I was an early adopter of the SSL UF8+UC1 and I'm so happy to see how far it's been coming and that SSL has been listening to customers. Many people on forums would cite how such and such was not possible due to the mackie protocol, that's just the way it is, but I knew the tech is there and that SSL built something that could grow into something beyond that protocol and into the future. The link is just awesome, and the fact they are bringing color coding to match track colors for me personally is huge. The CC control is a fantastic added benefit too, as is the fact I heard they recently opened up a way to map knobs to third-party plugins now. It's getting closer and closer - one of the few outstanding things I wish for them to update, since those LCD screens are more than capable, would be a better readout of complete track names. For those of us with large sessions, truncated abbreviated names are still hard to understand when looking down. 360 Link fits more letters than Mackie HUI but even still - the screen is sharp enough to do more than that. And maybe even track icons could be pulled from Cubase or any DAW to even more quickly ID track type!
Hey Dom, FWIW, I've had really good luck going in and programming keystrokes on the UF8 to control the automation buttons, as well as setting up easy mixer configurations, etc. Takes a little time to create the keystrokes that don't double others in Cubase, but once that's accomplished, it sure makes the UF8 a wonderful piece!

Definitely with you on the still much needed improvements on the UF8 - I also had set it up to be a CC controller for my instruments only to realise my automations were not being recorded...

I needed the Midi clarification, thank you and we still can use the faders to record the data just via automation lane; instead of, CC lane if I understood correctly. I still want them to make copying and pasting available for the pages within 360 app to make it easier to update presets; otherwise, I really don't know what else they can add to it that would help me significantly. Also, Track types filtering works stock for Cubase UF8 if choose "Fine" and the "Send/Plugin" number buttons which will choose a different track type like audio, groups, effects etc.

SSL has to produce some serious DAW controller in order for us to be able to handle big projects with so many channels. Controllers with extensions in order to have a big desk with many channels to control without hands on mouse and keyboard.
iCon tried to produce some controllers but I have read the worst reviews on all of their products. So I decided to go for the Mackie Universal Pro with the 2 extensions for a 24 channel mixing desk.
I don't need to add more complexity to my music production. I will keep using my computer mouse it never fails.
hahaha- yes it's a workflow thing. For me, imagine if I had to mix the project I show on this video (over 200 channels!). It would be utterly not enjoyable and slow to do it with the mouse. Just my workflow though...
You can use SSL in live situations, like when mixing just the singer without the band, and the instruments come from the PC. Just mix an 8-channel track and quickly fix room and speaker issues. Another tricky part is correcting if the crowd is present. Using a mouse is pretty slow in this case.

Why an earth don't they just integrate via the new MIDI Remote API? There would be no character restrictions, or other MCU antiquated limitations to contend with, and it would allow users to add full page mappings if they wanted it (i.e. faders and rotaries to control a VST Synth for example).
Users are doing it in their spare time for hardware with faders and screen feedback, so SSL should have no problem in doing it.
Secondly, I hate having to add additional plugins or wrappers into my projects just for the sake of a controller. Had it with Novation Automap, had it with Komplete Kontrol, and all have caused me problems, So would be a no go for me.
I really hope that the Nektar CS12 comes through with a native Cubase mapping as it could be a killer controller for Cubase.
That's what I say... Not only for SSL but pretty much every developer that claims to support Cubase. Cubase has one of the most advanced Midi Remote protocols now. No excuses. And if a plain user can create a great Midi Remote Script then so should companies that create controllers.
That being said, I do acknowledge it's always a matter of resources. Someone *has* to work on this and believe it or not, even big companies don't have enough resources to dedicate.

My avid artist mix was $300 on eBay and does all of this completely natively. You’d like it a lot.
By the time I lift up my arm from my arm rest, turn to the side, and push faders on this , I could I have clicked a few times in Cubase lol. I guess I’m not a hardware kind of guy. Mad respect for SSL though, I love 360! This would look cool in my studio I have to admit.

