is so much better than Rutts. They cook their dogs way in advance and let them sit there then they stick them back in and they are gross!
Love Rutt’s Hut! They’re one of the best in Jersey!
The dogs look like smoked sausage or what they call in Chicago a Polish sausage.
When you get a Chicago polish it is also deep fried.
Personally i like the distinction between an all beef hot dog like the Vienna dogs in Chicago vs the smoked pork sausage.
That said I would still love these Rutt's dogs and that relish looks really good.
I agree the ripper and relish is fantastic. I disagree that the bun is bland. Their buns have a tang (maybe buttermilk?) that makes them better than local competitors like Hot Grill. They’re also not bad reheated the next day, but they are best enjoyed right in the parking lot.
Best Hot Dogs are at Stewart’s Root Beer in Rahway, NJ .. get a bacon cheese dog and a chili dog with mustard and onions
I can request a review of Hiram's in Fort Lee? Bourdain's favorite spot in NJ.
Yeah, if he wants more flavor/salt, Hiram’s is the way to go. A bit saltier and with more spice (not as in spicey, just a tad more use of spices).
But I do love Rutt’s Hut relish.
Don't bring anymore douchebags into the area
Watching food reviewers who know nothing about food can be extremely challenging at times, but hopefully he’s learning as he goes
Used to live in NJ and worked near Rutt's Hut. I do think it's America's Best Hot Dog.
Keep it up UA! You have the best reviews on many places
Great great Texas Weiners at Johnny & Hanges who've been around since 1939 originally in Paterson but now at nearby Fair Lawn NJ. Aslo great Texas Weiners at Hot Grill in Clifton NJ. Would love to hear your expert takes on both places.
Love the deep fried hot dogs. I need to make the road trip, thanks for the post my dude!
can easily home make in oil
There was a place called Hot Doug's in Chicago 10-15 years ago and it was insane. They had really exotic flavor combos that really worked.
I remember. Dam they blew portillios out of the water.

UA Ate there last month...love to go in the other sit-down side..its so cool and old school.
We had Rippers and cheese with chili and fries and a beer...it's definitely an awesome place.
Great job. Have eaten there for years. Hot dogs have gotten smaller through the years. Many of us enjoy your channel, keep up the great work.
Thanks! Sad to hear the hot dogs have shrank
Rutt’s Hut is awesome ! I love a ripper with cheese
You do not like Hiram's?
Next you have to go to the Hot Grill in Clifton. Get a few all the way dogs. Then try the chili cheese burger. Then get the fries with gravy and cheese. That's the line up to test there. Also great roast beef sandwich with gravy and cheese, that's a secret hidden gem there. Rutts and Grill are direct competition and die hard customers on both sides.
I make chilli with lots of chilli, unsweetened cocoa, lots of salt, pepper, mushrooms, tomatoes, kidney beans, corn, beef, vinegar, chilli flakes, onions, celery, I might cool it down with sour cream and grated cheddar. It should almost make you cry.
Love your vids UA , in my opinion Rutts Hut is the #1 hot dog , but of course you must have the relish , the potato salad & coleslaw are tops also. If you’re ever in Cali you must try my #2 hot dog at Pinks in LA. Keep up the great job !
He needs to venture abroad and show us the viewers his true amazement. That’s what we love as well as your critical tasting
A good relish is awesome on a dog, nice job ordering it
I miss going to Gray's Papaya under the Sleepy's.
I like the chill at RUTT'S HUT
No sauerkraut? No mustard? That's insane bro
UA lacks a sophisticated palette.
Mustard 6:35
Rutts Hutt isn't known for that style of hot dog. Assuming you've never been
never heard of a hot dog with Sauerkraut..at least here in Chicago
Most people don't put sauerkraut on hot dogs, usually that's for sausages like a kielbasa.
A mix of the relish with mustard is best. Also the recipe foe the relish is online. It was printed in an old newspaper article.
Kudos for not putting ketchup on it. Mustard and relish is the way to go
I didnt really notice your accent befire, but the way you say "hot dog" is so All American that i think you should play Cap in an Avengers cartoon. It made me smile every time
Three ways: In and Out, Ripped and Crucified. All good.
I mean cremated. Is the bar still open?
"I noticed they had mustard AND relish" imagine at a hot dog place having such a concept. Honestly it's wild you even contemplated eating it plain anyways. Really makes me question your judgement on hot dogs in general lol.
best hot dog ever I live right across the highway!
UA, Review Hiriam's in Fort Lee Nj.
My favorite growing up in Englewood. I used to work at Callahan's.
@@BaahBen I have only had them once from Hiriam's! I was working at a fitness camp in the Poconos and the owner and his girlfriend own a condo in Fort Lee. They brought them back to camp and I thought they were amazing!
@@BaahBenBEST dog I've ever had in my life was Calahann's next door to Hiram's..back in the 80s & 90s. 👍
Try Hirams in Fort Lee
Rutts is classic. They use a natural casing beef pork blend hot dog made for deep frying. Made by Thumanns. If you like rutts relish try slawsa . Similar and sold at markets
Where do you find Slawsa? I’ve been looking for it everywhere and haven’t seen it in years. I could eat that by the spoonful!
