Thank you for coming! Our Original Tomato Pie has grated pecorino on the top, with crushed Italian tomatoes (picked at ripeness just for us from farms in Naples) and imported olive oil. We're so happy you enjoyed our charred apizza. Your smile has made our day.
I was gonna comment you should have hit Sally’s until I saw this. So instead I commented the giggle factor of “wordos” I like to call them. Typos but you say them out loud. But yes, go to Sally’s. It’s number 1 in my book for apizza
for dessert you should have walked 50ft out the door to Libby's for some Italian Ice. Also Pepe uses fresh Mozz. And Foxon Park tastes the way it does due to the fact it ALL natural ingredients
You can get lots of great pizza here, some as good or better than either Pepe’s or Sally’s without having to wait. I understand people go for the “I did the thing” but if you are just looking to enjoy pizza, waiting in line for either place ain’t worth it.
Hey just a heads up.. the tomato pie doesn’t come with cheese on the bottom, it’s supposed to be just chunky sauce with some parm on top. Cheese on the bottom is called an “upside down” pie. I’m from Jersey too and Trenton is famous for tomato pies as well 👍

That’s the location of the two most over hyped pizza places. To me Pepe’s is very dry and not much flavor. Sally’s is burnt and it kills all the flavor. There are tons of great pizza places in Fairfield county that are as good if not better and non of them burn the pizza. If you like it burnt those places can certainly achieve that for you. The Summer Tomato Pie is really good. It's technically a white pie since there's no sauce, but the tomatoes more than make up for it. They have a local farm that grows all the tomatoes for the summer tomato pie, so the tomatoes are at peak freshness. My go-to pie at Pepe's is a bacon and onion. Pepe's cuts their onion in a lrage dice, which I prefer to sknny, stringy rings or slivers. If you liked the OG tomato pie at Pepe's, you'll like Sally's version also. Sally's pies are more sauce heavy and cheese light. Sally's is known for their potato and rosemary pie. I'm not a fan of it, since I find the potatoes tend to be underdone, but lots of people like it. New Haven style has crust which is denser and chewier than NY style. But you're right, it's all about the greasy, charred, crispy crust! Oh, and the Foxon Park soda flavor to get is birch beer, which is kinda like a clear root beer.

Pepe’s is my favorite for sure. Been to numerous locations many many times. New Haven coal fired is my favorite style. I tried sallys for the first time recently and I liked it but I found their sauce to be way too sweet. Happy eating

Frank Pepe opened a few years ago here in Maryland. I generally enjoy their pies, but am worried because their location in a nearby shopping mall around when the pandemic was on the way to being over, still does not draw enough people around the clock.
Went to the Bethesda, Maryland location. Waited 45 minutes for my pizza and it came out incorrect even after the waiter and Chef confirmed my order. Wasn't going to wait another 45 minutes. Still charged us for our sodas. Horrible customer service!
i have to disagree. they both were flop centrai, the crust looked so greasy, the half and half looked very unprofesionally made, the other just looked like tomato sauce on bread
Did you try Zupardis? Did you try other places? Did you try Pepe and/or Sally’s? What did you think. I’m from Connecticut (two towns south west of New Haven) and have had lots of different pizza, and Pepe’s is my least favorite and Sally’s is second to it. Pepes and Sally's are definitely on my list next time I'm in NY, ill definitely make the side trip . I'm currently trying all the pizza spots in Vegas and posting video. Lots of NY owned pizza spots so ive found 5 or 6 that are pretty solid
Ah beets! Haven't been down to pepes in a few years but the original location is legendary. They have since opened quite a few satellite locations but they aren't the same as the new haven location.
I live in the next town over from New Haven. On the Foxon Park soda, they're a tiny little local conpany and I like them and drink their diet stuff almost weekly. They do have a bit of inconsistency when it comes to their carbonation IMO. Ive opened their diet birch beer and had it explode on me after it was sitting in a fridge for days, and I've had some that were almost flat. But generally they're fine IMO.
I have been blessed because truly great pizza in the New York area is almost never more than 5 or 6 minutes away. That said, I truly love going to Frank Pepe’s and it’s certainly worth the 150 minute drive from my home in Suffolk County. And if the weather’s good, traversing Long Island Sound by ferry makes the trip even more enjoyable. The old school fresh tomato pie is spectacularly good. It’s seasonal and if you order it in the second half of August you’ll get it at its best. You might want to plan your next visit with that in mind. But the wondrous old school fresh tomato pie pales in comparison to Frank Pepe’s fresh clam white pie. I was so saddened that your allergies made sampling the fresh clam white pie to risky to try. If you ever happen upon a way to eliminate the risk, please return to Frank Pepe’s and enjoy why I (and many others) believe that the fresh clam white pie is simply the best pizza on the planet. By the way, I think menu’s mention of the possibility of encountering pieces of clam shell foretell the pie’s excellence. The clams arriving in the pie just brought to your table were almost certainly in local waters not more than 8 hours ago and they were shucked on premises not more than a few minutes before they landed on what was to be your pie.
In my experience, really good root beer is usually way less carbonated than, say, a Coke. I think this is intentional. If you don't prefer that, totally cool, but I think the idea may have been to make it feel like a luxury product since soda syrup is relatively expensive, and carbonated water is relatively cheap. I have no idea if this is true! But it's what I've always assumed, and personally, I love flatter root beers. I don't need all that fizz, gimme a little fizz and a ton of flavor!
That kinda makes sense. I think if they were going the less fizzy route I get that, but I found this flavor to be kinda overly sweet. But just my taste personally. I felt if it were going to be that sweet more carbonation would balance it more. Perhaps that's just my taste though
@@uaeats Yeah, I get it. In my experience, the better root beers I was referring to tend to be less sweet to the point that some people find it insufficiently sweet. That's how I like 'em, but to each their own! Totally agree that the sweetness / carbonation balance is important.

