    Where are the castle, spectacle island and the sanctuary?
    The castle is awesome because it's a real life location that you can build on. It's a massive prebuild castle that you can expand or do what you want with. You can remove the mirelurker shit by doing the minutemen questline (or with console commands), but I prefere to keep it. It also has hidden tunnels and a radio beacon.
    Spectacle island has the biggest build site.
    The Sanctuary has one of the biggest build sites. It is also your characters old home which is good for roleplaying. It's a beautiful location. There are a lot of beautiful prebuilt houses and a giant tree to work with, while you have still a lot of free space to work with. The Sanctuary also starts with all crafting stations, which is great for low charisma no console commands runs. The Sanctuary also has it's own Vault which is FAR GREATER than anything Vault Tech has ever build!!! It's truly legendary!!! Sadly the Vault isn't part of the buildable space, but it's still cool for roleplaying and respawning rescources. I am not sure but I think, the Sanctuary is actually based on a real life location too.
    I now want to replay Fallout 4

    Sunshine Tidings would be up towards the top of the list for me. I also really like the the Boathouse as well (I use a mod to make it the Railroad's Safe House cuz it's in a nice strategic place on the river and near Bunker Hill). Hangman's Alley is a nice central location, but I rarely build it up very much. The Castle tends to end up being an absolute fortress, but I always end up siding with the Minutemen - what can I say, they appeal to the Commie in me (no matter how annoying Preston is).
    There's also County Crossing. I love the location and it's got a decent amount of space that's easy to build on. The robot Greenhouse place is another one that's a great location as well - plus you can build under and on the highway bridge as well. I usually treat Red Rocket as a personal residence as opposed to an actual settlement. There's also the fact that the game tends to chug pretty bad when you've got Abernathy, Sanctuary, and Red Rocket all built up. But my PC is kinda old and needing upgrading as well.
    But I also use a bunch of mods, including ones that increase what you can scrap. And Sim Settlements is basically mandatory for me at this point. I recently added a mod that lets me recruit Minutemen Squads to go take care of Preston's silly requests too, and it's working out pretty well overall. The General shouldn't have to do everything themselves, right?

    I always like to build a settlement on the water around the waterfront restaurant at Egret Tours. I love the build area. Lots of potential.
    I always build out Dalton Farm as well. I hate how frequently rad storms hit the area (and I REALLY hate how frequently they hit Echo Lake Lumber Mill), but I still like to build out the Far Harbor settlements anyway, especially Dalton Farm and Longfellow's Cabin.
    Abernathy Farm is great. I usually avoid building there until I have some established communities because settlements with already existing settlers become an easy target for raiders early on. Once I have a supply line and a lot of materials available, though, I love to wall out the settlement like you did in the video and then create the Abernathy Towers residential areas.
    One settlement that I would place in my top 5 that doesn't get mentioned here is the Finch Farm. I love building up on the bridge towering above the settlement (I like Graygarden for the same reason, and I usually also build on top of the movie theater building at Starlight...I just like high vantage points, I guess).
    I also really like The Slog. Building a whole structure around the swimming pool and then seeing the lighting effect when it becomes an "indoor" location is pretty spectacular.

  • @francis6888
    @francis6888 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    I probably would have suggested Longfellow's Cabin. While the terrain is a bit rougher than Dalton Farm, most of the settlement is dirt and foundations can easily be built to level everything else. The other advantage is that all attacks come from one direction, which makes defending the settlement extremely easy, if not the easiest of all settlements (I would say Dalton Farm is the second easiest with a few strategic structural placements).

