    I love how most of the comments are hating on "free spirited women" rather than the trope. The manic pixie dream girl is a romantic plot device used in narratives in order to make the mopey male protagonist feel better about himself.
    There is nothing wrong with a woman who is quirky and fun. Some people are just like that.
    Are we going to complain about cold and distance women next?

    • @patbau96
      @patbau96 8 ปีที่แล้ว +69

      +Miss Mutton And it can even be used in reverse. For example, Jack from Titanic is a manic pixie dream boy. So it really has nothing to do with women specifically, I guess it just happens that it usually is associated with women because most writers are male, and this leads to a lot of them just writing about their fantasy girls interacting with their male author avatars.

      I agree that anyone of any gender can be this trope, but I'm more pissed that its associated with "quirky" women in a negative way.
      Interesting enough I see this trope ALOT in Japanese anime. :)

      I mean that's why the whole 'manic pixie dream girl' label exists. To bring female love interests back to where they were in the '80s. Can't have two stereotypes, that's too much like acknowledging people are different.

    I once dated a guy that was using me as his manic pixie dream girl. He was in a depressed slump when we met and he was tied down with work and a repetitive lifestyle. At the time I was hitchhiking around the world, and we met when he picked me up. It was fun at first because he was so supportive of all the fun and impulsive ideas I had, but when things quietened down and I wanted to start doing normal things like going clothes shopping or getting fast food, suddenly I was unappealing to him. He made me feel guilty for wanting to do 'normal' things, despite being the most normie guy there was. I was basically his tool for fun and adventure because he lacked the independence and confidence to do that shit himself and he wanted me no other way, to put it really bluntly.
    Basically, I can see exactly why this trope is so popular with meek and 'soft' men.

    • @MastaSmack

    What's sad is that sometimes if a woman is a little bit silly or joyful or hyper at times, have a few aspects of this in their personalities, they're sometimes expected to always act like that. Some men actually want to date someone like that, and expect it all the time. I like to be silly and like people a lot, but am not always that way. A few people have been confused and even angry that I wasn't still being that light entertaining happy hyper person, even if I was just more mellow or more serious that day. It's like they've forgotten I'm a real person too, and I don't just exist to be sparkly and entertaining. That being said, this video is very funny and well done.

    • @professoranethesia
      @professoranethesia 10 ปีที่แล้ว +70

      And that, in the end, is the essence of the pixie dream girl. She's just a fantasy that guys (and girls) make up in their heads of what the perfect girlfriend would be like. She would always be free-spirited and fun, never nagging or grumpy. She would always be that unending light of positivity and happiness, never having any real preoccupations of her own. Her entire life would revolve around your happiness.
      It's a very shallow and immature expectation, but one that apparently resonates with a lot of men.

    • @somniare_8518
      @somniare_8518 8 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      YES! I've had a few people interested in me that expected that. It's rather disturbing, really. I'm sorry you've had to go through that. If you've actually dated a person that expects that, it can do a number on your self-image. Like you're a disappointment as a human being for not being all sweetness and light.

    People don’t even get this trope, it’s about the fetishization of quirkiness, not the quirkiness itself. Women on their own can be weird and fine but the trope is that weirdest being used for the fulfillment of a man instead of self fulfillment. That’s what makes the trope bad. Artsy and quirky girls aren’t manic pixie dream girls. They aren’t until a man begins to worship her and idolize her. 500 days of summer actually has a great commentary on this trope, bc in reality, summer isn’t a manic pixie dream girl bc she can’t fulfill everything that the guy needs, but the guy keeps projecting all his own shit onto her and views her in an unrealistic way.

    I had a guy compare me to the chick from 500 days of summer, and say this is why he hated me.
    We had watched the film together 3 months or so before he stated that, but I always wonder ...
    Did he realise the point of the film was, the so called 'protagonist' obsessed over a girl and was not satisfied that she couldn't reciprocate the distorted 'love' he forced on her.
    ... Always felt the pixie is a trope to justify indifference after rejection or unfulfilled desire/narcissistic.

    • @littlerelief5029
      @littlerelief5029 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @decembrist So it's all about framing (In 500 days of summer). The guy doesn't make any progress in the plot development outside of the female's story trajectory. At the end he is 'just happy', she's married and pregnant and has done all these things with her life. If you fall into the blackhole of film analysis (don't touch the feminist critics XP), it's a commonly agreed argument .. also that the guy is a narcissist (but I don't 100% agree with that). What are your thoughts?

    • @BartimaeusTrilogyFan
      @BartimaeusTrilogyFan 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@littlerelief5029 At the end, he is moving forward with his life, actually, by taking some of Summer's advice, given he finally seems to be learning from their experience. It's just that the film ends at the beginning of his rebuilding of self, even though Summer had already gone through hers. He left the career he had been settling for, became more artistic again, and started pursuing the dreams he had abandoned. He also seemed to realize his own romanticism of their relationship, his sister's talks helped with that, and his final conversation with Summer cemented that by giving him closure and perspective on her feelings and point of view.

    Some of the darker, more nuanced MPDG flicks like Eternal Sunshine get into this, but MPDGs are really just a certain aesthetic of women with bipolar disorder or borderline personality. A lot of the movies just show the manic side and don’t show when they crash into a depressive episode
    In real life Sam from Garden State and Girl Interrupted would just be two sides of the same person. Most creative, unconventional people in general have mental illness of some kind. So honestly this is incredibly realistic lol
    I say this as a quirky, free-spirited creative type full of whimsy, who also has severe bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder, and every time I’ve been inpatient, there’ve been a fair number of MPDGs. If we’re there for mania though, we make the ward a hell of a lot more fun lol. I literally threw glitter at a nurse one time

    I briefly went out with a girl who tried SO hard to exhibit these traits in her real life. Years later, she and her husband/band mate killed themselves and their five year old after she received a cancer diagnosis. These MPDG tropes are as dangerous in their own way as fat shaming. They create an unrealistic idea of what life can be like if only you believed in magic, or fairies, or karma, or "the moment" or whatever. Real life is real life.

    I think the funniest part is that people think that the point of this video (and other criticisms of the MPDG) is to make fun of a real person; the point of the trope is that these girls would never actually exist in real life, that they're a cliché that doesn't exist (often written by men), and that the guys chasing this 'dream girl' are misguided.
    It has absolutely nothing to do with these non-existent women, just the guys searching for a muse who will "inspire" them.
    but y'know, whatever.

Someday, _no one_ will have to suffer like they do.

    That's because there are many different and competing variations of feminism. One group might seek out "feminine" art and culture to counter the dominant "masculine" one, while another might point out that dividing things into masculine and feminine actually reinforces gender stereotypes. As Judith Butler points out, every group that aims to defend the rights of women must first define what "women" are and, inevitably, someone is going to be left out (lesbians, for example).

    There is no such thing as a "real life" manic pixie dream girl. MPDG's are flat characters created by authors for one specific purpose. If you happen to like mix tapes, polka dot headbands, please check and make sure you're not in a romance novel or ABC family show, then embrace your quirks. :D

    The problem with the manic pixie dream girl in the case of entertainment is obvious. The thing that scares me though, are the people who think its okay to be that in real life. Nothing wrong with being free spirited and happy. But when you're pushing 30 and still don't have a job and repeat repeat repeat whatever your world has been since the age of 16, that's fucked. That's REALLY fucked.