I'm a big fan of the New Haven/coal fired style in general. But I haven't tried enough of the different places that specialize in it to tell you which is best.
A real pizza oven can't be beat, be it wood fired, coal, or whatever. Hands down it beats any of those "conveyor belt" pizza cooking machines. I hate the indentations they leave in the under carriage of your crust. Give me an oven baked pizza any day any time! Thanks for the review EA! The pizzas look amazing.
Still can't believe you ranked the cheese slice at supreme so highly. That pizza is the epitome of an average NY slice. But you are earning my trust back UA.

new haven coal fired pizza... yums!
Road trip... Jersey City to New Haven. 🚗
I'm from CT and it's
true that Foxon Park
is a less carbonated
soda than something like
Coke.
I have eaten there years ago, and remember enjoying it. I had the clam pie. However, I'll still take my NYC pizza any day!
You GOTTA try Luigi's in Park Slope. Best slice shop in the city!
Facts
A real pizza oven can't be beat, be it wood fired, coal, or whatever. Hands down it beats any of those "conveyor belt" pizza cooking machines. I hate the indentations they leave in the under carriage of your crust. Give me an oven baked pizza any day any time! Thanks for the review EA! The pizzas look amazing.
Surely, you mean charcoal, not coal. Great show, beautiful pizza.
Try Spumoni Gardens in Brooklyn....Make sure you get the square, not the regular slice
Here in Plymouth Ma we're covered.
You need to try putting Tabasco sauce on pepperoni pizza
You should do a trip to Boston for some reviews
Still can't believe you ranked the cheese slice at supreme so highly. That pizza is the epitome of an average NY slice. But you are earning my trust back UA.
Do they sell by the slice?
We have a Frank Pepe’s here in Maryland. It is solid. And also never that crowded. The 3 for $45 is a great deal! I always get that and bring the leftovers home for dinner
*I’m not a fan of their pepperoni. It’s too strong and salty for me. I like the one with peppers and onions
That tomato pie is beautiful!
I'm from Philly and have always wanted to try Pepe's & Sally's in New Haven but a bit too far... However, I do like NY style pizza and believe it or nor of the many times I've been to NYC I have never had even a slice... You mentioned your fav spots in NY in this video, can you list the 2-3 that you recommend most in NYC bc I'll make it a bucket list item ;-) TIA !!
Have you gone to Patsy’s yet? The original one in Harlem. That to me, is my favorite pizza as a native New Yorker. I am partial to Joe’s on carmine, only because I am around there so frequently. But whenever I am anywhere near Harlem I make sure to stop by Patsy’s. I can nearly finish an entire pie myself and I’m only 140 pounds.
I have had hundreds of slices from Patsy's, it is my favorite as well. I do think John's Bleeker is the bets in NYC