  • @joshuagross3151
    @joshuagross3151 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    For me, it was always Croup Manor, the Marina and Starlight Drive-in.
    Croup gives a natural advantage on the cliff, meaning if you block off the front yard with 2-3 wall layers, you can bottleneck attackers, making for a rather straightforward defense. It also means you can put crops in a gated perimeter behind the house for added resource protection. It's most important feature, though, would be the house itself. Align extra panels with the openings on the mansion and you can add several extra floors and rooms for a plethora of space. With some _extra_ planning, you can even place a huge fusion generator in the center of the house and wire powered defenses across the entire settlement.
    Starlight is a massive farming and manufacturing opportunity, a better "Grey Garden" than _Grey Garden._ All the more so with the Automatron DLC. Assign a full team of cheaply made Handies to go gang busters on a full line of scavenger workstations; then use the materials to build cheap Protectrons for a full farming outfit. Make sure to buy concrete from Carla and use it to build a full wall perimeter (the flat paving makes it easy). At that point, you'll need more tech to build either a detachment of Assaultrons or a squad of Sentrybots; they'll be your primary defense force. Works wonders.
    Because of it's location and it's space, Egret Tours Marina makes for a fantastic "military" hub. Plenty of room for food, water, lodging and defenses, most importantly the mortars.
    It's also like Croup, in that the Marina's waterfront allows you to focus enemies through one or two entrances. Plus, due in no small part to the surrounding hills, scaffolding can by utilised alongside scrap setups to build walkways behind large bulwarks for added defense and ease for foot traffic. The Marina becomes a fortress, another Castle on the frontier.

    • @armyguy4124
      @armyguy4124 ปีที่แล้ว

      My recent play has the Marina serving as a massive merchant draw by having all the biggest merchandise counters staffed and well defended. I've also taking the Liberty of arming all my settlers to the teeth!! And sending them to other settlements to keep the roads clear.

    • @paulsmith5752
      @paulsmith5752 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep, Egret, Croup and Starlight always end up being big cities for me. I've recently thought I should develop Finch more, if Pa Finch, Ma Finch and Dan are OK with that. My only worry about Croup, now I've got a way of tackling the holes in the wall, is to make sure I concrete over that door to the basement.
      I also develop the Slog quite a lot, as somewhere to send ghoul settlers and also because I really like Wiseman - who always gets a promotion to Captain in the Minutemen when he comes on board.
      And of course every big settlement has at least 2 BFGs (Big Freakin' Guns) in it so I can howitzer-barrage anything dangerous into the Stone Age before going in. Always SO satisfying doing that in Dunwich Borers and watching those quite tough raiders turn into doggy chow thanks to Minuteman 88mm shells.
      Finally, it's always so rewarding to see the protective fencing and turrets facing the road from Starlight take care of passing deathclaws before the settlers get involved.

I also like that the cook station is in a nearby church, outside of, but connected to, the settlement. Just figuring that out was kind of cool. In one of my playthroughs, it literallly had the single highest water output of any settlement other than the castle and spectacle island. And keep in mind, those places are literally surrounded by water.
    (and one thing you forgot to mention in the video: Starlight has a random encounter spot within walking distance, thereby making it an excellent random enounter farm. I always place turrets right at the settlement entrance, which usually start eviscerating the enemies found in the spot once i fire even so much as one shot with a crappy pistol. Otherwise, fantastic video! )

    I used concrete building foundations as border walls & set them just in the ground to give maximum height & then lined the outer perimeter of the high walls with every type of defense weapon available & used wooden platforms as elevated weapon platforms & guard towers which can be linked together to make an entire perimeter that you can walk around on & see in all directions for miles.

    First thing I do on any new character is establish the Red Rocket outside Concord as my personal safehouse. It's easy to wall off, the roofs are great spots for turrets, the interior is easy to fit with all manner of storage and display racks, and there's still plenty of room to place housing for companions. Plus it acts as a really good outpost to deter attackers from Sanctuary, which is harder to fortify.

    Awww, The Castle didn't make this list? I freaking love building at The Castle. I always line the corridors with fusion reactors to power everything, I rebuild the outer walls with concrete, and then put wood/concrete foundations down to then build additional corridors on each of the walls that serves as the power armor bays for the lower half and crops on the roofs. Then at each of the five points, I build up towers about three levels tall where I put the bunks at for all of the Minutemen and Settlers with the roofs of each one being dedicated to artillery pieces. Then, if I get REALLY bored, I'll make a ammo manufacturing plant on the south side of the complex over the little lake there complete with a control room at the top. There's just sooooo much you can do with that location!

