    So first let’s define a portrait business. A portrait business is you creating art that's a portrait of someone else. The portraits can come in lots of different varieties. Great Video. (if you wonder why u should read what I say, a little info at end) Just a few random thoughts (they are my personal ones so u may tweak or disagree with some as circumstances are different):
    1.Definitely don't compete on time and price (also generally if you spend more than 20 hours on a piece, something is either wrong or u should get paid 5 figures)
    2. Don't be afraid of individual customers, talk to them as equal, they seen your work, they looking and want your stuff. And in my experience 99.9% of people are really nice.
    3. I keep telling people create art in a different style is extremely important these days. eg. You don't want to specialize in a typical one that just a carbon copy of a reference.
    4. A bit more regarding marketing. Have account on ALL major social media and have your stuff on there. why not? free marketing and engagement. (plan your time accordingly, don't burn out)
    5. Ads are extremely tricky. Unless you know what you are doing, is a super expert at it. Get help or something cuz it's gonna drain your money so fast it'll make your head spin. Social media and word of mouth is what you want.
    6. Treat your art (at least in your own head) as veblen goods. (price goes higher, demand doesn't change or sometimes goes higher too) Think luxury item. You are the ONLY person in the world that can create that piece of art.
    I been doing this for over 10 year. I have done theater released stuff. High 3digit or 4digit is usually the lowest I go (for charcoal pencil). I never paid for any advertising.

Do you work on multiple orders at once or one at a time? Any tips, links, or otherwise would be greatly appreciated! Thanks again for what you do!

    • @CreativeHiveCo
      @CreativeHiveCo  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is all going to depend on your process and the amount of time you have to devote to orders. If you can work on multiple items at once then you can certainly do that, but if that's a struggle you can tell someone you are in the middle of a comission and can start theirs in 1/2/3 weeks, etc.

    Very helpful video. But,
    I have some questions tho.
    1. Can we sell the scanned image of a custom portrait on online? Or we can only can sell the the artself by shipping it in their hands?
    2. Can we transfer money anywhere and safely?
    3. Which app is suitable for selling custom portraits?

    • @CreativeHiveCo
      @CreativeHiveCo  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you are doing a custom portrait of someone, I would ask for permission from them to sell their image before selling prints of something they commissioned. You can sell prints of your own work as much as you want, though. If you want to sell your own work, I would suggest your own website, which I would recommend you build using Shopify. For printables, many people like RedBubble and Printful.

      On redbubble or printful, Can we chat to the customer about the price, quality, sample piece. And the customer send their pic and I'll draw it and send the scanned image of it and then they can print it?
      If not, which app is suitable for it?

    Hey there, I’ve been trying to figure out if you can sell celebrity portraiture online, as I love to draw movie characters and celebrities but I, not sure if there are copyright laws against it. I have researched but I’m still not confident about it. Do you know if I can do this or what steps I need to take to be able to do this? Thanks

    • @CreativeHiveCo
      @CreativeHiveCo  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Movie characters are definitely licensed/trademarked entities that you need permission to use. As far as celebrities go, I'm not sure if they can put a license on themselves, but I would think that it would generally be frowned upon to use their likeness for profit. I suppose you could contact their management to see if they have an issue with it, but as a small business owner I would personally shy away from doing this and would rather use my own art.

    • @Keezy48
      @Keezy48 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Creative Hive thanks for your response, people have told me to contact the celebrity but their management I never thought about, thinking if it they will know the legal issues surrounding these things.

    • @D2Kprime
      @D2Kprime 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends on how and where you plan to sell them. I exhibit at comic-book and anime conventions and I see a lot of artists selling nothing but artwork of famous-people and trademarked-characters.
      Even celebrities that might actually _be_ at these events are fine with it as some people buy the artwork from one of the artists at the show, then the take it to the celebrity to have them sign that as well as take a picture with them.
      Most people and companies have better things to do than to chase down every random-artist in the world selling pictures here and there of their IPs. The process of doing so would cost them far more than they could ever argue in the court of law that your work "cost" them in revenue.
      *HOWEVER,*
      You CAN be hit with a "cease and desist" letter and once that happens you _have_ to stop. Nowadays major companies are hiring 3rd-party companies overseas to do their copyright-claims for them, as well as using BOTs and algorithms. You can get hit with a Copyright-claim or strike and never be able to talk to a person to rectify the situation.
      Online is where it gets tricky. It really all depends on the actual company or person, and how much revenue you are making. If you are just making a couple of bucks here and there, they aren't going to mess with you, but if you are making thousands of dollars and are well-known for selling their trademarked IPs, they WILL come after you. Some companies will come after you if you even THINK of selling artwork of their trademark IPs or post anything of theirs on TH-cam. ESPECIALLY TH-cam.
      It's really like navigating and old minefield. You just have to be careful.

      I don't believe I said that digital art is a filter scam. I said that there are people who will filter photos and say they are handmade portraits, which is not the same as a portrait artist who is creating an original drawing by hand. I said that digital artists who are doing this are competition for the original artists and can affect pricing.

    • @johnny_belmont
      @johnny_belmont 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      You may have misunderstood it, as she totally didn´t say that. I´ve been painting portraits both traditionally and digitally for over 2 decades, and I love both. That being said, there ARE people just using photoshop actions / plugins / apps that turn photos into "watercolor style portraits" in a matter of seconds. THAT is how they´re able to put out 20 portraits a day, and undercharge every one who is actually painting it (digitally or not). Hope that helps.

    • @D2Kprime
      @D2Kprime 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@johnny_belmont The problem is by just saying "digital art" as a blanket-statement it does not differentiate people do what you are saying from people like myself who do everything from scratch i.e. pencil sketch or digital sketch, line-art, and color rendering.
      Photo-manipulation is the correct-term for people who take photos and use graphics software like Adobe Photoshop to alter them. That's literally what Photoshop was originally designed to do. So it's not a new thing.
