How Valheim Taught Me to Have Fun Again

  • Video Contains spoilers for most of Valheim's content, so if you're looking to play the game without knowledge of its biomes, turn away until you've beaten it!
Viking/tree-falling simulator Valheim came out of nowhere and had all the makings of a game I normally wouldn't have glanced twice at.
But I did. And it captured my heart with absurd ease, quickly becoming one of my favorite games ever-- Even reminding me why I picked up a controller in the first place.
Big shout-out to my buddy Torb for agreeing to retrace our steps through our initial playthrough so I could capture footage for this project. We could all use a friend like Torb.

You're creating some genuinely masterful pieces of art, the writing on every video has been overwhelmingly well paced, structured, and delivered, the editing is solid, and I appreciate and respect all of it. I haven't played the games you've covered, very few creators have genuinely made me interested in actually experiencing them myself, to me, that's incredibly commendable and respectable.
Thank you for your work, I look forward to watching you grow as a creator.

Well now you've got me blushing--Thank you so much for your kind words! I'm glad you're able to appreciate content for games you haven't played, and if I'm able to make even one person interested in giving anything I cover a go, then it's all worth it!
Thank you again--hope you keep watching!

Oh man I REALLY feel you on the stress of keeping up with games these days. This year especially I feel like I kept getting caught in an eternal loop of trying to finish what ever just came out before the next release date. I had to pull myself away when I realised I was treating it as an obligation rather than a fun hobby, and I ended up playing some smaller indie games instead. It’s been such a relief just meandering through a game with no time limit, just because I want to, instead of because I have to.

So you were like a builder and housekeeper in one package.
Feels like a necessity to have that type of a gamer along with u in any sandbox like this.

love your video, it does a great job explaining what's so exhilarating about Valheim and reminded me why i played so much when i played it a year ago.
The video was also very well edited, it never felt dull watching. Thanks Torb
i'm excited to watch more of your videos, i really like your style and am impressed how distinct your videos feel even with how few you made so far.

While I don't share your habit of rushing to complete games before spoilers, I've had a few delightful experiences recently with single player games that remind me how much I enjoy just diving into a world on my own. I sometimes get caught up in trying to schedule playing games around people's availability and interest. I know that's sort of antithetical to what your video was about on a surface level, but I relate to falling back in love with a part of gaming that you'd lost touch with.

Excellent video! I had the same experience with three of my friends right after Valheim came out. My only regret is I haven't been able to convince them to revisit our world after we defeated Yagluth! It was a wonderful time though, the sense of true adventure was refreshing.

Honestly, me and my friend got so into building roads and infrastructure for our other friends to get around our little island and it's the most fun I've ever had in a multiplayer survival game.

Just stumbled with your channel. Binged all three videos. I like the way you structure and pace your videos. Great Stuff!
I'll be honest, I don't know what to suggest you to cover, but I feel like whatever you do it's going to be really interesting.
Now, I do feel the same about too many games coming out, and me already owning way more games than I will probably play in the reminder of my life, it's actually kind of stressing, so just enjoying the games that I decide to play, instead of trying to rush them to not get spoiled or metting a certain type of self-imposed deadline, feels like the right approach with this hobby of ours (gaming), even if it sounds obvious.

Great new video! I just started Elden Ring, and it was difficult for a while there to be avoiding all the Reddit posts and let’s plays. But I feel like the hype has died down at this point and I can enjoy it at my own pace without threat of spoilers. It’s a nice feeling

Love this game. It's satisfying to tread to further lands and build forward bases, ports, and such. The necessity of new bases really helps the building not get dull. Getting to try new designs for outposts like a rustic long house village compared to the mega castle of the main base.

I don't know how old you are and thus don't know the games you played as a kid, but there might be video potential in a game you hated as a kid and appreciate now upon revisiting it. Or vise-versa, a childhood favorite that you now see ruinous flaws in.

That's a pretty rad idea, I'll definitely be giving that some thought! I'm in my early 30s and my earliest days of gaming were with the NES/Genesis, so there's a fairly large selection of games throughout the years that might be worth re-examining!

If you really like the building I would suggest trying dragon quest builders 2, you don’t have to have played any other DQ games to get into it, and the building is a lot better than the first builders game. Also it can be compared to Minecraft but in my opinion they aren’t the same thing, they both have their own unique vibes to them.

Great story! Among all the toxicity and miserable haters criticizing every aspect of games they themselves play and have hundreds of hours in just to try to fill the holes in their egos, it's nice to see someone actually finding fun. Weird times!
I don't have the too-many-games problem though. The Quake series satisfies all my PvP, action, and social/teamwork needs, as well as grinding in the form of aim and movement training. That eliminates the vast majority of games for me. Other than that I just go through one RPG/adventure game about every 2 months; split 60-40 between my old 90s favorites and new games. I'll use cheats or speedrun strats to minimize the leveling up and just enjoy the story and exploration.

How would the combat feel for someone coming from a fromsoft game?

    • @jerrrdan
      @jerrrdan  ปีที่แล้ว

I feel that the combat feels pretty similar to the Souls series combat without being as demanding. It lacks things like magic and lock-on (the former of which there's mods for), but it comes with the familiar stamina management system built around dodge-rolling and parrying.
