  • This is an interesting track. I don't know anything about Red Alert 1 or 2 as RTS games aren't really things I play, but it's interesting to hear how we invoke a sense of military might and fear and concern with instruments. In this case..Heavy Metal, which is pretty cool.

The Soviet campaign in RA2 immediately begins with a Soviet raid on the damn Pentagon lol. It doesn't get _quite_ as wacky as the third game, but it just holds nothing back and I love it. It's a cool contrast too, 'cause like, NOD is all about guerilla tactics and subterfuge to deal with GDI's superior might, whereas the Soviets are already a world superpower and they are not afraid to just slam themselves into the enemy head on.
Also yes, the entire franchise has absolutely stellar music.

The RA2 intro movie incorporates the elements of this track really well:
    - It opens with the ominous silhouettes of enemy airships and naval forces on approach.
    - "Westwood Studios proudly presents"
    - Air-raid siren blares as the camera pans up towards a cloudy sky filled with Soviet paratroopers and aircraft.
    - Missiles take to the skies as ground forces stage amphibious landings.
    - The track ends as a double-barreled Apocalypse tank swings it's gun towards the camera and fires.

Red Alert has a lot of banger soundtracks, glad that they're getting featured here!
HM2, RA3's Hell March 3, RA3's Soviet March (I think you'd provide awesome analysis on this as there's a singer), Grinder (RA2 main menu music), and Destroy (where there's a French lady speaking some words) are my personal favorites from the series.
There's also an entire concert collab by Frank Klepacki (the music guy of C&C) and the Tiberian Sons (a band that made covers of the Command and Conquer music) on TH-cam. @@stclaws yeah, HM1 is something great to listen to, but it's a matter of taste as all Hell March tracks set the tone for their respective games really well. RA1 is quite gritty with its setting and tone. RA2 is more modern, and it reflected on the track. RA3 is more futuristic, hence, HM3 being more bombastic.
I prefer the five tracks I listed as personal favorites over them, but that doesn't mean I can't appreciate the other tracks like In Deep for example.

Whoah. Didn't expect to see this in the channel. Absolutely stoked and hyped to see this, but never would have guessed in a million years it would be tackled.
Hell March 2 was and is still my most favorite track in Red Alert 2: I had it looped while playing with friends, and it's still one of my go-to-tracks when I need to feel pumped up. But I admit that part of it's soft spot for me was because I also really liked the original Hell March back on the first Red Alert. I wouldn't spoil that song in the off, OFF chance you might tackle it (here's to hoping), but I do like comparing and contrasting both songs and being stuck on deciding which I like better.
I'll have to say looking at it back, I did like Hell March 2 better as it feels like an evolution of the song, as well as it just ends in the proper note. I also feel that it's timed well, and the beat really feels like putting you yourself in almost marching mood.
On another note, when you mentioned putting things that are not musical instruments in a song, the first thing that immediately came to mind (other than this) was Pokémon Sword and Shield's Vs Eternatus fight Phase 3. It just really encapsulates the story and puts an epic spin to the situation. Sword and Shield is actually pretty good at using non-musical elements in their songs to great effect, come to think of it. The infamous Galarian Gym Theme is almost unseparable from the crowd chants and cheers at this point, no matter what the version is.

@@Skourillo I like them both, though I much prefer RA2's more macro style and it really fit well with my casual matchups with my brother. Our matches usually start off with him being more battle ready than me as I just keep focus on expansion and decorating my territory and when he attacks it's either he crushes my forces easily or my territory is too big and my armies that were for decoration hold him off enough to have all the decoration bases pump a lot of units to counteract him in which scenario he'll start doing guerilla tactics, like with chrono legionnaires, mirage tanks, etc. It always felt like a cold war when we would first start because whoever attacks first disgruntles the other because we'd give each other time to raise our armies though as I've mentioned I'd be more on decorating my bases at first. Red Alert 3 because of its small maps and micro focused gameplay, made our casual matches a bit less casual because we'd have to fight sooner because of our close proximity and less space for expansion and stacking armies doesn't bode well for older PCs...