    I have built a settlement a couple times at RR but was never really happy with it for the reasons stated. Using mods I built a really nice player home there. When playing vanilla I built a massive settlement and player home at Starlight, using the back office and side room as my player home. Spectacle Island is my favorite vanilla settlement location though. Massive build area, a relatively flat area between the workshop shack hill and broken house, down by the water. It makes for a great place to get creative. I've built so many different settlements and homes there.

Best of all no settlers to fend for and fitted with an absurd amount of rocket turrets to deter anything that mucks about

    Warwick Homestead is the most overlooked settlement IMO. Surrounded by water on almost all sides and enemies only attacking from one direction, the settlement is very defensible. The building ground is completely flat, with lots of farmland, water, and prebuilt structures. The downside of this settlement is that it is on the Southeastern edge of the map, very far away from your starting point. I didn't even know the place exist on my first 2 playthrough.

    The slope is not a problem, I did a vault build with bases to get an ample build base, and still have space for a vault generator and an artillery cannon operated by McCready.
    My only problem is the small object count of the area, forcing me to do the drop and store glitch for a long while to build just a little more, and that's why I only did 3 vault floors instead of the 5 or 6 I wanted.

      Reading all your favorites settlements and builds reminds me of my favorite build. Abernathy Farm. I was testing the highest build limit just behind the existing house by the melon field. I began by building with stairs that have the ladder in the middle that are stackable. I built for an exit at the top of the Abernathy existing structure. As I neared the limit of the farm build height limit, I was at the very top of the electrical Tower. So I built right into the very top and build a floor 12 by 12 floor squares. With railings all round. No walls no roof. Then I but around oil lamps and soft lighting. And came back at night

    Abernathy Farm was a favorite of mine too, at first. After a few playthroughs (and a bit of researched to confirm this wasn't just my game), I found it's maybe the most bugged settlement in Fallout 4. When it gets attacked and crops get destroyed, there's a bug that prevent you from both repairing or scraping them to replace them. Another annoying bug is that, the food production can get limited to 15, even though you already have more than enough crops to produce more when you first arrive there. And, even at more that 70 defense, Abernathy is usually my settlement that gets attacked the most.

    I can highly recommend Taffington boathouse for a small, more personal outpost, for maybe 2-3 people. It doesn't need very much for a super cozy, lore-friendly safe house, you basically just barricade the outer border, make a small garden, hook up basic necessities, and have several pre-built rooms for interior decoration. I've always had much more fun here than building everything from scratch on an open field, and ending up with ridiculous looking trash cubes. Starlight is good for a big settlement, but Taffington is much better for a personal safespot to relax in after a long day.

    My favorites are sanctuary because:
    being the first one you unlock makes it super easy to get access to.
    it is large allowing you to build something more like the old pre-war suburbs or just spacing out different parts of the settlement for both visual and practical reasons.
    its placement at the early part of the game makes enemy levels lower as in a normal playthrough that is where the player goes shortly after leaving the vault and would only have a basic melee weapon and a 10mm pistol at that point.
    The river makes defending the front of town super easy as you have a chokepoint to work with.
    The river makes it easy to string up some water purifiers
    Comes with a prebuilt stand to store and modify your power armor.
    The castle because:
    Big walls with easily patchable holes to make a solid defense
    Besides allowing for a chokepoint the walls also let turrets and defending settlers to attack from the walls while being out of reach of any melee attackers
    Nice courtyard for agriculture and shops
    Space in the walls to act as housing for the people
    A good size patch of water for fitting a large number of water purifiers, allowing you to make stupid amounts of water for supporting a massive stock of people across the commonwealth., used for healing as they are a clean healing option or sold to vendors for easy money.