So a Cubase user Bijouc has been building a Mackie Control compatible midi remote that fixes the track follow issues, allows for track colors, and other nifty features.
The ONLYS thing it’s missing is fader groups, which I personally need, but is currently not suppprted by the midi remote API.
So for now we have to choose - follow selected track with no fader groups, or fader groups but you need to bank around like a maniac.
Hello, I suggest looking into Channel Visibility Configurations Menu and Channel Visibility Agents. Also, Track types filtering works stock for Cubase UF8 if choose "Fine" and the "Send/Plugin" number buttons which will choose a different track type like audio, groups, effects etc.
@@thaexception3406 that’s what I meant -visibility configurations are not respected by controllers running on Cubase’s MIDI Remote.

@DomSigalas Great video! I see that sometimes the UF8 or the Console-1 are not on your desk. Do you simply plug them when needed? Also, in that case, how do you deal with the usb cables and power supply? I am still trying to find a way for me to be able to "switch on demand" without the cable mess... what a headache!
A uf8 cost $1200 .. I was gonna get 2 so that was gonna be over $2500 including tax ... I decided to get an excellent condition Nucleus for $1000 .. Ssl doesn't support it anymore because they wanna push people to buy their newer products but you can find the software on the internet... the interface portion of Nucleus isn't compatible with newer macs but as a daw controller it still functions perfectly. .. I'm glad I decided to go in that direction and saved $1500 !!!

I wanted to buy the UF8, but I heard it has problems with bank changes, so I purchased 3 XTouches, and I am very Happy very underrated. They are not UF8s.
Great video man. I have the uf8 and my situation is the same. I am a game and movie composer and was excited with this update but I lost it when I realize I couldn’t record my automations. I’ve reached to ssl which I had one reply, and that was it. Never replied back. Awful support which is quite sad because the hardware is solid but software sucks. And support, the same…

I'm so stupid and thought that the Color feature is only possible working in 360... and since my work is 95% Midi I haven't tried it... but now after your video - my template is colorfull as well 😍🥰 - the only thing that I am still MISSING is the feature that the Numbers 1-8 actually can open and close a Plugin and not just show the parameters on the screen... I wanna see what I am doing on some plugs... and it CAN be done as a few people who are trained in codes have shown... but SSL haven't brought that up yet 🙄 Dom, please add this wish to your Feedback List for SSL

i had a ssl nucleus for years and it would update the selected track you selected in the DAW no problem !!! how can this be an update with UF8 ?? it must have existed ??
Honestly, if a controller has buttons with no use - it's a knockout criteria. Still hoping fo a CC121 MK2 or a Nektar Panorama suited for Cubase.

I've been diving deeper into the Mackie ever since you did the first review on this. As a software engineer, I'm flabbergasted at the limitations for midi/mackie, even midi 2.0. There comes a time when you need to correct the course. Perhaps Yamaha/Steinberg could do a tech refresh and get us into the next century. We need a really solid realtime low latency general human machine interface for everything. Even the keyboard and mouse are locked into arcane protocols. Maybe something layered on DANTE audio. That has bit perfect IO, 512 channels at 24bits/96k. I've heard it. No glitches. Hours and hours of flawless uncompressed audio over IP networks. You could easily steal a channel or two for control surfaces. Help your friends at Yamaha/Steinberg consider this. ASIO and VST are the living proof that these are the right guys to do something like this without giving away the family jewels. Maybe Audinate (makers of DANTE) would help.

I can't find the tutorial to set 360 link working in protools as you show in Cubase. I would really appreciate if you send me a link of how to properly set it at. It's a super handy feature and I'm not getting it to work. thank You!!!!!!