is still amazing how C&C saga, westwood itself, changed so strongly the game industry, even the movie industry, but nobody give the credit and try to ignore C&C saga from the existence, the soundtrack, design, interface, game architecture, style, gameplay, system, everything. today most games uses features from command & conquer, but they still try to hide it and deceive us that C&C not exist...
remind that warcraft would NEVER existed if WW not had build dune and C&C, also starcraft is another nerfed son, same aply to age of empires, age of mythology, any RTS (of the current LRTS games, games locked/limited with less build because they was unable to copy the C&C pathfinder and main system that able us to explode the game unlimitedly) the grandchildren as dota is still descendent from dune and cnc... both "most famous" games in the world are grandchildren from C&C, that is league of legends and world of warcraft... they would never be borned if WW never had build RTS, but not only this, even other games as genshin impact uses things from command & conquer, we can find some noises and sound effects that was build by WW for C&C, not only this, but minor games from ww as their olds rpgs beside they are least famous and had less impact in gaming inudstry, still build something that everyone uses today, for several periods they were the biggest sound bank contributors, way ahead rareware or microsoft, i do not know today, but it was the top for good years. is amazing how basically all the good things in games today are features from C&C/Dune, WW in general.
the soundtrack gave impact and changed the mind of some other developers, electrorock and electrometal became more frequent, better speaking, they started to be used in games, ahead of the second place midway. but still today red alert soundtrack still kick a*s of all other games, tiberium wars too, the soundtrack was even in series law and crime style, many games with war or tense atmosphere today started to use the TW style, the classic C&C soundtrack too, is still used as base for some new composers to learn how to create a good song that is harmonious and captivating. what steam did in awards was terrible, they gave the credit to helltaker that the soundtrack was awful small and not that good vs many others, they ignored C&C remake, even with so many songs that was 90% better than the best song of helltaker, what steam did was a offense, aggression, shame, neglect, disrespect and dishonor for the musical and gaming history. pure shame, and the biggest of all times.
and the design, after 2, terminator was based in C&C, well... every futurist movies and games today are based in C&C style, theme and mainly plot script. old days we faced so many cliches that made everything so predictable, but after C&C the scripts became less predictable and we found more stories with cliche break.
we would be nothing today if WW never gave birth to this real legend.

Hi Marco!! I highly HIGHLY suggest you listen to the soundtrack from (or even play) Little Nightmares. Love your content!

Ah yes, Hell March 2, the iconic song for Red Alert 2. The game that literally has the Soviet Union literally walk straight up to America, punching them CLEAN in the face, sending America stumbling back into a brick wall all bloodied, broken and bruised, splayed on the ground. At least initially. Course' the Allies made the Soviets pay for such a move, but not without America taking one hell of a beating. All I can say is owch time xD

Great analysis, Marco! Been subscribed since your Genshin Boss theme videos and seeing the Red Alert series has been a wonderful surprise as I also love RTS Games! Speaking of military games with fantastic OSTs, I'd also love for you to also analyze the most iconic theme from the Metal Slug series: "Final Attack"!
If you have time for other soundtracks in the series, I'd recommend "Kiss in the Dark" and "Midnight Wandering" for more heavy metal influences, "Back to China" for Asian influences, and "Living on the Deck" for some smooth jazz!

  • @lucthelazysquid20

This has nothing to do with heavy metal, quite the opposite, but, you should take a look at the OST from a game called Dustforce, I believe you will be quite amazed with what you hear. The composer is Lifeformed, who more recently has done the soundtrack for the game Tunic, together with Janice Kwan.
Also, great work with the videos, I got introduced to you with your video about Someone is Always Moving on the Surface from ACfA, like this one, great video, love your content.