    Egret Tours Marina: Super mutants spawn right across the road at the coast guard area (which is a funny place to even have such a building, but let's ignore that for now). This is a huge problem to start with. Ragstags also spawn right outside the buildable area as well in multiple spots which adds another danger, even if it's far less then the super mutants. Mirelurk nests nearby could be a huge problem as well. It does have a lot of build area and with several buildings being usable to build in, not counting in the non-scrappable objects that block you from doing much inside. The biggest issue here might be the build limits in the sense of "we of Bethesda limit your objects because we are sure your PC is a potato and we can not use a engine that isn't as buggy".
    This location could have been golden if it were not for the build limits and unscrappable objects mostly.
    Dalton Farm: It gets attacked a lot and this by the worst parties usually (super mutants in larger groups). You can't really build against this threat and with Bethesda forcing you to return to defend it or your settlement is lost... No this isn't a great location in that sense at all for that reason alone. You simply can't really do much in building either unless you use mods and console commands.
    Abernathy Farm: Great location, but it gets attacked a lot. A lot of spawn points around this location and all seem to be drawn to the settlement. There are even spawn points inside the buildable area adding to the problem. You can't really defend against that without keeping the place small. The tower is another problem as it's 1 object, you can't snap anything to it's sides to expand it or build even higher using the tower. The huge plot of farm land is however a bonus that forces you to make this into a farming community which makes it a dilemma.
    Red Rocket: A location that has a ferral problem on a regular basis. Also there are parts of the area that can't be scrapped which makes it inconvenient to really build something nice. The building itself has 3 doors to get inside, which would be nice but can also cause problems. If you could have more build space here it would be awesome, specially because one side has some minor cliff edge to it which can be used as a defensive feature. Problem is that only bugs spawn on that side and nothing really more then that. Spawn points for ferrals are right on the edge of the build area and one even inside. This doesn't make it a ideal location.
    Red Rocket (DLC): This location is indeed far better with build area, however actually building here is adding challenges on it's own. There are no natural defenses anywhere in sight for starters. Added to that, whether you keep the raiders in power or not doesn't matter, this will still keep trouble around. If not the raiders all kinds of other critters roam the area.
    Starlight Drive-in: Loads of space to build in, but with many objects not being scrappable and the screen itself not being able to be used as guard location makes it rather a troublesome place. It is however a huge advantage to turn this into a major hub between your settlements as it poses a excellent cross roads between them. The crater gives you a water opertunity but its tricky to get the barrels away from there without needing radaway. There is little to no farm land which makes it one of those 'meh' locations.

    the roof on top of the red rocket by concord is buildable, and makes a great place to store and work on power armor!

    Starlight is great. I have a massive city built there on one of my builds.
    Used mods to built around it too, it is bigger than DC now.

    Slight correction on the Nuka-World Red Rocket. There is a water source that a medium water purifier will fit into and it will generate bottles of filtered water. It looks like a puddle in a ditch by the road.

    I prefer "verisimilitude" and building a huge concrete prefabricated blocks feels completely unrealistic. That's why in my 2nd playthrough, the two fav locations for me are:
    - County Crossing, which I turned into a heavily fortified lived-in post-apocalyptic farming community with barn houses (from Far Harbor DLC) that has a nice mood to it. The terrain allowed building a set of structures that resemble a tiny town (I adapted the completely ruined house into a base plate for two wind turbines and an elevated workshop area, while the original unscrappable shack became a lived-in infirmary). It even has a nicely organized and protected spot for roaming traders. The CC's location is optimal, as it's literally on a huge junction of trade routes, and (aside from a ruined nuclear facility just a stone's throw to the south), it is optimally located from a role playing standpoint.
    - Nordhagen Beach, which I turned into a refurbished ruins of a seaside resort with beach piers, lodging and so on, also heavily fortified). I like the placement of it, despite being remote. It has this cool feeling,
    Note: I play on mods, but the only mod that affects the settlement building I installed is the one with snappable junk fences. It makes life SO MUCH EASIER, especially if you're into, you know, walling the whole areas around the post-apocalyptic settlements.

    @3:54 you mention the Nuka-World Red Rocket has "no standing water sources," but that's not true. There's a large puddle in the northwest corner of the build area in which you can fit a few industrial water filters.

    I'm partial to commonwealth Redrock. It's a perfect place for a safe spot to dump loot and repair or modify armor and weapons. The castle is Also amazing the challenge of turning it from crumbling ruins to a fortress for the minutemen is a nice challenge