By far. The best hot dog I've ever had.
Back in the 80s, Rutt’s used to have a classic car show in the parking lot. I always went with my Chevelle SS.
Their rippers are great, but they also do ‘dipped’ cheeseburgers in gravy and gravy fries. My favorite.
Gotta try this spot. 😮
And the Italian hot dogs @ Jimmy Buffs. Mind blowing. Recently won best of NJ hot dog contest.
Rutt’s Hutt has awesome hot dogs.
We also like Hot Dog Johnny’s in Buttsville, NJ. The hot dogs aren’t as tasty as Rutt’s, but the location is
Very nice on a scenic creek and is a classic stop for hot dog lovers.
Always love the vibe northern NJ gives...like 20 years after some sort of nuclear apocalypse, where buildings and infrastructure are still wasted but some flora is coming back from the ashes
All Rutts dogs are phenomenal! The relish is top notch, however you should have tried the chili. Traditionally they did not offer a chilidog, so you had to order a side of chili in a cup or bowl, however I heard recently they have begun to offer the chilidog...get back there and try one!
What about Hiram's?
Grew up on Nathans in Coney Island Brooklyn, love hot dogs definitely would love to try that relish and make a trip to Rutts hut one day great video UA
Nathans Coney Island is a trip all hot dog lovers should make at least once in their life..... I'd LIRR into NYC than take the subway there... Heaven.
Make your dog the way you like it. NY has the reputation of having the best ever "insert food here". There are so many NY's that have grown up with, and have pride in, their local food. I'm in NC and I have foods that I've grown up with that I think is "the best ever". Eat what you like.
Plus look at those not insane prices . Keep up your great Chanel 👍🏻RK
Now a bunch of douchebags going there to ruin it for everyone
Loved your Walter’s review and much, much preferred their dogs over Rutt’s
I really love Rhutts hut. Is great they also have a sit down dining room and a bar which is separate from the standing side.
I enjoyed your review though since the menu is so large it’s hard to try it all in one visit.
You can have anything dipped in gravy so think cheese burger dipped in brown gravy. You should have tasted the onion rings. I really like the clam chowder, also the fried clams.
Finally The Roasted Duck is pretty famous.
Thanks for the review. As a Texan, I'm legally obligated to tell you that beans do not go in chili. Also, that slaw looked very wet and soupy. Moreso than I care for.
As a fellow Texan I agree with you on everything
Can you get arrested for putting beans in a chili for friends/family? I no contests you are disqualified for 10 years from entering any contests sanctioned by the ICS.
They put cabbage in their relish. It’s probably what gives it that freshness that it’s known for.
Mustard and relish on a ripper is a MUST at Rutt's Hut. Why'd you keep them separate though like that?
the stardew music always hits so hard
My favorite is a Nathan’s hotdog with sauerkraut and mustard from Coney Island.
I made hotdogs at home today and i can say the hotdogs i made at home looked 10 times better and probably tasted better also😊
eating any hotdog without mustard in the minimum on it is sacrilege..no onion almost as sacrilege as mustard..cant do that bro
No lol mustard is sooo nasty
coleslaw on a hotdog is a thing in the south and it good🌭
Nice video Ua you can always add salt you can’t take it away
Nothing better than the Costco hotdog
Now this is a better more relatable review, not just fancy steak houses
agree and these days even more important be wise spending what money we have left.
If ever (unfortunately) find yourself in Maryland, hit Ann's Dairy-Creme on Ritchie Highway in Glen Burnie. Deepfried footlong dogs. Get a double w/ chili, mustard and onions. Shakes and soft serve are great too.
Need to take a trip to Detroit and review a classic coney dog. The OG are Lafayette and American… they are next door to each other so easy to compare.
It's a hot dog. I don't know how much anyone can do with it. The prices seem reasonable though. Cheaper than generic hot dog stand in Manhattan.
IMHO...The best fried hot dog in NJ is at Jolly Nicks in Dumont. Also Hirams in Ft Lee is very good too and they have cold beer for to wash it down. 👍👍👍
Go to Rutts get a ripper with the relish and onion rings with gravy(they are unique). Rinse repeat! UA you have to go to Hot Grill next to settle the legendary argument.
I hate it when food testers let the food sit and get cold before their first bite
That all looks so perfect for me. At first I thought the dogs might be too well done, but by your description and seeing it after the bite, I don't think so. The cole slaw & potato salad made me drool, I can always eat 4 servings worth of those two items.
For me, the top place in NJ is Jolly Nick's in Dumont, NJ...get the "Red Hot"...it is the best!
Nice review UA. Bun looked wicked dry. Thank you!

The bun tastes generic and the cheese is just common American cheese. For $2.70 are you expecting to find Gordon Ramsey standing in the kitchen kneading dough for the buns and whipping an aged Cotsworld cheddar into the sauce?
I’m a bean girl! Beans are my favorite part of chili.
Wizard fingers!!! (IYKYK)
UA. Please for the love of God you were right around the corner from Hot Grill in Clifton. I was waiting for the side to side comparison. Give it a whirl.
