Being a practitioner of Southern Shaolin Kung Fu (Nan Shaolin/Nan Sil Lum) I have learned a great deal about the Wing Chun/Yong Chun system. I was actually surprised that you talked about the late Yip Sifu's addiction to Opium. According to the First Cousin of my late Master of the Jow Ga/Chau Ga system Dean Chin (Chin Yuk Jeun) told me that, while he was learning the Choy Li Fut system from his Sifu on the Kowloon side of Hong Kong, it was an open secret that Yip Sifu was known as a smoker of Opium. My Si Suk ( Younger Uncle) said that after Yip Man died in 1972, many of Yip Sifu's students were all going around saying that, only they had learned the Real Secrets from Yip Man. Because of this, many Master's/Sifu's from other styles were all saying to themselves, how do they know what they got from Yip Man was correct, since he was high off of Opium much of the time. Regardless the Wing Chun system can lay claim to having two of the most famous Masters of Martial Arts within the 20th Century. Yip Man and Bruce Lee (Lee Siu Lung).👍
@@smr144 Where did you get that information from? He did not collaborate with the Japanese. Exactly like in the first movie he fought with a few of them in competitions. After winning all his fights the Japanese insisted that Yip Man teach their troops but Yip Man refused and ran and hid in the forests as even he could not fight the guns of the Japanese.
It was in Yip’s latter years that he became addicted. He was pretty much retired from teaching at this stage and the teachings in his school was being carried out by the senior students. In part this was why Bruce wasn’t taught directly by Yip Man when he returned from the states.
Yip was and will remain a very highly regarded Kung fu master. Not much fact in the movies but fun to watch. There are many documented accounts of his senior students. As well as video of their teachings.
fun facts: IP Man fled to HK when the CCP banned martial arts on mainland (for fear of being overthrown), IP Man became an opium smoker in HK and a kung fu sifu
Great video. I love martial arts lore and you delivery it with such respect. Also I love your choice in sweater color. Goes well with your collared shirt and blends well with the background choice. Also I’m the guy who called you out on your worn out t-shirt collar in a previous video. I apologize again for that. Keep doing what you’re doing. Your videos make me happy.
Lee created Jeet Kune Do, which I think was a good move rather than continuing to argue with other kung fu masters who were reluctant to teach the art to Americans/Europeans.
This is honestly extremely well done. Surprised to see mention of Yuen Kay San. Good job on the research. Only thing that really stands out is the claim of opium smoking, which only comes from Leung Siu Hung. Ma Hang Lum, one of Yip Man's senior disciples (still alive at 87!), has publicly refuted this claim quite often. Very good video. My YKS buddy will be happy to see you gave YKS a shout out.
@learnchinesenow no, thank you for putting such care and serious research into this video. Never seen your channel before and I was expecting the usual TH-cam quick wrong vid, not something you clearly put effort into. As a 3rd generation student under Yip Man's first disciple, thank you for your care and diligence!
Bruce Lee was taught Ving Tsun by Wong Shun Leung, the ‘king of talking hands’, who was a student of Yip and a fighter. Bruce received little to no instruction directly from Yip.
most people got his birth year mixed up bad if you dig into what year he attended St Stephen's. there are no bd or date his final departure on his grave stone oh but there it shows his real name - Ip kai men ( Ye Ji Wen to be politically correct)
My Grandmaster and my last life, Thank you. I am A student Of Keith Fein. Who is a student of Grandmaster Emine Boztepe who is a Student of Grandmaster Leung Ting, Who was direct Student of Yip Man, Who is My last life.
may I know why is that trendy to talk about Yip Man ? Political or business agenda? He wasn't only one who represented the art. May I know? btw, the picture of Leung Bik is not accurate
This is a great video and a fantastic channel! My only problem is the embedded commercial for the CIA/Falun-Gong Anti-China Dance off at the end. I guess next time you can get Fox News to do a bit about how "China wants War" 🙄
Have you seen the show?? It's about China before the CCP's cultural revolution destroyed the great Chinese culture. Anyone who has actually read the history of the culture revolution knows how harm it has done to China's historical legacy. You should educate yourself.
@smr144 China never lost its Culture. It's Culture still defines itself as it has for centuries. The Pro-Western Imperialists that haven't been able to turn China into a Puppet Colony area the only ones blabbering about "China losing its Culture" the same way Bill O'Reilly whined Endlessly about the So-called "War on Christmas" 🤦♂️

Not to mention that allegedly, he was a Japanese collaborator
@@smr144 so it is actually opposite to what is presented in the movie - interesting

That's very old information. It was known decades ago.

Thanks for talking about Ip man, his movies and his martial arts motivates me and aspiring and I will never get bored watching his movies.
I wonder what I Man 5 will be about, since the end of Ip Man 4 was quite final.
Ip Man is already dead in part 4, there is no reason to have a part 5.
fun facts: IP Man fled to HK when the CCP banned martial arts on mainland (for fear of being overthrown), IP Man became an opium smoker in HK and a kung fu sifu
This is great. I've seen every Ip man movie. Even those you didn't mention. Thank you very much. This video is gold.
I am one with the Force and the Force is with me?

Love the martial arts history thanks
The old man in his 70ies playing leung bik is actually the son of yip man! He's still alive and 100 yo
Thats awesome
yip chun is 102 now
Accuracy 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 Well done! 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Lee created Jeet Kune Do, which I think was a good move rather than continuing to argue with other kung fu masters who were reluctant to teach the art to Americans/Europeans.
Thanks for uploading please keep on bringing such stories for us (I’d like to know more about hung gar style)

... I'd love to see a retelling of these stories before I die ... as close to Historical Accuracy as Possible
leung bik actor was Yip Man's son Ip Chun.
fei chang hao
I do Wing Chun Kung Fu, and I love Yip Man(aka Ip Man).
Accurate? How could these fun movies be accurate?😂😂😂😂😂
Please make a video on Li Shuwen
Bro had the correct IP address
so he left Foshan in 1937 to where? if he only arrived in HK in 1949
The Force is strong with this one
Yip Man is likely to be one of many unknown Kung Fu Wing Chun master, if not for Bruce Lee.
Bruce Lee was taught Ving Tsun by Wong Shun Leung, the ‘king of talking hands’, who was a student of Yip and a fighter. Bruce received little to no instruction directly from Yip.
And since lees mother was a top level opium dealer it all.makes more sence now .
Do a back ground on Di renji or justice Bao. What is the truth about their background.
2013 The Grandmaster
most people got his birth year mixed up bad if you dig into what year he attended St Stephen's.
there are no bd or date his final departure on his grave stone oh but there it shows his real name - Ip kai men ( Ye Ji Wen to be politically correct)
Also that Seventy year old man in that movie is Yipmans son
yip chun
is he still alive
WOW
Real wing chun look more like karate than cringe stance in movie, today everyone think wing chun is a like ip man movie. Wrong idea.

I thought he died in Ip Man 4 (sorry Spoiler). How is the plot of Ip Man 5 gonna be like?