Does this plugin work on both audio and midi channels? I have been using a Qcon Pro X for 6 years, I love it but hate the Mackie protocol because of the lack of track follow so won't be upgrading to the new gen Qcons as this is still the same issue. My steinberg CC121 is still a vital part of my desk as it actually does follow the tracks properly.
I´ll keep my cc121. 1 fader is ok for me.
I have both the SSL 360 ecosystem and the Softube C1 ecosystem (to combine best of both world). But placing two inserts on the same channel (both 360 link and C1) crashes Nuendo. So both systems can't be used at the same time. And according to the crash report it is always 360 link causing the crash. I'm in contact with SSL, but no solution over there. That's a pity.
Dom, how are the drivers for this? I saw this for the first time last year at NAMM. I've been hesitant to buy it because I bought one of SSL's interfaces, the SSL 2+. While I can get it to work in Cubase, I use my interface as a general sound card as well but that interface is useless for that. TH-cam and Netflix videos don't work with it. This past January at NAMM I spoke to one of their representatives about this issue and he wasn't all that helpful. So, if the drivers are good for this controller I might take the chance on it but I'd be interested in your feedback.

I’ve got this controller. It is in a right direction, but still unacceptable. Pan resolution is so bad that it is useless. Imagine a mixer with no usable pan? Any “menu diving” multiple button pushing (which this requires) is too confusing and makes those functions unusable. I have lots of gear and no time to remember all their silly menus. Should not have to hold down the “channel” knob while pushing “nav” in order to make the lower right a transport control. Cmon! Stop making things difficult and just make it work.

In my opinion, there is no perfect controller for Cubase at the moment. When a company implements seamless integration with no need to add plugins, they will get my vote and love ❤️

Is that CC# relay problem also on Logic n StudioOne? Was really looking to have this on my desk for film composing.
I tried it in Logic and it works. Not sure about StudioOne though- but StudioOne is extremely similar to Cubase so I would test it first.

I have a Presonus FP8 and I would love it if the tracks on the controller and the tracks on Cubase would follow each other. Any chance you could approach them about it?
I think for now, I'm sticking to my Presonus Faderport v2 until SSL fully works in Cubase.
The automation buttons work in Logic - seems it's a Cubase support thing.
All the buttons are assigned by SSL's script. Not something that can be fixed in Cubase or by Steinberg. When you buy a controller (by any company), if your DAW is supported you expect the best integration possible. A controller is only good as its support for any DAW. Good to know Logic is supported better though ❤️
@@DomSigalas I was suggesting SSL's support for Cubase, not the other way round. The UF8 is a very problematic device & I've been super unimpressed with it & them.
@@audiosnobs ooooh sorry I thought you meant it's an issue for "Steinberg Support" :) It seems SSL are constantly improving things- for me the CC messages not being recorded were a slap in the face as a Cubase user (and the article on their website doesn't suggest they will do anything about this)- but it seems they're working on it. I'm a UF8 + Console 1 user that just switched to Cubase (in the middle of some very urgent projects...thrilling) - your content and channel is a life saver~ I'm wondering if there's any way to always have SSL 360 link & Console 1 plugins always loaded when a) I add a new audio or midi track and b) when I drag an audio file into the project (which creates a track with that audio file)?
I am already using track presets but this still requires me to drag the track preset into the target audio/midi track - I want the above mentioned 2 plugins to always be loaded in automatically...
I have both system too, but adding both 360 link and C1 on each channel crashes Nuendo. And according to the crash report it's 360 causing the crash. Don't you have that problem?
@@gertkeunen2720 hmm no crashes on my end... I'm on the latest version of Cubase 13 pro. About 3 weeks+ ago I remember SSL had an update of the 360 link plugin from the SSL download manager... not sure if updating might help?

just checked: there no new update op 360 link in the last couple of weeks. So I work on the most recent version.

If you were interested in the SSL UF8, UF1, or UC1... I have some bad news for you.... It still crashes Cubase after about 20 plugin instances.

Having to insert a plug-in in every channel is not an acceptable solution. It is about time for a new protocol, and I don‘t really understand why companies like Steinberg cannot agree upon a new standard. I mean, Steinberg does not even sell controller hardware anymore in the amateur and semi-pro price range, so what’s the problem?

Yes I do, it’s in my other room but if you notice, I bring it back every other week or so :)

2024 and still controllers try to communicate via mackie control,and still is totally useless at real world....i dont buy any controller until they invent a better and more flexible and easy way to communicate with daw s with real usability
Who the heck needs 230 tracks?? Most of the things you complain about not working, work just fine in Logic Pro. So maybe it's a Cubase problem?