There's actually interesting stuff if you search up the "line said in hell march 2". If you browse around apparently it can be interpreted ambiguously by listener as military orders of several languages. However there's an actual thread on the steam discussions forum for this that talks about the actual line spoke and its source.
Apparently it's not Die waffen leicht an, as it is not a command found in any German Drill manuals, and Kelpacki has admitted to not knowing where the line was sourced from in later interviews. But he mentions particular sampling a particular instruction video for the marching noise then mixing the command shouted from that video in.
Turns out the line being shouted is Reform Line, Quick march. An shortened version of Reform Line, Remainder, Quick March. Which does exist in canadian manuals and was the nationality of the video in question.
That thread points to DrillMilitary 1019_13_2.mp3 and DrillMilitary 1019_13_3.mp3 on stockmusic as the source clips.

Hellmarch 2, and later on Hellmarch 3, were based on the Red Alert: Retaliation remix of the original Hellmarch. It doesn't get as heavy as Hellmarch 2, but you can hear the barebones of it in the remix.
Fun fact: The original Hellmarch was originally written for Command and Conquer: Tiberian Dawn. It was a Nod track, but they realized it didn't quite fit, so it was shelved until they were working on Red Alert (which was originally just another expansion like Covert Operations and Sole Survivor, until it became a full game). Frank and the higher ups at Westwood realized this was the perfect Soviet theme.

As Russian myself, I like how western artists/directors/musicians depic us much more evil, greedy, simplex and inevitable than we really are. I would say Russian hate war in its every aspect - WW2 left so many wounds that the victory day we still call as ''the tear-mixed rejoicing day" - but in the same time we are greatly proud of our victories in the past and believe that we ''can repeat'' (a modern Russian propaganda quote). I don`t like the aggressive part of this quote, but agreed with its meaning.
So, I just want to say, that when one depicts us as cruel and powerful swarm of conscripts, missiles and red-starred tanks, ruled by a cunning dictator, we say: ''these guys are not like us. But they look and act cool, so, why not?..''

5:37 Starts what I refer to as the "Command and Conquer" motif. I'm not sure if it's a thing. Or if it's in the earlier soundtracks, but I recall noticing it in a few places. One of which is in Tiberian Sun's song "Approach" at 3:37.

Command and Conquer: Red Alert makes the Soviet Union the main antagonist of the world. the Hellmarch theme in each game is much like Killzone's focus on their antagonists; the Hellghast - It is a challenge. Are you prepared to fight the Red Army? Or will the world revolution sweep you aside as it did so many others?
An effective call to action for players I think :)

currently in the process of wanting to learn to play a few various instruments (might even have one of the rooms of my houses dedicated to being a music room for it) and i've already got plans for songs i want to make with the various inspirations for them being the hell march variations, the doom 2016 and eternal soundtracks, MGR, and if i end up delving really hard into EDM or something there might be some inspiration from the old Madness Combat series lol
which someone NEEDS to convince marco to check out, that series and its games have carried me through my childhood into my adulthood, having seen all the original animations and played the first mainline game (project nexus) alongside the few side games and eventually even bought and beat the remake of Project Nexus
my god the music of that series
i have a deep love for music lol, ESPECIALLY video game music which is why some of my favorite games end up being ones with good soundtracks or atleast good combat music
its why i want to write and play the music for a game project i've been wanting to get on for ages (procrastinating on it lol, and trying to learn blender hurts my brain cuz of ADHD) i dream for the day it comes out and gets looked at as ATLEAST a bad AAA game lol
just means its a good enough indie to looks like a bad AAA
best i got going for me is years of gaming and knowing gameplay should be a hard focus alongside fun and engaging combat, i mean i was literally gonna add a "greatsword" in anticipation for asmon to play it and say its the only reason why he kept playing lol
like i don't care how much hate it'll get, i just want to make it so i can play it myself XD

I'd say half the fun of Westwood games really came from Klepacki. Not just the semi modern games after RA2 (before EA completely took over and straight up killed the franchise), but already all the way back to Dune2 wouldnt be so iconic without Klepackis OST.
